Saved me $907.00! Following body shop work due to an accident, there was a scraping noise over bumps and turns. The body shop diagnosed it as needing new struts for $940.00. I went to Smith Tire for a second opinion and told Rich it was probably a strut problem; he said he needed to check it out. Turns out it was the cover for the fuel filler neck rubbing on the tire. Smith charge: $33.00. read more

I had a simple problem that was handled like it was a simple problem. The front shield under the front of the car fell down and was dragging on the ground. I pulled in and asked if they could take a look at it. They pulled it into the service bay, lifted the car and fixed it with their inventory of clips. Hardly charged me anything. They are a great neighbor in our community. read more

Brought a small tire in for new valve and to get filled. Seal to rim was very difficult but Rich worked on it for a bit and got it filled. Great people to deal with! read more

Was nearby when my car started dumping a ton of oil in my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Was worried I had a blown head gasket, and thankfully it turned out it was just an oil pressure sensor that has a huge leak. They fixed it in an hour on absolutely no notice, and charged me less than I had expected while i had my kid with me. You guys were awesome today, thanks again! read more

I had really basic work done - I had a flat and needed it fixed. Turned out to be a nail, and they removed it quick and easy. Less than 20minutes, and only 20 bucks! They were pretty friendly, and decent people. I guess if you need tire work it can't be a bad place to go! I can't speak for any of their other services but I do notice as well that they close really early. read more

This place is great! I went to a Toyota dealership last week and was told that I had a nail in my tire. One of workers told me that I could potentially get it fixed but they could not do it there. A different worker went on to tell me that the tire was non-repairable and tried to talk me into buying a $300 tire. I decided I would try another place and Smith Tire & Auto didn't hesitate to fix my tire without trying to talk me into buying a new one. I went in around 12pm and was out of there in less than 20 minutes. They saved me almost $300. Thank you! read more

These guys are GREAT!! The shop is a little bit "old school" (such that they only work M-F 8-5, no voicemail so you can never leave a message and when I went I got a verbal quote and a second quote hand-written on a piece of scratch paper) but if you can get past that - they do the best, most reasonably priced work I've been able to find. Plus, they remind me of a bunch of "good ole boys" at a hometown shop - guys who know what they are doing, who won't feed you a line of bull and who you can trust to do good work. I drive a 12 yr old Honda Civic w/ 215K miles. Naturally I didn't want to sink a ton of cash into it - but I needed some major upkeep work done to keep it running. I took it to a shop in Des Plaines where the guy told me he could do all the required work for $3,000 or $2,100 if I agreed to go with generic parts. Don at Smith's told me he could do all the "necessary" work (meaning some of what Des Plaines wanted to do was unnecessary) for $700! For that price - I could hardly pass it up. And, given that it was so much cheaper - I decided to have them fix a motor on my automatic windows that had been broken for 2 years. So - for more than $1,000 cheaper - I had all the work I needed done + some bonus work and now my trusty little car runs like a champ!! Totally recommend these guys and will be taking my car back there for any future repairs. read more

This place is amazing. I've been using them for car repair since I started driving and my parents have been using Smith's garage since the eighties. Rich, Don, and John are honest and they know what they're talking about. They fix what needs to be fixed and they don't fix what needs to be fixed. The dealership quoted me $9,000 worth of work that they said needed to be done immediately. I got another opinion over here and they didn't even do $900 worth of work. read more

The guys here are always pleasant, and they do a great job explaining my car troubles in terms I can understand. My only gripe is they close at 5:00, which makes it a little difficult when I prefer to pick my car up after work. A friend recommended Smith's to me, and I would recommend it as well. read more

Just like Matt, I needed a flat tired changed. Thankfully I was close by, so I was able to drive here. They said 30 mins and it was only 35. I paid only $15. The only downside was that they were supposed to call me later in the day with an estimate on my other tires. Hard to beat their friendly, quick, affordable service. read more

Rich Smith has been a Northbrook icon for 48 years. I just recently I have been going there to get my 2005 Ford Explorer repaired. There are mechanics, John and Don. Don is the one I have been working with. They are all honest and great mechanics. You certainly trust them, they will tell you what needs fixing and things that don't. I find it rude and odd that out of the 4 places I called for an estimate yours is the only one that will not give me a quote via phone... I love them. I've been using them for about 7 years. I won't go anywhere else (unless I were to break down in the boonies). I wish they did auto body repair as well. This honest car repair and tire business is a rarity these days. John runs the business with Rich and Don. My older car and van have had brake work, radiator replacement, etc. by this repair shop to my utmost satisfaction. They do not keep suggesting items for repair like many shops do that are not needed. They honestly evaluate what needs to be done. I plan to continue being a customer in the future. read more

I should have run away after the $44 Oil Change, & my Dad RIP took all our Family Cars to Rich 40 years ago. Also, Rich Smith wasn't involved but it's His good name's over The Garage Still... So, I took it back the next day & googled the check engine light on the same car Smith over charged me via a tune-up a year earlier. I googled it out with an Advanced Auto Parts Video which went over every possible scenario & I should have been patient because my well-maintained Car likely just needed it's Oxygen Sensor Cleaned Out & me to "open the engine up on the Highway". Shame on Smith because my Friend Amy recommended Advanced Auto Parts a Day later on Facebook because "It probably needed a sensor cleaned-out" SHAME On Smith Once-Shame on Me Twice..."Manolo" that's a new name & John were in the Shop & the only parts that Smith hadn't touched during the tune-up that could have gone bad was The Only Repair over $250 which was The Home-Run For The Smith Guys:The Catalytic Converter for $900+ Labor. After picking my car up un-repaired- I was hit up for The aforementioned free-Advanced Auto Parts for The $60 hook-up a routine diagnostic code sensor just to spit out the worst case scenario which took them all of 20 minutes to hook-up, but bought Them both Lunch on Me M-F that week...Run Away read more

I'm always leary of car repair shops, having dealt with the rip-off folks at dealers. But Smith is great. We've taken 2 cars there for everything from oil changes to new batteries to new break pads and more, and we've never been disappointed. The are so reasonably priced and honest. A neary-by car dealer told us that our old beater needed nearly $4,000 in repairs (I think the car's worth about half that), wanting--I'm sure--to sell us a new car. We took the old beater to Smith and spent all of about $75 to fix what really needed to be fixed. Recently asked them to replace some wiper blades totally forgetting that they just replaced them a couple of months ago and when I went to pick up the car, they had just cleaned the blades. Said their records showed we had just gotten the blades replaced and why spend the money? Gotta love that! read more

Smith Auto is the best! I have been using them for over 25 years and they are like part of the family. I used them for repairs when the kids were growing up and now our kids also use them. I like to keep my cars for a long time so they come in handy once a car starts getting a lot of miles on it. I shudder to think what I would have had to pay if I needed to get my car repaired at a dealer. There are three mechanics and they are all knowledgable, friendly, efficient and honest. I hope they never close down otherwise I will be thrown to the wolves so to speak trying to find someone like them.
