We have brought our car to Pleasanton Smog & Repair 2x now. First time was to fix a smog problem, that even the auto service centers could not diagnose correctly. This place is really awful! Even their peers (other mechanics) call the people there "a$$hole"! I don't write Yelp review. My experience was so bad that I have to write a Yelp review hoping other consumers can avoid this place and go to other places so they can be treated decently! I went to this place for SMOG check because I received its coupon in the mail. They failed my SMOG check the first time. They told me that the reason was that they could not see the part number of my car's catalytic converter and the number is required to ensure the catalytic converter is the right one for my car. They also told me that the shop who replaced my catalytic converter might be a bad shop and gave me a smuggling catalytic converter that is not right for my car; hence they might want to hide the part number by installing the catalytic converter with part number on top, e.g. cannot be seen from the bottom. They told me that I need to go back to the shop that replaced my catalytic converter to get this fixed and can come back to do the SMOG check again. And they filed the SMOG report with "catalytic converter as tempered!". When I asked whether I need to pay again for the SMOG check the second time and they told me that for the coupon price ($16.75 + $8.25 for the certificate), I had to pay again! The muffler shop that replaced my car's catalytic converter is a national brand (Minute Muffler) and has great reputation, not a bad one that would ever install a smuggling catalytic converter! I went back to the shop and showed the SMOG report. They checked the catalytic converter and part number was right there and easy to be seen even though the part number was not directly facing the bottom! While at the muffler shop, I called the people who failed my SMOG check and asked why they could not see the number. Instead of explaining to me why they cannot see the number, the guy insisted that I need to fix the catalytic converter issue. The people at the muffler shop were nice and did not want to cause extra trouble for me as a customer. So they made adjustment immediately without further arguing with the guy who failed my SMOG check. When I left the muffler shop, they said sorry for my inconvenience! I went back to do the SMOG check for the second time. I observed carefully about the SMOG check process especially how they read the part number of catalytic converter. Based on my observation, there is NO WAY they could not see the part number during the first time! As the mechanics at the muffler shop said: These people are a$$holes and they want to make extra money by failing your SMOG check. They recorded the catalytic converter as tempered and if I wanted to go to another place to do the SMOG check, it would immediately triggered an alert with DMV to think why would another SMOG check station pass my car 20 minutes later with a "tempered catalytic converter"! (e.g., I need to go back and pay them again.) If you read all the review, this is NOT the first time people complain about the place's practice. One review dated 1/27/2015 says they knew the car's "check engine light" was ON, which means it will definitely fail the SMOG check, but still run the SMOG check and charged the customer who was really pissed! I tried to talk to the manager and asked them why why they could not see the part number and described the situation as if the muffler shop (or even me) tried to hide something and did something really bad. I was hoping they could stop the practice and improve customer experience. Wow, what a mistake I made! How can you reasoning with people whose peers even call them "a$$holes"! At the end, the manager yelled at me "Get out! Get Out! Get Out!", 3 times! For all consumers out there, please use your own judgement! Do you like to be fooled by the cheap coupon price and be yelled at "Get Out" 3 times from people even their peers call them a$$holes?! read more

This place is great. I was about to get a smog done at a different place with a coupon, but when I arrived there, they said that they wouldn't take the coupon because my car was a minivan and not a small compact car. So the $40 smog check was now going to be an $80 smog check. Luckily I found a coupon from Pleasanton Smog and Repair. I called them and told them I had a coupon, and asked if this applied to minivans as well. The lady on the phone said yes. So the total was going to be $25 with the certificate. I left my car there for a couple of hours and when I came back, it was all done and ready to go. Just like she said, it was only $25. I even brought in a 'dealer' recommend list and they tore it shreds by explaining the difference between 'manufactures' recommended list vs. the 'dealers.' Well done! I learned of the shop through a mailer. It was a deal. Both cars needed a smog and one needed an oil change so in we go. I gotta say they're really nice as I walked up (of course I have the look of not knowing what I'm doing cause I didn't) and the mechanic was nice to greet me then direct me to where to check-in. Then the front desk woman was nice to check me in, etc They were true to form on their estimate wait and called or texted me when the cars were ready. I appreciate the inspection report they gave and estimated costs on repairs (one of my cars is 23+ yrs). And if you want a spot to hang out and wait, just go up the block from the back street as there are places to sit at the top of the corner - left and right. The bagel across the st is nice too (forgot to eat one day). It seems odd to write, but it is so true that's it's nice to go to a car shop who's friendly, professional, no pressure with dire gloom on my car's destruction (yes I've had that) and well taken care of. read more

Tried them for a smog check and the excellent price - $25 including certificate. While I had no appointment the wait was reasonable - 30 minutes - which I used to observe the business and customers. They appear to have a loyal following of repeat customers --- mainly smog and oil changes - and they do provide all levels of service. Not in need of a regular mechanic right now, but I'll keep them in mind for any future needs. read more

We had an Engine Valve Cover Gasket replacement but it still leaked oil. I had service done at Toyota after and they said again that the engine was still leaking oil here and the engine valve cover needed to be replaced. I brought it again like 6 months later and asked if they could look at it but they said it would be full price again. read more

The shop is well maintained. Sometimes these shops look like a tv show called "hoarders". But this one is not cluttered up and dirty like others I've seen. They take pride in their waiting area. It's clean and comfortable. There was a bit of a line but they offer a great discount from a coupon for smog. It's close to downtown Pleasanton so it's in a nice area to grab a coffee while u wait. The receptionist was very friendly and took care of me with a smile. I've been to a few shops around and sometimes they can be almost irritated u came in for service. Not at this spot. Stand up guys, after calling the Smog place I went to a couple years ago & getting the run around about them wanting to charge me another $8+ bucks more for some STAR certification crap which was no different than the last time I was there I came here. I called this place up that had a great flyer for $25 cash smog out the door price which included the State certificate & I got my car smogged in about 15 minutes. So I make an appointment for an oil change in the morning for 4 pm the same day. I tell them my make, model, name and number. I leave work early so I can make it on time and when I show up, they tell me they don't have a filter and can't do my oil change. Since I didn't make the appointment the day before, they didn't have a chance to order one. SERIOUSLY?? Why couldn't they tell me this when I made the appointment or during the 6 or so hours leading up to my appointment?? Am I supposed to ask if they have all the materials necessary to do the work?? To top it off, they didn't even order my filter THAT day so they couldn't even get it for a couple days. Ok, I get it. Businesses make mistakes and it was just a mistake. But how about a better response than just - so sorry, we can reschedule you. Had they acknowledged their screw up and offered to make it right, especially because I left work early to get there, I would have been much more understanding. But unfortunately they didn't. I went initially for a smog and they told me my car didn't pass the "visible test" (i.e. smoke coming from my exhaust). My car is regularly maintained, there is absolutely no smoke from my exhaust, so I spoke to my trusted mechanic who told me to run my car and warm it up and go get it retested (which was an additional charge). I did as I was instructed, car passed smog just as I knew it would, but Pleasanton's Smog & Repair was just trying to hustle me out of $133 charge to pretty much do the same damn thing. I told them I hardly drive my car on the freeway so they should have given me the same advice. I will never go back here again, nor would I recommend it. read more

I came in for an oil change and was informed that the service indicator in my car (for an oil change) can't be reset because it required a coolant change for about $125. I took my car to my trusted auto technician to double-check. He said that I didn't need to change my coolant, topped it off for free, and turned off the indicator. Offering discounts so that you can bring in business, then try to upsell is a common and understandable business tactic. However, for me trust in any auto servicing business is important to me. Misleading customers to gain unwarranted business isn't acceptable. read more

I was surprised the other day however that they've joined "The Others" in charging more for SUV,s, etc. I always thought that it spoke well of their character not adding on an un-necessary charge ... nothing is different in the test than in smaller vehicles so why do these places add a fee???? These days, it's nearly impossible to find a place where you can just get your oil changed - period. Way too many upselling and schemes to repair/replace things that don't need them. So it was a pleasant experience to go to Pleasanton Smog and Repair today to get an oil change, and that was it. I called ahead for an appointment, they volunteered that they had a $19.99 coupon right now for a regular 5 qt oil change ($23 out the door after tax), and the people there were refreshingly welcoming. Even the mechanic says hi to you. I've found my easy oil change place now. One caveat - they only take cash/check for now, but will be setup for credit card processing soon. I hand over the keys and the DMV paper work and head inside to the waiting lobby, where I find one of the most comfortable couches I have ever sat on, a 50" Plasma hanging on the wall and fair selection of magazines presented for my reading enjoyment. Approximately 10 minutes later, the owner comes into the lobby, tells me the car passed and I am good to go. He quickly writes up the bill and its $34! (average is close to $75 for the area). I could not have asked for a better experience and highly recommend Pleasanton Smog to anyone who looking to get a SMOG done in quick, timely and professional manner. read more

Let me explain my 3-star rating. I have no problem with their service as they did my SMOG quickly and smoothly. I was in and out of there in maybe 30 minutes tops. Polite staff too. Maybe the price is different for high end cars but I read in the reviews the smog was $25 and somehow I got charged $56. I even brought cash after I read they only take cash/debit. Luckily they took my CC since I was not expecting it to be so much. In hindsight I should have asked for the cost first but I didn't want to make a big complaint about it so I just paid and left. read more

Once again, Jake and his crew came through for me!!! Was not sure what was wrong with my 2000 BMW, thought it was the battery. Took it to the BMW dealer on 12/9/13 and they told me the battery, although old, was in "OK" condition, at some point I would need to replace it- a new one would cost approx. $500.00. This morning, 12/10/13, my car would not start again, for the 3rd time- I took it straight to Pleasanton Smog and Repair at 8:00am, by 9:30am I had a call from Jake confirming that it was the battery and that a new one would be approx. $252.00. This is not the first time I have gone to Jake and it won't be the last- it's the only garage that I want working on my car. Helpful, Friendly and Quick! Do to crazy wedding planning i have slacked off on getting my car smogged for registration. I went here on my lunch and was in and out in 20 minutes. I would also like to add the Pleasanton Smog was much cheaper than the place I usually go to across town. the gentleman that helped me was very nice. They offer a comfy place to sit with plenty of magazines to flip through while waiting. But as I said before I was not there very long. I have found a new place to get my car smogged! After being rudely treated at a competitor smog shop, I called this place to see if they accept non-local coupons. The lady that answered the phone was very friendly and said that they do. When I come in, the same lady warmly greets me and accepts my coupon without any issue. The normal cost OTD for the smog was only $35 but I happened to have a coupon that made the cost only $28. I was in and out within 20 minutes. They have a comfortable waiting area where I had my lunch. They also have a clean bathroom to use. I highly recommend them for great service and great prices. The standard rate book for the 50K service on my car is 1.8 hours. After looking at my car and my service records, Jake felt that was excessive and estimated just 1 hour. He ended up charging me for only 30 minutes of work! Plus, he did a simple experiment that showed my problem with filling up was related to where I was getting gas, rather than the car itself. This was something the previous shop I took the car to for this problem should have done. Jake says he's trying to "unscrew" people who've been screwed by excessive dealer service charges. So much more than a smog test. I went to this place after seeing the reviews on Yelp and hoped that the service lived up to the reviews. What I found was like a little hidden treasure tucked away at an unassuming location. Honesty, friendliness, professionalism. I was quoted $450 + tax by Honda for an issue with my car but after showing Jake the car he informed me that it was just the oil pressure that would cost $28 to fix. I was not sold anything I didn't need or manipulated in to spending more than I should have. This is a true family business with excellent service performed by professionally trained technicians. I stopped by today to get a smog check. I was asked about how I heard about them and said that I had been there before to get my car smog checked. I said that I had a coupon and was told that they are under new management and will not honor any coupons. He then told me that it would be "$78 out the door" to get a smog check as if he was giving me a deal. The coupon was for $19.95 - a big difference from $78. I'm not sure if he was being honest with the change of ownership or if he just didn't feel like doing the smog check. If he was lying, then hopefully the owner will know what type of employee he has working for him. If he was telling the truth, then this is a bad way to start a new business!! read more

Came in for an oil change. Made an appointment, arrived on time and before I knew it my car was up on the jacks. I really appreciate that my appointment time was honored and I wasn't pushed back due to some other happenings at the shop. Total time was under 30 minutes and I was good to go. They noticed one issue with my car (which I already knew) and gave an estimate if I wanted them to fix it. No upselling/pressure/etc. Price was right (under $30 out the door), service was prompt, workers all were friendly. I'll go back and suggest others do the same. PS. Pleasanton smog was super efficient, reasonably priced, and it's so close to downtown you could enjoy a stroll to Oasis or The Pleasanton Brewery while you wait.
