    Crunchy California roll
    Melody McCord S.

Deceit, quint spot for sushi. The waitresses were nice, extremely friendly, and we loved seeing other kids between the ages of 4 and 8 there, too. We ordered the tempura veggies, not what I expected. There were more so in clusters clumped together than individual vegetables cooked in tempura batter. Wasn't sure if this was the norm, but I didn't ask, but now that I'm writing, I should have. The crunchy California roll was surprising. We thought we were ordering the California roll with crunchies on top. Nope, it was actually cooked lightly with a tempura batter outer. Wouldn't order them again. The chicken fried rice was AMAZING, flavorful, perfectly cooked, and the vegetables were diced just right. All in all, it was OK. 101 was befitting.

This is the first sushi place I've had since moving from California. My server was great! She was very attentive and very nice. The sushi was okay, but I would have hoped for something a little more flavorful. The price was fair for what I purchased and I could really see this place filling up. I don't know what it was like before, but I feel like it could be really fun.

The two rolls in one package were one Super Crunch and one Mt. Fuji. How were we to know? They look the same.

Last night we tried Sushi 101 and Door Dash, both for the first time. The sushi was alright, no real complaints there, but I've had better. The ordering and delivering parts were easy, but we discovered that one sushi roll was not included in the bag. I called up the restaurant to explain the situation and was basically called a liar. After going over my order twice and being told that the roll was in my bag, while I was saying it was not, the guy on the phone told me repeatedly that "she put it in the bag" and "she saw it in the bag". I told himeither my Door Dash driver is chowing down on that sushi roll right now, or you're calling me a liar. "She" probably put it in another bag, of course, because I'm not a liar. The result was us having to go pick up that missing sushi roll ourselves, which defeats the purpose of that expensive Door Dash charge. Nah, not going back. Sushi was alright, guy on the phone was not. After reading the response, we are still never going back. As first timers, how were we to realize one roll was a super crunch and the other a mt Fuji roll, when both look similarly thrown together? We expected the two super crunches to be in one container. As would anyone. And what's in a mt Fuji? Tuna and salmon. It's a damn miracle that the person who is allergic to salmon (as noted on the order) did eat the real super crunch roll and not the mt. Fuji. Total disaster.

A bunch of rolls at Sushi 101

It's only been nine years since I visited Sushi 101 as my 12th review ever so I'm back for a much needed update. Early evening with my wife and my daughter, we had a terrific meal and the restaurant was not very busy at all. A huge plate of sushi with basil rolls to start (aka summer rolls but with fresh basil inside) and we killed it. They have a bunch of the usual maki rolls and some creative ones. My wife didn't care for the spicy chicken katsu roll but I thought it was good. She still loves the Passion Roll, which is complete with sliced mango. All of it, nicely presented and well assembled. Perfect for sharing with a small party. No, there's no more smoking in restaurants and there hasn't been for a while. This shopping plaza is always challenging for parking. Good luck.

Great sushi! Me and my family are sushi connoisseurs, and have been going here for years. NeChicken Fried Ricever had a complaint about any of the locations!

I haven't been here in a few years. My friend likes Sushi and was wanting to try out this place near to where she lives. It's in a strip mall behind Total Wine near the corner of Park Rd. and Woodlawn. I used to come here for their simple sushi rolls because they are at such a good price. Tonight I decided to try their fancier rolls. I've never had a cooked sush roll before, so I decided to try the Queens Roll. All the fish inside was cooked before it was rolled. I don't like mayo or eel sauce so I asked for it without. It was extremely dry since the fish was already cooked. Soy sauce didn't help and honestly I don't think eel or mayo sauce would have helped either. The Lava Roll was strange. It had chunks of minced crab mixed with mayo and siracha then it tasted almost baked on top of the roll. Since I really don't like mayo much, I didn't really care for this either. The flavor also overwhelmed the roll itself. Maybe if it had alot less mayo ? The star of the night was the Professor Roll. I substituted avocado for cream cheese. The crab salad on top was fantastic and the fish and roll tasted so fresh. My friend let me try a bite of her sauteed beef with udon noodles. The beef was cooked absolutely perfectly. It was tender and juicy. To me, the flavors of the noodles and vegetables were just ok. She also got the veggie tempura appetizer. Instead of each veggie individually fried, they were fried in clumps together. It was good and different seeing it this way. The service here is outstanding. Our waitress was very attentive and another guy also checked on us regularly. The atmosphere is extremely casual. We came on a Tuesday and domestic beer was only $1.50. They even had Yuengling at that special price. They have nightly drink specials posted at the bar. Nice stop for sushi. I'd recommend staying with their simple rolls or the Professor Roll. The raw fish is tastier.

I found this place on Yelp because I was in the mood for a sushi roll. When I walked in I got a bad vibe, me and the gentleman who greeted me were never able to get on the same page. I don't know if he was the owner or not but I all I wanted was a shrimp tempura sushi roll. I told him that and I end up getting the appetizer. I was pissed. I ate it but I was pissed, it was good too but I got a bad vibe while I was in there and then combine that with my order being wrong equals I won't be back. I'll post a pic of the shrimp.

Sashimi sampler of the top left, vegetable tempura roll in the middle, Sir Justin roll on the bottom right. All solid choices.

Before our valiant return to Sushi 101 last week, it must have been at least 5-years since my last visit. Oddly enough, not much has changed. They're still doing decent sushi at a decent price. Can you find better sushi in Charlotte? Absolutely! Can you find cheaper sushi in Charlotte. Eh, probably. (Mr. Tokyo and your beautiful AYCE menu, I'm looking at you!) We started with the gyoza which was the low point of the evening. I think they were microwaved. Pretty flavorless and super greasy. Luckily, the sushi redeemed the place. We ordered the tempura vegetable maki and it brought back all kinds of memories. I got my sushi training wheels at this place -- scared of real fish, I started with the vegetable rolls and spicy chicken katsu maki when I was in college and felt peer pressured to like sushi. The roll tasted exactly as I remembered it! We also had the Sir Justin roll, topped with delicious poke and sashimi sampler. This girl isn't afraid of raw fish anymore! Service was attentive, bordering on rushed. The decor hasn't changed in years, which makes the restaurant feel a little dated. All in all, not an awful spot and I'd stop in again if I found myself craving sushi while near Park Road. But, I certainly wouldn't make a special trip just for Sushi 101. I'd pass way too many other great sushi spots (Koishi, Namastay, Sushi Guru, Baku, etc.) along the way!

Leftover teriyaki sauce on broccoli and onion plate. You'd think I ordered teriyaki chicken with rice for that much sauce!

This was my first time here for lunch and I was pretty disappointed. From the outside it was hard to determine if it was open or not. The windows are tinted and there was a white sheet of paper on the door (later to see that it was for a "now hiring staff" sign). The staff is really nice but the service was excruciatingly slow. I reviewed the menu and was looking for something like hibachi salmon. The prices on the items are all one price. They do not have any lunch prices or separate lunch menu. I saw that they have two salmon (hibachi like dishes) but they were $18.95 so I did not go for those. I saw that they had a yakitori menu (a la carte) where you can order protein and veggies for $4. I ordered salmon yakitori, broccoli yakitori and onion yakitori (mind you, the price for the onion is $4). I ordered all of these items to be grilled. I also ordered the miso soup ($2.95) as an appetizer. The soup was ok. I received my meal; the broccoli and onions were served on the same plate and the onions were in big rings and really hard to cut through. The veggies were also drowning in teriyaki sauce which made the veggies incredibly too sweet. The salmon came as 4 small pieces on a skewer in teriyaki sauce and it was not thoroughly cooked. I informed the server and he ordered me another one that was well done without the teriyaki sauce. He came back later to let me know he took it off the bill. I waited for about 15 minutes. At this point I was about 45 minutes into this lunch. I asked another server about it and he did not even go check on my item. He ran to the back of the restaurant and proceeded back to the front of the restaurant without acknowledging me. The new salmon skewer came after I had already finished all of the broccoli. I asked the server for a box and for the bill and saw on the bill that he charged me for the new salmon skewer. I asked just to confirm if this was meant to be on the bill and he said that he took off the uncooked salmon but charged me for the new one (which I was not informed of when he came to let me know it was taken off the bill). While I understand they are in process of hiring new servers, the servers that do work there need to do better. Don't really recommend for lunch. Will see about giving it a shot for dinner one day.

South Park roll. Crab salad, shrimp and cucumber.

A good sushi spot tucked away in the back of a shopping center. Stopped in to check out this sushi spot, and I was not disappointed. I sat down at the bar area and was greeted promptly, and the bartender was quite nice. I read some complaints about service here, but she was top notch. Ordered the cucumber salad and the South Park maki roll. The cucumber salad was fresh and delicious, but definitely enough for two or three people to have as an appetizer. The portion was huge. The South Park roll was also fresh and flavorful, definitely something I would order again. Overall, a decent spot for sushi that I will definitely venture back to again.

The explanation about the charge for uneaten all-you-can-eat sushi that guests want to take home was particularly helpful. Knowing the rules upfront makes all the difference and sets the right expectations from the start. The food was excellent. We worked our way through several rolls , sampled dumplings , and didn't find a miss among them. So his choice was here. Google directions suck they took us around the back to the parking garage for the 2nd level and since we have never been here before it took us a few minutes to figure out how to get down to the first level. When we entered there was a waiter taking an order and no one else on the floor so we had a little bit to get seated even though there were only two other parties in the restaurant. We were able to sit wherever we wanted so I sat with a view of the screen with the replay of the Brazil FIFA game on. My husband wanted the unagi don but didn't order because the price seemed high. The table next to us all ordered bowls and the serving size was huge so my husband regretted it. We order takoyaki, spicy wings, and 3 rolls Godzilla, Hadouken, and Master Roshi. The wings had amazing flavor but were not spicy. Takoyaki was flavorful and the perfect temperature. I get a lot of takoyaki that is entirely too hot and have to crack them open to cool before eating them. My husband did not enjoy the Godzilla roll he said the topping was too much and didn't add to the flavor. But enjoyed the other two. I enjoyed all three rolls the flavor was fresh and very little need for soy sauce fine without it. If we are ever in Charlotte with time to eat I would stop here again.

We started off with the empanadas and I ordered my first virgin "pinny yolada" :). The empanadas were mind blowing! They were nice and hot, flavorful, and absolutely a delight! We were so impressed, we decided to order the double fried wings afterwards. The wings were good and had an interested flavor with the tamarind. After the wonderful appetizers, it was time for the entrees. I ordered the short rib yuca gnocchi and my friend the arroz con pollo. On paper the gnocchi sounded sublime, but in actuality it was lacking a lot. The entire dish lacked so much flavor, even with hot sauce, additional salt, and lime it tasted bland. I was very disappointed. The empanadas and service were a saving grace, I ordered two orders of empanadas to go for my family. However they were so expensive. I paid $14 for 3.
