Visited this restaurant a couple of days ago and the food was definitely worth the hype. A pro tip: they do not take reservations so, be prepared to wait. Now, I only ordered on thing which was their chicken thali - it was a well balanced thali with starter, main course, accompaniment, two small portions of soup & sol kadhi and salad. The tandoori chicken was very authentic - exactly what you would get in India (crispy and juicy). The chicken with curry was very well prepared too. It would be nice if they introduced a vegetarian thali too. Besides the place being busy, the servers managed it all well and the songs played reminded me of Indian ambiance. Best fish thali I ever had! Authentic Maharashtrian / Malvani soul satisfying taste. They source the fish directly from India with a special license. You can taste the difference of fresh fish. Kolambi fry was amazingly crunchy. We tried both Surmai Thali and Paplet thali. We replaced the rice for a rice bhakri. The whole paplet with its marination was too good. The restaurant menu mainly consists of konkan and maharashtrian food The staff was extra attentive about our needs and informative about their food. We tried their king fish thali which would have most of the items which you can order as separate entree as well if you have specific favs. We wanted to try multiple item so we went with the Thali options. The fish was fried perfectly and the masala had a little bit of tangy flavor probably specific to maharashtrian cuisine . Fish was almost fresh . Ambiance was very nice and service was nice too but food was okay. I was excited to try the salmon steak tawa fry but wow it was bland. For an Indian restaurant I expected spice but I could go to Chilis and they'd season their fish more. That was unfortunate. I can't say I'd go back. We went for dinner and order couple of items like Surmai fry, Pomfret fry, mutton masala, chicken tikka masala, Kolambi (shrimp) masala, burnt garlic fried rice with chicken. I also ordered tea to finish off and change the taste bud but it was like dipping tea with no flavor. Although the service was good but the taste was below par. What an excellent service and great food. Being from Goa, our fish and Konkani food standards are pretty high. But Surmai is the closest that takes me back home. Visited the place with family on a Saturday for lunch, ordered 2 Thalis - Surmai and the special thali which had fried prawns, mutton curry and chicken curry. We also ordered the specials of the day - Bangde fry, kheema pao and a triple schezuan fried rice. The food was flavorful, the fried surmai and prawns were done well - the marination and coating well blended. The fish curry was the best while the chicken and mutton curries were good, however the meat was tough so not very enjoyabl the beverages of Lassi and Kokum were delicious. We frequent this place every other week since we prefer protein-rich diet and need a break from chicken/eggs regularly. Their thalis (pomfret/paplet, surmai, bangda) are our favorites although we have tried individual dishes such as crab masala as well. The taste is almost always good and their staff (Dixon and others) is always friendly and attentive. They use Indian pomfret, which is more expensive and tasty than the golden pompano.
