Oddly I haven't spent much time in Michigan, despite how close it is to Chicago, but was so surprised to find a few restaurants and cute stores in little Sawyer, MI. Ended up here for dinner before heading back to Chicago on a day trip. The atmosphere is not at all what you'd expect to find in a small town. It's midcentury modern vibe and decor are beautiful! The food is also presented really well. Again, exceeding expectations! I had the fried chicken sandwich which was so good and had just the right amount of heat. The fries were great too. I was told the menu changes based on the season and your best bet is to order a few small plates to share. I can't wait to go back in the summer to check out more of what Michigan has to offer and also see what Susan's has in store for me.. read more

My husband and I just found out about Susan's. We ate there tonight for our 32nd anniversary dinner. I seldom write reviews, but Susan's deserves one. The food, cocktails, wine, service and atmosphere are perfect. Coming back soon. We split the Gem Salad and Burrata appetizer. Delicious. We both ordered the beef tenderloin with the Japanese sweet potato and creamed corn. Meals were cooked on point. The blueberry tart was really good for dessert. Kudos to Cecilia and the chef. my first ever chef's table experience did not disappoint. everything was so thoughtfully planned on this menu, it couldn't have been better. as seasoned industry people, we thoroughly enjoyed sitting right in the action of a brand new spot with so much heart. as the vegetarian present, I tried: mushroom appetizer, honey glazed carrots, cauliflower soup, potato wedges served with their burger, turnips and creamed spinach before devouring both bread pudding with bourbon ice cream AND chocolate cakes with a sour cherry ice cream. all paired nicely with a few glasses of malbec, I was thoroughly impressed with the entire experience. bravo, chef + team. bravo. read more

Spent the weekend in SW Michigan and went here the first night, and went back the following night! It was that good. Great location, beautiful spot and knowledgeable friendly staff. Had the Risotto one night which was sublime. Had the Amish Chicken the second night and was equally as good. Great outdoor space too and fully shaded in the afternoons which is a plus! read more

This little restaurant is a gem in Sawyer! We visited for our third time last night and it happened to be Valentine's . We chose their V-day 3 course feature menu which started off with a bright mixed green salad with apples and cranberries which was the perfect intro to dinner. We made a special request for the biscuits which are light and flaky and are an absolute must! The next course was filet mignon for two with au jus, smashed potatoes which were so creamy and delicious, and garlic broccoli. If they added this option to the menu, I would order it every time! The finale was a butternut squash cheesecake, served with a chocolate sorbet. I loved that their dessert was sweet but not too sweet, very well balanced. Speaking of dessert, the apple bread pudding that is currently on the menu might be one of my favorite desserts of all time. I also added the wine/cocktail pairing which perfectly complimented each course. Besides the amazing food, this restaurant is beautiful and the service is spot on! It is so impressive to watch the care given to each dish before it leaves the open air kitchen. If you're lucky enough, you can snag a couple seats right at the kitchen rail and watch a pretty amazing show. Cant wait to visit again soon! read more

A tiny little place off the beaten path of I-94 on the way from Chicago Harbor Country, this lovey restaurant with excellent food and better service was a pleasant surprise. Susan's was recommended by a friend who lives near Sawyer, MI. The main street of the town is small, but the food is world class and plated so beautifully. I'm always in search for a good risotto so I tried the broccoli risotto which was very delicious. The portion was just the right size. Couple that with the house salad and a glass of pinot noir (adding the years to the menu would be a nice addition) and it was the perfect light dinner for a summer evening. The eclectic interior filled with greenery was very welcoming, but the day I was there the weather was fantastic so I sat outside where the tables were dog friendly. I certainly plan to visit again, next time I'm heading to Michigan. read more

Excellent fine dining experience- a true gem, not to be missed! For starters, the food is spectacular- inventive and prepared with extraordinary attention to detail. The menu items have been chosen with care to maintain excellence rather than trying to offer too much. The ambience is unlike anything else in harbor country. Modern decor in an historic building with original decorative ceiling complemented by warm colors and fine architectural details. The tables are spaced for intimate dining experiences and the staff is attentive and thoughtful. The food was outstanding. HOWEVER, the portions were ridiculously inadequate. I have not complained about portions anywhere for the last 50 years other than they are usually too large. My risotto entree was basically a cup and the stuffed cabbage appetizer the server said was good for "sharing" were the size of my thumb. There were 2 of them just like my thumbs. Wonderful food, even for (especially for?) vegetarians like me. I had a delicious mushroom risotto, Japanese sweet potato, and cauliflower, that paired together beautifully. The seasonal dessert of local rhubarb, puff pastry and whipped cream was light and delightful. I'm so happy Susan's survived the pandemic when so many didn't. We dined as a group of five at Susans on Friday, July 10 for dinner and it was a fantastic experience. I have seen some restaurants not taking the appropriate precautions during this time and have had to walk out, but Susans goes above and beyond to make sure their customers feel safe. We sat outside on their patio and were able to socially distance from others. All staff wore masks the whole time, they had paper menus, and you could also scan a barcode to pull the menu up on your phone. They also had hand sanitizer at every table! Our server, Roberto, was great and the food was delicious. I would highly recommend Susans if you are looking for a pleasant restaurant experience during Covid (or any time for that matter). Food was *very* good (we had the half chicken, burger, and mac and cheese). Actually, we never went to Susan's. I made a reservation 3 weeks before this last weekend to celebrate 3 birthday's. On Saturday, we called to make sure our 7:00pm reservation was good and to let them know it was a special occasion. The first person and second person we spoke with said "we do not take reservations". They were very rude and unfriendly. I know it is becoming quite popular, but they could have at least been customer friendly and attempted to accommodate or pacify us. I cannot wait until the Terrace Room reopens. A new restaurant, decent, but they have some work to do. Despite being the only two people in the dining room it took well over 15 minutes for someone to come and get our drink order. There was an upcharge for blue cheese stuffed olives for martinis. That's a new one for me. Fine dining restaurants usually assume that option. Portions are a bit small for sharing. My duck entree was good, but the skin was not crispy enough and there was a layer of fat under the skin ... that would have been melted if the skin had been crisped. Also, it was served in a concave bowl which made it difficult to eat. My friend ordered a steak that was frightfully thin, though she said it was prepared well. Biscuits were not refilled. It's a bit on the pricey side at this point. If they get the kinks worked out it might be okay. It is noisy for conversation. read more

Susan's is without a doubt the nicest, most inviting and tastiest restaurant I have been to in the New Buffalo/Sawyer area. The menu is unique providing the feel of a 5-Star Chicago restaurant palate while still having staples for everyone. My favorite thins on the menu are the Branzino, if are you looking for something on the lighter side, and the dry aged burger- which scrumptious experience is worth every penny. The wine list is robust with a good price point and the cocktails are as delightful as the bartender who serves them. The owner, Cecilia Peterson, is most accommodating and friendly to be around as are the rest of the restaurant staff. Susan's is a safe place to dine amidst the pandemic. We were hoping for something much better. Very chic space - cool interior, comfy outdoor area. Asked for a mojito - a nice summer drink seeing that it was August - but the waiter, Chad, said they don't make that drink. It would have been nice to have him suggest something comparable that they do make. No other comments. Anyway, we navigated the drink menu (the specialty cocktail list is very brief) and had wine, which was good but pricey - $15/glass. When we got seated, we ordered the seafood coktail (that's how it's spelled), which in its description had octopus, shrimp, and crab. We both were expecting a platter with these seafood items on it, but instead, it came in a glass with really runny cocktail sauce. We had even asked the waitress about the item, and she didn't say anything about it being in a sauce. I had a bite of the octopus and it was really slimy, and I love octopus. Fortunately, they were kind enough to take it back. Great bread, as others have commented. We then both ordered a mixed salad - $14 each for lettuce and some herbs! It was good, but $14 for lettuce? For entrees, we had the Cavatelli and also the Halibut. They were both great, but I swear the halibut could not have been more than 4 oz and they priced it at $45. I was expecting a bigger piece, with some potatoes perhaps. Nope, just a tiny piece of halibut. The cavatelli was good, but also a VERY small portion for the price. I don't mind paying for quality food, as long as it is appropriate pricing for what you get. Needless to say, we probably won't be going back. read more

My husband and I went to Susan's last weekend and were completely delighted with the entire experience. We sat at the bar while we waited for a table and the service and drinks were superb. I had a Susan's 75 which is a spin on a French 75, and it was wonderful. Dinner was amazing, everything so fresh and beautifully prepared that we went up to the open kitchen and practically applauded. My husband had the evening special short rib sandwich which was the best sandwich I have ever tasted. We spent a little time chatting with Chad the chef and co-owner who was interesting and charming. This spot just opened a week ago and I'm certain it's going to be a HIT! Tucked inside a grand old building in Sawyer the space is new/contemporary and provides an open kitchen style. I couldn't find a link to the (delightfully refreshing) menu but I ordered; meatball (app), salad and entree. I arrived early so I had the pleasure of the chef serving me a wonderful "bread" that was out-of-this world. That was just the beginning... the 2 (giant) meatballs would have been enough for me with a salad but I just had to try out some other items so I only nibbled and took some home for later. The meatballs are served with roasted prunes - who would have thought these 2 would work so well together - it was an incredible taste experience. The salad had a wonderful dressing and a perfectly cooked "boiled" egg! The entree was butternut squash (patties) nestled on a warm bed of OATMEAL (yes, another unexpected delight) and surrounded by roasted brussel sprouts. I took some of that home too! I wouldn't call this "traditional" because it's so "original". The menu had me wanting to try everything, the combination of ingredients and the visual presentation along with the great service and friendly "vibe" makes this my new favorite place!! read more

We love it. Great addition to sleepy Sawyer scene. Yes, there's Greenbush, but this is DINING. Service is excellent. Lighting is perfect. Decor modern, yet cozy. Menu small, but adequate and well executed. LOVE the open kitchen. The food doesn't come up super speedy quick, but it's not jimmyjohns. Watching the cooks in the kitchen is part of the fun. Very welcoming environment. Love the music being played (pop classics, etc) at just the right volume. The BF and I have been twice now, and can't wait to go back. Salads are yummy and share-able. We had the frisee, which comes with shards of good bacon and a perfect, jammy "hard" boiled egg and another of the salads. BF had the trout (which I believe is no longer an option) on first visit. I had the duck, which was good. Not life altering, but good. I agree with other reviewer that a bit crispier skin would be nice, but flavor and everything else pleasing. The steak! That was my second go around. Juicy, beefy, creamed spinach on the side, small, delicious turnips on the plate. The BF had the chicken second time. Nice potatoes and carrots and he was thrilled by the sharp knives they bring for the steak and dissection of the chicken. Flatware, dishes, glasses all place appropriate. For being new, I found the service and food to be excellent. Quite honestly, excellent period. Want to try a burger, even the catfish sandwich sounds good. I've no doubt that I will tour the entire menu. PS: The biscuits at the beginning of the meal (complimentary) come at the perfect time and are appreciated. read more
