I grew up with a local family run breakfast place that holds a special place in my memory banks. I have been looking for a similar kind of mom and pop shop and feel like I have found one. This is my favorite breakfast place in the city. I've moved a few miles away and probably won't make the trek unless I'm in the neighborhood (I just don't feel like doing a whole lot of moving in the morning). The staff is friendly, the food is good, and the atmosphere comfortable. I love their back patio. Really though, the five stars are for one thing: the Smokey Mountain Eggs--biscuits and gravy topped with eggs and bacon. Whoa. Hangover cure heaven. And their hash browns can only be described as "dank." I'm a bit of a diner hash brown addict, and these greasy well-browned hash browns really do it for me. And they have Intelligentsia coffee. It is always busy when I am there, and I eat breakfast late (say, 1pm). We tried to give this place a chance but I wasn't impressed. We sat down to breakfast & upon taking out orders (egg that come with 2 slices of toast) I asked if it were possible to get a 1 wheat & 1 white. She shook her head & said, "We don't allow substitutions" I said I'd just pay for the upgrade to get a slice of wheat bread with the white bread. She said again, "No substitutions of any kind!" It just seemed odd, I was offering to PAY for the bread- which is ridiculous since my meal came with 2 slices of toast...and I asked for 1 white & 1 wheat. I'm not sure why it's an issue but apparently, there's no substitutions of ANY kind at all. IF I'm offering to PAY for it, what's the big issue? EDIT **I'm not sure how or why the owner is acting this way as a response to my review but- I didn't LIE about anything nor do I have an agenda. My family & I were there this past weekend & this DID HAPPEN. Maybe they need to be more in tune with what their waitresses are TELLING people. She REFUSED my substitution flat out saying they didn't allow it & if she claims she did, she's a liar. It appears to be upsetting to the owner, but as much as it may pain the owner to hear. I'm not lying, sorry. Instead of calling every negative review a lie, they need to be a little more professional & listen to the problems instead of ignoring them. My boyfriend and I ordered smoked turkey sandwiches to go only to open the container, and be outraged that they charged us 7.50 for a piece of cheap wheat bread with a few pieces of turkey between it with a side of mayo, two limp pieces of lettuce, and one slice of tomato. It looked like something you would hastily put together for a 4 year old. If I had the time I would have taken the food back and demanded a refund. How this place has 4 stars is beyond me. Last April we made the decision to install a tracking device on my grandmothers ankle. She just kept wandering off. I just went to Sunrise after living nearby for a year. I have been missing out. Its pretty cheap, very tasty, and a small, cute place for breakfast. They have really good fresh squeezed orange juice, and toast that comes buttered and toasted well-the way it should be. I had the special, egg, cheddar, and sweet pepper scramble and it was great. They even have a choice between regular, turkey, or soy sausage. This is a place that I'll definitely be bringing my parents to when they come to town. The dive diner atmosphere is a bit more homey than most and the specials are usually always where I find my selection. Very cozy atmosphere and there usually is room in the outdoor patio. Somehow, I always manage to make it in here minutes before hoards of people become congested at the small entrance. The Smokey Mountain Eggs are my go-to backup plan if no specials catch my eye, but lately I've been going with the Gourmet Breakfast Sandwhich. It's a thick slice of lean ham, smoked slice of gouda, scrambled eggs, all between a buttery croisant. That, plus a side of hashbrowns, and you won't be disappointed. It's a shame that my Kosher friends can't enjoy this sandwich, or anything that I order for breakfast. Once my face is regular enough there, I'm sure that I'll be greeted with a pitcher of iced tea. I came here for breakfast on a Sunday. It was full, but not crowded and there was no wait. Our waitress was so friendly and spunky. I really liked her and her service was great. I had the biscuits and gravy with eggs and bacon. Such goodness. It was rich and salty, just the way I like it. Definitely only ate half of it and ate it again for breakfast the next day with some greens so there was something healthy to make me feel better. The biscuits were fluffy and you can taste the sausage in the gravy. I do not like sausage gravy where it is all white with pepper and just tastes like salty cream. Their gravy was good. I asked for over medium eggs and they were cooked perfectly. Exactly the way I like them. They were quick to refill my coffee, and I drink a lot of it. I would come back here. Reasonable prices, friendly service, it's almost never a problem to get a table, and there's sufficient greasy deliciousness to destroy even the most fiendish hangover. The food is exactly what you would expect it to be, so I'm not going to offer lavish descriptions of each course. Nor am I going to act all surprised and offended that diner food is - well, diner food. It's good, you'll like it, and it's a relaxed place to spend a Sunday - or especially weekday - morning. I suppose I could quibble that the white gravy is evidently not even remotely house made. But then I'd have to quibble about the fact that y'all Midwesterners think it's acceptable to put sausage in white gravy. Then I'd have to quibble that said gravy is served on something (delicious and surely deadly) called "Smoky Mountain Eggs" - a slice of Tennessee and North Carolina that could only be found at Damen and Chicago. We stopped in here this morning after leaving my gf's new apartment in search of breakfast. So glad we actually decided to go in here! A typical breakfast restaurant with a lot of Mexican options (huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, breakfast tacos etc). I had the breakfast tacos, which were pretty good (served with beans and rice) and my gf had the chilaquiles, which were AMAZING. Extremely fast service. As in, we ordered our food, and received it within 2-3 minutes. No joke. The place was packed, so they serve people quickly and get them out just as fast, but not in the sense that we were being rushed or anything. Friendly servers with good recommendations. This place totally reminds me of a spot out in the middle of no-where (where I'm from) that was decorated with a lot of the same "country kitchen" garb, waitresses that you can't even tell are a waitresses and the overwhelming smell of frying butter wafting throught he air. Great place in the neighborhood to grab brunch. My husband and I walk here and the food did not disappoint. My husband had a breakfast sandwich with their soy sausage and a side of hash browns that he really enjoyed. I had some of his hash browns and almost wish I had ordered a side of my own they were so perfect and crispy! I had their French toast special- cinnamon swirl with 2 sunny side up eggs and a side of the most delicious sausage ever. They refill your coffee without you having to ask and service was quick. This is what a greasy spoon is all about. Regular, delicious food from a diner with all your hipster necessities. They've got soy sausage for the vegetarians, and Intelligencia coffee for the bean snobs -- don't peg Pubert as a complainer, we've been known to get the soy meat and we love the coffee. The waitresses are always fine and there's a beefy busboy, so you've already got a killer staff to take care of you. The decor exudes greasy spoon but they give it a twist with holiday-specific decorations and lights. The place is lined with booths and a communal line of tables sits in the center of the room. They pack the people in and always seem busy when we go, which is usually weekend brunch. Oh, and in the summertime there's a great little unexpected patio and that, my friends, is fine. The food is consistent and good; we usually get an egg sando or chilaquiles, but they've got pretty good huevos rancheros, eggs florentine, and always have a clutch special. Another specific highlight is the hash browns; they do hash browns shredded and fried, rather than home fries, which is very necessary for a cheap-o diner. We don't want the home fries, baby, just the shreds. So Sunrise is the place to be in the morning, but we've got to admit here the one downfall of the place -- if you're sitting up front, you will be subjected to the constant line of cars pulling into the McDonald's across the street. Sunrise can't control this little foible, obviously, but take that into consideration. One time we saw some dude's wheel fall off his car while pulling into Ronald's. All he wanted was a hot apple pie, but his dang wheel came off. Subsequently, the customers that came after him had to roll over the sidewalk to get their Quarter Pounder or whatever. Can't stop them from getting the fix. Sunrise can't help it. Good cheap food. Chances are you'll sit elbow-to-elbow with a cop; safe choice for your brunch fix unless you did something wrong last night. read more

A little awkward when the place is full, you are basically standing over the end table and watching them eat while you wait, but its a small physical space which also makes it more intimate. Do NOT order from this place!! What a hassle!! I was trying to order from Sunrise Cafe that's in my area. The linc took me to this restaurant and I called. The VERY rude lady said you have to place the order online. So I followed the props. I ordered and paid . I realized this was the wrong location and I called her back . She again was VERY rude and said I was NOT getting a refund.. and that the orders are taken by an outside company. I called wix .. they called back. They said it was up to the restaurant to call THEM to say if the refund would be given as they were ONLY the people that helped create the website!! So I called the rude lady back.. and she said.. I notified the owners.. nothing else I can do.. too bad.. have a great day!! I will NEVER order from this place!! What HORRIBLE customer service and to have such an ignorant person answering their phone!!! Do now I'm out $26.70 and no food... Went for brunch with friends - first thing to know: CASH ONLY. Okay, now that we've covered that.... Pretty good for being a diner, actually. I got the veggie omelette, which didn't change my life - but then again, I knew I was going a boring route :) It would have been great with some avocado in it, just a thought. What was super exciting is they let me change out my hash browns for tater tots. Yum-O. My one friend got the black bean burger and loved it. I had food envy - recommend it! Sunrise is my go to spot for breakfast. They serve breakfast and lunch daily from 7am to 3pm. They offer your typical breakfast plates - eggs, pancakes, waffles just to name a few and lunch items such as sandwiches, salads, and burgers. A bonus for you Intelligentsia fans, they exclusively serve Intelligentsia coffee. It looks like your typical diner but is a true hidden gem with their top notch service and delicious home made meals. They recently have adopted the cash only policy so be sure to hit the ATM before you come. In case you forget, they have an ATM in house. Best breakfast item is the Smokey Mountain Eggs - biscuits with sausage gravy topped with 2 eggs any way you want it (my preference: over easy) with 2 slices of bacon on top. The Smokey Mountain Eggs by far put themselves in their own category and has all the other breakfast places beat. Sunrise cafe is a great little breakfast place. I go there a few times a month and have never been disappointed in either their food or service. It's typical breakfast fair - so if you need some sort of $14 pancakes with a mimosa, it's not gonna be for your highness. There omelettes are yum, and the country fried steak and eggs is killer. You can read all the reviews .. but here is all you need to know .. Cops love this place, and are in there all the time. If you don't know - cops only go to places with good food. I came in for an iced tea and got talked into trying their chilaquiles... O. M. G. They were AWESOME. You would never expected such flavor from this little place with a name like Sunrise Cafe; I typically would have gone after some eggs and has browns or something like that. But the Chilaquiles are the best I've ever had. Great mix of flavors and textures with the homemade tomatillo sauce as the rockstar. It was both creamy with surprising crunchy bits of tortilla slathered with egg and cheese and delicious sauce. The beans and rice sides were great compliments as well. I don't live anywhere near Ukrainian Village, but I will venture out there just to this meal again. Oh, and the service was friendly with enough sass to keep you smiling. Highly recommend. read more
