Not sure why this place has so many negative reviews...I love it here! This used to be my bagel spot of choice when I was attending MSU. It gets quite busy during the morning rush, as to be expected, but I've never had to wait an abnormal amount of time for my order. Plenty of places to sit, however I just take my food to go. I always usually get a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel and it leaves me well stuffed for hours. Bacon is always nice and crispy and great cheese to egg ratio. There's many different bagels to choose from, but I love their rainbow bagels! Not many places make rainbow bagels, and they just make my breakfast more fun (I'm just a child at heart). And the pretty colors on the bagel have never ruined the quality of it. Haven't been here in awhile though, so I'm not sure if rainbow bagels are still a thing there. Anyway, if I'm ever in Montclair and need a quick breakfast on the go, I'm stopping here! read more

Without a doubt the best bagel place in the area. Routinely get their everything or pumpernickel bagels. Sometimes I'll add scallion cream cheese, or fried egg and Taylor ham, or egg salad. And almost always add the home fries. Sometimes they may mishear your order, but they always make it right and add an extra bagel for your troubles. I had been meaning to try this place for a long time. Good selection of bagels made on site. In addition to my plain bagel with cream cheese, I ordered a chocolate muffin, which ended up being a little dry, but I'm not about to ding a bagel place for serving me a dry muffin. Overall, a bagel with cream cheese, a egg, ham and cheese bagel, the muffin, 2 OJs and a water came to just under $15. Not bad. They say there's a $15 minimum for credit cards but we found out that's not true. My only gripe with this place is the way it's set up. After everyone orders, there's no place else to go but to together in a tight corner between the cash register, the bathroom, and the fridge. You almost have to dance around with one another until your order is called and it's time to pay. read more

Staff was rude and awful to my family when we went in for coffee and a snack for the kids. I asked where the coffee was located and the woman behind the counter literally waived her hand in my face and said "over there." Then, when I said they only have water, another person brought out a canister that read "do not consume" and said, "the coffee is in here." All I asked after was, "are you sure it's okay to drink this, it says "do not consume?" The guy waved his arm and snapped "yea it's fine." I'm not sure if it was who I was that offended them or that I asked a question or maybe I didn't order enough to make my visit valuable, but I do not think Any customer or person should be treated like that. I was running errands the other morning and wanted a bagel for breakfast. I know the place gets busy so I called the order in so I would not have to wait very long. I asked if I could order one bagel for pick-up. The person that answered the phone said "you only want one bagel?". When I said yes, he said "oh my God". I am sorry that I am a person that can only eat one bagel. I also did not realize it was uncommon for someone to just order one bagel. Incredibly poor customer service! I used to go to this bagel store all the time and never had any issues with my order. Unfortunately, my most recent trip left me very disappointed. I ordered Taylor ham, egg, & cheese on toasted everything bagel with SPK. It wasn't crowded when I went and I only had the one item in my order, yet it was still wrong. There was no SPK and instead of my bagel being toasted, it seemed like they smothered it in butter. Sloppy breakfast sandwich construction and getting the order wrong in general - definitely wish I could get my $5+ back. read more

When we got there we were directed to a menu that had the close time as 4:30. We ordered 2 orders of waffles and 2 sandwiches. We were told the waffles would take 10 minutes and the person taking my order seemed annoyed. He then walked away and someone else was there who I asked if I could pay for the items and 4 drinks. The bill was $46 with no receipt. Not sure if he understood my question about it but we then began the wait. 20 minutes later with customers walking in and out we were told the restaurant was closing in 5 minutes. My husband asked if we could eat there. They were put out and said fine. After all where were we taking these 2 kids with syrup. We were asked if we wanted syrup fir the waffles that came 20 minutes later. About 40 minutes after we ordered we were handed a to go bag. When I asked why didn't you tell me you were closing when we ordered he mumbled we have families too. Not sure what that means you are a deli on Monday afternoon. I was not trying to keep anyone from their family just trying to eat the food we could not get yet paid for. Also the same men with families were being inappropriate with a group of young high school girls wearing shorts. Other customers were annoyed as well. We were told we had 30 minutes to eat. They made us feel so uncomfortable we left much sooner and sat on a bench in the sitting area across the street. Where we got to see them lock the door and upset the regulars fir not being open during their normal hours. After seeing how this deli values customers we will not be going back read more

Don't waste your time or money. Over $9 for this is absurd, and honestly unnaceptable. Barely 2 slices of thin turkey, and what was practically crumbs of bacon on top. I waited for over 30 minutes for my order (an egg sandwich, a buttered bagel and a plain bagel). After 20 minutes, I politely inquired about the status of my order. The woman at the register was very busy and told me to wait "one second." Another 10 minutes went by and the order never came out. OK - If the bagels were not as fresh & delicious as what they are... this would be a much more bitter review. Why? Because their assembly line system, quite frankly, BLOWS. I have never seen more disgruntled people, cramped into one 4x4 space, who have literally yelled and screamed at the poor girl working the counter -- holy smokes! The customers who frequent Sunrise have this false sense of entitlement that is truly unbelievable. At any rate - I suggest getting here a little early before the rush. Because there is a rush, roughly starting at 10 AM on the weekends and going until 1 PM. And when I say line out the door.... yeah, no B.S. ... The food is worth it, however. There is absolutely any kind of breakfast concoction you can imagine - and they do most of it pretty well. Bagels are warm, chewy and a little crunchy on the outside, malty and soft on the inside, these are some of the best around...(I do prefer hot bagels down the street, sorry but I am not gonna lie...) Their breakfast wraps are what is up. They are beast. And delicious. Blueberry muffins are yummy. But man they have got to improve that waiting area. It just bottle-necks, you start at the back, order your food, it gets narrow and thin as you approach the counter, then it opens up into this little space where you can barely move and you are literally ass-to-ass with a total stranger as you are trying to get an ice tea. They have been doing a number system lately... it probably is working out well. Hopefully the douche-bag customers will chill the eff out a little.... it's only a freaking bagel. read more

Sunrise is great because they actually make their own bagels in the traditional manner, boiled then baked. This gives them a deliciously crispy outside and a soft and chewy inside. They sell so many that you can generally get a warm one fresh from the oven. Besides bagels they have a selection of baked goods and a full menu of sandwiches. If you're a boar's head cold cuts fan, Sunrise is for you. There are a couple of tables in the front of the store by the windows and the walls have pictures from Philly on them. Overall the food is great, as are the people; my only complaint is the parking lot is a pain. read more

Everyone please read your receipts! They charge for everything.. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese toasted and a bacon egg and cheese toasted. While the cook was making the sandwiches the cashier asked what I got so she could ring me up. I told her a plain bagel with cream cheese and a bacon egg and cheese on a poppy seed bagel. In Spanish (like I didn't understand) the cook says "it's toasted." Then the cashier adds an additional .14 cents for each bagel!!! I couldn't believe it! The cook removes my bagels from the toaster and they were only toasted on one side... I told him since I had to pay for it separate the bagels and put them back in the toaster. I paid $.28 for toasted bagels they better be toast! The workers just laughed and rolled their eyes.. not worth the trip or the money! read more

Visiting NJ from Boston, I always have to make sure I grab a bagel when I'm in the state. Especially a bagel with Taylor ham, egg, and cream cheese, which is my preferred preparation. These bagels are gigantic. I'm talking twice the volume of a normal bagel. Even compared to the other bagels I've gotten down here in the State of the Bagel. They had Salt bagels, which are my favorite, so instant points there. My Taylor ham, egg & cheese was pretty tasty although the egg could have been seasoned a little better. Cream cheese was fine. My wife got french toast with a side of sausage patties. The french toast was okay, but certainly nothing special. I wasn't surprised when I learned they only had Kraft "Pancake Syrup," which, of course, doesn't even make an attempt to pretend to be anything close to "Maple." Prices seemed okay, and though some other reviews mentioned a credit minimum, we had no problem with just a $13 charge on my card. read more

I go here all the time. The staff are friendly and organized and keep everything flowing. It also helps that they renovated and moved somethings around to make more space for patrons waiting for to go orders. I get breakfast croissant sandwiches all the time. Their Bagels are excellent and fresh. I've had a grilled chicken salad from them and it was huge and very good. The only time I was let down from them was oneday I ordered a burger combo and it wasn't to the level of the bar I set in my head of everything I've had from them. Sometimes certain things are not the best at great spots you go...so I still go there but I just won't order that again. read more

I can't figure out why this business is so crowded at ANY time? The workers are disconnected, disingenuous and aloof. Every time I go there they either get my order incorrect or charge me incorrectly. After pointing out the mistake, again as it's my fault. Knowing my order I am VERY specific knowing they can just hear lox, instead of lox spread. But somehow they seem to always get it incorrect either on the sandwich or at the register. The bagels are good, but not on the level of Hot Bagels Abroad over in Bloomfield. The prepared foods, salads, etc are pretty good as well. Service is friendly, but a bit disorganized and too slow for a bagel shop. They need to do a better job of cleaning up the tables during heavy dining hours. It just kind of feels dirty at times. Their coffee is just so-so. It's as if they'd prefer you to head over to Starbucks, or better yet recently opened Java Love. You could do better. You could do worse. It's a decent option if you live locally and want someplace to walk, or if you're looking for a change of pace to realize just how much better you prefer your current place. I live within walking distance so would get an occasional bagel sandwich, but stopped going because no one wore gloves to make your food and it grossed me out. I've seen them literally wiping down the counter with a rag and then take an order and prepare your food. When i noticed about a year ago that they started to wear gloves- at least some of them were- I started to once again cave in and go there for a bagel. Today was the last. I will only order plain bagels and a side of cream cheese to minimize hands touching my food. But when the man had one gloved hand but chose to use the other ungloved one to retrieve my bagels, I asked for new ones. The stupidity makes it even worse. Sunrise has been a local hit up for me since I started working in Montclair. Recently, the workers have been getting nastier. They roll their eyes, talk about the customers with them right there. Besides the rough workers, the food has gone downhill. For a $5.25 bacon, egg, and cheese, the single tiny egg and two slices of bacon were pitiful. One of the workers there is extremely rude. Last time we were there, we called in an order ahead and after watching this guy call every order but ours- we had spoken up asking where we should pick up called in orders. He rudely told us to calm down and laughed in our faces. Fast forward to us giving this place another chance. We called in an order, gave ample time. Waited and when I told the gentlemen my name and said I called in an order, i was given the wrong order. Accidents happen.. we called to explain and again this guy arrogantly laughs over the phone denying any responsibility or apologizing. Honestly, I can't figure out why anyone goes to this place. The bagels are very "unbagel-like", Watchung Plaza is always a circus, thus making a quick drive-by nearly impossible, it's relatively expensive and -- most importantly -- there's a high likelihood that the $h!t$how behind the counter will screw up your order. But this menagerie serves a purpose: as long as it's in-business, the knucleheads that patronize this place will not clog the entrance to the best bagel joint around. 'Nuff said! read more
