I was extremely disappointed to see that Surf Taco changed its menu. They had a Hawaiian Salad that was so full of flavor. They made a change and now it is the most bland salad ever. They replaced the tasty balsamic with a flavorless avocado lime dressing. The cheese that replaced the bleu cheese has no flavor. The teriyaki seemed watered down. Just a horrible experience. I had maybe 7 of the smallest pineapple pieces (can't called them chunks. They were tiny). It's now more of a Mexican salad than Hawaiian. And then the menu showed add mango salsa for 50 cents more but the register automatically put it as 75 cents. When I pointed it out the girl at the counter said she couldn't change it and went in the back to ask. She came out and said can't do it. So I asked for the manager to come out and I personally had to explain it to her. She put it in as a "substitution" for 50 cents . Didn't even have the ability to override the sale. I've been to a few Surf Tacos at other locations and wasnt too impressed. This location is amazingly clean, the staff is friendly and the food is fantastic. The queso and salsa bar was THE BEST. Delicious salsas, not chunky at all and very flavorful. The only negative I can think of is I wish there was a larger selection of toppings you can include in your meal. Red Bank is NO Manasquan, where my beach house is. The people just aren't as dope/hip/progressive/original in Red Bank....in general. The Surf Taco here is a reflection of this area's population...again, its not as chill to eat in here....kinda blah. Regarding the food, the fish tacos are pretty tasty and the tempura shrimp tacos are savory as well....but its lacking the ambience of the Surf Taco in Manasquan. LOVE me some Surf Taco! I've lived in Red Bank for two months & have had a significant number of meals at this place already. Locate right downtown, it's a quick order-at-the-counter joint with a massive menu & some fun twists on the traditional taco. My favorite is the mango shrimp taco, filled with coconut-battered shrimp, a light slaw, & a sweet mango chutney & served with chips on the side. Salsa, of course, comes from the all-you-can-consume salsa bar - my favorite is the hottest one, which I don't find to be unbearably hot. I've also tried a few other varieties, worried that the mango shrimp taco, a summer special, would soon leave the menu (though it hasn't yet). I've liked almost all of them, with nothing standing out too much except for the Philly cheesesteak tacos (AMAZING) & the mahi tacos (too dry, less than amazing). Verdict: I'll go back for the mango shrimp tacos as long as they've got 'em, but when they're gone, I'm sure I'll find something else to love. A tip: Though you may be inclined to think that one taco could never a full meal make, you'd be wrong. JUST ONE! Your stomach will thank you afterward. I LOVE Surf Taco as a chain. This location is no exception but there are a few things about it that I don't love as much. Maybe it was the time and day we were there but it seemed like a playground mob basically came through and was in the process of leaving. Because the space is huge and echoes, it was loud. A lot of the tables were filthy. They also didn't have the temperature control quite worked out. However the food was still great. I love their taco salad! The salsa bar is great too. Stopped in during the street fair in red bank. We didn't think it was open at first it was so dark inside compared to everywhere else. Ordering was simple sat down, a little lack of help behind the counter as the solo girl working the register seemed overwhelmed. Food was good for "fast food". As compared to Burger King or something like that. The staff brining out the food seemed a little lost but just a perception since they appeared to walk around countless times looking the numbers on people's tables. This is my go to spot after the beach. I wish they had the vegan taco special at every location because it is an amazing deal and piled high with guac. You must get it! Everything is always fresh and I love how the ingredients aren't overly seasoned or salty. Let them speak for themselves. Simple Whole Foods are the best. Compared to other Surf Taco locations, the food here is incredibly bland. I went with a small group. We ordered chicken quesadillas, surf tacos and a chimichanga. All of which were mediocre and flavorless. We also found it strange that the large televisions displayed Surf Taco TV, which predominantly featured footage of Surf Taco employees standing awkwardly as their hobbies, most often "partying" and "tanning" scrolled across the screen. Surf Taco has slid downward since the last time I visited. Consistent food and decent atmosphere brought us back, but it didn't quite live up to its promise this round. The A/C was out, which I know can be a frustration for shops in the hot summers, so hopefully that gets sorted out soon. They did scatter a few floor fans around, but most of the overhead fans were not running to keep things cool. Odd. There were other signs of neglect on this quiet weekday. The soda machine was out of lots of flavors. Thankfully they had mine, but a sizable chunk was unavailable. The floors were dirty, with food scraps I nearly stepped in. I would overlook this in a frantic rush when staff couldn't keep up. But this was a pretty quiet night, so if expect staff to notice/clean these messes (right by the front door, not hard to see). The food isn't particularly authentic, but authenticity isn't why you come here anyway. You just want consistency. The chicken I ordered, though, seemed a bit different from my last visit. It was entirely unseasoned/unmarinated, and really dry. It needed some serious lubrication. I remembered this place having good flavors for their meat, like a Cafe Rio, but this chicken was bland and dry, as if the cook hadn't prepared chicken before. This place certainly has potential to improve back to the spot it had before- a relaxing place to enjoy some gringo tacos. Hopefully next round it will be back to its fighting shape. read more

Vegan tacos are great but the chips are not vegan. It is my kids favorite dinner spot in Red Bank. The food is always delicious and fresh. People at my school rave about this place so I decided to head into Red Bank during my lunch break and give it a try. I could not decide what to eat so I went for something with chicken. Seemed safe enough. I ended up ordering the Baja Bowl since I love me burrito bowls. It was honestly okay. Your typical no frills burrito bowl with veggies, rice, and cheese. A little disappointed there was no guac or sour cream but I should have read the menu a little better. The chicken was a little undercooked for my liking, but I guess they couldn't cook it any longer without it being completely rubbery and inedible. The portion size was decent. Service was pretty quick. Girl at the counter could have been a little friendlier but hell, I know working in fast food is hell so I go easy on the employees whenever I go out to eat. There is a huge echo in that place. It was so quiet a pin could drop when I walked in and sat, but soon after all hell broke loose when a group of children and their mothers walked in. Would definitely not come here on a weekend when all the kiddies are running rampant if you like a relatively quiet eating atmosphere. Overall, not quite what I expected. A little too much hype. Today I went with my three young children and husband to Surf Taco, an old favorite of mine. When we got to the Red Bank location, it wasn't busy and after we decided what to eat, my husband went up to order. Everything was going very smoothly at this point, what could go wrong, really? Until.... My son's quesadilla arrives with steak. Ordered plain cheese, no big deal, easy to fix. My daughter decides she wants nachos instead of what my husband ordered another no big deal, easy to fix. My two daughters' smoothies never came, ok, I'll take care of all of this at once. I wait online at the counter, the check out girl taking a verrrryyyy long time, but ok. I get up there and as I am explaining to said check-out girl, a female food runner, places our number stand back up at the counter. The Runner then says so flippantly "You table 27?", "Yeah." "What's the problem" with way too much venom for an easy saturday with not a lot of customers as she grabs the quesadilla, I tell her and she actually sneers at me. I indicate I also want to order nachos and she throws me an exasperated "Well tell her!" as she point to the check-out girl, (yeah ok, so why did you interrupt to begin with??) and then I said we also need our smoothies to her. She huffs and she puffs and disappears. As my family and I are eating our lunch and my daughter is still waiting for her nachos another food runner comes into my view holding the nachos. I smile and wave her over and she barks "This is for you? You table 27?" and I say "Yes". She says like I have committed sloppy murder right there. "Well, where is your table number?" "The girl took it before", and my kids can't believe how rude she is, and I haven't even flipped my bitch switch on. I say "Why is the service so terrible today what's going on here?" She makes the phone sign with her thumb and pinkie to her mouth and ear and says so rudely "Call about it" I say "What's your name?" She turns and ignores me and then I say "That's ok i'll just take a picture of you" because now I am pissed and she turns and frames her face with her hands to pose for the picture. My children; 6,8&9, could not believe her, and they have no problem calling me out when they think I am not nice, so clearly having their support meant I didn't step once out of line. These two girls were so rude and ruined my lunch with my family for no reason. Hungover, tired, annoyed, not in the mood? Me also girls but I am not in the service industry trying to sell not only food but the whole "Surf Taco Experience". Such a disappointment and after hitting almost every location, I will never go back, because 70 bucks for a fast food lunch with my family on a saturday to be undeservedly disrespected by two college girls who have a food runner power trip is not my idea of money or time well spent. We stopped at Red Bank's new location of Surf Taco when we were in NJ in June, and all of the buzz we'd heard from the locals made us wish we had one of these closer to Baltimore. The restaurant is clean, busy, and well-staffed. It's an order-at-the-counter deal, and your food is delivered to your table. The taco list is massive, and the day we visited they also had a list of a half-dozen specials, mostly involving fresh fruit, shrimp, or fish. His plate: Combo #3 - chicken tender taco and waffle fries; steak taco Her plate: Combo #2 (pick two tacos, served with rice, beans, and chips) - garlic shrimp taco; shrimp and mango taco (special) My garlic shrimp taco was described as: fresh shrimp sauteed with garlic, topped with shredded cabbage, Pico de Gallo, white cilantro sauce & a squeeze of lime. The shrimp and mango was similar - tempura shrimp topped with shredded cabbage, Pico de Gallo, fresh mango, avocado, & a squeeze of lime. Both tacos were served on warm flour shells, and I was impressed by how many of the listed flavors came through. The garlic shrimp had great garlic and lime flavor, and the cilantro sauce was cool and creamy but not overdressed, and married well with the shredded cabbage crunch. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, definitely done to order. The mango shrimp was great - the avocado worked nicely with the mango and the crunch of the shrimp. I'd probably order this sauteed instead of fried next time, if it was on the special board again, just because of how nicely the shrimp were cooked in the other taco. I tend towards fried shrimp when I don't trust a restaurant, but Surf Taco has definitely proven itself here. D thoroughly enjoyed both of his tacos, and was happy to have fries along with Mexican - a perfect mix, he said. We were both pretty disappointed in the salsas, though we were initially happy that they were out on a condiment bar free-for-all. Neither of us even thought of adding sauce to our tacos - they were full of flavor and great as is. The chips that are served with the tacos, though, definitely wanted some salsa. The verde wasn't quite tangy or hot enough for us - it was a bit of an odd, thick texture, too - almost syrupy. The baja was a little smoky, but faded too quickly to tomato, and the hot just wasn't really that hot - though it smelled spicy. In all, we loved it here - and both agreed that we wouldn't complain about eating these tacos every day. If you're in the area, give it a try - there are six in and around Monmouth County. read more

Ill give them two stars for the way they re did the place . It looks really cool until you glance at the floor and tables and realize it hasn't been swept or cleaned since the day before it seemed. Terrible lighting at the front ( Try replacing the bulbs so you can actually read the menu) Not that it would really matter i dont think. This place makes McDonalds look good food quality wise. But if you leave it to be run by 16 year olds what do you except ? I saw no adult supervision & the food was tasteless glop except the guacamole & chips . You have to pay extra for salsa & chips or sour cream and guacamole as a side ? We couldn't get out of there fast enough and threw out !/2 our "food" or more . Sorry fast food is bad enough but tasteless mexican fast food in a dirty new restaurant is un expectable . Well I dont think Juanito's or anyone else in town has anything to worry about if you want real Mexican food. I dont think a second chance is in the cards anytime soon . But maybe they will realize you cant let teenagers run a restaurant at some point . There are much better Mexican options out there. Food is pretty bland, and the few times I have eaten in, my food has been somewhat cold. If it was cheaper, I would give them a higher rating. The price point of their food is just too high compared to quality of the food. read more

While this is the closest Surf Taco to me, it is the only one I hadn't tried. My food was really good. I stuck with my usual Surf Burrito. The decor of this one is pretty cool. Staff was nice and food came out without a long wait. Will be back to this spot for sure!!! read more
