It was our first time trying Sunrise Bagels. We usually go to Hot Bagels on Valley but they closed due to covid-19. When we first walked in we loved the look of the place. Very clean and great decor. We placed our order with one of the men behind the counter. Then a lady called us down to the register to pay. My husband told her what we got. She charged us $10. Then when our order was called she said oh you didn't tell me you got cream cheese on the bagels in the nastiest tone. Almost like we were trying to pull something over on them. She then said well now I need to charge you another $6 for cream cheese!! Now, I'm a little heated from the awful customer service, we get home and realize they didn't even give us the bagels we asked for! This place needs a new staff bc the bagel shop itself is nice. The bagels definitely aren't anywhere near the bagels on Valley but they'll do in time like now when things are limited. I personally won't return though due to my experience. read more

Sunrise Bagels is the place I go to when I'm home for the weekend. I always get the Taylor Ham, egg and cheese sandwiches. Their bagels are dense, almost NYC style, which I love, but they need to layer on some more cream cheese. Service is quick and the people working there are lovely! read more

I really don't understand why people hate on Sunrise. I have been going frequently for the past 15 years and I have never been disappointed. The bagels are good, the service is quick, everything is reasonably priced and unlike every other bagel shop in Montclair there is ample seating. I usually get an egg and cheese on a plain bagel. This place has the best bacon/taylor ham, egg, and cheese bagels! They also have really good toasted cream-cheese bagels and fresh squeezed orange juice which is to die for! My only complaint is that a woman behind the counter gave me a threatening stare when I tried to tell her my order. Ok, it has been awhile since I have dined at Sunrise Bagels, but I will say this. The staff is very disconnected. I placed my order where it says "place order here", then I go to the counter next to it to pay. There were two people in front of me and when it was my turn I had to repeat my order. I forgot to tell about the hot chocolate and coffee and the girl I originally placed reminded me I ordered hot chocolate and coffee. The order I placed with her should've went to the cashier instead of me repeating the order for a second time. I pick up my order and go sit down. Looking over the order I placed I see that the bacon is missing. I go back to the counter and inform them the bacon is missing. Mind you, I paid for it. The guy who was cooking questioned the girl who took my order twice as if I was lying and trying to get free food! Very offended!!!! For me, PREJUDICE!!! I asked the cashier to print out my receipt so I have proof of what I paid for. Smh! I won't be back! I'll that my hard earned money elsewhere! Second part of my review. I was standing in line to pick up food to go for my husband and I saw the worker take an order and then with his bare hand bag someone's bagel order! He put his uncleaned hand in the bagel basket! I'm on my way there! They make their own, and the bagels are truly worth the line of commuters that backs up every morning. Located right next to the Watchung train station in Montclair, this is the place to grab a snack as you head into the city. As dorky as it sounds, I always get the canned cappucino out of the machine but it really is good. The only downside was that they used to be weird about debit purchases under $10, but they seem to have gotten over it the last time I was in there. The staff is super-nice and know their customers--they often repeat my usual order back to me before I even get up to the counter! I love this place. read more

Great egg and cheese, and the kids love the newish rainbow bagels. I do try to only go when it's less busy, but overall it's quick service. I have to drive a little to get my bagel, but it's worth it. This place is great. Atmosphere is happy and quaint. Service is moving and satisfactory. Servers are competent. I've been coming here for two years now... they are very consistant. The bagels are very good. They have a great lunch too. (great menu choices) I had a friend visit from TX and one of the first things I did was take them here. My friend ordered something they didn't have readily available, but they went out of their way to freshly prepare his second choice. (and they didn't even know it was for anyone other than me ;o) The young girl who usually does the cashiering is on the ball! The girl knows her stuff and is very efficient. They are like a well oiled machine back there. ;o) The coffee is fresh. They have several sweeteners available too, like pure organic cane sugar. I take my coffee black, but they have several creamers and milks available. "All self serve".;o) Napkins, place-ware, and ketchup are always available for you to grab extra if you want. During warm weather I really enjoy taking my viddles right outside, across the way on the green, to sit on a bench. The atmosphere is awesome inside and out. And because the service and food are good everyone is in a good mood even though it gets crowded in line. For those of you who buy 1-dozen bagel orders, they have a bagel program. After a certain 1-dozen bagel orders you get a dozen free! Just ask them for a card. I definitely recommend this place. read more

My usual bagel place closed so I am on the hunt. I went on a Sunday morning and the store was bustling but the line moved. There is a great selection of items and I found myself staring at the egg casserole. However, I would not return here for bagels. I got a sesame bagel and was highly disappointed to find the inside was fluffy and reminded me of rolls that I could get at the store or local bakery. I've given this place several tries, but I have to admit, it's definitely not my favorite bagel place in Montclair. There are several reasons for this - one, the bagels are surprisingly sub-par. A bagel is supposed to be crunchy on the outside, and warm/chewy on the inside. Their bagels have a little bit of that crunch, but for the most part, they taste bready - almost like the kind of bagels you get at a grocery store. Two, their coffee tastes like something I could grab at Quickchek for 50 cents cheaper, which is a surprising disappointment. Three, parking is atrocious, especially on the weekends - there have been times I literally give up and go find somewhere else for breakfast because I can't stand going around that loop for twenty minutes. In short, this place isn't terrible - it's not like I'd tell people to stay away, nor do I think their food is awful. I agree with a couple of other reviewers here. Main points, short and sweet: Bagels are just OK and more doughy than real bagels. As I say "Goy Bagels". Organization and management are horrible. Even when they are not busy and there may only be 3 or 4 customers it takes forever even to get a simple bagel with butter or cream cheese. You actually have to ask if you want the bagel toasted or they give it to you cold. I avoid this unless I happen to be in the area. This place gets pretty busy during prime times (Noon on Saturday), so maybe call your order in. For montclair bagels, It's between this place and Hot Bagels Abroad. Both great, but it's a matter of opinion. Try em both and make your decision. In the mood for breakfast? Try the Bacon/egg/cheese or Taylor Ham/egg/cheese. If you're not from NJ, DEFINITELY try the taylor ham. It's a Jersey thing and it's delicious. In the mood for lunch? This is perfectly fine breakfast/lunch venue. It's has a friendly neighborhood vibe (I love a block away) and the staff was friendly, service quick. They recently upgraded all of the tables to be a handsome, marble-looking finish and with the free wifi and comfortable chairs, this is an excellent place to work. I don't care for TV but they have a 60" color one high in the corner (good for watching Olympics these days). I had a toasted egg bagel and cream cheese with an iced coffee. Bagel was the right mix of crisp and chewy; the coffee isn't Pete's Coffee worthy but fine. There are a few reviews here that are absurdly negative (there's no way this place is a 1 or 2 star) so don't be thrown by the low average stars. read more

This morning I ordered a bagel lightly toasted cinnamon raisin cream cheese I received a burnt bagel with a mix of cinnamon raisin cream cheese and another cream cheese that contained scallions. I returned a bagel and ask for the same bagel to be remade AND I received a new bagel with the same cream cheese containing cinnamon raisin cream cheese and some scallions. I used to go Sunrise Bagels all the time. They had quick service and were very friendly. Now they are extremely rude and never get a phone order correct. The last three times I called resulted in wrong orders. When you get inside to pick up food you will be rushed to order and the same happens for pickup. I've eaten here twice. First time was a normal bacon egg and cheese and the second time I ordered whitefish salad on a bagel. The bagels are big, fluffy, and doughy, 5 stars on the bagels. Just FYI, apparently they have good days and off days. Today was an off day. I ordered an egg and cheese with avocado on a spinach wrap, which I saw the server write down. What I received when I opened it at my desk was egg and spinach, no avocado or cheese, on a plain wrap. I had also ordered a smoothie, which no one made until I had paid, received the rest of my order, and the cashier thought to ask me if I had ordered anything else.
