I loved reading all the comments except for GINA P, who is clearly not aware of the fact that we live in a diverse community. She lives in the pretty little bubble of La Canada but feel's it's ok to simultaneously shop and bash our neighborhood. go home, pay trader joes prices, eat boring/white washed food, and drive your "nice" car while you are at it. Came across this store last Sunday after church. After my first experience with Super King (Glassell Park/San Fernando Rd) recently, which was really horrible and unimpressive, I thought I would give another location a look. So glad I did. This local is so much better than the Glassell Park/San Fernando Rd local. The parking is so much easier to get to and the local seems better. The store is definitely not as crowded (maybe it was the time of day); very nice and relaxing and definitely not the insane mob like environment as the other store. The staff seemed so much more pleasant and it was so nice not to see people eating out of the barrels (EEEWWWEEE!!!) at the nut bar section. The ladies in the deli section were sooo much more friendly and accommodating. Same great produce and prices just a much nicer and more pleasant shopping experience. I just wish it weren't farther from my home. Maybe I'll start shopping on Sunday afternoons after church. Hmmm... read more

Fantastic store offering a wide selection of vegetables enough to fulfill the ingredients list from chefs of different ethnic backgrounds. Oh, the fruits are wonderful, lots and lots of them that last longer compared to other stores. Did I say, cheap? The large meat section has a butcher and pre-packaged meats. As in the case of deli section, make sure you take a number for service and wait to be called. They also have Liquor, Beer and Wine and a bakery section. I'm still grieving the loss of the cooked carnitas. It was so good. The reason for the 4 stars is the parking lot is often a zoo. Good news is, there is additional parking located at the parking structure across the street next to Bank of America. The rooftop section has parking spaces dedicated to SuperKing market parking only. Comes in handy during the Holiday rush or peak times. I don't think you can take the shopping cart outside of the Supermarket parking lot tho. So, it's a zoo, but they have plenty of security for safety. The isles are a bit narrow, so like Los Angeles you can expect gridlock as the shopping carts are gigantic sized. This store is definitely undersized for the volume of customers, and sometimes you have to navigate around large semi trucks making deliveries near the loading dock. Anyway, you'll be greeted at the checkout stand by the friendliest cashiers by far I've ever experienced. Takes a little effort to shop here, but it's worth it. Think fresh? Is it possible for a business to have such consistent horrible customer service? Yes, at the Super Ring in Altadena (gosh, I mean Super King). It can be a mental, stressful, exhausting place to shop, sometimes! Just knowing that you have to come to this store, days before, can be a complete drain! I shop here because produce is inexpensive (compared to must supermarkets), which works out great for my budget (thank you SK for this, but wait!). Today, going into SK, prices were out the roof (no kidding), I could hear customers around me complaining about this 100-150% cost increase. I can see prices (on items) going up and down, for obvious reasons, but mostly everything? So I got what I totally needed (in leaser quantity). ...By the way, what happened to the meat department, no advertisements on the walls (not the SK standard)? Got my stuff, and started looking for the best checkout station/counter (because you have too). ONE: To find the best line (which is normal). TWO: To find a checker (employee) that hasn't given you problems in the past - ha! Today I got the MGR, lucky me, right? She actually said say hi, which was very nice of her (saying hi to someone can really make a persons day), but I've been shopping here for a long time, and I know she's really not that nice (but of coarse I said hi back). After bagging up most of my stuff (which I have to do most of the time, but I don't really mind, because it speeds up the process), I got my receipt, said thank you, and proceeded out the store. Outside I always look at my receipt (before leaving SK), because 80% of the time, I get over charged for something, and I did (get over charged). So I went back inside, to get a refund at the front (liquor) counter (never a fun time). I stood there for 10 minutes, with no help (as employees are watching me stand there, with no acknowledgment, what so ever)! Finally I asked for some help, from the young guy putting liquor away (behind the liquor counter, watching me in need for help), and I asked for a MGR, and the employee pointed across me to the MGR (that checked me out, right behind me), and said "the MGR will help you" (I knew this was trouble). The MGR was now bagging groceries (unbelievable), where I was checked out. I walked over and ask for assistance, and the MGR pointed back to the counter, for me to get help there (where I started from). I then walked over to the section, where I picked up the item I bought to make sure I was (for sure) being over rung (and I was), and came back, and ask the MGR once again for some help please (got the same treatment)! Then a clerk showed up finanly, and helped the other person next to me first (and took really took his time, again, unbelievable). Finally the clerk (behind the counter) began to help me, by having another employee check the price first (and when she came back, she literally dropped the item in front of me, like a rock, and walked away), then the clerk got the MGR (behind me) to sign off on the refund (again, no acknowledgment, in fact, very unfriendly). I then spoke to the clerk and asked, "why is it so hard to get any kind of good service around here" (as I'm in a really bad mood now)? Of course he just sighed (no words/comment), and continued. After getting my refund (20-25 minutes later), I walked over to the MGR (across from me) and said "thank you for all your help, and for being soooooo freindly", and left the store (in a really crappy mood, and finished my shopping at other supermarkets). ----------------- Let me just say, I really enjoy taking the time out of my day to write a lengthy complaint on Yelp (about a business that I have been supporting for years), NOT! ...just couldn't let this one go!!! What's really really sad, is that I'll probably keep coming here, because I can't effort to shop at more expensive supermarkets (but maybe I will now, because of their 150% markup). My favorite grocery store when up here visiting my boyfriend. In a nutshell: The good - Selection, quality, pricing, nice staff The bad - a lot of the customers are RUDE, usually super packed The produce is ALWAYS super cheap, and pretty good quality most of the time. Be cautious though, when choosing the packs; (sacks of potatoes and bags of mini peppers/tomatoes) because if you aren't paying attention about 50% of the time you're grabbing a molded bag. The meat section is decently sized, and the butcher section is always packed. But the meat there is good, and I've never been disappointed. The deli is one of my 2 personal favorite sections, because they have a HUGE selection of cheeses and meats. Also, a decently sized selection of flat breads. The bakery is my daughter and boyfriend's favorite section, because they love the sweets. Good selection and a better tasting cheaper selection of breads if you're wanting to buy individually. The alcohol and beer there is really well stocked, and they have an amazing amount of options to choose from. Our go to spot to get our drink on at home for sure. My favorite part of the whole store is their tea selection. I love it. All kinds of teas, and every time I visit, I go back to San Diego with at least 6 boxes in my bag. (Try the strawberry tea!) I live in Arcadia and I often make the grueling painful drive on the 210 just to come to this store. I am a Russian immigrant but grew up in the USA and since moving to California have lamented not having many accessible European grocers in the area. Super King has it all. A fully stocked deli with rare hard to find meats and cheese, insanely priced quality produce and meet, a wonderful selection of reasonably priced wines and spirits and an eclectic collection of just about every kind of ethnic food you can think of. (I was particularly tickled with how many Russian and other Eastern European food stuffs there were, many hard to find in general!) I spent an hour in the store the first time just oggling the seemingly endless selection! Parking can be tight but most of the time I have found a spot with no trouble. read more

I really like this place. It stocks so many options in produce, and so far everything I've encountered is fresh and great. If you are into your herbs and spices, this place stocks them all. There are food and ingredient imports from Europe and Middle East, but they are not overpriced. The alcohol selection is very good and again reasonably priced. What a great local market! You will find excellent prices on produce, all of the regular stuff at the grocery store, but in addition, a fantastic selection of international foods. Here you will find Latin American products, Middle Eastern products, and almost everything in between. I love going here to explore possible options, and always leave with things I hadn't ever heard of before. I can't seem to find a listing for the King Market in Los Angeles (10min. away from Glendale) which I always go to. I've never been to the one in Pasadena, but the one in LA is just as amazing! Everything is cheap, especially for its quantity AND quality! I used to be a regular Trader Joe's shopper until I stumbled upon this place. Love the prices on produce but we went to get the salmon steaks advertised at $3.99 per pound. Then later realized they charged us $5.99 per pound. The woman behind the counter explained the prices on OUR flyer were only good at the Glendale store (as she pointed it says in tiny print at the bottom of the back page.) I thought it odd because Altadena Super King is closer to us that Glendale and I would expect a franchise with numerous stores to have consistent prices or at least put in large print on the front page: PRICES ONLY GOOD AT GLENDALE LOCATION. I love this store! The prices on produce cannot be beat. I usually shop just after it opens in the morning and it is never overly crowded. I stop at the deli and the bakery almost every time and have been very pleased with what I have purchased, and again, the prices are great! Great place to go shop for groceries. Not expensive and they have a great fresh variety of produce. The people Is ok not to helpful I use to buy my market at Vallarta Markets and the employees treat you better. The down side was the meat department. I chose a cashier (Rogi....)who appears to be nice but who ending up not . He used different attitude towards different customers. He showed impatience in serving me, (they installed a new machine for the membership card). He swipe the card so many times and even drop it on the floor and said nothing about it. Super King is where you go for inexpensive wide selections. Definitely not for their service. Their service is horrible and horrific at times. It's the most unprofessional and rudest I've ever seen. Even Food for Less and 99 cent stores are more friendly than the women cashiers. I have only encountered 3-4 nice female cashiers that are sincerely nice and helpful. The rest are the rudest, angriest and confrontational bunch of people I've ever experienced in any grocery stores. I think that if you're Armenian or Mexican, they might be nicer. They seem to be nicer to their own kind. I truly believe that it's not in their company culture to be nice to customers. If any of the employees in my company behaved the way they do, we would be fired. The cashiers never thank you and they have such an attitude like you are bothering them. They carry on conversations with their baggers in Armenian and Spanish loudly and sometimes you have to wait until they are finished to ask a question and they are annoyed. Often, they complain loudly about management and other customers as they're ringing up your produce. One time, an Armenian cashier had me put all my groceries on the belt. After I was done, she turned off her lights, turned around and began talking to her co-worker in Armenian. I asked her why she turned off the lights and she said, "I closed." Then she turned her back at me and continued on with her co-worker in Armenian. I asked her, "If you knew that you were closing, it would have been nice if you would have told me so that I didn't have to put all these groceries onto the belt. Now I have to put it all back onto the cart." She just shrugged her shoulders and continued talking to her co-worker in Armenian. No apology, nothing. I couldn't believe it. I stood there for another five minutes putting all of my groceries back into my cart. Once, a Hispanic lady working behind the deli area rolled her eyes and shaked her head when I asked her for 1/3 lb. of cheese unsliced - a request fulfilled many times before by other deli staff. I asked her why she was so frustrated and she shaked her head again and murmured to herself. She told me that they have 1/2 lb. already precut and insisted that I take the 1/2 lb. I replied, "I don't want 1/2. I want 1/3 lb. unsliced" I was calm and friendly and she had another meltdown - sighing, eyerolls, murmurs. It was horrific. I couldn't believe how repugnant and boorish she was. So I brought it to the attention of management. He was very nice and responsive. He immediately talked to her and she denied everything. I was standing a few feet away and I heard everything. Tonight, I got fed up with another rude cashier - Camry, African American - that was complaining in English to her bagger that she woke up in a bad mood that morning and wanted to go home but management wouldn't let her. This conversation was going on full blast in front of me and another customer waiting behind me. We can all hear her. She even stopped ringing up my groceries to complain with her bagger. She had a terrible attitude. I asked her nicely, "If you're in a bad mood, please don't take it out on your customers." She YELLED, "What have I done to you? What is it that I've done to you exactly?" I began to explain and she cut me off in mid-sentence and yelled at me again, "What is it that I've done you to again?" I slowly explained to her that she needs to be nice to her customers. Without us, she wouldn't have a job. She was so belligerent. She threw the change at me and shook her head! She waved her hand at me and shooed me away like a fly. Another horrific service experience. Then she turned around to another cashier and loudly complained about me in English so everyone can hear her even the customers. I heard her as I was leaving the market, 10 yards away. When you go to the bakery, the people working behind the counter are not exactly coming to help you. They are too busy. You have to hail them down to get anything. There are few that are nice and helpful but the most are not very helpful. On a brighter note, there have been a few helpful employees beyond these atrocious women that should be fired. One time, one African American gentleman helped me with my groceries to my car when the parking lot overflowed and I had to park across the street to the structure. The shopping cart wheels locked and he and I hand carried my groceries to my car. Very nice. The men working the deli and the produce sections are nice too. They are helpful and give me good advice. Once again, you get what you pay for. You want top notch quality professional service, then go to Ralphs, Pavillions, Whole Foods, Gelsons and other similar places. But then, Trader Joe's is economical and they are superbly friendly and nice. read more

I got the Sunday paper display ad and was told by a colleague they have great selection produce and meats--well I have not yet tried their products but will find out soon enough. I've been a Pasadena resident for nearly sixteen years never been into a store as crowded and busy as super king, parking was a nightmare. The store felt like the united national international supermarket. I would admit I have never ventured into market with people of all nationalities, Korean, Chinese, Latino, Arabs, Africans, Caucasians, Jews, Gypsies and Eskimos all shopping in harmony. I must have heard ten to fifteen different languages which I thought was very admirable. A wide selected of tropical and ethnic food, meat goat, lamb, beef, and various sea food, I even saw cow feet. The meat counter is very inefficient, slow ... I would admit an outdated style of buying meat.... Price relatively low and cheap on some items - overall shopping ease, parking, environment, pleasantry, food quality, pricing, I'll give them and B- at best or C at least. Will I come back here? Super King, you're my hero. Every time I stop by, I discover some new and wonderful item. That seasoning mix for yogurt dip from your spice department was fantastic last night. I love your produce- and the produce prices. $0.99 for seven limes? Nice. Four giant ears of white corn for $0.99? Yes! Your grapes are always sweet and juicy. That handle of UV Vodka (for $11.99) found a good home and was the cause of plenty of drunken antics. The birria from your hot foods section is oily, meaty goodness, and I can't wait to try your tacos (Buy 2, get one free right now!). Your selection of pita and lavash bread is huge, and even the French baguette from your bakery is excellent. Last but not least, I am now addicted to the sour gummy worms from your coffee/candy/nuts counter. $1.99/lb is best price I have ever found for those tasty little guys! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this grocery store! This place is top on my list when it comes to getting fresh veggies and fruits. They also have such a huge selection of ethnic foods that you can literally got lost looking at everything. I highly recommend this store if you are looking for an abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits, because of the volume of people coming through there everyday they don't keep anything for very long which helps with the quality of freshness. I have also purchased their meats and bought things out of the deli and have no complaints. Overall a pretty solid store. read more

This supermarket has probably the best selection of produce that I have ever seen (low prices too!!). Almost half of this large supermarket is dedicated to fresh fruits and vegetables. The other parts consists mostly of your typical supermarket foods as well as a great selection of ethnic foods (not much Asian products though). There is also a lot of pastries and bread (conchas!!). The meat is decent and they have a full service mariscos (seafood) area that contains some yummy looking ceviche that is ready made. I noticed on my way out that they also sell fresh coffee beans and they will grind for you. I loved this place. I went up to the cashier with a full cart of food and it only cost me $65 ... it's a bargain considering it would have cost me well over $100 for all that food anywhere else. I like getting some of the bottled and canned foods from the middle east importer from Glendale. Like the pickled turnips, the canned hummus, the little kit to make your own falafel etc. Outside of that, it's just a miserable experience all around. I don't care for the food or the typical customer there that you have to rub up against in the produce section. Some of these people have not showered or do not know what deodorant is. So be prepared to deal with some real a-holes that are twice your age. Nobody is smiling, they are just pushy and impolite. As for the meat offered, the prices are extremely cheap. But, I just about gagged on the steak and fajitas my wife cooked for me from this location. Also, when you peel away the plastic off of the salmon, it's never a good sign if it smells like bad fish. We've tried everything from the meat and fish department and you get what you pay for. Actually, I didn't pay for horse meat. When you cook the steak or fajita, it's like you are cooking a horse or other bad smelling meat. It's really disgusting and tastes just the same and looks funny when cooking, no matter what type of spice or sauce you use to hide it. Great for the dogs I say. On the other side, the produce is half price of Vons. The down side is the produce is half the quality. The tomatoes are bland and fuzzy, the strawberries turn green after 2 days....in other words, everything goes bad in just a couple of days or does not have the flavor or typical shelf life it should have. Cilantro goes bad overnight etc. Again, you get what you pay for but, at 9 bushels of clilantro for a buck, I can see where you might do this for a party the same day. Just stay away from the meat section. Trust me. All I can think of is that this produce must be the produce that is rejected by the big named stores and didn't meet standards. Location is sketchy at best. A billboard across the street is seeking information in a murder that happened across the street at the burger place. This is the 2nd murder at that location over the years. Also, another shooting took place a few blocks up as they had yellow taped off the street as I was driving by one evening and I called the sheriff to ask what was the police activity about. Several other shootings have happened in the area that are unsolved and are gang related. It is a sad state of affairs in this neighborhood but, if you stay close to the entrance in the lot, and you are within eyesight of the security guard, you should be ok. Fight the crowds as every pushy armenian has found out about this place. They will run you over as if you are in an airport in jerusalum. Great if you like this sort of "action". Not good if you expect good manners out of your community members. These people flat don't care at all. You know the type I'm talking about. We are sticking to respectable establishments with quality food and a quality, safe atmosphere. We throw out less food and we eat food that tastes good. read more

The meat and chicken I bought from them lasted about one day in the fridge, they both had a ridiculous odor, when i went back to talk to them about this the blew me off, as if my complaints did not matter. Second, the mailers that the send has these so called "deals" BUT everything else if way over priced...I rather go to a grocery store that is consistent in there pricing, and their meat department doesnt sell old meat, that I wouldnt even give to my dog...needless to say I will NEVER come back to this market, and I will make sure no one else I care about does either. I know that sounds pretty hash, but I rather spend the money I work so hard for at a market that actually cares that the products they sell are fresh. I'm going back to Family Grocery in Pasadena. So underrated. You can find brands at sprouts and whole foods at a fraction of the cost. High turnover on produce, you get the freshest fruit at the cheapest price. A bundle of fresh herbs for .69! Lots of specialty items imported butter or yogurts on sale. A million types of rice, a million types of oils, sugars, chocolates. I wouldn't mind but it seems as if these young people do not know how to multi task. It's quite apparent that they can not have a simple conversation and work at the same time. This market is my favorite to shop for groceries because they have really good meat and really good specials, but the reason why i give it only 2 stars is because of a lady named ROSA in the meat department. She is so rude and she just wants to give you the pieces of meat or chicken or whatever your buying thay she wants. She doesnt like the customers choosing what the customer is going to buy. I have been shopping at Super King in Altadena for several years. I must say that the quality of the produce and meat has gone downhill, not to mention the prices are higher. It would make more sense to go to Ralphs and buy quality produce and meats at the same or lower price than SK. The cashiers are constantly complaining about management. I definitely will not continue shopping at SK. read more

This place is great for its produce and the fact that has a variety of different type of ethnic food. You will find great prices on produce and that's about it, everything else is over priced. Traffic/ parking is terrible. Even inside the market it's so crowded an ur always bumping into everyone and everything. But If those aren't deal breakers would definitely recommend. read more

Awesome but don't go Fri-Sun. Prices are higher and crowds are crazy!!!!! It is amazing how cheap the produce is and how fresh it is too. I love all the ethnic foods and I could browse for hours here. They even get garbanzos fresh in their pods. Love it! read more
