I then had him install a new Apple car play in my daughters car and after comparing other quotes was right there with the others. Came in on sunday around 430pm and let Richard know i wanted a new single din radio and new speakers all around since my car radio wasnt working and i didnt know the condition of the speakers on a 94 ford explorer. Hooked me up with a new kenwood head unit along with some rad rockford fosgate speakers. As he was doing his install, speakers went on nicely without any issues, he wired up the head unit harness in a breeze. After plugging everything up he did his testing and found that the 2 front doors werent playing. It was around 620pm now at this point and he asked if i can either come back another day or leave the car with him, i could have done either one but told him i wont be free for another 2-3 weeks. He then started taking out the kick panels, checking the wiring harness and found out that 2 wires on both sides were cut since the previous owner did their weird wiring to add some tweeters that dont work anyway. He solved the hiccup and got all 4 speakers to play. I probably didnt leave until close to 745pm after all the troubleshooting he did for me but totally worth the wait Overall im more than satisfied with my new purchase and im very thankful for Richard for going above and beyond to get me all set up. I took my father's mid 2000's suv in for a radio upgrade and we were not disappointed with the quality of service. Some people may be taken back by the lack of glitz and glamor of the place but Rich's shop reminded me of an auto shop from the 80's where the staff know the store like the back of their hands. They had the job done within a reasonable amount of time/price and had it working like it was the original factory radio. I saw an ad on craigslist for stereo and backup camera install for $300 so called and to see if it was legit, Rich texted me back and told me yes and gave me the pioneer stereo model which was a 2018 model. I also had 2 Kenwood 6 1/2 inch speakers installed on the rear doors. I met him at surf city stereo around 1pm and it was a lot longer to install didn't get out of there until almost 6pm. Just be aware that the craigslist ads they post doesn't include tax and install parts or kits that you may need to fit your stereo onto your car. Which will raise the price significantly. I was a bit hesitant about coming here since the reviews weren't exactly impressive but no one who reviewed here said anything bad about the installation itself. The lady who was watching the store was kind and very nice. Yes, it didn't seem like she knew a lot about the prices for the items they have for sale but she called Rich and got the prices. It wasn't a big deal. I believe Rich will work with you on the price a little if you pay cash and what you're looking for. Just call or text him and get specifics or exactly what you're looking for. Make sure you get the out the door price with tax and any install parts that may be needed otherwise you might be shocked. I initially gave this place a 5 stars but, I was a bit annoyed that one feature of the install of the stereo which was being able to switch on the backup camera without having to put it in reverse was not installed, it was just an extra wire. When I contacted him, he told me it'll be another $25-30 max it should have been installed in the first place, fast forward to the day that I took the car in again for the feature. After he was done he says $40 now after he texted me back $25 to $30 max. Just not cool. It really is true sometimes you get what you pay for, I saw an ad that looked too good to be true on craigslist and called and confirm then tax and install parts were added when I arrived and the price went way up which wasn't disclosed until I got there, I had driven a ways, I don't live anywhere near Huntington beach. In the end, I really didn't save any money at all. I could have gone to any other shop near me and got the same or better backup camera and left within a couple of hours instead of 5 hours. The way I see it is to compare the out the door prices from other places before committing. Nothing wrong with his installation work but the prices wasn't all that after all said and done. **I would rate this place ZERO stars if I had the option - Should call the Better Business Bureau** Needed an aftermarket stereo radio receiver replacement wire harness for my car stereo. The lady brought it out just by itself and said it was the name brand version. We went to purchase it for $30 ($5.99 on Amazon) with a card and the lady says, "I may have to charge an extra $5 for a card transaction, but let me find out." She comes back, gives the phone to my father and my father said, "we'll just come back with cash," and they immediately dropped the $5 fee. What merchants these days still charge a card fee? I know some places have a $10 minimum, but we were ripped off paying $30 for a $6 product! I'm a small business owner and I have a card reader so I have first-hand knowledge of how much a credit/debit transaction cost. For me, it's 2.1% + 20 cents per transaction (or 3% using American Express). This shop took our transaction from a Square card reader. Square's transaction fees are 2.5% for swiped transactions and 3.5% + $0.15 for manually entered transactions. 2.5 % OF $30.00 IS $0.75..... 75 CENTS! STAY AWAY Took in my friends car to get the sub checked out expecting a quick fix .. thinking maybe the settings on the radio would need to be changed to get it working again, but no. Turns out the speaker was burnt out after this WHALE asked ME to move the speaker from the trunk to his work table which was actually a trash bin.. and had the nerve to ask for $40 after unscrewing 8 screws in 30 seconds with his electric screw driver just to tell us that the speaker was no good??? Should he had mentioned the "labor" he swore was so much work was going to cost $40 I would've went else where. THEN gave attitude after we only had 20 bucks on us. Worst place you would ever go to. Horrible customer service. The "warranty" he will mention only means that if something brakes he will try to make you pay for it until you mention warranty. During the day it is run by his family or whoever he can find to do the job, whoever is there does not know anything about the products and they call the owner to have you talk on the phone to him. I needed him to come in and bring me an amp and he said he would be there in 20 minuets and I figured I would grab something to eat and be rite back and it wasn't until two hours later he showed up and he told me I shouldn't have waited! I will NEVER go back to surf city auto sound and will never recommend this shop to anyone!!! read more
