My first visit to Surmai can be summed up by flavorful food and great service. We sat outside and it was pleasant. I had the Surmai Thali- the Surmai fry was fresh, didn't have any "fishy" taste, was perfectly crispy and a great portion. The fish curry was also delicious and had pieces of green mango. We got the Konkani chicken curry to go and I can't wait to try it. The staff were friendly and attentive. Special shout out to Chef Tushar for his kindness and hospitality. 3.5 STARS When in Sunnyvale... Indian food! Sunnyvale is THE place in the South Bay for regional Indian cuisine. We're usually the only non-Indians and I rarely see yipsters which is always a good sign. I remember when Puranpoli (vegetarian) first opened during the height of the pandemic, they had hella raving reviews within days of opening. So no surprise, their new sister resto: Surmai has too. Opening in the former Falafel Bite is Surmai (means king mackerel), offering takeout, indoor dining, and outdoor dining in the parking lot. It's soft opening weekend and they're still figuring things out. Hate to be the first person to not give 5 stars but we had quite a different experience than others. M E N U Maharashtrian/Marathi Coastal Cuisine with seafood being their specialty. Currently a limited soft opening menu: Apps (kebabs), curries, fish + shrimp fry, thali, and indo-chinese dishes. F O O D * Kolambi Fry: Rava Fried Tiger Prawns cooked w/ malvani spices (8 pc-$16.99) // 3.5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/4exjsux5 Butterflied shrimp marinated in mildly spicy, dry-roasted warning spices and coated in semolina producing flavorful fried shrimp with a pronounced textured crunch. Told staff about the undercooked chicken and they offered to comp my friend's can of coke. * Burnt Garlic Fried Rice: Stir-fried rice w/ mixed vegetables, soy sauce, pepper, garlic ($12.99) // 3.5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/2kmjcvh8 + $3.5 Shrimp + $1.5 Egg Love indo-chinese dishes so had to order this. Tasty, fluffy separated basmati rice studded with egg (no wok hei). What little garlic there was burnt to a charcoal on one side giving an acrid aftertaste. When providing feedback, I was told the garlic was supposed to be burnt black and bitter. I guess that's their regional style but I've known burnt garlic fried rice to be made with crispy, golden brown garlic. There were two types of shrimp, whole tender stir-fried shrimp and fried (?) marinated tiger shrimp that was chopped up. The latter was tough and rubbery, akin to chicken breast. Mild flavor so great for those who can't take spicy. Served with a side of chili sauce. * Raita ($2.49) // 4.5 stars Thick and creamy with a tang. S E R V I C E Friendly service, all the staff we encountered were very kind. Food took awhile (first diners of the day and not busy at the time) but it's a soft opening so understandable. One of the food runners kept trying to take away our plates and utensils when delivering a dish. This happened twice and it wasn't to give us a new set so I hope they continue to train. A M B I A N C E Casual with burgundy walls and peacock + swan paintings. Good amount of indoor seating with a handful of tables in the parking lot. Only one table has an umbrella for shade. We tried this Surmai for the first time and it was a very wholesome meal. I came here because I wanted to try the irresistible rava fish and it didn't disappoint. We got the Surmai Thali, Chicken Kabab, few rotis and a dal. This was quite a bit of food. The Thali came with the fish fry which was amazing, a fish curry with a perfectly spicy curry and two other things. The other gravy type thing tasted very similar to the fish curry and didn't add new flavor to my plate. The pink item was like a mix between rasam and raita so was interesting and yum! The thali is good enough for one two people depending on appetite. The dal tadka was ok too. The service was prompt and everyone took care of us pretty well. Ambience for lunches was busy and that's expected. I am definitely coming back here for the rava pomfret again :) read more

Nearly everything that came on the Special Thali was super spicy from the coconut-based Konkani Chicken Masala (with bone-in thigh meat) and Mutton Masala (with tough bone-in chunks of mutton) to the Kolambi Fry, four tiger prawns coated in Malvani spices and a crispy rava (semolina) batter. The thali also came with a spicy Tambda Rassa (chicken/mutton broth) and a mild Pandhra Rassa (chicken/mutton broth with coconut milk), both of which were hot, unctuous, and flavorful. Went there as a party of 2 on Sunday evening around 7.45. There is plenty of parking available. Was greeted by a multiple groups waiting for their tables. You put down your babe with the host ( it's possible you have to wait for them as they help out inside as well). Our wait time was around 20-25 min. The table setting was nice. Also, I was the only non-desi there - seems promising. Ordered the special thali. It was a great selection! I bookmarked this a while ago after seeing the photos. Earlier today, I saw some of the reviews and decided to check it out. The front of the restaurant was *popping* - 45-minute to hour-long wait, people lined up outside, everyone laughing and all kinds of anticipation. I found a parking spot and got right in there. They let me order takeout. I got the Surmai Rava Fish Fry and some Bhakri. It was so delicious and well-seasoned! We visited Surmai on a Saturday afternoon with a group of 5. We checked in, gave our name and waited around 10 minutes to get a table. This place opened recently in March 2024. The waiters were Maharastrian and greeted us with a warm welcome. We ordered King fish fry, Shrimp fry and Fish thali. The food was delicious. The server told us that the fish was imported from India and fresh. Although the place is slightly on the expensive side, ~$50 a person post tax / tip, for the authenticity the food is worth it. Our first reaction when we first saw the menu. What will the vegetarians in our group eat? There were literally 2items in the menu that the vegetarians could order. The 2nd reaction, the thalis seem very expensive ~$30/person. 3rd reaction, thali's portion size was small. The service was great, even with all the exotic dishes, they didn't make us wait. Our main reason to try this out was to try out the authentic coastal maharashtrian cuisine. I do not have a great baseline to say how authentic it was. But the fish fry tasted amazing! The fish curry had a strong coconut taste and I wasn't a fan. The saar tasted very similar to the curry with a strong hint of masala. There was a pink bowl given to us, I couldn't figure out what that was, but pretty much detested it. The shrimp was great, nice flavors but it was charred on the edges which brought down the overall taste a little down. Surprisingly the fried rice and the Manchurian which were the outliers in the authentic menu, tasted pretty good. Overall, good place to try. Exceptional konkan food! Multiple visits highly recommended to try their full menu. I went in on a Friday afternoon. The restaurant was buzzing with very few tables to spare. Since I was dining solo, I had to endure some wait for one of the smaller tables to get empty. After 15-ish mins, I was eventually seated at a table of 4. I appreciated them respecting patron wait time. Food: The menu is brilliantly designed to help you relish a thali or a fish entree. As a Mumbaikar living in the Bay Area, I know how hard it is to source Indian fish--especially pomfret (paplet) or mackerel (surmai). I was skeptical about being served authentic fish but loved learning how the Surmai team imported and prepared the dishes. I tried the paplet thali and the fish preparation was spot on! And remember, if you're not using your fingers to eat, you're not eating right! Background: The restaurant is a family owned business. They are the same owners as the other popular Maharashtrian restaurant, Puranpoli in Santa Clara, that serves vegetarian dishes only. I was surprised to learn that the master chef behind all the fish delicacies was a wonderful aai (Mother in Marathi) by the name Vasundhara. There is a bit of a wait time but it's soo worth it. The food is delicious My favorite was the roti that came with the thali, it was extremely soft and just delicious with all the curries that you get in the thali. Special thali comes with 4 fried shrimp, chicken curry, mutton curry, a bowl of rice and few other liquid currys I believe might've been extras for the rice. There was this pink coconuty bowl which was great too. A very scrumptious meal for sure. It's about $25 - $30 for each thali. The Surmai thali has fish fry and fish curry which was also super delicious. We got the Kolambi Fry which is fried shrimp, it was super crispy and juicy, a bit on the salty side though, yet very delicious. I also got the kokam sarbat, it was soo refreshing, I simply loved it. They have some pretty peacock paintings all around the place, which added a nice touch. It had a bunch or seating but it is close together which wasn't too bothersome. so far i've tried most of the seafood appetizers and all of the curries i.e. kolambi masala, chicken masala and mutton masala. while their appetizers are delicious and very authentic, I felt like all of the curries tasted exactly the same, and were a bit too spicy even after requesting "less spice". I was excited to try this place because of the great reviews especially on the seafood. My husband ordered us takeout from here on his way home from work so I didn't get to tell him to choose a seafood dish. It was not as amazing as I thought it would be and I'm not sure the quality of the seafood will be much better. We got the following: Egg coconut curry: 3/5 had some spice to it, a little too hot for me. It was heavier than I would have liked, thought the coconut would make it lighter. Also it was very oily. Konkani masala chicken: 3/5 flavorful but not outstanding, also heavy and oily. Garlic Naan: 3/5 standard, but I did like the seasoning on it. Rice: 2/5 rice was short grain, I prefer longer grain and really basic. Overall was not impressed by the takeout. I may be back try the fish or thalis but it's no longer top of my list. I will note I'm not an expert on this type of Indian cuisine so perhaps it is authentic and delicious for those who grew up with it, but definitely not my favorite Indian cuisine. read more

We ordered 2 pamplet thali, 1 surmai thali, kolmbi fry, bangde fry (the day's special), triple Schezwan fried rice and chicken (Indo-Chinese style). All of the Konkan coastal food was delicious. The Pamplets (thankfully the Indian silver pomfret and not the golden pampano) was decent sized and tasted great. For drinks, we had solkadi and a couple of kokum sherbets. We had heard a lot about this place and maybe went there with too much expectations. Location is good, plenty of parking available. We went here on almost-fall Sunday afternoon so outside seating was pleasant. All the tables can be covered with umbrellas which is a good attention to detail from the management. I am vegetarian... I thought I am mostly accompanying my husband and I will have to be happy with Solkadhi and Rice. However they do that good options for vegetarians too. Rather, my veg order was tastier and better than his fish and chicken dishes (according to him) I liked Triple Sezhwan Rice, and Manchurian with it was good too. Mango Lassi was very Maharashtrian... Almost Shrikhand with Jaiphal and Velchi. Depending on your sweet tooth, you will either love it or hate it. Husband was not impressed with the Surmai though. He found fish to be too oily. Bhakari could have been better if not served on warm rice. It had gotten soggy on the rice. Solkadhi was the best. Thali seemed a bit expensive, if they can give a smaller version of Thali that would be awesome. Pandhara Rassa was good too. Amazing food , must try kolambi fry, mutton masala, Konkani chicken masala with Bhakri . Biryani was decent . I would recommend to eat in as the place is big and has good ambience and u can eat those delicious appetizers and entrees right out of the kitchen. There is plenty parking outside . We had a pleasant experience at Surmai. We were seated at a table near the entrance, where the prevailing wind was quite strong. Upon inquiring with the server about a more suitable table, we were informed that it would take approximately 10 minutes to secure one. During this time, we stayed in our vehicle while the server would contact us when the table was ready. For drinks, we got the Old Monk beer. Subsequently, we ordered a Paplet Thali.
