Alice!!! 2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 pancakes and hash browns coming Right up! That's right, quickest breakfast in my entire life! Our party also had fresh squeezed OJ! Belgium waffles with real strawberries and whip cream optional. My hubby had steak and eggs w/hashbrowns. Steak was nice and charred, cooked perfect. The hashbrowns are the basic shredded potato, the crisp I love without being burnt. This diner is like being at grandma's down home food that inexpensive, fast and great friendly service. I give Sunrise 4 stars because Hallelujah there is a diner in my neighborhood!!! What does Chicago have against eating BLTs and seasoned fries at 8am? Sunrise is quaint and has a pretty simple menu. For breakfast I recommend anything with a Mexican flair. Their chorizo is yummy and salsa is fresh. Lunch you can't go wrong with seasoned fries next to any of their sandwiches. read more

Generally speaking, this is your standard diner: small, friendly people, relatively inexpensive, strong coffee. Then why the five stars? Two reasons: 1. I always order my eggs scrambled with cheddar. Here? It's on the menu. Their cheddar scramble with peppers (red and orange) is outstanding with eggs that are still tender. Thumbs up. 2. Their hash browns are second to none. No cubed potatoes with an excess of onions here - it's shredded potatoes perfectly done with plenty of crispy edges. I cleaned my plate. We went early on a Saturday morning - I can only assume that this place is an absolute zoo on a Sunday - and are already plotting our next trip back. Best breakfast in the city! Everyone here is so sweet and friendly - even the customers. I had the Smokey Mountain Eggs which is two eggs and a gravy biscuit. Coming from North Carolina, I've been searching for years for a decent gravy biscuit in the city and this is hands down THE BEST!! I'm a bit biased because my friend works here, and my boyfriend and I went mostly for that reason. However, I LOVED the chilaquiles! The tortillas are soft, but still a little crisp and the salsa verde was incredible! The intelligentsia coffee was sublime and I definitely drank more than I should have because it was just so damn good! My boyfriend had the Sunrise Special which is all your breakfast basics. He didn't stop to breathe, so I'm assuming everything was good. We split some biscuits and gravy which were also delish, though made me want to run a few miles after scarfing them down. This is definitely not a place to go if you're looking for a fancy atmosphere or pancakes in the shape of the Eiffel Tower or anything, but it is damn good food for pretty reasonable prices. read more

3.5 stars. I had warned my out of town friend that Chicagoans take their brunch seriously and the lines can be notoriously long. Despite the intention to get up earlier, we strolled in a little after 10:30 on a Sunday morning. I expected a wait which was not good as my stomach was growling. I was please find that they had immediate availability in the back covered patio. The temperature in the back area fluctuated a bit (dress in layers), but the additional seating was a nice option. Service was pretty good. Our waitress was friendly and quick. They always made sure that our water was full and offered my friend more coffee. The OJ was tasty although my friend did not care for her coffee. The food was your standard breakfast fare although they offered a wide range of options. It is nice that they offered lunch options at all times to satisfy less brunch-loving palates. We both ordered the sunrise special which had bacon or sausage, two pancakes, two eggs and hash browns. The portions are large. The hash browns weren't cooked as requested (crispy) and weren't as hot as they should be. However, the bacon was deliciously crispy and the eggs cooked to order. The pancakes were pretty fluffy and probably my favorite part. It isn't exactly mind blowing brunch, but they do the basics well. Overall, it is a solid brunch spot and I would certainly come back. Terrible customer service. The woman working there was disrespectful and short with me. Even cut me off while I was speaking. She obviously did not care about keeping customers or gaining new customers. Every person is a human with human emotions and she spoke to me as if I was nothing. Seriously delicious and friendly. I've been making scrambled egg sandwiches for myself for decades, and have never, ever seen it on a menu before. The egg sandwich from Sunrise is far superior to ones I make for myself -- and that right there is my standard for places where I pay for food: if I can make it better myself, then why bother? Theirs was delicious. Plus, it comes with about eight pounds (not literally) of hash browns on the side. Just average breakfast food. Laid back interior and environment. Not the absolute best bang for your buck, but hard to complain.

Service is outstanding as the waitresses have always been very friendly and the kitchen gets the food out quickly. The food is very traditional, although they offer some Mexican style breakfast entrees and make their own tomatillo sauce. I would recommend the huevos rancheros read more

My other friends seemed happy with their selections: french toast, some kind of egg thing and the twoegg+sausage+hashbrowns+pancakes combo. I revisited this place after I read Aurore's review again. As for decor, this place is a plain and subdued diner with well-worn booths along the sides and small tables lining the middle of the cozy space. Despite its modest looks, this place delivers a solid square no-nonsense 2 by 2 by 2 like no other place in this part of town. Even with a bit of gourmet flourish. For one of the 2's, you can even get nice thick chewy pieces of applewood bacon. And for your coffee, diner coffee has been upgraded to a $2.50 cup of Intelligentsia. This might even be a better price than at the Intelligentsia coffeebar (but if so, why is that the case?!) I recall there's a nice intimate outdoor area in the back. read more

Thursday night of my Chicago trip was kind of a rough one. Not because there was a lot of drinking (but to clarify, I'm not saying there wasn't a lot of drinking), but because it POURED. Nobody was out because of the massive rainstorm, so for my group of five friends it was basically: 1. run to bar to see if it had beer and people (preferably female) 2. walk in to bar, see beer but no people 3. Drink beer 4. Leave bar 5. Repeat Friday morning, we needed food, stat. And off to some place called Sunrise we walked. And walked. And walked. I was obviously expecting a shorter trip, but trusted my friends that it was worth our excursion. And it was. If you serve rice and beans with any breakfast dish, I am going to be happy. Here, just about everything came with rice and beans. And the bread options in most instances were either flour or corn tortillas, not what kind of toast. AND each table had hot sauce plus bottles of green salsa. I was a very happy man. I went with the breakfast tacos: eggs, smoked sausage, onions and peppers in tortillas served with rice and beans. I would have liked a little more sausage in mine (insert not sure it's still funny "that's what she said" here), but overall it was really good. And so we did what a group of five guys does when they go out for breakfast: we shut our mouths and devoured our food. When the check came, we quickly divided up the total, paid our bill and were on our way. This is a great breakfast spot. Eating all the eggs and rice and beans on a regular basis for breakfast may not be great for your dating life, but it was great for me on a rainy Friday morning after a drinking downpour of a Thursday night. read more

I have to say I like this little place very much. It's friendly, the service is very good and the food is terrific. We arrived on a Saturday morning for brunch, and I was afraid we would either be waiting for an hour, or not get in at all. But we got seated within minutes, and I don't believe that was a fluke because without pushing people out the door after they've eaten, Sunrise Cafe seems to be very good at keeping the turnover quick. The biscuits and gravy were really terrific. The biscuits were tender and flakey and the gravy had just the right amount of pepper in it. My dining companions said the eggs were excellent, and the hash browns were very good. The portions here aren't huge, but that's actually a good thing. We didn't leave feeling as if we couldn't go on to do what we needed to do the rest of the day. Big plus. Another big plus? Intelligentsia coffee. Sunrise is the perfect unpretentious breakfast/brunch/lunch place to hit up if you're in the neighborhood. Love their bottomless (Intelligensia!) coffee and Greek omelette. Good food + good prices = happy Natalie. Gets pretty crowded on the weekends, but that's the norm, so just get up a little early or wait until the brunch rush is over. read more

We sat outside on the patio, it is now enclosed which is nice for the winter but during the summer it is a hotbox back there. They need to add more fans or something else before I will sit out back again during the summer. The food it always solid here and they have an extensive list of lunch options during brunch for those of us who are big breakfast fans. The only complaint is that the price of adding avacado is $1.50 which is a bit steep on price at a place that it is 25%-20% of the cost of most meals. read more

Had the friendliest waitress, good coffee, a decent diner burger, and classic rock music - all the makings of a 5 star diner. My gf got the breakfast burrito - she enjoyed it. Whenever I go to a "breakfast" place I always order their corned beef hash plate...I don't know why but often times I've found its a great barometer for how the rest of their food it. This place came recommended by my friend who is from around the neighborhood...it was pretty quiet the Saturday morning we came in for brunch...but pretty soon it was apparent how popular this place was...about 5 minutes after we have a seat...at least another half dozen folks came in and helped to fill out the rest of the tables. The hash was yummy...not too salty and had just the right amount of potato mixed in. The OJ was fresh too boot. Sunrise is a great little diner. The decor leans toward janky, but this place is definitely not skanky. They do nice chilequiles, a good chorizo skillet and are pretty attentive to your coffee cup. The prices are not too bad, and you should be sure to ask for extra green sauce. read more

This place totally reminds me of a spot out in the middle of no-where (where I'm from) that was decorated with a lot of the same "country kitchen" garb, waitresses that you can't even tell are a waitresses and the overwhelming smell of frying butter wafting throught he air. Shockingly, I was not hungover when I went this fine Sunday morning (also, might add, up before noon!) and can give a real-time, un-half alseep view of the breakfast here. I'd give it five stars if they reduced their prices. It's not break-the-bank expensive, mind you, but I know exactly what potatoes and eggs cost. Even when being generous with overhead, their margins are still a little too fluffy. Still, it does technically fall within the yelp Likert Scale for 1 x $. But, there's more to price than simple cost: Atmosphere: small friendly diner inhabited by friendly people Food: tasty. simple. traditional. well done. Coffee: woo-hoo! usually, i fully expect my coffee to *suck* at small friendly diners. but here! the coffee is delicious. I've been there 3 times and their consistency factor goes a long way. Service: always smiling. one lady has the most robust diction when she's giving the bread choices. see if you can figure out who i'm talkin' about. *heavy sigh* Most people who know me, know that I love grits *flashback to the yumminess that is "Wishbone's grits."* I was sooo happy to see that Sunrise Cafe served grits. #FAIL. :( I really don't know HOW you go wrong w/ grits. But, Sunrise has it allll wrong. The grits were thick and SUPER gritty looking. (I wouldn't know)...but they looked like what I would imagine prison grits to look/taste like. To top it off, they were $4.50 for a side order. Whaaa? The outdoor patio is nice though. Nice and shaded. The waitresses are nice and friendly. And they serve breakfast "late" (until 3pm.) At least the hashbrowns were good, I guess. I just really need for them to fix that grit situation. read more

This place has an amazing menu in sort of a dungeon setting. It is great for a rendezvous meeting. When looking at the menu, they have this great drink called bottomless barnacle. This restaurant is indubitably the best place I have ever eaten. 10/10. read more
