Located this restaurant for our first stop of a long weekend up the Lake Michigan. We desired a pet friend patio to kill time until our room was ready on nearby St. Joseph. This restaurant was good and popular. We had the patio almost to ourselves but there was another pup family dining. Our server Alana was so friendly. Alana was good about checking in on us and making recommendations. For food, I got the ribs. They did not disappoint. Not too fatty and I enjoyed the sauce. The French fries were crisp and paired well with my cider. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone interested in trying some good food that is smoked right on sight. I like that this establishment advertised an array of entertainment to accompany their wonder food. Every plate that I saw come out looked good. Right in the heart of the beach town Union Pier is a cozy restaurant that was the perfect spot for our family and friends. I did not expect to see such a diverse cocktail menu, so when I saw they had a "Banana Foster" Martini, I had to have it (oh boy was it tasty ). Plenty of kids menu options, and I ended up having the Shepherd's Pie which was delicious. I had bites of my sister's Mushroom Burger and my Dad's SW Cobb salad which was also phenomenal. While in our favorite vacation area, New Buffalo, we were looking for a 'new to us' place that gets positive reviews and so we landed here. So glad we did because we plan to make Union Pier Social a regular stop on future trips. The staff was so friendly and welcoming! Everything we ordered was 100% delicious: French Kiss cocktail, Burrata starter (we loved it!), Meatball Grinder and Fish & Chips. Their house-made tartar sauce was so yummy and they were nice enough to give me another serving of it for my leftovers. This was a mixed bag. The interior is nice and the staff is friendly. They have happy hour all day on Sundays. I really liked the chicken wings. The buffalo sauce is on the spicy side and the bbq sauce is sweet. The red pepper bisque was good but needed a little salt and pepper. They do carry a beer I like from RI, where I used to live. I did not like the cheese curds. Instead of regular batter, the coating is like greasy bread. The pot roast and gravy was salty and the quality was iffy. Potatoes and carrots were fine. The place did not look open on a very slow fall Friday afternoon. I'd imagine in summer months they would be slammed at this time. It's a nice space and has really quaint outdoor area patio. Even with being on Red Arrow it is pretty quiet. Our server was prompt and friendly. We shared some curds to start. The execution was very different as they came in cubes. They were lightly crisped outside and creamy inside. Very different than typical but delicious. My son enjoyed his kids personal pizza. Their burgers are all smash burger style which has become a favorite of ours lately. I had the shroom burger. The wilted arugula gave a distinct and different flavor that added to the overall taste...it was quite good. My wife had the Union burger which came with bacon jam and crispy bacon. If you like bacon this is the burger for you. Fries were crispy and salted well. Would definitely come back and try some other things. Union Pier was okay, nothing special. The food was decent, but pricey. Our bartender was distracted, and not by other customers, but my other employees and friends. We stopped in for a quick lunch, and for basically microwaved food (Shepherds pie, we were warned they may be out of, but luckily they found one last serving) a beet salad, that didn't match the description from the menu. Ingredients were missing or not there at all. Corn chowder soup was just average. So yeah, pricey for what we got. Anyhoo, it's cute in there... maybe it was an off day. Meanwhile, servers walked by us, made eye contact, and we even heard them talk amongst themselves regarding whose table it was. Stopped for dinner tonight. Friends had raved about the place. They weren't very busy. Our waitstaff took a while to come to the table. We ordered an appetizer and pizza. The appetizer (cheese curds) was mediocre, but the pizza was probably the worst I've ever had. We got the meat lovers. There was very little meat, the pepperoni were the size of a nickel and maybe 8 burnt pieces on the whole 14" pizza, not much more sausage. The crust was decent, but the sauce was almost non existent and the cheese was sparse. Very disappointing. I've had better frozen pizzas. We both had water to drink. Both of us had an upset stomach after our meal. I don't think we'll be back. read more

Union Pier Social was incredible for our 24 person party! To celebrate a family 70th birthday, we called ahead and they reserved for us their side room with a decorative divider from the main space. All of the employees were very nice, and our server, Sam, was pleasant and on top of it! Their menu has a wonderful variety of options for adults and kids. We came here with some family to have dinner since we were staying in a place nearby. We started with a round of drinks, and while there is a good beer selection the cocktails are hot or miss. My partner got one called the Tropical Trash Can or something and it tasted like straight up cough medicine. But the staff was very kind and quickly helped resolve it with giving her an Aperol Spritz instead that was much better. We had a new and very kind waitress - the staff overall was great. We sat outside in a nice patio area; the inside looked sorta like a sports bar. Our group got the Tofu Sloppy Joe (vegan - good but needed more sauce), pulled pork sandwich (excellent), falafel bowl (excellent) and fish & chips (very good). Pleasantly surprised. If you come up from the Chicago area, it's easy to get frustrated with dining hours and access to whatever food you want at whatever time you want not as available in Southern Michigan as back home. My fave sandwich shop nearby had stopped serving right before I got there, so we decided to try Union Pier Social since it had been open since noon. We hadn't tried this one yet and it ended up being decent. I got a sandwich on a tasty roll with a unique and simple but flavorful broccoli slaw. My son's chicken nuggets had a really good breading which appeared homemade. Friendly service. The ambiance outside seems better than the bar vibe inside (for me anyways). I expected standard bar fare, but Union Pier Social showed up with some nice touches to make the food more flavorful and interesting. A nice afternoon stop. read more

Stopped in after 2:00 on a Saturday afternoon on our way home from a trip Up North. The hostess told us that we were welcome to come in - but the kitchen was a little backed up - we wouldn't be able to order food for 10 minutes. That's not a problem for us - happy to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink while we wait. At the bartender's recommendation, I ordered the Detox Lemonade - refreshing lemonade and vodka with a splash of club soda. Perfect. Rick had a La Crema chard. Menu has some interesting appetizers, along with many of the standards (firecracker shrimp, cauliflower bites, fries) Since it was lunchtime - we opted for just the entrees. The Southwest Chicken Flatbread for Rick and the Mango Pecan Salad for me. We love flatbreads that are done well - and this one did not disappoint. The flatbread itself was a nice thickness - not crackery thin but not too doughy. It's Pinsa Dough done right. the Southwest Ranch may have been a special recipe - or it may have been Hidden Valley with chipotle - regardless the flavor was good but didn't overpower the chicken, peppers, avocados and onion. The Mango Pecan Salad is a special for this summer - although I hope they keep it around. It was artfully presented - with the lightly fried poblano strips nestled on the top half of the salad and the smoked shredded chicken gently curved on the bottom half - ample portion of pecans, mangoes and other salad fixins rounded out the dish. The side salad was delicious and was full of fresh salad fixins', but that was the highlight of our meal. We tried several apps: the fried cauliflower, potstickers and crab cake. The cauliflower was average, with most of the pieces bites rather than florets. It came with an asian sweet sauce that didn't pair well with the breaded bites. The potstickers were good; however, the crab cake was thin and mushy and not very tasty. The bartender/server was attentive and friendly and we may go back for a drink at the bar or to try a burger.
