I'm usually not crazy about Mexican, but I loved this. My server recommended the Birria Tacos, and they were chock full of crispy, tender, and delicious beef, with a smoldering dip on the side. Yum! Service was quick and polite. Ambience: it's a Mexican restaurant, so the music is very loud and the walls are covered in cultural doodads. Interestingly, most of the music and doodads was American? Used to come here a lot when I went to BU. it was definitely the spot to get good nachos after a game, concert, or class. For one of my friend's 21st birthdays, we came here and even stayed until last call. He was so happy! Over the years, it looks like Sunset has changed, both in physical space (I forgot how long ago, but they expanded a little bit to the right of the bar) and in menu. I remember coming here and laughing about how the nacho toppings were not evenly spaced out (the toppings would be dumped all over the chips and the bottom chips didn't have any toppings). Oddly enough, that was kind of the beauty of Sunset. The most recent time I went was after a BU hockey game this month. My friends and I were really excited to visit our alma mater and feel all the nostalgia. When we got there, it was decently crowded but we were seated right away. We ordered nachos which came out quickly, but they were much smaller than the serving we were used to. The nachos were alright (not bad but not fantastic). I was even excited to share a drink with my friend; however, their blender was broken and she was not able to order a frozen margarita. That was kind of a double bummer. I think I would give Sunset one last shot because of the nostalgia factor... but I'm worried that I might be disappointed again. read more

Rating 2 stars carried largely by service & ambiance. Service was lovely, very friendly. Margs were good & would be a fun place to grab drinks, watch a game, etc. but the food.... AWFUL! Chips were stale, salsa tasted like tomato sauce, rice tasted like it was from a microwave & canned beans. & so so so over priced for that poor of quality food! read more

The food was not memorable at all. I came here for a brunch event and they had stopped serving brunch items at a certain time which was odd and not on the flyer that there was a cut off time. Was given a different menu and half of the items weren't in stock so we had to go for a different food item which was gross. Drinks were very watered down. Ambiance was alright and the music was good. I would probably come back just for the ambiance alone but the food and service needs a lot of work. read more

I really want to love Sunset Cantina for everything that it is and love that it is so central around the BU campus when I'm visiting friends here. But I just can't get over how dry their protein (especially chicken) is every time I come here!! I find myself downing water every time I take a bite out of their chicken and it always gets caught in my throat!! For that reason, I would stray away from their chicken tacos and chicken add ons. But I love how big their full nachos are (legitimately bigger than two of my heads) - they are stacked like a mountain and I'm all for it. They also have great deals where depending on their rotating weekday special, is half price. I think their margaritas are great and super strong which is always a plus. I just don't think there's anything overly exciting about this place, aside from being in a great location for a Buncha thirst college kids. The only time I'd come here is if I'm craving something that's on their half off days (ie. half off burgers or nachos on their specific days). I think there's a lot of better Mexican food in boston proper so wouldn't come out of my way to dine in here unless it was a last resort. But I appreciate sunset cantina and am sure most of the BU students do as well! read more

New management really ruined what this place used to be; a great dive with copious yummy bar food (killer nachos, huge beer list). None of that anymore! Small plate, and it doesn't taste good. This place is trying to be a fancy upscale dive (I guess?) which obviously doesn't work. Nachos is 16 bucks for about 8 chips covered in cheese. Lol tf? Seriously? My wife and I dined while most of the college students were out of town on spring break. Food and service were amazing!

Having gone to BU for undergrad I was distraught over the loss of Sunset Grill and Patron's, and was entirely worried about Sunset Cantina closing. However, the restaurant is under new management and I have been twice since. I went a few weeks ago and with two friends. I got the pomegranate margarita and we split a half order of nachos. We should have ordered the full size as the half seemed too small for three people. The drinks were strong and delicious, and the service was attentive. I believe the margaritas were $10-$11 each. A little more expensive than I remember but I felt great after two of them. I also went back for their relaunch party a few days ago and it was phenomenal. You could really see the care and effort the new management team has put in. We had an array of appetizers that were delicious, but of course my favorite was the nachos. Split the XXL with a bunch of people and I was stuffed. Also got to sample their raspberry margarita which was amazing with a hint of mint. The spiked Arnold Palmer is also really boozy. The chciharrones (which I'm not sure are on he regular menu) were also addicting. Overall, Sunset has gotten tons of business from me and it will continue to. The vibe is fun, the drinks are strong, and the food is delicious. They also have pool tables and games in the back to really make it a night out. If you're an alumni visiting, definitely go back and try it out again. read more

**This review is during the COVID-19 guidelines for indoor dining. Came here for the first time with some friends for some nachos and drinks on a Thursday night. Food: 4/5 We ordered the Full nachos with steak, chicken enchiladas, and curly fries--we didn't expect such large portions! The nachos had a good assortment of toppings and the chips weren't too soggy, but there wasn't much flavor besides salt. The enchiladas were actually pretty good, but I would've liked more chicken. The curly fries were average, but also a bit salty for my taste. Overall, the food is pretty meh but addicting when ~not entirely sober~. Drinks: 3/5 I wanted something light and refreshing, so i ordered a skinny lime margarita ($9), and it was honestly underwhelming. The drink was very watered down (probably because it was a lighter version of their regular margarita) and the lime flavor tasted like cleaning spray. Next time, I think I'd order a cocktail or something. Atmosphere: 3.5/5 I'd have to come here on a Friday night or weekend to get the full experience, but coming here on a weeknight at 10PM was not it. The ambience wasn't lively at all. We came too close to closing time and felt rushed to finish our food. If I come here again I'll update my review. This being a college bar there are numerous alcohol options available but surprisingly there were many options unavailable when we arrived so be mindful of some backup options when selecting! Met up here with some friends and went straight to the nachos as they are definitely a sight to behold if it's your first time. Be warned that the portions are HUGE so I would advise for a half order if it's 2-3 people (we were 3 guys and just almost finished it!). I opted for the BBQ Texas ribs and wow are the ribs huge. They are quite rich in flavor so have some veggies nearby if you don't want your arteries to clog up as you tackle this thing! The place was fairly quiet on a Friday evening though to be fair it was right before Labor day weekend so students haven't quite moved in yet. Parking is a mess due to construction so be warned it may be difficult unless you're familiar with the secret spots in the area! Overall this is a good place to go if you enjoy your alcohol and/or bar food! read more

We came in on a Wednesday evening and to our surprise they had some lovely live music going on. The dining space is large with plenty of seats. We arrived and were sat immediately. The menu wasn't overwhelming, plenty of familiar options. Our food came out in a timely manner. Our party definitely enjoyed our food. We got a variety of entrees. We had a great bartender, very on top of everything and made nice drinks, food is very tasty but I would probably just do take out.... they have the same sneaky practice as the Painted Burro and slip in a kitchen tax and do not let you know, they just throw it on the bill. Sunset is so much more than a BU spot! All of their food is good but we would always get the nachos and it's hard to order much more than that as they're huge and a full meal in itself. Definitely get them with the pulled pork added. Their margaritas are also very good, especially the mango. The lines can get pretty crazy here but it's definitely worth the wait! read more

A popular spot during college, I refused to believe people's warnings that the quality of the service and food at Sunset has grown worse ever since they went through some changes and renovation. It was one of those things that I had to see to believe--and now I'm a believer! Though our waitress was super sweet, it became quite clear to me that service is lacking. A server knocked my menu right from my hands and didn't even dare to look back to apologize. Then JUST as I was about to take the first bite of my quesadilla, I was stopped by another server who told me that they had given me the wrong order. After our meal, it took us forever to track down our waitress so we had to physically get up to get our own to-go boxes. Not my idea of quality service!  In terms of food, prepare to eat A LOT.  My friend and I made the mistake of ordering way too much food (but hey, is that ever a bad thing?!)  We ordered a half size of buenos cheese nachos to share, while we got our own separate entrees. The half size nachos were HUGE- definitely substantial on its own if you are not that hungry. Paired with a half serving of Blacken Chicken for my entree-I was utterly stuffed. Taste wise, I found both to be good, though nothing special.  Service here is not perfect and the food is not the best BUT I do like it for its location, huge portions and reasonable prices. Will most likely be back--but after my last visit, probably less frequently. read more

I've been here multiple times for different events ... they water down their top shelf liquor in the actual bottles. They add on automatic gratuity and even charge a "kitchen" fee as well. Many other customers have experienced this. One has reported to the city. read more

I absolutely love sunset cantina. The food and drinks are amazing, and reasonably priced. We ordered house nachos, shrimp tacos, chicken wings, and pina coladas. The portion size for the house nachos are extremely generous. The shrimp tacos are delicious. They are different from regular shrimp tacos, which are usually fried. The tacos comes with a side of beans and Mexican rice. Students get 15% off food and it is a popular spot during the school year. Service was excellent and our server, Alfonso, was super nice! I used to come here when I was in college, circa 2011, and it was fine for a college bar. The time have changed! Solid food menu (chicken tortilla soup and Birria tacos were BOMB). Thursday night had a solid DJ and cool dance spot. Plus Thursday night football and hockey on the TVs. Huge plus. Bartenders were attentive and chill. And the bar is huge. No need to get a seat if you'd rather stand or chill at the bar. Highly recommended and I will be coming back. read more

Service was amazing, their bartenders wore a smile the whole time, that's when you know you walked into a great spot. the manager Brendan was very friendly and made sure everything was to perfection. DJs set the vibes correctly, Silvia and Fiona were very kind from the second I walked in to the second I left. THOSE TACOS BY THE WAY!!! An absolute steal and bargain for the amount of flavor that they pack. Rest assure I will be back and highly recommend this place to all college kids and surrounding neighbors in the area. The first time I went here I was not very impressed. My friend and I talked about it for months because she had been and loved nachos. The first time, I went on a Tuesday, since they have $3 tacos. Honestly, I'm glad we went that day because I was a bit disappointed with the tacos. They weren't bad but I have definitely had better. Felt like something was missing. I also tried the coconut and classic margaritas. I have to say The classic margaritas are good. My second time there was a lot better experience. We ordered the 1/2 south of the border fiesta nachos, which was really good. Seems like a lot of people go there for the nachos. It was reasonable $9.50 and you get a pretty generous portion. I believe you can go on a Wednesday and they are 1/2 price. Definitely Worth it. If you are in the mood for dessert, you have to order the Mexican churros! $7.50. They are to die for. My friend is still talking about going back just for that. Let's talk parking! There is a lot that you can park in and they validate for 2 hours I believe. Great thing there is parking, however we stayed for maybe 15 minutes over and had to pay $3. Not sure why that was the case considering people may stay longer if they are enjoying their time. I used to love sunset! A great place to hang with friends, catch up and get some drinks. However I went recently and it just kind of ruined everything. My friends and I went all summer here for their $6 weekly rotating margaritas, which were a genius idea!! We ordered so many every time we went, but when we came back a few days ago, the server told us they didn't have it anymore. Very sad, especially because I personally think sunset was making a lot more money off of it since a lot of people got the $6 weekly margaritas. The food and deals are always great. My only issue is that some of the servers are a hit or miss. We always get wonderful servers, but this time we got a really grumpy one who didn't seem to want us to have fun, which was really off putting. Especially when we were curious about why sunset suddenly discontinued the $6 margaritas, he was being very rude and passive aggressively said something along the lines of "I just told you we don't have it so we don't have it, deal with it. Just get a flavored margarita that's on the menu and stop asking me." My whole group was shocked because we just asked once. It was upsetting for all of us but we tried to move on. I don't think we'll come here as often anymore though. Those $6 margaritas were a great reason to spend our money and they're gone sadly (but hopefully they come back!!), plus that server scared us and we don't want to risk having him again. He didn't even introduce himself so we don't know his name. Still tipped well though because working in this industry is tough. :( read more

My BU alum partner took me and some friends here two weeks back, raving about the nachos -- which were the whole reason we came. Sadly, our whole table felt sorry when all that arrived was about 10 chips with topping. We all felt the $16 price was a total rip off. Here's a plea to the restaurant managers to bring back at least moderate portion sizes for the nachos and give your customers both an explanation and an apology. read more
