This place was weird. The waitress was kind of rude. The miso soup was good but I'm spoiled by Sushi-Ya's complimentary Miso Soup that I was less than pleased when I had to pay, even though it was only $1.50. They didn't have a great selection of entrees. Menu kind of janky looking all ratty. They sat us at probably the worst table ever even though there were many tables open, the enclosed seating looked kind of cool... The sushi was okay, good for an easy craving fix, as far as the dining in a restaurant feel.. meh. Probably will only return if i have a hankering for sushi and want to get take out. We took a trip over to Sushi21 and for the first time I enjoyed eating sushi. The staff is very polite and its rarely ever crowded. Very clean atmosphere and service is very quick and attentive. The food here is good and honestly pretty common as far as Japanese food goes. The highlight was the Dragon Roll, it was really good and not overpowering like other Sushi places. However the Shrimp Tempura tasted fine but had too much batter for my taste. I love sushi! I have had some of the best sushi in the world. So, let us get the quick and easy part out of the way. The server was pleasant, helpful and pretty attentive although I was the only one in the place [which had sirens in my head go off] so I had to wonder why he never came by to fill my water glass. I can not believe this place got 3 1/2 stars from the reviewers here. Even if they do not have much experience with sushi or even food in general. Have you had supermarket sushi from a box? This is worse. The sushi "chef" prepared my sushi in the manner a first time sushi maker would. The rice was dry and the texture was that of old left over refrigerated rice, awful! I had some nigiri [raw sliced fish over vinegared rice], such as fresh salmon and a couple with eel. The eel and the salmon in themselves were fair. I also had some maki sushi [rolled with rice and seaweed]. I could not believe how poorly prepared the maki sushi was and poorly presented to me. The rice around the filling was separating, ragged and rough looking. The filling was a very small amount. The maki as a whole was tasteless. The soy sauce that was at the table was a must to use if you wanted any flavor but then all there was for flavor was the soy sauce itself. Since we are on the subject the soy brand they used Kikkoman was less than average in taste and a bit heavy in texture. One of the maki rolls I had was called maki sake; the sake roll,Oh-my-goodness; in this case BADNESS!!. Not just tasteless, INEDIBLE! The appearance looked like they scraped the bottom of a garbage disposal and the textures could gag a maggot. I also had the dragon roll and spider roll. If you have ever been to a sushi restaurant and had these you know how nicely filled they are and how very decorative they are on the outside. Not at this place. They have a touch of mayo and that is it. Very disappointing and unsatisfactory! The size of the nigiri sushi was passable, but the size of the sushi maki was ridiculously small. Because of this the amount on the plate they gave me I could not believe that the plate of sushi I received was my order. Sushi 21 is substandard and a regrettable waste of too much money! I used to not like sushi. Then my bf convinced me to go to Sushi 21. It's excellent! So far, it's the only sushi that I like. My favorite is the Asparagus Roll. I also recommend the yellow radishes as an appetizer. I guess they are pretty standard, but they are tasty. The staff is always friendly and the restaurant is clean. It isn't fancy, but I like the decor. We go here pretty often and will continue to do so. read more

This place has amazingly good-tasting sushi. True, it's not the most affordable place to eat, but you get what you pay for. If you want cheaper sushi rolls drenched in enough fat sauce to make the quality of fish unimportant (I'm guilty of sometimes craving these), then this probably isn't the place for you. This is for a nicer night out for good quality sushi. The service is great too. The waiters are attentive, but don't mistake their shyness for rudeness! My friend wanted to order a coke to go, which most restaurants don't allow you to do. But our waiter came over somewhat embarrassed and gave us a Styrofoam soup container, apologizing and saying that it was the closest thing they had to a "to-go" cup. We had a pretty good laugh over that and my friend happily left the restaurant with a container of soda. I recommend the sashimi platters and tofu side dish. If you want to splurge, try the uni and plum wine. Again, not the most affordable, but do you really want to risk getting cheap sashimi (with no rice or sauce to mask the taste)? And I liked the décor. They have huge authentic-looking fans and screen prints on the walls. Stark but gorgeous! read more

Saturday lunch for two The Good: + Friendly service + Clean but dated dining room (This was our fave sushi place in the late 90's when we were high school. When we left for college, our group of friends would occassionally meet here whenever we were all home from college. We decided to come here again to reminisce and eat good sushi (or so we thought). The restaurant interior never changed in the 13 or so yrs.) The Bad: - Poor sushi quality. What happened? This place used to be good. The "crunch" used in our sushi tasted and looked like pre-packaged chips. Avocado was not its fresh green color. It was almost black. Salmon was not its fresh pink color. It was dark pink, close to brown. I was hoping we wouldn't get food poisoning after our lunch here. (We didn't, thankfully!) - OUR CHECK WAS PADDED! I am not sure if this was an honest mistake or it was done deliberately. For 4 sushi rolls and a soda, our bill came up to $40. I was surprised so I double checked our receipt. 2 sushi orders that were supposed to be $6.50, were charged as $8.50. One sushi roll we ordered, the price was not listed in the menu so I could not dispute those. However, I would not have been suprised if that was padded as well. We notified the waiter and he apologized and corrected our receipt. We appreciated the apology and the correction of our receipt. However, this experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Came here for an early dinner, for the food that we got the price is a little expensive (factoring in quality of the food).we ordered an unagi roll and Dragon roll, it was good sushi, but I could get better somewhere else. Then I got the beef don, and she got the sukiyaki. They both were a little overly sweet, and I like sweet, we switched cuz the sukiyaki was way too sweet for my fiance. I couldn't finish it nor did I want to bring it home. And the service was subpar. There was literally one other table in there, of 4 people, but our waitress came by only like 3 times total with some good time in between those visits, so I can only imagine what's it like when it's busy. read more

My family loves coming here for sishi &maki. More often I am getting take out once a week. When my wife has a craving for Kapa maki I call up and by the time I get there 6 minutes later food is usually ready. They have a great selection of traditional sushi. I travel a lot for work and this little hole in the wall joint is at the top. I am glad it is close by to me. Always drive by it on my way to work, and finally decided to venture in for dinner. I ordered the Mixture Combination. The nigiri tuna was so dry that I could feel the texture in my mouth...I immediately thought of a cat's tongue. The rice in the rolls was overcooked. This is my husbands and mine FAVORTIE sushi place. I found it one evening on a lark after searching my navagation system for sushi place. There Spicy Tuni Rolls are AMAZING!!!!! We recently moved farther away (now near Gurnee), but we still drive down to get sushi from here. No other place as seemed to beat there spicy tuna rolls. I went there for dinner this evening and my car was towed while parked outside of this sushi bar. I dropped my kids off at toys r us so they could purchase each other gifts before eating. I walked over to get them and bring them back to eat and within 10 minutes my car was gone. I have been eating here for the last 10 years. The food is average but it is convienient. There was no sign facing my car telling me i could not leave the lot for even a minute despite being a customer at sushi 21. I was left stranded with 2 kids that did not have coats. There were 4 other patrons stranded. This will cost me $288 to get my car back. I was upset and asked for rhe manager. An elderly man that did not speak good english dismissed me. Two other women took my number but said there was nothing they can do. The sushi is clearly not worth this and i will never patron here again. read more

My wife and I were Christmas shopping in the area because of the perfect grouping of stores around this restaurant. We don't know the area very well so we didn't know where to eat. We both love sushi but are sushi snobs, so I was apprehensive to eat here to start. I checked Yelp, it had decent but not stellar reviews - so we took the risk. We walked in and it was dead on a Saturday night at 8. Not a good sign. We forged forward. Ordered the staple of Edamame, Seaweed Salad and Agedashi Tofu to start. The Edamame came it literally had 10-15 sorry looking pea pods on a dish for 3.95. What? I asked the waitress is that all? She said, yes. My wife ordered a glass of white wine for 4.95 and it was the smallest pour I've ever seen. We're not off to a good start. The seaweed salad tasted rubbery and the Agedashi was just OK. So, we ordered a bunch of rolls and nigiri. The rolls themselves were not bad but the pieces of fish they gave us for the nigiri were weak. No wonder this place was dead on a Saturday night. Their prices were not cheap and their portions and quality were lame. I guess lesson learned that sushi in the suburbs does not match the Naniwa, Sushi Samba experience in the City. Nicely decorated with a relaxing atmosphere. Service was decent and courteous. Where it lacked was the quality and quantity for its price. You can easily can find better quality for all you can eat closer to the city. The food wasn't spoiled or bad by any means. It just lacked freshness and flavor. They were also running low on appetizers so we had to reorder. As neighboring competitors open, I wouldn't be surprised if natural selection slowly runs this business down to its final years unless they adapt with new innovations. read more

we went there last night, the food was good, but the service was terrible, the place wasn't particularly packed for a friday night, i'd say it was about 60% full, but it took forever for them to take our order and then to bring it to the table it took around 45 mins. they apologized for the time it took, but it was unacceptable to me. they never brought water to us, we didn't ask for it, but it is expected that the first thing they bring is water for everyone. the bathroom was disgusting, is in disrepair, with furniture and boxes stacked inside, and to me, if the bathroom is that bad, (which the customers visit) I cannot imagine the kitchen. I will not comeback to this place. this was our second, and last visit, and I went there thinking that the last time wasn't great, I confirmed my feelings. try other places. read more

I went there a couple of time in the past few weeks in hopes that it would be some hidden gem. Well, it's pretty average for a sushi joint. The first time I went there I wanted to try their lunch box special, so I ordered the salmon teriyaki, the salmon tasted off like it had been frozen, if you can imagine a store bought Van DeKamp's salmon patty then that was it. The sides were so scant, they had some odd dehydrated faux crab mess that had more chew than flavor, the side salad was flavorless & nondescript and the miso soup seemed watered down. Mind you it was busy in there so the next week I decided to give it another chance. I figured maybe these people are on to something so I went with sushi and I wasn't disappointed, the salmon was fresh and I had gotten a tuna maki & a cooked spicy scallop maki (their version of the dynamite) and it was really yummy. In sum, I would go back there only for sushi. I should mention I bought these ala carte I only remember the scallop maki being over $6. read more

I used to work in the northwest suburbs and was looking for a good sushi place to satisfy the intense craving I get every once in awhile. One of my co-workers took me to Sushi 21 and I've been hooked ever since. I've tried many other sushi places in the suburbs and in the city of Chicago and Sushi 21 outdoes them all by leaps and bounds. The spicy tuna rolls are absolutely divinely delicious! The shrimp tempura is so temptatiously tasty. The Hollywood and Las Vegas rolls are mega magnificent--but every maki roll and nigiri I've had has been finger-licking good (asparagus, dragon, spider, unagi, etc.). The fish is always fresh and the wasabi is always extra hot! It's a great place to go if you're new to sushi and want a large selection of cooked sushi. But it's just as good, if not better, for you hardcore raw sushi eaters too. The place is the bomb! read more

First off I ordered California roll and waited 25 min with the place only having 3 customers. Then I watched the guy serving the soup or salad and one came back. Well I personally saw him take out a hair out something like that out of the bowl with his h hands and gave it back to the customer to eat. Which had no idea what happened because they sat behind a little wall. Then after 25min I finally got my roll and Bill!!!!! The California roll was only $4.50 my Bill came out to $8.30! Since I added cream cheese to the roll they charged me extra $3 almost as much as the roll it self. What a waste of money and the roll was not that great! I go to down town for sushi and never pay$3 for cream cheese. I will never go back my first and last time. read more
