We are snow bit do & hoped we had found a little place overlooking the beach for breakfast or a light, quick lunch. Don't waste your time. Our first visit we were one or about 4 tables of 2 people. No one at door to seat us. After 5 min we asked a passing waitress & she said sit anywhere. Mistake one. No one ever came to wait on us so had to ask for menus & service. Ordered scrambled eggs, sausage & hash browns. Everything was over cooked! The hash browns are frozen diced potatoes from the deep fryer - no taste. No refills on drinks & 30 min after we finished eating we found someone to ask for a check. Ok, so maybe breakfast isn't there thing. Went back a week later to give it a shot for early lunch. After being seated as the only people in the world place, we listened to two servers chat at the bar for over 20 min with no drinks, we finally called over & asked for our order to be taken. We still waited 20 min for BLTs and fries. The food arrived, but no drinks. We reminded our server about our drinks which she promptly brought. The bacon was almost missing from the BLT & burnt (tastes like they deep fry it for too long) & the fries under-done. Makes me wonder what were they doing for 20 min in the kitchen. Our take away from our visits here is they remain in business because they are convenient. Don't expect a refill on your drinks, don't expect quick service, don't expect food that tastes very good. We came here as a party of 9 with kids. We had burgers, fried dishes, and a club. The order took an hour to hit the table. The kids were so hungry we just told the server to bring the dishes as they came up. Of course that meant some were done before others received their food. The service was good and we sympathized with her since the kitchen was out of her control. It was frustrating that no manager tried to address or even acknowledge the amount of time it took to get our entire meal. Honestly nothing was so impressive as to bring us back again. We have been in Surfside for 15 years and have experienced every restaurant in the area. I'm always amazed to see the difference in attitude during the winter months when the restaurants have to rely on "locals" to support them versus summertime when business is booming and the waitstaff could care a less about repeat customers. Today was one of those days at Surf Diner. We got up early to have coffee on the beach and watch the sunrise. After our coffee we decided to run down to Surf Diner or another restaurant for breakfast. When we arrived at the pier we realized that Surf Diner didn't open until 7:30. We debated on weather to stay and wait until they open or go somewhere else because the last time we ate here the food wasn't very good, wait was long and we felt it was over priced. Because we were already there we decided to take in the views and wait 40 minutes until they opened. At 7:30 there was a crowd at the door to get in and fortunately we were there early to get a great spot on the deck. As the other guests were seated we noticed that every table was waited on immediately and served coffee. We waited patiently thinking someone would be over soon. When we noticed that everyone was seated and already drinking coffee the waitresses were now taking food orders so I tried to waive a waitress down several times but seemed to be ignored when I know that they saw me. Hmmmm, what the heck? So we decided that this was our last time to step foot in the Surf Diner! It's unfortunate since is so close to our home but enough is enough! When I got up to leave we were still ignored by the waitstaff so I went inside to tell the woman who seated us that we were leaving and why. Her only response was "sorry"! When I walked outside to head down to the beach I thanked the waitress who ignored us several times and then heard another waitress say that "I'll be happy to serve you now". All I could do is laugh. Hey, if you want a place with a great view of the ocean that serves mediocre food that's overpriced this place is where you should go... Otherwise, try one of the other great restaurants along the beach! read more

Would rate 3.5 stars if that was an option. The chipped beef was good but my husband thought his western omelette was ok, a little on greasy side since they butter their bagels. I'd give it a 6th star if I could. Our trio stopped by today for a very late lunch, early dinner having eaten at this location when it was Nibbles. Will introduced himself as our waiter and bartender which worked out just fine. He then helped to steer us through our choices with the deft touch of a head chef, leading two of us to order tacos, one boom boom shrimp and one fish. We shared! Our third entree was the crab melt. I have never had a shrimp taco let alone a fish one, wow! The boom boom shrimp were quick fried and the cook was perfect along with just the right amount of texture and the smallest amount of a heat finish. Tasty! The fish taco had no specific sauce so I asked Will which was the "normal" and he quickly retrieved what he call the Surf Sauce... a mayo/ketchup combo with a touch of cayenne which was perfect for the fish. Now after two tacos Will asked if we wanted to add another and it was a resounding yes for two more boom boom shrimp tacos! Not to be outdone our third was busy working on what she called the best crab sandwich she'd ever had. The crab comes without peppers, which for all of us is the only way to eat crab. Dessert consisted of one Mudslide mixed and decorated to perfection. Will helped make what amounted to extraordinary meal that much better with his ease and personality. We truly had a fantastic experience and plan on stopping by again tomorrow to expand our plates with more of this great little restaurant. read more

Nice place overlooking the pier and ocean. Was seated by the hostess. Waitress was over in a flash. Breakfast menu is varied and adequate. I had a biscuit with sausage and white gravy. Two eggs on top. Food came out quickly and was delicious. Some restaurants gravy is bland but this was seasoned correctly. Will definitely return. read more

Ate here for breakfast this morning. In and out pretty quickly and the service was good. Have ate out on the deck in the past and it's always a nice treat! Be sure to order the grits! They are AMAZING! I had the pancakes this morning & they did not disappoint! Husband had the French toast and he loved it! Only thing keeping it from a 5 star review is the place is pretty packed & tight inside (hence why we like sitting outside!) and I wanted to make an easy change to my order (add pecans to the pancakes) literally 1 minute after I placed order and waitress said it was too late. After working in the restaurant industry for 10 years, I'd never say that to one of my guests, especially if it would add $$ to their bill. But oh well!! Didn't bother me that much since pancakes were fine without too! Waitress was nice about it afterward, I just thought it was a little odd! read more

Had breakfast here. Typical breakfast fare for reasonable price. Large portions. Bloody Mary is good and not to spicy. Reason for 5 star is for the staff and view. We couldn't ask for a more welcoming staff. The diner sits right on the beach.....great for people /bird watching. Give this place a try. We had breakfast here this past Saturday and wish we would have chosen another place. The location is great as its on the pier and you have great views, but that's it for good things to say. Al of the waitresses seemed overwhelmed even though there were empty tables and not very busy. I ordered a bloody mary that had a sweet tomato flavor and was much more juice than vodka in it. Ordered the Cakes and Eggs which were two large pancakes and t eggs. My eggs were sunny side up, but were so under cooked and runny they grossed me out and could not eat them. Pancakes tasted liked can spray butter as it was most likely used on the griddle. Should have used fresh butter to cook them. My husband ordered the Southern Benedict which was english muffins topped with sausage and poached egg then southern gravy on top. Instead of putting a little gravy on top as you do in benedicts, the gravy was ladeled on top so all you saw was gravy. Looked terrible and unsatisfying. The bill was close to $40 as we also had a child's meal for our son. Go someplace else and just go back to walk on pier. read more

Arrived on Saturday 07/22/2017 around 7pm found parking right away inside the restaurant was a little busy but on the deck had a lot of seating and since it had been a very warm evening the breeze felt great we chose to sit on the deck celebrating my husband's birthday we ordered our drinks and our food all at the same time drinks arrived except for 1 strawberry daiquiri we waited and waited finally I stood up and asked the busboy if he could advise the waitress that we did not get this drink after 20 or so minutes it was brought to the table and said it was on the house. Ok great, so now we are watching the ocean watching people around us get their food and still no food we are asking for refills on out water and tea and getting it from everyone walking around the deck area. I get up and ask what is going on with our food and we are told your food is coming we are busy. OK great we wait and wait now 30 min I proceed once again to get up and look for the manager who advises your ticket is next REALLY? We have 8 empty cups of water and tea 3 mixed drinks that was terrible no food we had to request that some of the glasses be removed because there was no more room for the glasses to fit and we have watched numerous of tables with people eat and leave who arrived at the same time and then after us get their food before us and our food is still coming with only 4 plates. What is going on we finally get our food and told the Birthday boy (Husband) dinner is on the house REALLY? We all only eat 1/2 of our food why it is OK we have eaten here before and it was better WHAT Happened? Terrible service and 1 free dinner because they cannot control their staff?? Food is just mediocre and they were not so busy that there was an excuse for this type of service. Surf Diner Management and or Owners need to FIRE whoever they have managing their restaurant if it is them then they get a big fat F- for Service all around. I would have walked out but because my Father in-law was treating his son to what he thought was a nice dinner we stayed for his sake total bill $88.10 and did not leave until almost 10 pm I wanted to pull my hair out!!! Worse service around in the area OK Food Poor Service! We should have stayed bought fish from Herrelson's Seafood Market and had a better meal and experience! I have eaten here on many occasions and have never been disappointed with the food or the service. The last time I ate there was 7/29/13. I find my sunnyside up eggs always cooked right and I asked for the home fries to be well done, which they always are. I sat outside for the first time, looking at the beach and taking a picture of a parasailer. I recommend this place highly for their friendly staff, excellent service and great food. read more

We had guests staying at a nearby resort and, even though I have lived in the area for over 14 years, I have never ate at this restaurant. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly staff and were seated quickly. We were there for breakfast and it was a wonderful day so we are outside on the pier. The breakfast food was fantastic and everyone was very satisfied. If it's a nice day in Surfside Beach and want to enjoy great food with an amazing view, give this place a try. read more

After Nibils left, we missed being able to eat overlooking the beach. That spot has been filled in a great way by The Surf Diner! The food is excellent, the atmosphere is pleasant and the staff is friendly!! We went for breakfast one day and went back for dinner the next. We were pleasantly surprised by how good everything is! While on vacation, I walked down the beach to eat here a few times. The helpings of food were ginormous and well worth the money. When you check in, you even get a nice little discount! The drinks were a little high, but it's worth paying for when you get such a lovely view of the beach. I came and read on the patio for a while and munched on their nachos.
