Sunset Sushi has some of the best sushi in Palm Beach County (perhaps the best) and I don't think there are many restaurants that even come close and it stands in a league by itself. It's owned by the same company that runs the Sushi by Bou mini empire and while that Omakase is somewhat budget friendly, this is a totally different dining experience. The cost is $150 plus tax, tip and beverages, so depending on whether you choose a sake pairing, select wine or champagne, it's going to be difficult leaving here without spending a minimum of $250 a person but it's worth it. However, the cost is why I gave four stars instead of five because at that price one should expect cloth napkins instead of cheap one ply paper napkins. There also should be a changing of dishes instead of the same base plate used all night. Presentation is usually taken seriously in Omakase dinners (certainly the dinners I've had in Japan were) and that was lacking here. The other issue is that some of the nigiri was over sauced or with a sauce that either fought with or overwhelmed the nigiri. A brushed on truffle paste didn't enhance the fish but fought with it and left a bad taste in my mouth. With great fresh sushi - simplicity is the key and less is more. These are minor issues that are easily correctable and beside the great dishes more than compensated for one or two less than stellar items. Diners get a personal or semi-personal experience, with a friendly and knowledgeable sushi chef who patiently explains all the dishes. Most nigiri but for a piece or two were excellent and the quality was superior to just about every other sushi restaurant in South Florida. There is a minimum of nineteen courses and I understand that each one can't be perfect and most of the dishes I enjoyed. Immensely. There is a lot of food served and you will leave full and satisfied. This isn't just dining but its a great experience that if any sushi lover can manage it they should try it. I go to Japan often but because of Covid I have not gone in almost two years and this is as close as you will get to a Japanese Omakase in South Florida. I enjoyed this much more than the famous Hiden Restaurant in Wynwood, Miami and that was more money. How much did I like Sunset Sushi? I already made reservations for my next visit. read more

If you want the absolute best sushi, this is the place. Restaurant seats 8 people at the counter and that's it. No tables. There are 3 seatings each night. Make a reservation well in advance. You'll be required to pay 1/2 up front. The place itself is fairly unassuming, nice but comfortable and friendly. There's no menu, it is Omakase style - you will be served 15-17 small dishes of the chefs choice. The 2 chefs are really nice and pleasant and great at explaining what each dish is. I can honestly say that absolutely every single thing I was served was absolutely delicious. Super fresh, soft and buttery, lightly seasoned with with fabulous condiments like truffled pearls, garlic salt, chives, etc. You will never want to have "regular " sushi again. Unfortunately, unless you are at Bill Gates's income level, this is going to be only an occasional splurge. Dinner for two, with one beer, tax and tip, cost just a bit over $400. Even at that price I can't say I'm sorry I went, it was just fabulous. And if you can afford it, I'd highly recommend you go. I will definitely go back if my finances allow! read more

Simply put, buttery, silky, fresh fish are prepared properly by delft hands in an intimate but lively, humble setting. This is not an inexpensive meal ($150 +), especially if you are going to be drinking from their delicious and well-thought-out Sake menu. We opted for the sake tasting ($60) which consisted of 4 glasses (around a 3oz pour each) of different depths of rice filtration. There is an art to drinking sake which was explained, but in all honesty, I forget. I just know I enjoyed each and every glass and that I did not feel gross or have any form of headache when I woke up which often happens when I drink the cheap, hot stuff at a local sushi place. As far as the fish goes, my favorites were: Hamachi with chives King salmon with truffle caviar Komatsu Seaperch Hotate Scallop topped Charcoal sea salt Kampachi longfin yellowtail with fried shallot Blue crab crispy rice with truffle caviar (my other favorite) The sushi and sashimi preparations are of a quality you can only get from a true artisan, which they most certainly are here. I can't say enough good things about Tuna Tuesday. I have never been served fresher tuna, literally they were serving tuna right off the fish - it was wild. The vibe was so energetic and the amount of both sushi and other high quality Japanese dishes was so lovely. The pastrami sando was incredible as was the hot fried chicken and wasabi caesar salad. I have enjoyed omakase around NYC, LA, and even in Japan - and Sunset Sushi has it perfect. It it some of the freshest and most unique dishes, that make you feel like you're tasting Japan. One of the most magical pieces was the salmon with truffled caviar on top. I could eat 100 of these! Best omakase that I've found in Palm Beach. They've also an amazing spot by the beach called sushi by bou. The beach location isn't quite as good (or expensive) but the view is amazing. (I would have picked 4.5 but they don't have...I left one star off to inspire them to be even better) I haven't written a review in a long time but I generally only review Japanese and Korean and Chinese food since I used to live in Japan and my wife is Japanese. The hardest adjustment we made when we moved here from NYC 25 years ago was the lack of good Asian cuisine particularly Japanese. Since the early days things have improved. You can get decent Ramen now locally and Izakaya and Korean about 45 minutes south/west. But really good sushi is the missing link. I have had good sushi in Miami but we really don't want to drive an hour on 95 both ways just for dinner. So tonight when I picked up we sampled the Sunset Omkase's Chef's Choice to go we were excited ...would we finally be able to get decent sushi right in our nabe? BTW I use the word 'decent' because we don't expect great. I've had sushi in some of the best sushi restaurants in Tokyo and you can't get that here. But even just regular cheap 'conveyor belt' sushi from a chain in a charmless suburban street in Chiba or supermarket sushi (really good and cheap!) is better then anything you will get here at a supposed 'sushi' restaurant that is usually a Thai restaurant with a sushi bar that uses the same blocks of frozen sushi from food wholesalers as every other 'sushi' restaurant. Without the great seafood markets you just can't have sushi only a facsimile that is marginally better then the plastic models they feature outside the restaurants in Japan. Ok let's get started. so first it smelled right when we opened the box...vinegar and fresh fish and a little soy sauce. Next: over-packed hard refrigerated rice drizzled in mayo based sweet sauces is another feature of Boca sushi. So what we wanted to see first was the quality of the rice which if its not right nothing else is either no matter how good he fish is. Rice is either right or wrong and this was right which is huge. Within 'right' however there is a universe of qualities and it gets pretty subjective and here I would say it disappointed me a little but my gratitude for just getting 'oishi gohane' (good rice) makes me really not care. (maybe just a jigger more vinegar? god I hate myself...when did I become such an obnoxious foodie?...well Japan will do that to you) Now on to the fish. So, its not hype. The fish is very good. I'm not going to describe each slice except to note: a) each was moist and buttery. b) each contained the actual unique taste of each fish. Sushi is not rocket science. It is 80% freshness and texture and 20% rice (I just made that up but let's go with it). We literally enjoyed each bite. $125 + tip may seem like a lot but I would rather spend that on a few good pieces then one of those giant sushi boats filled with tasteless garbage. Not that this is skimpy but we could have eaten more and next time will order two. (The rolls are ok if you like that stuff but the real action for us is the nigiri) The presentation was good and they give you all kinds of condiments not traditionally found at sushi bars like truffle salt (which is good!) Last note: the wasabi was really good- usually you get the stuff they squeeze out of tubes but this was much more like the actual radish root you get in Japan but which is hard to get here... So that's it...go'd so samadeshita! read more

My boyfriend and I frequent a ton of omakase places in NYC - but struggle to find great sushi when we're in South Florida. Sunset sushi was incredible. The chefs were talkative and answered a ton of questions. Chef Ben served us and did an awesome job. I've eaten a lot of fish but never Sea Perch - it was like a white fish toro. INCREDIBLE. Was super full by the end - a lot of good options that weren't just nigiri throughout. Loved the blue crab crispy rice. Only thing I could've skipped was the fried fish they gave as one of the last courses. It was good but too fried when I was already really full. Finished with red bean ice cream - so good. It is a very intimate dining experience and we'll worth it for special occasions and true sushi connoisseurs.
