TLDR: Our project took 17 weeks to complete (despite an original estimate of 10 total business days). There were multiple long delays, the quality of work was inconsistent, and their team's negligence caused damage to our master bathroom countertop. Background and Timeline We paid $22k+ in labor cost to Owen's team to remodel our master bathroom shower into a steam shower with small format tile. We also requested that this work be permitted. Work began in mid-August 2024 and final inspection passed mid-December 2024. Day 1+2. Prep and demo Day 7-14. Plumbing rough In Day 16. Electrical Day 18-30. Waterproofing Day 31-45. Tile Day 45. Glass measurements, then delivery and installation 14 days later Day 52-60. Plumbing trim Day 75. Final inspection failed Day 76-97. Plumbing corrections, waiting for faulty valve replacement to arrive Day 97. Final inspection failed again Day 97 - 105. Additional plumbing corrections Day 104 - 115. Plumber left cut drywall open due to sub scheduling Day 111. Final inspection passed Day 115. Drywall repaired, but left an uneven 6' seam Day 120. Drywall repaired again and project complete We had to reach out to Owen frequently for updates, as he did not usually provide these without us asking for them. Countertop Damage Owen's team did not place any surface protection on our nearby bathroom countertop. (Owen later claimed that we explicitly told him to not protect our countertop, to have easier access to our bathroom cabinets. This is a lie since they did actually place protection over the cabinets themselves, which is what actually limited access). On day 21, after seeing that his team had been placing and dragging multiple metal objects, tools, and boxes on the unprotected countertop, we looked underneath the dust and saw that there were several superficial scratches, in multiple areas. Owen expressed disbelief that his team caused the damage, repeating multiple times that "quartz countertops cannot scratch like this". He later agreed to attempt to remedy the scratches himself with a polishing kit, which was unsuccessful. Several weeks later he offered to have his "solid surface guy" come by to fix the scratches, but he was unable to provide a single review or reference for this person. At this time Owen also implied that we were trying to use the scratched countertop as leverage for a discount on our remaining balance. We then chose to not have Owen's "solid surface guy" attempt a repair (as we had concern that he may damage the countertop further), and opted to pay $900 ourselves, to have another company remove the scratches. (Our chosen tile refinishing company had restored the same countertop surface earlier this year, prior to it being damaged by Owen's team). Team Owen fired one of his younger team members in the first month of the project, as he was disappointed that he wasn't properly cleaning up in the early days of the project. This was later surprising to us, as Owen's other team members frequently left behind debris and dust after completing each step of our project. We personally had to take a utility knife and scrape off splattered grout on the floor around the shower. (Not terribly important, but wanted to note it.) We had two tile installers who performed the work inconsistently. Owen later remarked that these guys were struggling with similar quality issues on other client sites. Owen's plumber was especially unreliable. On multiple days he left mid-visit and did not return, often without explanation to us. Grout Color Variation Our finished project had inconsistent grout coloring, after having multiple corrections performed (after chipped tiles were replaced, per our request, and select tiles were moved to get consistent grout lines). Owen noted that our contract states that grout color consistency is not guaranteed. To make this less noticeable, we personally bought 2 different types of sealant (one a grout-darkening sealant, to place on the lighter areas) and sealed the entire shower ourselves. Conclusion At a glance, our finished steam shower looks high quality, and we are enjoying using it. However, if you look closer, it is clear that the work is somewhat inconsistent and the grout color still does not match fully, despite our own resealing attempts. Overall we are not unhappy with the finished project, but we were frustrated by the 17 week project duration and were especially disappointed with Owen's reaction when we requested repairs for the damaged countertop. read more

This review has been a long time coming! We had our bathrooms remodeled by Owen & his crew back in January. Communication was a huge deal for us & they delivered (we had a newborn, 2 dogs and planning a wedding - YES, we were a bit crazy for starting a remodel). Owen & Izzy we're in constant communication with us and we never had to question anything. We relayed our vision to them, they came up with some additional ideas and THEY DELIVERED. A lot of times you end up with a flaky contractor that just wants to move on to the next project. Not them. They were great from the start to the finish. I haven't even mentioned their work yet. Demo was quick, AND CLEAN. I was a little nervous about the potential dust situation since we had a new baby. They blocked off all entrances really well and cleaned up after themselves daily. Everything ultimately turned out PERFECT. There were a few issues that were out of their control that popped up: 1.) we had to move the toilet back & 2.) the subfloor upstairs had termite damage & needed to be replaced. They had these things taken care of quickly without having our timeline pushed back. Through out the project, Owen checked in and made sure we were pleased with how everything was looking, how is crew was doing and if there was anything else they could be doing better. I chose Surf City as they were more than willing to do the project. Owen and his crew were very friendly and amazingly efficient. The job was done over two days. We contacted 4 other tile installers and a few didn't reply (maybe too busy or too small of a job). Two of the bids were quite high and Surf City's was reasonable. I can tell the quality of the work is very professional. The edging is nicely bent on the corners rather than mitered which is a nice touch. Owen and his crew is everything I want in a contractor: top quality workmanship, great communication, he is a knowledgeable problem solver, and I had no worries about this job getting done correctly and on time. The tile backsplash on my kitchen remodel had to be aligned perfectly. I wanted a modern, linear tile which had no room for error. It involved the tiniest of grout lines and backpainted glass, which can be tricky to cut and we had a lot of outlets to cut around. We were matched with Surf City Tile! Their Surf City Tile van was at my house the next morning, and work started and continued 8-hours a day weekdays until my porcelain tile, wood-look floor with black epoxy grout was finished. The owner stopped by daily to walk the project and talk about the next day's scope of work while listening and responding to my questions. Their employee, Axel, was on time every day, worked nonstop until his lunch break, and returned to installing my floor every day with an unbelievable work ethic! Axel has excellent tiling skills. Axel kept and left the work areas clean daily. Axel was very respectful of our home, our pets, and us.
