We always have a good time at Sushi Ai, especially the downtown location. It was a little busy so there was a slight wait time. We went around the block to just walk around and eventually went to the Schnucks across the street to grab a few things. Even though there were probably 4 parties waiting ahead of us, our total wait time was maybe 15-20 mins. Our server was soooooo funny and thoughtful. 10/10 made our night. I accidentally got glutened (my mistake not theirs). Just know if you have any dietary restrictions, they actually will do everything they can to prevent it. I just forgot to tell them and I accidentally ordered something I didn't know had tempura flakes in it (it is marked with a little triangle). I did not get charged for it, but in this day and age with restaurant margins being so thin, please don't waste food. Anyways, the food was delicious. My friend got the sexy girl roll on top of our dinner. It's a "cooked" roll with torch glazed/fired steak on top of a tempura shrimp roll. Come for dinner just to have the option for white tuna nigiri. They just added new roll options, too for the AYCE sushi, since the last time we came here (about 4 months ago). I'm a regular at the Clayton location so this was my first time checking out the downtown spot. The space is a bit smaller in terms of seating but they make great use of it by going two stories which is pretty cool. The sushi kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant so you can watch everything happening. The menu looked the same as Clayton from what I could tell. The waitress was friendly and quick, perfect for all you can eat. They also honor a student discount and I believe Sundays they do a BOGO deal on the AYCE which is such a great value if you can time it right. The roll selection is solid and there's really nothing to complain about. Would definitely come back, if I'm already in the downtown area. read more

Ordered the Miso soup, shumai, and crab rangoons for appetizers. I ordered the St. Louis roll (fried), yamasa, and americandream. I also got a side of spicy mayo The miso soup was great. I haven't had a lot of soups with actual seaweed in them so it was a pleasant surprise. I would skip the shumai, they were small with a slimy consistency and no real shrimp taste which was disappointing. The crab rangoons were yummy! I enjoyed both the yamasa and American dream rolls, they had good flavor and were well balanced. The St. Louis roll was too cream cheese heavy and overpowered everything. The idea is good because the balance of crab and cream cheese pair well but there was little crab/crab flavor and overwhelming warm cream cheese coming out of the roll. Love love love all you can eat sushi. It's to die for. The Baked Salmon appetizer has crab meat in it and I wish they said that beforehand. Also the staff isn't friendly towards the homeless, which is understandable as a business owner, but nonetheless leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They are NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY and need to adjust their policy on serving food with children at the table. Date 6/26/26 5:00pm dinner time. Dad (me) and 5 yr old son. My first meal of the day and I just picked up my son from Summer Camp at the Zoo, so we both were super hungry. I asked for child menu, they do not have one. So I order from the menu for him per the servers instruction and the buffet for me. The server sees my request on the form and says, you made a mistake with your large order, it's too big . I said no it's not, it's what i want. We go to the restroom and when we return there are two of the miso soups on the table. No other items. My son gets excited so i offer him a few spoonfuls until his item is served. They next bring the veggie gyoza, and my son is still excited about what he sees. And I ask him if he wants to try a bite. He does and OUT OF NOWHERE the server states," You can't share your buffet with your child," I stated that's fine but where is his plate and as a parent, Im not gonna eat in front of my children, when he is hungry. I gonna share from my plate. And they were very aggressive and insensitive to this situation. I did not like the way, they handled that, so I requested to speak to the manager and i told her, that her policy is insensitive to families. I also asked why didn't she serve the item I ordered for the my son early with the appetizers if she has a problem of him taking less than 4 bits of soup and gyoza. I also stated that i can afford to pay for whatever we choose to do. She literally questions my ability to govern my child and my parenting method, indicating that he should just wait until his food gets here and for me not share what they served first. As if i do not have control of my son. I got internally mad at her insinuations. I then told her that you obviously thought i was attemping to cheat them out of few dollars because you first said my order was too big and then you overly scrutinize my table and swoop down like a hawk because i shared 4 bites of food with my son. While she and I are speaking my son grabs a piece of sushi from my plate to eat and the manager throws a fit. I said, he is a child and you are gonna scorn us for sharing a bite or two, then I do not want to stay here to eat and to give me a check for me to finish our meal at home. I also stated, I followed their pathway and ordered a dish for my son separate from my order. I stated this is a child not another adult, I had zero intentions of stealing from them. They made me feel like i was deliberately attemtping to cheat them out of a few sushi bites because i shared with a 5 yr old kid who weighs just under 40lbs. Did i violate their buffet policy, possibly but with good reason. One, they served the adult items before the children meal. Most parents understand. Two, they wanna give me fire and brimstone about a policy that literally costs less than $10 that i can afford to pay out of my pocket. So what my son takes a few bites, in your policy i have to pay $.50 a piece of leftover units that are uneaten. Three, i've patronized this company for over 12 years and Im very aware of their policies regarding the buffet. But they used a very poor use of judgement and forced me into an impossible position of addressing a hungry child, without serving their plate, to making me feel like a low life because I gave a few bites to my son. Very insensitive to families and the solution would be to simply serve the childrens items first and stop expecting children to understand your policy. Or putting other parents in my position to feel ashamed about what happened. My son expressed confusion as to why were leaving and why the staff in dictating what he (my son) can eat off of whoevers plate. Long are the days when common sense is applied before gnashing of teeth about $0.50 policy. Not worth the argument, serve the children first and this will probably never have to be addressed again. I will never spend a dime there again after that humilation caused by them and my son's bewilderment to what we did wrong and why they were disturbing us. My appetite for Friday not was ruined and this situation was boiled down to me sharing 4 bites of food with my son. Not a good look Sushi AI, do better with families and handle them with respect. Sushi AI is 100% my go-to spot for lunch. It honestly is the best bang-for-your-buck in St. Louis. Lunch AYCE is 15, and dinner is 25 (if I remember correctly). The dinner AYCE has extra rolls/sushi available, but I always go for lunch and I personally find it has everything I need when craving sushi. Regardless of the price point, the sushi is all very high quality and delicious. I added photos of my personal favorites.
