I contacted Whitney of Surface Flooring after having a terrible time with Empire Today. I was in need of new carpet and vinyl flooring in my basement. I really liked a Shaw product that Empire carried and Whitney was able to source that carpet for me. He was extremely responsive and came the day I called him to measure and show color samples to my wife. His pricing was very fair and installation was done within a week of placing the order. Whitney's installers showed up on time, were extremely friendly and professional. This was more than a simple install as my basement has a fairly long staircase with a railing at the bottom that required carpeting around multiple spindles. All of my old carpet and vinyl tile was taken away. Carpet install and flooring install took place over separate days, but Whitney showed up both days to check on the work. There were closet doors that were too tight to be carpeted under which was a failure on my part to explain beforehand that I was willing to cut the doors down to fit. After the initial install, I called Whitney that day and explained that I wanted the carpet to go under the doors and I would cut them down to fit. He had his installers come back within two days to extend the carpet into the closet for me. I have never experienced such excellent follow up from any other home contractor. I would not hesitate to recommend Whitney and Surface Flooring and if I could rate them 10 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and don't call the big guys like Empire, Home Depot, etc. You'll save yourself the headache and lost time that I suffered by not calling a locally run company first. read more

I was in the need for new hardwood floors, refinishing old wood floors, stairs, rails, and new carpet in my bedroom. I am currently expecting a baby girl and needed it done quickly. When I made contact with Whitney and Ben, they were able to work with me and my timeline that I needed in order to get the job done. I had 5 quotes and they were the lowest of the group. I quickly selected Surface Flooring to install and refinish my floors. Upon the install, I was having trouble with my furnace, even though Whitney had no obligation, he took his own personal time to check out my furnace. This showed to me that not only was I hiring someone to do a job, but a company that cares about the customer. The install in the family room, back stairs, and upstairs foyer; and the refinish of the dining room, foyer, living room, main stairs, rails and balusters took approximately one week to finish. I am more than satisfied with the look and service I received. I also had new carpets added to my Master Bedroom, closets, and sitting room. They finished in about 5 hours. The color, feel, and comfort is everything I wanted and beyond. Upon completion, I reached out to Ben about knowing someone to hang my chandelier in my foyer. The next day he had his electrician over to complete the task including custom work on the mounting process. If you had a six star rating -- or a seven or higher -- I'd give it to Surface Flooring. Their service and professionalism were superb, as were their prices, Whitney Cowles was among the most responsive service deliverers we've dealt with; he explained our options with answers he would have given were he the customer. (He once talked me out of a very expensive choice I would otherwise have made.) He immediately addressed/satisfied every issue or concern we had, and even did so in ways that increased his costs. In addition, his installation team was experienced and helpful -- doing the job quickly and well, and moving heavy furniture perfectly and, after the job was done, moving it to different places until my wife was satisfied with the new placements. Frustrated as one becomes with modern forms of "service," it was wonderful to be able to move back in time through Surface Flooring to remember what service was like when one didn't need to put quotation marks around the word. We also hired Surface Flooring to refinish the wood floors in our living room, and found their work on this job as good as it was for the work they did in laying maple flooring in another part of the house. Whitney and his crew bent over backwards to accommodate my hectic schedule and constant changes in requirements... we were the nightmare customers and Whitney never showed it, but instead addressed us with positivity and "can do" attitude!!! We had a large hardwood flooring project (with repairs) that needed to be done quickly. We had multiple other professionals not wanting to take the job because of the schedule and complexity. I was beyond relieved that not only did Ben (Surface Flooring) take it on, it was done in 5 1/2 days. Other contractor said it would take 7-8 days. Our floors look brand new. Ben offered us a fair price that was in line with all other quotes. A job this big started with a lot of anxiety, but after the 1st day I realized we chose the right flooring contractor. Surface flooring not only did a wonderful job in my new single house but also were very good about keeping me updated on the timing for replacing the carpets in my townhouse after I moved out. Huge job: Installing traditional wood flooring in large space and refinishing existing wood flooring in another. The stain, type of wood, width patterns all had to match. Lots of large furniture to move around while the work got done, including kitchen appliances. And it all had to be put back when the job was done.
