Good food, friendly service, the staff are amazing. The California Benedict is my go to

Thanks to the COVID-19 virus, and the orders of the state, I haven't been able to able to enjoy any restaurant dining for over a month, as the state only has been allowing take-out, delivery or curbside pickup, and those methods aren't in my dining "book." Thank goodness last Thursday, the state lifted on-site-dining restrictions for restaurants in the greater Sacramento area! At last, I was able to enjoy dining again! Sunrise Cafe, located outside of Auburn had been on my "bucket list" for a couple months, so today, this fine diner received the honor of being my first restaurant to visit in the year 2021. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greater at the cashier's station, which does "meet and greet" duty as well, and you'll be greeted by a friendly staff member who will greet you with a smile. I was greeted by friendly Mari, who was also my server. The main dining room is quite large, and separated from the bar by a wall. Dining room furniture is widely spaced, during these virus times. It's clean, comfortable and features a "country" decor, in keeping with the rural location of the restaurant. The back end of the restaurant includes a small bar, which includes two stools, but effectively can only seat a couple of diners, if they're together, thanks to state guidelines. It's mostly a coffee bar, but under the current ownership, the restaurant serves beer and mimosas. From the "Breakfast Specials" section of the menu, I ordered "Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs," which happens to be one of my favorite breakfast entrees. The menu describes this fine breakfast as "Served with home style potatoes, hash browns or fresh fruit, with toast or biscuit." It's a simple description for an elegant breakfast! The "main attraction" was the chicken fried steak. The flattened piece of steak was on the large side - probably about 6 ounces - and it arrived batter and fried to a beautiful golden brown. The meat-to-batter ratio was spot-on, as the batter enhanced and complimented the steak, but didn't overpower the taste of the perfectly cooked meat. The batter was crispy, the meat was tender, and the meat/batter combination made for a simply amazing chicken fried steak. But... a chicken fried steak isn't complete without gravy, and the gravy that I enjoyed with my breakfast was as good as gravy gets. The gravy was creamy, flavorful and topped with lots of small cube of cut-up sausage, diced green onion, and a sprinkle or two of seasoned salt. Sunrise Cafe didn't skimp on the gravy, as a generous portion of it topped my steak. Like the steak, the gravy was amazing! The side of hash brown potatoes were partially topped by the steak, which made for a nice presentation. The hash browns were perfectly tender on the inside, and cooked crispy golden brown on the outside, the way hash brown potatoes should be fried. The mark of a chef with talent is when you order your eggs fried over easy, and they arrive as ordered. The chef at Sunrise Cafe has talent, as my eggs arrived perfectly as ordered, fried over easy. The side of sourdough toast was perfectly toasted, sliced and coated with lots of real butter. Simply delicious! The slice of orange and parsley added a nice garnish to this fine breakfast. Dear readers, Sunrise Cafe serves a delicious breakfast! With the breakfast of "Chicken Fried Steal and Two Eggs, when you add everything together, you have a breakfast to enjoy! My long-awaited visit to Sunrise Cafe was truly worth the wait, as the food was absolutely delicious, the price was right, the atmosphere was quaint, and the service was super fast and friendly. As the motto of the restaurant states, "Rise and shine, breakfast is ready," and that's a true statement at Sunrise Cafe, located in Auburn, CA. read more

They are very friendly and I think they have really good breakfast burritos. I would totally recommend them as a local breakfast spot.

This has been our main go-to local spot for weekend brunch. The food choices are great and covers all of the standard basics with a few extra bells and whistles thrown in. They have some nice "south of the border" selections as well as several vegetarian alternatives. Lots of fresh ingredients and nothing that has been reheated in a microwave. The lunch menu is also pretty extensive with many hot sandwiches and several salads. The service is excellent and most of the staff are part of the extended family of the owners. Some of the kids who were toddlers when we first started going here are now young adults and staffing the ranks. Their pride shows whenever we've been there for meals. I'm glad they are now going back to serving dinner a few nights a week after COVID put a temporary halt to that. The ambiance is nothing fancy but it's dependably clean and the outdoor al fresco option during good weather is always a major plus. read more

Our first time imbibing here and I must say, clean and friendly staff and fast service made our visit aces. From A to Z, wonderful! Food was delicious and prices were right. I can't wait to come back and try other dishes. I had 2 eggs, 2 sausage patties, really yummy coffee, sourdough toast, with butter, hash browns and my breakfast was very filling and tasty. The food was great. We knew it was going to be a great brunch when we saw just how many people were dining at this restaurant. After fishing the whole morning, my father and two boys were really hungry. They devoured their meals, and my father enjoyed his meal as well. We're not in Auburn often, but from Loomis, this is just a short distance from Dad's favorite fishing spot. We'll be back again. In speaking of the service, the young gentleman was friendly and very responsive. My reason for a 4 of 5 stars is two fold, one I would like the coffee to be a bit stronger, and two there is always room for improvement. Serendipitously Rosa and I stopped in to Sunrise Cafe for lunch. What a delight. Spicy Jalapeno Hamburger with cheese and side of perfect French fries. Brilliant decision! Terrible service. Explicitly told them to avoid pork, bacon and ordered other dishes. But for served chicken fried steak with bacon in gravy, and ham on the eggs Benedict. Staff has a hard time following simple instructions. I will never dine in this restaurant again. read more

Food is always great but why do so many places under staff on holidays like father's or mother's day? We have been sitting as no food has come out for at least 20 minutes. We placed our order 55 minutes ago. Nothing. Very disappointing and if we come back it will be takeout only. People are asking for an update and daughter is snapping at people. We go here semi-regularly for both breakfast, lunches, and dinners. We really like this restaurant, it's family owned, and they care about the food in the service. I would hardly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice breakfast or a quality lunch. Nice little local spot , basically right up my back door so I can't go wrong. My favorite is the breakfast burritos but they do have really good waffles and pancakes. The place is quaint and there's some outdoor seating on beautiful days. It's a little overpriced but when you live in the country you don't have very many choices so definitely check it out the food is on point! read more

This Cafe is wonderful. Very quaint and inviting. The ambiance is welcoming with Otis Redding singing in the background. There is outdoor seating as well. I placed an order online prior to opening and my husband and I decided to instead go somewhere that was open. I called as soon as they opened and communicated that I wanted to cancel my order. The woman who answered said she would tell the kitchen not to make it and let the manger know that I didn't pick up the order to see if she can get me a credit. A few days later I still had the charge in my account. I sent an email with my order number and issue informing I did not get my credit and received zero response. So either I paid for a meal they didn't even make or they made the meal anyway and ate in my dime. Not pleased with the service. read more

This place is amazing! Staff was super friendly. Party of 2 around 11:30AM on Sunday- no wait. Cute and little but still feels roomy. They don't have alcohol but a cute bar to sit at which would've been great for us since it was just us two. Next time we got checked in on a lot by the staff. The food was beyond good.
