we were in the altadena area and needed to buy some produce so I yelped market. i haven't ever seen such a highly, popularly yelped supermarket before so of course we had to swing by. No regrets! Large parking lot (same plaza as panda express), inexpensive produce prices (onions were 25 cents per pound!) with a great variety including more difficult to find hispanic items, awesome meat counter (69 cents per pound for chicken drumsticks, $2 per pound for fresh whole catfish) with marinated meats and even more rare items like lamb. i also really liked the variety of ethnic breads, bulk items section, and agua frescas at the deli section. dude, they even make their own smoked gouda - crazy! read more

I have found the mecca of grocery stores on a budget! My mom has had nothing but good things to say about Super King and has been coming here for years. I finally decided to make the trip and now its part of my bi-weekly routine. The store is enormous and has just about everything you need at a discounted price. The produce section has a wide variety of veges/fruits and they are always fresh. I am constantly buying fruit from here because it's the tastiest. This grocery store is the closet you are going to get before going to a farmers market. Compared to Vons/Ralphs this is the place to go for meats/seafood. As a young adult, I am on a tight budget and don't like spending my shopping money on food. I come here to get the deals. They have it all: pork, steak, shrimp, even cow brains and lamb heads (haha). Since I live 30- minutes away I tend to get enough meat for a couple weeks. I just freeze what I don't immediately use. In regards to everything else: spices, toiletries, juices, etc this place really does have everything you need and more. I am always finding something new to try out. read more

There are a lot of good things I can say about this place. -They have good meat and they used to have great prices on the asada. -They have very good prices on a number of things. -They are very close to my house. -Again, very good prices. Sadly that is not where the review ends. -The parking lot is a nightmare. -They have one "15 item or less" line and they do not seem to enforce it. -No self check out. -Slow check out process. (they always need at least 2 more lanes open) -No cash back with debit card. -They close at 9:00pm!!! -And they have to follow the stupid "no free grocery bags" law. Last Thursday on the 4th, I was looking for a box of Strike anywhere matches. I stopped here and they did have them but only in packages of three boxes. (Three BIG boxes) Of course, the useless strike on box matches were available in one box. I was a little short on money so I decided to go somewhere else. I am convinced that Super King has the LOWEST prices on produce in the country. I discovered Super King while googling a place to buy Middle Eastern products about a year ago. Super King showed up and I've been going there ever since. There is a wonderful variety of products for Arab, Iranian, Armenian and Mexican customers (I've also seen a lot of items common in Indian and East Asian cuisines). I remain impressed at the very extensive variety of produce at Super King, which often carries goodies like fresh pistachios or fresh almonds or fresh grape vine leaves (when in season). When on sale, you can get a variety of teas (they carry many of the most popular tea brands in the Middle East), yogurt, cheese and cold cuts, pickles, tomato paste, condiments and chicken at incomparably low prices. The parking lot could be bigger, but I've never had a problem finding a parking spot. And with such great prices, I don't mind waiting a few minutes to get a space. The cashiers are always very friendly, and go out of their way to say hello and thank you. The deli can often be crowded, but I would say you usually don't need to wait more than five minutes to be served. Having been to dozens of different supermarkets, I conclude that Super King has the absolute BEST prices (on most items) and a really excellent variety of products. Cheap food but not the best quality or customer service. Monday afternoon - 6pm. Lines are crazy. Shopped around for 15 minutes. Waited in line to check out for 20 mins. After I checked out I noticed there was a MOSQUITO in the chicken! I get directed to customer service -- another 20 mins. I was told to grab another chicken (it was needed for dinner) and the exchange would me made. I grabbed another packet, come back to wait yet another 15 mins and was charged MORE for the 2nd packet. I get it. It was $1 more than the prior one. And at that point I just wanted to pay and get out. But seriously?! 70% of your shopping here is waiting in line. read more

Super King Market is the best - pricewise there is no comparison! Meat selection and variety is wonderful. The only thing that isn't the lowest price is the cheeses, but that's not a diet staple for me so it isn't a problem. I had the caterer for my wedding shop here, and to feed 100 folks chicken breast and filet mignon, the entire total was just UNDER $300. I prefer this location over the Glassell Park one, as the GP one is full of Armenians, and the one in Altadena is just as crowded at times...but the people there are much more decent and civilized. Liquor is so cheap at Super King that my husband has 'caught' a daily beer habit! The variety of herbs and produce here is astounding. Our family eats kale religiously. Whole Foods sells kale for $1.99 a bunch (non-organic) and $2.99 (organic). Super King is $0.69 cents per bunch. read more

I really loved the price here but it's quite a hike to get to Altadena from where I'm at. I called today to find out the price of an item and they refused to give it to me over the phone. They explained it was to make sure their competitors couldn't call to get pricing to drop theirs lower. I totally understand that but to be treated like I was the competitor myself and not a loyal customer (that I have been) is bullish*t. Vartan G the manager was not only rude but refused to take my call after the checker who answered the phone was rude herself. It wasn't until I told them I would hold for him that he decided he would come. Food For Less is a little more expensive but right around the corner from my house. I still love this store - they did wonderfully tasty and beautiful cakes for my daughters' birthdays last year but got the name wrong on one cake (so make sure you check that!). The fruit department is lovely, such variety and amazing prices! This update is about the meat. I have had to stop buying the meat here. They stopped carrying the Harris Ranch and beautiful meat a long, long time ago. Their own meat looks nice, and there is a huge variety of it, but there is a REAL problem with it going bad too quickly. The last 3+ times I have bought meat, and it has been less and less over the last couple of years, the meat has gone rotten daysss before the expiration date. *My fridge is colder than recommended and I am a careful meat handler after working in restaurants for years. I am also sensitive to bad meat and have had food poisoning countless times in my life, so this matters a lot to me. I have bought steaks, beef shank, pork chops, and chicken legs and thighs - all have started to get brown and smelly before the labeled SELL BY date. The chicken was slimy and rancid 2 days before the date, not just iffy, but really bad. I am not really saving money if I have to throw away the damn food! Plus who has time to got shopping twice?! --I know I could have returned the meat and complained - but I no longer live nearby the store, I have young kids and I am a grad student... Super King is the best grocery store I've visited in LA area. The fresh produce, vast selection of international foods, and inexpensive prices makes it a big sell. The only thing I wish they had more of were organic options, but overall, this place is great. There were at least 3 items I found here that I'd never seen available anywhere else in the US: fresh jackfruit (delicious!), fresh chickpeas, and all of the Baltika beers produced by the brewery in St. Petersburg. read more

I love this place. I cut my grocery bills in half since I started shopping here 2 months ago. And I feed a family of 4. Their produce & meats are really affordable, so it forces me to cook more healthy food for the family too instead of ready made stuff. I now plan my meals for the week, when they come out with their new flyers every Wednesday. And my husband loves this place because he gets to try the different Middle Eastern goodies there. Their deli section is awesome, because we buy different deli meats that are on sale for the week instead of the package foster farm type. You can get a pound of turkey pastrami for $ 2.50, Smoked Turkey for under 3 bucks a pound, and whatever else is on sale. Another section that I love is the nuts/dried fruit sections. I found this because i was looking for sliced almond for baking, and I couldn't find it at the aisles, lo and behold there is a section right before you exit the store of just nuts and fruits that you can buy by weight. I literally never spend more than 70 bucks every week and a half shopping for groceries now. Its a little out of the way, but worth the drive. read more

Jaw-droppingly cheap produce and meats. Great selection of ingredients for middle eastern (probably 30 different brands of canned chickpeas, labneh, cheap pita and lavash) and mexican cooking (dried chilies, variety of mexican cheeses). Produce is good quality and if in season, they often have hard-to-find items like fresh garbanzo beans, green almonds, squash blossoms, etc. at a fraction of the farmers' market cost. COME EARLY, especially on weekends. It gets packed and the parking lot can be a nightmare. Ignore the reviewer who said the area is "scary." It's not at all (I live a couple minutes away). read more

this is an ALMOST 5 start for me, only issue is really the parking and crazy ppl who shop here, which I know isnt the stores fault. They just have the BEST prices around. I LOVE THIS PLACE! But when you go, be prepared to deal with the masses!! I try to go with out my kids, when I have some time so that I dont get bothered by ppl trying to cut me off or steal my parking place (which has literally happened here, having someone squeeze past my car as I was pulling into a place and take that place from me... all while over 6 month preggo too! - whole other story sorry) Produce - fantastic quality and GREAT prices! Seem to always have a special on tomatoes, which I love! Meats - often they have Fillet Mignon for 3.99 a lbd. Not bad! They have great weekly meat specials and good quality too! The butchers are really nice. Deli - FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC!! they have WONDERFUL prices on cheeses, fresh fetta's from all over the world and great deli meats... mmmm yummy sammiches are in my future today! The only things I try to avoif having to buy here unless on special are eggs and pre-packaged cheeses. Those things are rather expensive there. This is a rare find, after my friend who is a student at cordon bleu culinary school told me about this place. Grocery price are consistently cheaper than other supermarket by 20-50%. Wow, that's a lot of savings. Bought the Atlantic salmon for $5.99 lb, marinated chicken breast Milanese $2.49 lb, beef stew $3.99 lb, four big grapefruit for .99 cents, just named a fews for the fellow Yelpers. Everything are fresh, lots of customers, large turnaround. Check online at their website, they have a weekly specials which even saves you more. So glad to have found this place! read more

People get paid to do a job and when people are too lazy to do a job or they hate their they should find something else they like to do. I go to this place all the time and I always ask for them to just cut some ribs Thiner then the ones they have for what I like to cook and they always give me pushback and I tel them that I get them all the time. Once t tell them that they go ask the person in charge and the guy that is always there which is really nice he always does it because I go there all the time and I don't just buy one pound. But today there was another guy that I haven't seen before in charge. Like always the first person didn't want to do it and he went to ask the person in changer and instead of doing what's right he came to me told me that they were out which is a straight lie. I will not go back to that place and I will tell all my friends not to go back there because the people that work there are too lazy to do something they get paid for. read more

Being a very frugal person and new to the area, I decided to try Super King Market out, hoping they would have cheaper food than Ralphs', and hallelujah, that place has now saved me so much money on produce. I can only speculate how their fruits & veggies are soooo cheap (imported directly from mexico or nearby farms, maybe? or because they sell such huge volumes of product?) but everything I've bought here has always been very fresh and tasty. Onions $.33/lb, Spinach $.59 a bunch, oranges $.33/lb, lemons 12 for $1, celery $.50 each, cilantro $.20 a bunch - come on?!! Definitely beats a lot of the haggard-looking overpriced produce at Ralphs or Vons. The meat section is OK too, and they have a ton of dry rice/beans but basically I come there for the fresh produce, and then get the hell out of there, because the place is a MADHOUSE, even on weekdays around noon. So many people crowding the aisles with these huge carts (carry a basket if you can). Parking is ridiculous - I've given up and started parking in the lot across Acacia street, then just walking a little extra. The checkout staff is extremely fast, which is a plus. read more

I love this market cause they have great produce for low prices. It's not in the best area so I recommend going in the day time. Their herbs, veggies, and fruits are always fresh and much cheaper than vons/ralphs. Their alcohol selection is pretty good and very reasonably priced. The only downside is parking. It gets super crowded so I recommend going early in the day so you don't have to fight for a space or try the back lot or street parking. read more

Why didn't you guys tell me there was a Super King in Altadena??? When I moved to South Pas, I was planning on still going to the Los Angeles location, because the produce selection and the prices were worth it to me. This Super King is cleaner, less insane, with a more civilized clientele -(not that I didn't get a kick out of Jewish grandmothers with Brooklyn accents ramming their carts into me, and putting my strategic problem solving skills into getting a parking place, and getting some Persian cucumbers, Arabic bread, or French cheese.) I was disappointed that they didn't have the big bins of nuts and dried fruit -but that's probably also the reason there aren't fruit flies swarming everywhere. Also, the male employees seem to be encouraged to flirt all the way up to -but not beyond sexual harassment. Oh well, I got all my bags loaded into my car heeeheee. read more

This place is fantastic! The store has a wide selection of produce for an unbelievably cheap price. The fruits and vegetables are always so fresh. I haven't bought any meat from here before but the bakery section is really good - definitely get the Tres Leches! So yummy! Only problem is that there is not enough parking and this place is ALWAYS packed. Tip: If there's no parking at the lot, try across the street - there are spots on the roof dedicated to Super King and is just a slight walk to the market but it beats the stress of finding parking. read more

I've heard some good things about this place and my expectations were pretty high. I love ethnic markets because of the variety of different products in their offering. Super King didn't disappoint. They have a great selection of herbs and vegetables not seen at your chain supermarket or the Asian or Latino markets in the area. This place also has the largest selection of canned and jarred garbanzo beans I've ever seen. The one negative was that the market had a mildewy smell. Hopefully it was just an issue that evening. Not sure if there was a problem with their air conditioning but it was definitely a noticeable sent that smelled like wet rags left overnight. Nevertheless, I'd come back. read more

This is a large supermarket with every space crammed. It reminded me of a higher class Superior Market with Middle Eastern products thrown in. The meat was lower priced than the average Von's, of course. They had family packs of deboned chicken thigh-legs, which are so convenient, for $ 1.49 a pound. The produce is second quality but not bad if you choose the best out of the bin. Can't compete with 99 cents for 4 pounds for onions. The bakery had soft,fresh Mexican sweet bread conchas in every topping, The apple turnovers were flaky,full of apple filling and covered with crunchy sugar. Also, the lines went fast, for a Sunday afternoon. Wish there was one nearer than Claremont. Maybe they should look into the soon to be defunct Ralph's space on Arrow Hwy. in San Dimas, although that space is probably too small. read more

Their produce is amazing and their prices are out of this world! Since opening there have been some things that have made my shopping experience far from what it use to be. Here are some good and bad things. 1. Parking. It's horrible. You'll find a spot faster if you park across the street at the gym's structure. 2. Popularity. This is a good and bad thing. Good for them, bad for me. It's crazy. Not just one weekends but all the time! The best advice still is to go early in the day and get all your shopping done then. 3. Prices. They have gone up but the cost of food has gone up everywhere else too. You'll still be sure to save a nice chunk by shopping here but not as much as you may have several months past. 4. Proteins. They've expanded! When I first shopped with them when they first opened I didn't trust the meats in the cold case. Now they've upped their cuts and they look very very fresh! At this point in my life one of the most exciting things possible would be to find a new place to buy groceries... and I've found one (ya that's right, I have no friends and live in a cave). I originally stumbled across this place while time-wasting on yelp. Unfortunately their nearest location at the time was in Eagle Rock. But they had great ratings so I bookmarked the place and figured I might go for the drive one day. A couple days ago I received a flyer for their new store in Altadena so I gave it a try and I was quite pleased. Like other reviewers noted the produce is phenomenal; fresh, delicious, and very affordable. The meat department was well stocked and had great variety. I was a little disappointed though because I thought they might have a bit more ethnic foods. But that's alright as long as they keep up the high standards I'll be shopping here all the time. One thing that I found odd was the assortment of creatures working there. Nothing wrong with it at all, but if you go there watch out for the wooly mammoth! read more

I'd give it five stars if the meat and deli counters looked better. Can't beat the produce prices. Quality of the produce is inconsistent, but better than some other produce-only markets. Good selection of standard grocery items, too. We've found that the best shopping solution is: Costco for meats and bulk goods; TJ's for dairy, bread, wine and beer; and Super King for fresh produce. I never expected to do my produce shopping in Altadena, but it turns out that I spend a day or to per week here. A block away is the Business Technology Center - an oasis of startups. I stop at the Super King every time i drive by. In the summer, they have the best white/yellow peaches and nectarines, often for 50 cents or less per pound. Come fall, they had amazing satsuma mandarins for 33 cents per pound. Not to mention tomatoes, pears, lettuce and all kinds of other produce. Great selection of ethic spices, rice, bread and drinks. read more

I've been going to this market since before the renovation a few years back. I love Super King Market for the produce. You cannot beat their prices! Tomatillos - 2 pounds for $1; 10 bunches of green onions for $1; jalapeno peppers - 3 pounds for $1. Good assortment of vegetables and fruits. Nice assortment of cheeses too - I love the Armenian string cheese with caraway seeds! I've heard they have killer deals on alcohol and wine too but I usually get that from Trader Joe's. I agree with the other review - many household products are WAY more expensive than other grocery stores. The shopping carts are HUGE, and people have a tendency to walk and stop in the middle of the aisles, which can be annoying. However, I've had to move unattended carts out of my way, and no one minds. PARKING: Parking can be a nightmare, and the market always seems to be busy - weekday and weekend. You can park for free in the nearby parking structure or park on the street behind the market. read more

PROS - the store is clean and WOW, reviewers are right about prices. * 5 bunches of parsley - $0.99 * 4 lemons - $0.99 * 3 lb bag of onions - $1.29 * 16 oz jar of grape leaves - $3.99 (ralphs has it @ $7 for 8 oz jar!!!) * 1.5 lbs of 85% lean ground beef - $5.57 i left speechless; i had to check my receipt in the parking lot to make sure they got everything. i usually pay $25-30 at ralphs or fresh&easy for these few items. highway robbery!!! CONS - just about everything else * the crowds, the people who shop there are super pushy with no regard for personal space * shopping carts only - seriously, i couldnt find one basket. and the aisles dont accommodate the number of carts in the store. people were banging into other people & things. seriously, crowds of rude shoppers are like dumb cattle. even cows don't bump into each other as often as these people do. * parking lot - prepare to go to battle for an empty spot. suggestion, park on side streets overall, the shopping experience was like going to costco with the same number of shoppers but with a smaller parking lot and smaller aisles. at the very least, the store was clean and i paid very little for my groceries. but i left wondering whether the shopping experience was worth it. maybe it was bc it was a saturday? i hope so, i would like to go back another day and see if i have the same experience. read more

Always tons of great produce for cheeeeeeap cheap cheap. I was able to buy several potatoes, tomatoes, and onions and spent less than $2. Bring your own reusable bags, please. They usually have great meat sales on Tues and Weds, changing up the meats every week. It's a great way to build a meal plan around the sales. However, it is almost always crowded. I live less than 3 blocks away so I can walk, but on days that I stop by after driving to work, it's a hassle. Sometimes I just park at home and walk anyway, lol lucky me ~ The lines are also incredibly frustrating. I do understand it is a supermarket, so don't go here expecting the fastest service, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the express lane. There are customers who frequently don't know how to use the express lane, often an older couple who split their groceries in half and pay for them separately so they make the maximum item limit. There should really be stricter rules on that, maybe a multilingual massive sign at the beginning explaining how the line works...but that's just my opinion. Don't be in a rush if you go here, honestly. As much as I hate to say it though, the packaged items aren't as cheap. Better to go to the Wal-Mart [ugh] a few blocks up the street, but then again, why buy packaged food when you can get cheap produce here and make healthier meals? :) Grab yourself a crock-pot and go! Sometimes there are creepers; I was once followed around the store, but I just stayed in crowded aisles and stared him down when he tried to follow me in the line. I've seen a couple other creepers follow others around, but I think they're just in it to look, not bother. After all, this is a really packed store and I'm sure the old ladies gathering lemons would give creepers a serious beat-down. read more
