This place was beyond fantastic, the chefs were extremely knowledgeable and it turned out our sushi chef was from where we were! It was a wonderful and unexpected touch! The service was remarkable! It was my birthday so we got a bottle of the sparkling sake to share and it did not let us down! Then there was a custom menu for my birthday with Happy Birthday Lauren printed on it! That was a great surprise! The ambiance was intimate and perfect! There were only 14 people in the room which made it feel really special! The menu was displayed behind the chefs so we k ew what we were eating. Each chef would announce what they were serving by saying "excuse the interruption but this is..." the sushi pieces were sized perfectly and they were divine! This experience was unlike any other omakase I have been to, including Japan! This was an experience I will cherish and never forget! The pricing was what you would expect. Be sure to pay for 3 hours of parking because there was a group of girls who paid for an hour and a half and got a boot on their car! But I cannot recommend this place enough! I will be back when their menu changes! Thank you sooo much!

So I have been wanting to come to this new location since I used to go to the old one when it was on the east side at a house. Definitely still a great experience. This one was way more food though and I will say higher price, but totally worth it. When you walk in the hosts greets you and is very nice and they take you to this little waiting area with a welcome cocktail, which was delicious. From there, they let you know when your table or actually your seat is available in the other room to get your Omakase experience. It is very small in there and only about 6 to 8 people going at once. Make sure you go hungry. I know it doesn't look like the pieces are big but it really is a lot of food. It was a 18 course of Maca experience. When you're in there, it's great to know where everything is coming from how it's sourced and the way they prepare it for you in front. It's just amazing. Also the chefs were so nice and knowledgeable is awesome. When it comes to cocktails, you do have a waiter and they're also catering to you making sure if you need a refill on your wine or another cocktail or anything like that. Definitely did not disappoint and would go back again.

I loved the concept and execution of this omakase. It stayed true to tradition while incorporating subtle flavors that enhanced the sushi rather than overpowering it. The uni was the most memorable. It was clean, briny, and tasting like the ocean. The welcome drink was delicious with a lightly toasted aftertaste. The ambiance was cozy and traditional, and there's a bar next to the omakase counter with a great selection of Japanese drinks that's worth visiting before or after. Logistics: We arrived about 15 minutes late due to traffic and were still seated, but I recommend leaving earlier during rush hour. Parking is available at the Second Street Garage (no validation).

Came here for omakase and we loved it!!! I love how intimate it is you really get to know the chefs and what they create really well. We loved all the courses but wish there was more food for the price

Such a fun omakase place. The itamae (sushi chef) described all the food great and also had great conversations while preparing dishes. It started off shy and quiet with all of strangers but as food flowed with the wines or sake to match everyone was talking and joking. It is expensive but a great way to spend a bday dinner. Loved the exclusive vibes when you enter.

An incredible omakase experience from start to finish. Sushi Bar Austin delivers some of the freshest, highest-quality fish I've had, with every course beautifully prepared and full of flavor. The chefs were knowledgeable, engaging, and made the experience feel personal and fun. Each piece was perfectly balanced, creative, and showcased amazing attention to detail. The intimate setting adds to the overall vibe, making it feel special from the moment you walk in. Easily one of the best dining experiences in Austin and absolutely worth it.

What a wonderful solo dinner with good food and service! Experiencing international flavors with international fish was exceptional. I had a few mock tails to pair with the courses but they offer an array of different drinking options and something for everyone. It's a new location, so I liked the colors and area it was in. Nice bar and Lounge area connected to each other as well. The piece that grabbed my attention was the Uni course. With a crispy nori shell and uni and Ikura together. The flavors paired well. They offer extra courses to revisit at the end of the experience if time permits. So you can have a second round of something or a mystery piece from the chef. Would definitely be back to try a new menu!

Modern-style omakase was done well overall. The welcome cocktail (chai sake) was delicious! It was a good experience to try new ingredients paired with different fish. For some pieces, personal preference is less lemon juice or sourness. I love the unique ginger/ seaweed/ cucumber mix for palate cleansing. The uni piece was really unique with the deep-fried seaweed, but I wish the shiso leaf wasn't as strong so I could actually taste the uni. Overall, glad I got to experience this meal! Parking on the street or there's a garage nearby (~$25 for 3 hours).

Took myself on a solo date to Sushi Bar and it was such a great experience. The 17 courses included dessert and you had the option to add on premium toppings as well like truffle, etc. When you first walk in, it's quite dim, giving speakeasy vibes and you're able to wait in a waiting area and given a cocktail. Then you're led into the actual dining room and seated in front of the chefs. The chefs were super nice and personable and made conversation throughout the night which really helped my introverted self. The food was amazing, and you could tell the chefs knew what they were doing and talking about. There is a small parking lot but doubting my ability to get out of it, I decided to street park instead. Overall, great service, great food, great experience. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to splurge on some omakase!

Looking for an experience like no other, or possibly just a new take on your palette. They have you covered! There are so many flavorful ideas created by the artists behind the bar. Ryan was smooth and entertaining throughout the night! You feel apart of the show as they progress through the list of amazing bites. The bar is really cool and quick to give you and your friends the opportunity to try some amazing cocktails. Great service!

Raquel P.

The sushi omakase experience is fantastic. My favorite pieces were the hotate and unagi, both so filling and flavorful. The service was great, with our drink server being on top of it. The ambience is intimate. Definitely not cheap, but worth it for a romantic night out.

Sushi bar is by far where I had the best meal in 2023! If you are a sushi lover like myself then this is the place for you. The whole experience from beginning to end was so well thought out. They start you off with a welcome drink that you take into the waiting area. After which you are guided to a small room with only 10 seats in a chef's table vibe. We got to see how each nigiri was made and I loved how they explained what we were eating and how we should eat it. I especially loved how they were able to accommodate my shellfish allergy by substituting so they get 5 stars in my book. Definitely a special occasion type of experience but so very worth it!

I've never tried Omakase before, so this was my first "dip of the toe" into this experience. My friend and I found some mid-week reservations, so we immediately booked. When we arrived, there is no sign what-so-ever. You just have to know it's the white house with some graphics on it. One of the things I noticed was the parking is also non-existent here. There is ample side street parking, but you'll likely have to walk a bit. When we arrived, we received a welcome cocktail. I really enjoyed it along with the seating area. It's a super well-positioned area in relation to the dinner area. At check-in, they'll give you add-ons. For this dinner, I only added the foie gras on. I loved the structure of the meal along with the information about where the fish is from, what they've added and any additional pieces. The chefs were super engaging and kept us taken care of the entire session. I ordered two cocktails and while I don't remember their names, I do remember that I liked them... ALOT. Especially the pineapple one. I HIGHLY recommend this place. While I don't have another Omakase to compare it to, I know this one will be enjoyable.

Ask the Community - Sushi Bar

I plan on going tonight for my girlfriends and I anniversary do I need a reservation or can I just show up?

You need a reservation. You can find them on Tock but it appears they are all booked up. They book up a month in advance sometimes. I listed for the waitlist for a few dates and was able to secure a reservation after waiting a week or so.

My husband & I are going here tonight. Weird question I know but should we wear more formal clothes? We've never been but have heard wonderful reviews.

You can wear whatever you want! It's Austin!

There are 6 seats. My boyfriend and I had such a fun, personal experience. The staff were incredible--warm, engaging, and genuinely excited to guide us through each course. The food itself was delicious, beautifully crafted, and felt customized in a way that made the night feel unique to us. It's the kind of omakase that doesn't take itself too seriously while still delivering seriously good dishes. I also highly recommend the sake and cocktail pairing. The bartender customizes it based on your preferences. I told her my favorite drink is an espresso martini and she made this really fun espresso, strawberry latte concoction. There is also a special house sake with an homage to the owner's cat. I love those personal details. It's always a great time at Toshokan, and I'll definitely be back again. Nice, quaint chefs counter space inside and I believe the idea is to give a traditional Japanese local restaurant feel so the space is designed to just be big enough. This used to be a bedroom when the building was a hostel. I was pleasantly surprised when Nicole, upon checking me in remember who I was and welcomed me back. Not only that the chef did as well! They are both amazing and so full of knowledge. After being sat they go through several things about the history, items in the restaurant, and then drink service is offered and the meal begins. You get to select the chop stick holder and chop sticks you'd like to use. I asked, they have at least a dozen I believe different chop stick holder options. They also do s personalized wood coaster with your name burnt into it. The selections were amazing with each one having a unique flavor that melted in your mouth. I added the sake and cocktail pairing which Nicole does amazing. I let her know I still kept the origami crane she last time was still on my counter at home. They are toooo damn cut to just throw away. I mean look at them! Anybody during the service they are interactive with everyone engaging in different conversations.
