The SUNFLOWER CAFFE in Sonoma was recommended to us by a usually spot on fellow food connoisseur. We walked in and it looked like a pretty cute bakery/sandwich shop/coffee shop. I checked out the menu and went with their highly touted Chicken Salad Sandwich on a Baguette. We sat down outside under a heat lamp, and enjoyed people watching on Sonoma's busiest of streets. A few moments later, our lunches arrived. I thought it was an OK sandwich, but I definitely wasn't blown away by it. My wife, who had the identical meal but on sliced brioche, oohed and awed over it. My husband and I came to Sonoma for a day of relaxation. We rented a scooter and drove around. Someone mentioned Sunflower caffe for brunch so we decided to try it out. We didn't know where we were going but we went in one door only to walk back to the other door to stand in line to order. So, left door is where you have to wait and order the food before you sit down. (Or where you see a lot of people standing in line) We waited in line for over 20mins or so... YES, it was a long line! Finally we almost get to order only to find out, they ran out of eggs for brunch so they will be serving from lunch menu but can still serve other breakfast menu as long as it's no eggs. Bummer! After we waited for 20 plus minutes, we ordered and paid. They gave us a number then went to the back patio and grab a seat. They also have inside seating and outside in the front but we wanted a nice and relaxing atmosphere. There was a high review on Yelp for the Smoked Duck Breast Sandwich. I thought it was going to be one of those meaty duck breast like chicken breast but it came out like deli meat! Again, Yelpers did not disappoint me! It was delightful ... even the salad was yummy! I love the note they put on the menu (No variations, don't ask) - I wouldn't change it. It was delicious! My husband got the Rueben (Corn beef) - It was pretty good too. It also came out like deli meat and has a slight citric taste to it which goes well together! We also ordered Waffle sandwich - Vanilla ice cream and nutella - OMG... this is one of the best dessert ever! The waffle was nice and crispy with the lovely nutella and ice cream. Great way to end a meal! I also ordered Monster Mimosa - It was just ok for me. I drink mimosa all the time and when they say Monster... It's only a big class that's half filled. Tried the smoke duck sandwich. Took an hour to long to prepare for a mediocre dish. Unfortunately, we weren't the only customers waiting a long time that day. Waiters and waitresses were apologizing to every customer for the long wait. I wonder what happened to have cause such a delay. In any case, they could have told us while we were ordering how long the wait would be. Don't let your first impression of the front and ordering area fool you though. There is a lovely back patio with a fountain in the middle to enjoy your br-unch. They also have water stations inside past the counter and outside in the patio for you to self serve. Hint: if you just want to order a drink and the line is long. Try to see if you can skip the line and go to the side window to the right of the register. read more

I'm troubled tipping anything when you A: not getting any table service, B: no experience with the service or food. Coffee was excellent and free refills. Mom ordered a Belgian waffle. I included 15%. I ordered an egg sandwich. Waffle was a plain waffle with a dab of butter with no accouterments or decor. It was good, just lack any presentation. The egg sandwich was good. I enjoyed the brioche bread. The aioli gave it a greasy texture & taste. I struggled containing the egg and avocado from it. With the exception of the cashier, the staff was warm and cordial. My sister and I spent a blissful 24 hours in one of my favorite close-by escapes - Sonoma, California. It takes me half the time to drive to Sonoma that it does to get to downtown San Francisco. We arrived in Sonoma mid-afternoon on a Monday. Our first-of-many surprises at Sunrise Cafe was that they were not only open but the menu had four words that stimulated my inner Homer Simpson: breakfast served all day. Often the delightful surprise fades to black when the cold bacon and gut-bomb pancakes arrive. Not so at Sunrise Café. The bacon waffle tasted like somebody had beaten the egg whites just for me. My sister ordered the tuna salad. I thought she was getting a tuna salad sandwich. What arrived was five thin slices of seared tuna on top of a bed o gorgeous greens. This was another pleasant surprise. We came back the next morning for breakfast when I had the California egg sandwich with bacon and avocado. This was so delicious that I dreamed about ii that night. Another surprise for a place serving food of this caliber was that you order and pay at the counter. Seating options are in a backyard garden, inside at a table, inside at a bar table, or in front on the sidewalk. If you have a dog, you'll be on the sidewalk. Casual yet yummy food. We had great cappuchinos! The waffles might be the best I've ever tasted, not too sweet, flavorful, thick, crispy and light. The fresh fruit was FRESH and juicy, good variety. We sat in the patio out back with a great vibe, nice plantings and warm sunshine. Good food, but not worth the wait! So let's start at the beginning. We walked up and waited in line for 20 minutes to order. Like other cafe's in the area you order up front and then sit down. SUCH A WASTE OF TIME and is SO INEFFICIENT! If you're hungry skip it as you still have to wait for your food! When we finally ordered we moved out back to the patio. EXCELLENT seating and ambience. Big fan of the atmosphere out back! I ordered the sausage and potatoes. It came out in about 5 minutes which was nice, however my husbands dish didn't come out for another 15 minutes! The dish was somewhat weird. I wanted to try something new, but it just tasted, well....weird. The other thing to watch out for is it this came on a butcher block and was very liquidy. The tables have a lot of holes in them and the liquid will fall through on to your clothes! My husband ordered the spicy chicken sliders. He had to sit there and watch other tables get their food before us (even though we got there before them) as well as watch me eat mine. Totally stupid way of serving food to guests! When they finally arrived it was a pretty small amount of food for the price. They were good though. The only thing he didn't like about them was that there was a lot of potato bun so he had to take the top off to enjoy the meal. If you're not in a rush and want to try some unique food, definitely worth the wait. However if you're a family or people in a rush I would suggest someplace quicker and cheaper. read more

I finally decided to stop and try the food here. Always thought is was just a coffee destination. But at lunch time the place is packed with- get this people eating lunch. My goat cheese sandwich was good but for $11?? Salad was also good but I think the place is over priced for what they offer. I think they are lucky to have the location they have and are taking full advantage of it. Nothing wrong with that- just hope they know that there is always competition right around the corner. I am a local sonoma resident and I am very disapointed in the portions the Sun flower offers. The omelet is more than 1/2 the size it use to be. I ordered the spinach omelet and got 4 potatoes (I counted), 1 DRY piece of toast and a sad little omelet. Mind you I am 5'4" 107 pounds so... not a huge eater. . .I left hungry. .. When I asked the counter person for extra potatoes he shrugged charged me extra and the when the omelet arrived there was 4 potaotoes I asked is this an extra portion "I guess..." he said. Went to this place twice in the same weekend in June, it was that good. Only critique was that the blackberry mimosa was too sweet. They should add more champagne to help balance the blackberry and get more bang for your buck. Otherwise, between the 2 visits, our group had the duck sandwich, burrito, avocado toast, grilled cheese, and American breakfast, and we were stoked about our meals. Soooo good. Upon recommendation, I tried the lamb sandwich and was REALLY impressed. Lamb isn't an item I typically would suggest, but it's a must at the Sunflower Caffe. What a cute cafe! There is a front door seating area, indoor, and then you walk into a backyard patio area that just seems magical. :) I was so surprised they had seating... I think it's purposely hidden. It's has flowers and trees with a fountain that makes the place so peaceful. I had my Thai ice tea there on a sunny day - seemed perfect. I went for eggs benedict Sunday AM. I ordered it and a small OJ. The food was delivered quickly and was room temperature. I returned it to the cashier and was told it would be replaced. The second dish arrived and one of the yolks was the consistency of an overcooked hard boiled egg. The food was hot only in some spots. The waitress told me she would bring a third plate. I told her no and picked at some of the food on the plate. She brought the check, $27 dollars for the eggs and a small OJ. Nothing more, no coffee, no comp, no apology. On a very warm Saturday afternoon, I enjoyed a delightful duck breast sandwich with gruyere cheese. My sister was disappointed that the Eggplant Veggie Vegetarian sandwich was not available (sold out), so she tried the Avocado and Goat Cheese instead. I had the pecan waffles with a side of bacon and was not disappointed. However, the rest of the menu didn't even appeal enough to make want to visit again. We both thought the order at the counter & get a number system was really efficient, esp since it allowed you to pick any seat in the house. We chose to sit outside in the back courtyard which was like a beatiful secret garden covered in fresh sunflowers.\ For the food: - We ordered a pot of tea and I loved that you could pick your own tea bags and the fact that they carried Harney & Sons tea - Indulgent Parfait- best parfat I've ever had...we've been trying to recreate it at home ever since we got back from California - Croissant- huge and delicious; comes with homemamde jam - Goat cheese omelet- solid I would definitely recommend coming here and then strolling around the area to take in the sights and day dream about that parfait. read more

It also took forever to get and I say that with considerable patients for a busy Saturday morning. There was a very long period before I got my food and my husband got his. YUMMMM. I love brunching so of course I had to stop by Sunflower Caffe when I was in the area! We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and I must say wait was prettty long. Since it was so busy it was pretty difficult finding a spot to sit. I usually go with breakfast sandwiches when I go to brunch, but after reading so much about the fresh berries waffle, I went with the fresh berries waffle and a side of house potatoes and I didn't regret it! They gave thick cuts of potatoes and they were so crispy and had such a nice sweetness...it was so good. I recommend it to anyone. I also got the monster mimosa and it was absolutely delicious! OK breakfast. OK Coffee. Very pleasant patio. I had the herbed goat cheese, tomato and spinach omelet served on a lovely ceramic plate that had sunflowers on the border ($11.00). It was a flat, folded omelet. The spinach was fresh, the tomato, OK and Laura Chenel goat cheese is Laura Chenel goat cheese. It was fine. The smallish portion of cubed potatoes looked like they had a little paprika. They were fine. The bread is from Basque Boulangerie located on the other side of the Plaza. Unfortunately, I'm not that much of a fan of that bakery but most people are. To paraphrase an old joke, I thought the bread was only OK, and there wasn't enough of it. There is only one slice of toast with breakfast. There are quite a few restaurants that will charge $11 for a breakfast dish, but they will give the standard two slices of toast. The Ecco coffee is one of those that I want to like more since it is local and organic, but repeating the joke ... it was only OK and there were no refills. I was happy to hear that Sunflower is now using Clover butter a local dairy with a great reputation. On my visit it was Darigold butter. . The produce is from Greenleaf a local high end provider of produce, However, something went wrong with the orange garnish on my plate as it had an off fermented taste. If I do go back it would be for lunch or to sit on the patio with a glass of wine which is reasonably priced and served in nice glasses or a pot of Harney & Sons tea. My choice would be some of the items that are favorably reported on yelp - the pecan waffle, pork loin sandwich and the duck sandwich. The website mentions on the second Tuesday of each month there is a special dinner The Café Guerbois Dinner Club I could see giving that a try on a warm summer evening. All in all, Sunflower tries to use quality ingredients and of the 25 or so restaurants on or within walking distance from the plaza it is in the top 3 most affordable menus read more

Price range is about the same as most major cities (about $15-20/pp), but quality is good. Acre coffee from Petaluma was delicious. The front area got a little smokey, better ventilation would be a plus. All and all, a great food experience. Management Tip: Conduct business conversations (employee interviews) in an area away from customers. Perhaps the corner in the garden out back. Bad food and bad service! The woman who worked the counter when we ordered was rude and snobby. Did not greet us, just stood there and waited until we ordered. I ordered the spinach omelette with goat cheese that came with potatoes and a salad. The spinach was not cooked it was just shoved in a cooked scrambled egg with too much goat cheese. The potatoes were completely cold, it was like a spoonful of greasy potato salad. The salad was fine. The latte I ordered was the only saving grace of the whole meal. What an amazing start to a perfect weekend in wine country. It was a beautiful fall weekend and we were ready for a hearty brunch before we started a day of wine tasting. We stumbled upon the Sunflower Caffe and decided to give it a try. When we first walked in we were surprised that there were so few tables with customers, that is, until we discovered the back patio. The mixed-colored patio furniture and the flowers and greenery, gave a peaceful and serene vibe. The only downside was waiting in line to order. Once we ordered however, the food came out within 10 minutes. We started with the delicious blackberry-mimosas!! They were fresh and delicious and got us in a wine drinking mood! My sister who is gluten and dairy free, had a delicious California egg sandwich with the most AMAZING gluten-free bread. Our omelets came with side salads and delicious potatoes.
