In my opinion this Surf, which used to be my most favorite place to come for lunch, specifically, for the black bean soup (only served in the winter months) and the Chicken Fajita (which is now priced up to $13.), has not only gone WOKE (go woke go broke) but has gone so down hill in the recipe of the Chicken Fajita, that the CF that I was served last time I was there, was not only UTTERLY DISGUSTING but was totally UNEDIBLE!! If I could give this Surf less than a 0 rating I would. Last time the same thing happened. Whoever decided to change the recipe and the way a normal CF is served (sliced grilled chicken strips with the peppers and onions on the side) and decided to combine all of the ingredients and slop them in a stupid bowl should really be fired!! That was a very dump move on ST and me and my family of six will never come again for dinner or lunch again especially the way the manager or whoever the gal in charge was that day treated me!! I asked if she could make it the old way, like I did last time, she did last time, but this time she just lied to my face and said/gave me the impression she would accommodate me. When I received the CF it was so gross and disgusting all mixed up in a crappy bowl I almost felt like she spit in it. I got a very bad feeling about it, I took one bite of the awful CF and spit it out and then gave it back to the server and told him to tell the manager "gee thanks for accommodating me I don't want my money back but I am never come here again and this was terrible and it sucked and thanks for being such a snotty brat about it!!" Fun and busy little place, good tacos, a bit light in the fillings but good. I enjoyed the Surf Taco, my daughter enjoyed her soft beef & cheese taco, and my dog enjoyed eating all the dropped tortilla chips under our table. When we got there I sat down outside with the dog while the husband and the kid went in to order. The dog had a field day, haha. This is my favorite place in Red Bank for quick meals that won't break the Bank.. the choices are vast and there is always tables available.. it's a family place to eat and I eat here at least once month.. I don't know much about cooking, but I do know that when you brown ground beef, you're supposed to drain the juices. Surf Taco didn't get the memo. Greasy beef juice leaked out of my taco with every bite. It didn't even taste like the beef had been seasoned. Easily the grossest taco I have ever eaten. I gave two stars because the queso is good (even though it's ridiculous that it costs $4 for a small cup of it and it doesn't even come with extra chips). People who know me might be surprised that I'd give Surf Taco a 4/5, but I've been eating at its various locations for about 10 years now, and I generally always have a good meal because I've learned what to avoid. Avoid: almost everything on the menu, it's pretty mediocre. Exceptions below. Surf Taco: When their Surf Taco game is on, it's probably the best fish taco I've ever had, and I've had enough to make the argument that I'm more fish than man. When they're off their game, it's a soggy lump of battered cod with way too much slaw. Quesadilla: Get a chicken and cheese quesadilla WITH onions, peppers and sour cream. The last three ingredients are critical, otherwise it's just your average suburban mom's 'dilla. Buffalo Soldier: A burrito with buffalo sauce covered popcorn chicken. You can't go wrong. Jenks burrito: Chicken, rice, peppers, onions, lettuce tomato and sour cream. It's like the Maverick but good. It's great for lunch, a quick weeknight dinner, or an after beach snack (sometimes that surf taco calls my name). Kids/teenagers love the food and it's very family friendly while still having a somewhat cool/surf atmosphere. Try to hit the reccomendations above and you'll come away with a good opinion of the place. read more

This spot is always on our list after a visit to the beach with some friends. This particular location is relatively in the center of Red Bank which means it gets packed especially during the summer days. I like their fish tacos and their maverick burrito. By far this restaurant's feature I like is the service they provide by going around and checking on all the tables for feedback. I have been here twice now in 3 weeks. Great food at decent prices. My wife is hooked on the Maverick Chicken Burrito. It is $7.95 and comes with chips. I had the pleasure of enjoying a steak quesadilla, which was incredible and LOADED with steak and pico. I chose the combo #1 for my second go around. This consisted of 2 soft or hard beef tacos, chips, and a drink for around $7. The tacos were decent, but lacked seasoning and that pop of flavor. We were nervous on seating because the place was packed, but my wife scooped one up after stalking customers, lol. Customer service was decent and atmosphere is artistic and positive. It's like our order spontaneously disappeared or something; they completely forgot our food until we had to remind them that we ordered and paid for it already. First, if I use a credit card, please don't tell me that you can't give me a copy of the receipt. WHAT?!?!?! There should be more than a merchant copy! Had the California burrito here. Very well Prepared great tasting burrito. Both filling and satiating for sure. Salas are nice and taste fresh. One complaint is the tortilla chips they provide are super greasy and not very appealing to me. My husband was raving about this place, so we visited on our latest trip down the shore. The menu was extensive for a taco spot, the line was very long and there was ONE cashier. The ground beef taco was horrible, I didnt eat after first bite; pork was good and chips were good, but overall this food was completely lacking flavor. I LOVE cilantro and there was plenty of cilantro on all the tacos, however it had zero flavor. Contrary to norm, I did not read any reviews prior to dining. It was interesting that other Yelpers had the same comment about the blah tacos as we experienced. This was my first time eating at a Surf Taco. Went to Red Bank for the day and stopped in for lunch. We arrived just before noon and it was a good thing we did. About 20 minutes after arriving a ton of school kids rolled in and the place became busy. When we first walked in, the ambiance was inviting. Lighting was a bit dim. Definitely had the beachy/surf vibe. I could almost see myself being at the shore except, it was SO cold. Immediately when I walked in, I was freezing. We couldn't even eat inside because of this reason. They had outdoor seating available so we chose that option. There were about 5 girls up front. One at the register, and four others at the pick up counter. Couldn't tell who worked there and who didn't. Maybe they all did. No clue. Looked like they were just hanging out. Which, if that's allowed, awesome, but not one looked up ever to say hello. Not that that offends me, but come on, ladies. This is your job. Grabbed a menu, since I've never been here before, but there is a huge menu above the register as well. I ordered the garlic shrimp burrito. While it was tasty, there is no possible way the shrimp had any garlic on it. Or any spice at all. The shrimp was not seasoned. I'm convinced of that. With the other flavors inside the burrito, especially the white cilantro sauce, it worked, but I tasted no hint of garlic at all. I was extremely disappointed to see that Surf Taco changed its menu. They had a Hawaiian Salad that was so full of flavor. They made a change and now it is the most bland salad ever. They replaced the tasty balsamic with a flavorless avocado lime dressing. The cheese that replaced the bleu cheese has no flavor. The teriyaki seemed watered down. Just a horrible experience. I had maybe 7 of the smallest pineapple pieces (can't called them chunks. They were tiny). It's now more of a Mexican salad than Hawaiian. And then the menu showed add mango salsa for 50 cents more but the register automatically put it as 75 cents. When I pointed it out the girl at the counter said she couldn't change it and went in the back to ask. She came out and said can't do it. So I asked for the manager to come out and I personally had to explain it to her. She put it in as a "substitution" for 50 cents . Didn't even have the ability to override the sale. I love surf taco! But, for some reason this surf taco is not as good as the one in long branch. For starters, the food at this location def. does not seem to be as well prepared as the long branch location. I absolutely hate the cafeteria vibe of the locale itself. The long branch location is much more relaxed and "surf' like. This location is just this big open room. I am sure the recipes are the same at both locations, but the cooks are def. not preparing the food as good as the other locations. I've been to a few Surf Tacos at other locations and wasnt too impressed. This location is amazingly clean, the staff is friendly and the food is fantastic. The queso and salsa bar was THE BEST. Delicious salsas, not chunky at all and very flavorful. The only negative I can think of is I wish there was a larger selection of toppings you can include in your meal.
