Warm homey atmosphere and phenomenal service! We had the combo (soba soup + sushi), stir fried soba noodles, and deep fried squid. Everything were prepared carefully, had nice presentation, and of course great taste! I'm glad I listened to redditors to check out these small holes in the wall restaurants instead of us dining around the main road in Waikiki. The sushi was similar in quality to those in high end restaurants, but at a much lower price. Definitely get the soba noodles, either in soup form or stir fried, both are great! Also, the server even picked up the phone after closing time when we called frantically trying to locate a missing item. She stayed on the phone and helped look around the restaurant. Sunrise Restaurant is THE place for absolutely delicious and authentic Okinawan cuisine. One bite of their Pork Bittermelon took me back to my childhood, when my Okinawan mother would make this very dish for me. Outstanding! Their Okinawan Soba? To die for. I only wish I had known this little restaurant existed when I was in Waikiki seven years ago! The restaurant is currently only doing takeout at the moment due to COVID-19, but the pickup process was a breeze (we pulled up, they came out to verify our order and take payment and food was brought out very quickly). Locals spot. Most of the peoples that came in were old Japanese men, who look like they are in here every night. Lot of native language being shared. Okinawa soba and Okinawa tempura were on POINT. Easy to miss, quaint restaurant with minimal parking. Most importantly, it's BYOB!!! (which is the main reason why we chose to eat here lol). Whole experience would more adequately be summed up by 3.5 stars, but rounding it up to 4 because it's local :) Just in case, date made a reservation for 5:30pm, which was a REALLY smart move because the restaurant was almost completely packed when we got there. However, all the other customers were part of one huge party, so felt like we were kinda intruding on them. But we were in our own little corner in front of the bar, so it wasn't too bad. Food: Date ordered the shoyu pork with a side of soba, and I went with the oxtail soup and sushi. The sushi was first dish to arrive. Wasn't the best sushi we've ever had, but we appreciated the variety. The shoyu pork was very tasty albeit rather fatty, and the soba broth was amazing (didn't taste the noodles but date said was ok). The oxtail soup took FOREVER. Good thing we brought some alcohol!! When it finally came, the aroma was just so overwhelmingly delicious (mixing two different senses here, but aromas can be delicious!). The broth was tasty, but there weren't too many oxtails and not too much meat on those few oxtails. The little meat that was there, however, was fall-off-the bone tender. Would we return? Maybe. Service is a little slow and in terms of cleanliness, the restaurant probably gets 2-3 stars. BUT, the food tastes deliciously homemade, and the soups taste like they've been boiling the whole day (a rarity nowadays). read more

What a hidden gem. I love mom n pop shops like this. When you walk in, the place is packed with traditional, old japanese people. That's when you know you're eating legit food. What we ordered: Okinawan soba - Not your usual buckwheat noodles. They almost look and taste like a hybrid of ramen and udon noodles. Homemade, good texture. The soupy broth is light and tasty. Oxtail soup - Comes with two large pieces of oxtail. The meat is so soft that if falls right off the bone. Again, light and tasty broth. Not overly salty like most oxtail soups. Sushi - okinawan sushi is a little different than your usual japanese sushi. I think they put some kind of japanese mayo (kewpie??) in their sushi. It gives it a subtle sweetness. Parking is hard to come by. There are only 3 spots in front of the restaurant or street parking within the community. read more

I came here on a Friday night to try a new Japanese restaurant. I ordered the okinawa soba + sushi combo. My dad ordered the salmon special. My mom ordered the special miso + sushi special. The +sushi combo comes with 6 pieces of nigiri (egg, shrimp, salmon, & 3 sashimi with 4 pieces of califonria maki. The okinawa soba is basically udon noodles with 1 piece of fishcake and beef (with some of the red ginger thrown in to give the broth the ginger flavor). The special miso is basically your standard miso with extra vegetables thrown in, and in a bigger bowl. The salmon special is big piece (maybe 1/4 of a full size salmon), side salad, side miso soup (regular style) and a bowl of rice. We also tried the dynamite, thinking it was going to be a dynamite roll. It is actually a piece of salmon topped with mushrooms and oninon with a cheese/mayonnaise sauce over it. Not bad - one of those dishes that it's good to try once. All in all, the employees are nice and the place is relatively clean and the food is tasty. I love all things Okinawan, so obviously I love Sunrise, which is an Okinawan restaurant in Kapahulu. Passed by a million times before finally trying it last year. If you have been to Utage in Kalihi (the only other Okinawan restaurant I know of on Oahu), Sunrise is much smaller and has a more mom 'n pop feeling. The menu selection is also smaller, but I think it's because Utage also serves a lot of regular Japanese food. If you've never tried Okinawan food, here are some things to order at Sunrise: - Pigs feet soup - Oxtail soup - Okinawa soba: noodles in a pork broth - Nakami-jiru: soup will various pig parts in it - Shoyu pork ("rafute"): pork stewed in shoyu (as you can see Okinawans LOVE pig and thus cook it in every possible way!) - Goya champuru: bitter melon stir-fried with tofu, egg, and spam - Whatever other champuru (stir-fry) that's on special Their sushi is also pretty good! Tips: * Parking in the area sucks, but there are a few spaces in the driveway right in front of the restaurant. Come early enough to snag one! * BYOB! Grab a couple of Orion bottles from the Aloha Gas station on Herbert and Campbell, one block away, to optimize your Okinawan dining experience * If you are super hungry, order several dishes and eat family style. Can't believe I've never tried this place before. I must've passed it hundreds of times over the years. Located just off Kapahulu Ave, Sunrise Restaurant, is the epitome of "hole-in-the-wall." Just enough room for 4 cars to park in front (barely). The restaurant is also quite small. As soon as we walked in the door I felt welcomed. The menu is simple, homestyle, and straight-forward. We ordered stewed pork, bitter melon with pork, and the sushi spare rib soup combo. All of the dishes came pretty quickly. Portions were decent. The "dark horse" dish was the bitter melon with pork. It looked like thinly sliced bitter melon with strips of pork, chunks of tofu, an scrambled egg. I know it sounds strange but it was really tasty (and healthy). The spare rib soup and sushi were also delicious. We sat near a big party of locals. They seemed to be regulars and knew the menu and the waitstaff. They were a lively crowd and it was fun sitting next to them. Great place, warm atmosphere, delicious food at a fair price. Overall I'd say this is definitely a keeper! read more

The food are delicious and served with very friendly service. If you're lucky, they'll play the sanshin and sing during your meal. The place is a very simply and small joint to enjoy good food at. After all these years I finally went to this place. Every tells me how great the Ox Tail Soup is, so I had to try it for myself. And it was a really good soup. The meat was very flavorful and really tasty. The broth was nice and really tasted home cooked. The portions were a little small, but it was expected since the price is on the lower side. It came with a side of sushi. The sushi was fresh and your basic nigiri pieces such as maguro, hamachi, tako, sake, tamago, and california roll. But the real star of this place is the Pig's Feet Soup! This soup was the real winner! The broth was amazing. The meat just fell off the pig's feet and tasted so divine. I could have eaten 2-3 more bowls. That is how good it was! I am planning to go back soon so try the Spare Rib Soup and the Nakami Soup. read more

Parking is AWFUL !!! We were lucky to go before 530pm and have another patron park so that we could get in the last of 3 stalls in front. Sushi fish wasn't very fresh. Here in California I have found only one Okinawan restaurant. So whenever I visit I look forward to the many shops serving Okinawan dishes. Of these, I think Sunrise is the finest. In addition to good food, it has a welcoming atmosphere and a wonderful mix of Hawaiian and Okinawan Kitsch placed around the shop to delight the eye. Sushi turns out to be a very good match with Ryukyuan dishes. Another thing I liked is that their Gohya Champuru is made with fresh pork, whereas it often served with SPAM in both Okinawa and elsewhere. With apologies to all the SPAM lovers in Okinawa and Hawaii, I think that putting SPAM in good healthy Ryukyu dishes ( Nuchigusui ) turns them into junk food.
