The restaurant is vibrant and alive.. loved the covered upper deck dining option (Which on a hot, breezy night.. Was worth the wait) We ordered, were famished and couldn't wait to dig in.. 1) The clam chowder was packed full of clams and potatoes (and perhaps had a little cheese added?) and arrived cold. 2) The adult Bevs were weak pours. 3) The cold shrimp app (which was my dinner) looked like an afterthought.. No arrangement or garnish, arrived a slippin' and a slidin' all over the place without purpose when placed in front of me. 4) ahi tuna tacos were ok.. While the amount of tuna in the tacos was "omg wow".. It would've nice if tuna was cut up in edible chucks vs long strands. This is a hard review and falls between 2 and 3 stars. We came for dinner and we waited a while because came at the busiest time of the night. We ordered the crabby fries as an appetizer and they were pretty good. The hostess did slam her with tables when we just got our meal, and although there seemed to be 2 or 3 managers walking about, none of them focused on the guests who were already seated. They were more focused on getting more people sat. So we sat there really in need of drinks for too long with so much management all around us and me looking around like "hey! Shrimp was to be expected as a fried option, side salad was good but the vinaigrette made it great. On vacation here and went to go out to eat and thought this place would be good because of the reviews.. well I walked in with my family and there was no masks in sight. The hostess was not wearing a mask and even though every one of us was wearing one she seemed to still not care to put one on. Then we sat to eat and our server had one on and after putting our drink orders in she came back with no mask and didn't put one on for the rest of the time. I looked around and none of the other servers had one on. There was one guy who had one on out of several staff. The food too was okay, I got fish n chips which the chips where potato wedges and it seemed like I was eating a raw potato. The fish was good here. I had high expectations for this place but during a pandemic and not wearing a mask just isn't right. Especially when you have people at your table who are elder and are at risk. read more

I am in St. Augustine with friends for Easter weekend. We realized the popularity of this restaurant and approached the hostess to put our name in for a table of five. Understanding that it is a Friday night and that we are a larger party, we planned on putting our name in and then strolling on the beach until our table was ready, however long that may be. The hostess politely told us that the wait would be around 1.5 hours and right after she said that, an older male employee spoke over her and aggressively told us that we should set very low expectations because there are plenty of people waiting ahead of us. We expressed that we did not mind waiting and that it would be totally ok and he proceeded to tell us over and over that our wait would be extremely long. The encounter became awkward as it seemed like an employee from this very restaurant did not want us to eat here. We had walked into this restaurant on Good Friday, excited to try their award winning New England clam chowder as we are from the northeast. We met another couple for lunch today at the Sunset Grill. We have been coming here for years and past meals were very good and enjoyed. After receiving our drink order (two warm beers) and proceeded to order appetizers. We ordered coconut shrimp and mozzarella sticks. The coconut shrimp was very bland. There was just a few pieces of coconut on the outside and very thick breading. The shrimp had no flavor at all. This is not just my opinion but everyone that tasted it felt the same way. I've had better frozen coconut shrimp purchased in the frozen food department of the grocery. It didn't taste like either coconut or shrimp. Someone came by and I voiced my concerns. Not sure where this went. My wife ordered the ultimate fish sandwich and I ordered to fish and chips. Both entrees of fish were bland and tasteless. The fish in the fish and chips was not battered as expected, and the chips were greasy wedge potatoes. We were very disappointed with the $50 meal. I had to clean our table ourself and our kids highchair and when I did my wipe was completely black after. I would recommend takeout so you don't get you or your kids sick. We tried the grilled Mahi ( Fresh catch) and the coconut shrimps. We had baked sweet potato and house salad on the side.. Everything was fantastic. Don't let the line/wait put you off. They told us 75 minutes but we were seated within 35-40 minutes. The crowd is a sign of how good this place is. My son had the lobster Mac n cheese and couldn't stop talking about it. I had the shrimp toast and it was wonderful. We all loved the place. Waitress (Jackie) was awesome. Gave solid advice on our order and was super nice and everything you could ask for in a server. Food was incredible and atmosphere was what you want in a beach seafood restaurant. We had average service that seemed artificial at times. A great deal of VERY young people working there. The food was below average. Many items on the menu were not local and our waitress had no clue about the shrimp. We live in the Midwest and only eat seafood when we are near an ocean and we want it to be locally caught. This place had amazing food. I had peel and eat shrimp. They were huge and fresh. We also had the spinach artichoke dip with chips (very good). We got the fish nuggets which were cooked perfectly. My husband got scallops (his favorite). Couple of our kids had hamburgers and fries...not fans of seafood (ugh! Hahah!!). No matter what we all are we loved it. The portions were so big we took some home with us. The server was super nice & the manager even came out and spoke to us. He was from the same area we are. We sat out on the covered patio. This place was highly recommended by St. Augustinians on a Facebook Feed I was following and when I saw all the fantastic reviews, I suggested it to friends as we were driving into town. Be forewarned. Parking is a b#$%^ if you arrive around lunchtime on a Saturday. And any street parking is essentially nonexistent. We almost gave up and drove away to find other places to eat at but when we didn't see anything that peaked our interest, we came back and, lo and behold, a spot in the very front opened it up. Maybe it was a sign? To be honest, this is your typical local restaurant by the beach. With table service. We were seated in a swift manner and perused the menu. We were starving so each of us(3 people total) ordered an appetizer to start to share. When the appetizers came out, we grumbled to each other since we had JUST ordered our entrees. If we'd known how HUGE the appetizers would be, we wouldn't have ordered entrees. I know it's not the job of the waitress but just wish she could've mentioned that. Maybe then we would've actually been able to order dessert! :/ Anyways, I ordered the fried pickle appetizer which , I swear, was the size of an entree plate! My friends ordered the mahi fish dip and the spinach artichoke dip. Wayyyy too much food . The plates took up our entire table. So what does that tell you? On a positive note, everything was really good but we barely finished everything. For our entrees, two of us ordered the grilled mahi fish tacos while another ordered the fried fish tacos. These were massive tacos(2 to a plate) and , again, if I had known what I know now, I would've ordered a plate to share. The piece of mahi in each taco was quite generous and sat on their bean and cheese dip on a tortilla topped with cabbage, crispy corn tortilla strips and chipotle ranch dressing. One taco was more than enough for me and , sadly, the other taco went to waste since we were staying at a hotel. I do have to mention that the side of black beans and rice were exceptional. Not sure what they put in there, but they did hit the spot. I tried my best not to let them go to waste. The waitress came by and asked if we wanted dessert. I almost shot her a dirty look but refrained. It was my inner grouchy side coming out. In a nutshell, it's a good environment (aside from the crying baby that wouldn't stop crying) and the portions are good, hefty and affordable (pace yourself when you eat here and SHARE dishes). I enjoyed a late lunch with some friends here on a recent visit to St. Augustine. The food was really good, but between the headache of trying to find parking, the slow service, and how loud the dining room was (I am going to be one of THOSE people and complain about a crying baby), I don't know know if the food alone will bring me back. Maybe I was just having a cranky day, but the loud baby on top of the loud parties around us was just a little too much. But I guess that isn't really Sunset Grille's fault. When we were seated, it took a little bit for our server to greet us and take our drink order. It was busy-ish, but there were empty tables, and from what I could tell, a lot of staff walking around. We ordered three appetizers, as we were super hungry, but it would've been nice if we had been warned that the portions are enormous. The Mahi fish dip was fabulous, served with pita chips instead of the usual crackers and veggies. We had enough fried pickles to feed the whole South- they were delish but man, do they give you a lot! The artichoke and crab dip was also really good- very creamy and melty, the way it should be. I feel terrible that I ordered the Mahi fish tacos and didn't really get to enjoy them the way they were meant to be enjoyed, as I was too full from our slew of apps. We were visiting from out of town, so taking the food for later wasn't really an option. The fish was very good, served on a layer of refried beans and flour tortillas. I ended up just eating the fish and toppings, sacrificing the tortillas. The black beans and rice that come as a side have this really great flavor that I just can't place. I was so sad that I could not finish this meal! After all this food, our server asked if we wanted dessert. I almost wanted to scold her for letting us order as much as had already. But I guess that is not her fault. It just would've been nice if we were asked if we had dined there before so she could let us know about the portion sizes. read more

I ordered the Ultimate Fish burger because of all the yummy slaw, but instead I got a greasy fish, about 1/2 Cup of mayonnaise, and about a teaspoon of cabbage salad on each sandwich half. I asked for double fries, but received a single serving. When I asked for more cabbage, I was informed that they were out. we ordered dessert, but they never brought it. Some of the best seafood and service we had at the beach was here at Sunset Grill somewhere off A1A. This past weekend as Tropical Storm Beryl was barreling down on the beach we made our way a few blocks to Sunset Grille where we grabbed a table outside on the covered patio where enjoyed way too many drinks of Sweetwater 420 and Grey Goose before the storm ran us into the bar area where I our server from outside found us a table. While we were enjoying our drinks and the storm we tried the Crab Fondue for an appetizer that was the total bomb. What is that not to love about crab meat, cheese, and crab legs hanging out of a bread bowl! After we moved inside our waiter had to give up our table to the waitress working inside that also took very good care of us, but just wasn't as cool as the waiter we had outside. We hated that our original waiter lost our table and tipped him very well before transferring over the check to the new waitress. She did take very good care of us though and made sure to keep our beers and cocktails flowing during dinner. Dinner arrived and we were very pleased by our meals. I had the coconut shrimp that was absolutely delicious! The girls at the table both had crab legs and our other friend had the sea bass; all of which they said they thoroughly enjoyed. By the time dinner was over I didn't want move as I was in a state of total food coma intoxication. I just wanted to lay down right there and take a nap, but the place was packed out and there were people wanting the table, so we totally played favorites and let a two couples next to us have our table when we got up. All in all, the Sunset Grille is awesome and I totally recommend it when in St. Augustine at the beach. We stopped here after a day at that beach and it's one of our favorite spots this trip. Seated immediately outside and server was great. Food came out quickly which we loved since we have a toddler. The drinks were really great and so was the food. I'm a big fry person and these were super good. Husband ordered a burger which he loved and I got the bang bang shrimp.
