Incredible experience! We made a reservation about a month ago for 7:15pm on a Wednesday night. We came a little early to enjoy a welcome cocktail and to it in their front room. The cocktail was a watermelon basil sake. Super fresh and yummy! At around 7:30, we were seating in the back room. There were 12 couples and we each had a place card with our name. The experience is out of this world. You can choose to do a pairing or order drinks al a carte. My fiancé and I went with just a beer and glass of wine. 17 bites including desert were made by hand and were absolutely incredible. Every single bite made my taste buds and belly happy. Favorites were the King Salmon, Tartare unagi and bluefin taro. The dessert was shockingly fresh and not to sweet! I couldn't stop eating! The coconut and ice paired beautifully with the edible flowers. Overall I highly recommend making a reservation. Pro tip- if you book the later reservation, could can keep ordering al a carte since there is no one else coming after you. read more

Tucked away behind a small cafe is Sushi Bar! Like other omakases in Austin, I needed to book in advance on a certain day and it sells out in minutes! So I landed a very early dinner (5:00pm) with the boyfriend. Ambiance is very intimate. Wouldn't have expected the door behind the hostess to be our sushi bar! You get about 16 pieces and dessert for $125 per person. Optionally you can pair with wine or other drinks but we opted out. For the scallop they offered an optional $45 more for some shaved truffle on top. So the bill can definitely add up! While you do get 16 pieces, I find they are quite bite sized. Usually at other places it takes me maybe 2-3 bites for sushi, but here it was easy to eat in one bite here. My boyfriend was still hungry after the whole experience which took about 2 hours or so. I had such a beautiful birthday dinner here last night with three of my friends. Snagging reservations goes quickly a month in advance so you need to be at a computer on their reservations page at noon on the 1st of every month to get one for the following month. When I booked, reservations didn't open right at noon but I think 15-30 minutes after, when it became a crazy free for all. Finding a reservation for 2 is the easiest, but anything more gets more difficult. I ended up getting a regular reservation for 2 ($25 deposit each, goes towards $125 omakase price), and then another premium experience reservation for 2 ($300 omakase price each) through Chase Sapphire's dining portal, which when I looked appeared to reserve a spot per day or seating. The premium experience comes with 2 additional bites and 6 premium sake pairings. We were instructed to arrive 20 minutes early to enjoy a welcome drink, as they don't seat late. It is a small refreshing yuzu sake cocktail so you can finish rather quickly but I'd say to make sure to get there at least 10 minutes before so you're not rushed with traffic or rideshares. The standard omakase experience is robust on its own with 16 pieces of sushi, and a dessert course. Every piece of sushi is eaten with your hands, and seasoned and sauced so you aren't served any wasabi or soy sauce. Everything we had was delicious. One of our party said maybe one was not to his liking but the rest of us enjoyed every bite. Each of us even had a different favorite piece of the night. One loved the nostalgic mustard sauce on the Russian Whelk, another loved the richness that bone marrow gave the Unagi (eel), while I kept thinking about how well they treated the simplicity of the humble Akami (lean tuna). The sake pairings were done so well, and paired very well with the flavor notes. Even though they come filled to the brim in small sake cups, we had enough to share with our other two friends so they could try a sip with the sushi pairings. The dessert was also a chef's dessert - tart, texture, not overly sweet, and a great palate cleanser and end to the meal. I've tried a lot of omakase experiences around the country and Japan, and this was definitely in the top five. Everything was well seasoned, the bites playful and nostalgic while still honoring the fish. We already want to come back. I'm not sure if I'd do the premium experience again unless someone else was paying, but it was great to try once with our sake pairings that could be enjoyed with my group of four and the ease in getting a reservation through that premium reserved slot. read more

We are huge fans of omakase sushi experiences and were so excited for our reservation to Sushi Bar ATX. We had tried unsuccessfully to get reservations for months so when we finally got one, we were PUMPED. Here's the pros: 1. Intimate seating - the room itself limits the number of diners and definitely creates and exclusive atmosphere 2. The drinks - for us, the upgraded sake pairing experience was the HIGHLIGHT of the night. The selection of sake was amazing (we loved the sparkling sake opener) and our server made fantastic pairings and cocktail recommendations throughout the meal 3. The dessert course - we've never had great dessert omakase rounds before and this one was actually very good The cons: 1. The price - the experience is no joke, a HUGE amount of money. Our two person dinner (including the upgraded sake pairing and optional upcharges of truffles one course and two additional bites at the end) was $1000 (this did include the tip). They aren't shy about the price (we knew up front it'd be a $1k meal) but we expected more at this price point 2. The bites themselves were good but they weren't MIND BLOWING. We left the evening feeling like it was good but it was no where near what we had hyped it up to be or what we'd read from other attendees. We honestly left saying that our previous omakase at Okoto on south Congress (a 1/4 of the price) was better. I decided to wait for the rush to die down before trying out this omakase. A friend got me the reservation 2 months in advance. It didn't turn out as I had hoped as far as the taste of the fish (the service was great). I was disappointed the fish was dressed in a lot of matcha salt and other garnishes that overpowered the fish. The amount of food vs the price was fair. Probably not because of cost -- Classy place for dinner, really try to give you a 5-star experience, but I feel at the end of the day it was over hyped. The experience is cool you are sitting and chatting with the 3 chefs as they curate each piece of sushi. The quality is great but I wish the didn't torch so many pieces. I'd say over half the bites were torched - not really that traditional raw delicious sushi. The sushi is very much fusion and they have fun with teriyaki, cinnamon, everything bagel seasoning etc. everything was delicious, and at the end you can add on a few more chef choices for $20-$30. Recommend you do since these were the best. End price was $750 + tip for 2 people including the basic alcohol pairing. The wine/sake pairing was very good. The end cost of the dinner though feels over priced- for $900 you can fly 2 people to Japan round trip and experience authentic omakase for $45 a person in Tokyo. Locally barley swine is about $350-400 for 2 people and equally tasty. Makes the experience seem not worth the cost, but probably one of the best experiences you'll get for sushi in Texas. Eastside omakase spot with more modern, fusion twists on sushi. Omakase reservations in Austin are always a hot commodity, and when my friend and her partner couldn't make their reservation, I gladly accepted their spots and brought my coworker. As a bit of a preamble, I've been to many similar concepts (both in and out of Austin), and my rating reflects how this group stacks up relative to others in the area after considering many different factors. For the record: it's hard to go wrong with omakase, and I have not been to an omakase restaurant in Austin that isn't a great experience. This spot is located in Bento Picnic--a Japanese spot located on E Cesar Chavez. Upon entering and checking in with the host, we were escorted to the bar area of Bento Picnic and were offered signature cocktails to enjoy while we waited to be seated for dinner. Eventually we were seated in preassigned seats along the sushi bar and the experience was underway. I opted for the optional courses and the additional special toppings for several of the servings, which were an added cost. Throughout the evening, the offerings here used traditional nigiri as a template and then used different less-traditional ingredients to add a modern/fusion take. As with most fusion omakase, some of these inventions were better than others--however, each course was at least "very tasty," with a few being truly outstanding. As is the case with omakase, the group you are seated with can determine your experience--as well as your interactions with the chef(s)--and this was a really fun night with some really nice folks. Overall, this was a really great experience. So with that, why I am giving this place only 4 stars? As I mentioned previously, I couldn't help but benchmark this place to other top omakase spots in the city and I would say that overall it stacks up above average against the stiff competition. Couple that with a bill that was notably higher than the other options (including a few I personally prefer) and you get 4 stars. This is probably one of the best sushi spots in austin, especially for omakase. However the price point is pretty steep and you're definitely paying a premium for it (would not be a 5 star in other places like california or new york close to the water). That being said there is also a 22% gratuity included to watch out for. The service is good but i thought that was pretty high. When you come in they give you a welcome drink which was not my favorite and quite sour but good for prepping your taste palate. The food- the sushi itself was very good. The fish was super fresh and out of the 16 pieces i'd say with the exception of about two i liked most of it. The botan ebi- i was not a fan of the strawberry gochujang. The mackarels were actually mind blowing, and my favorites included the uni and the lean tuna. The foie gras is one addition i would definitely recommend though. For drinks- we ordered the hojicha cocktail and it was amazing. You could really taste the roasted green tea in it. I've been dying to try this place for a long time and finally decided to go for it. The food was absolutely amazing as expected. Every dish felt so fresh and each one had such a unique flavor. It's so hard to choose a favorite but a couple stood out even more. The kanpachi was incredible. I forget the name but there was one that had a peach flavor and another that had a hint of spice. The flavor was so unexpected in the most amazing way. Incredible food is expected here but what really took the experience to the next level was the service. Starting with hostess being so welcoming and also that delicious welcoming cocktail. I really appreciated her showing the upgrade items, including their pricing, ahead of time so you know exactly what you're ordering. The chefs were incredibly knowledgeable but also SO friendly. They made conversations with everyone and also shared personal experiences. Even though those dinning were strangers to each other, it immediately changed as we were all chatting and felt like a dinner with 8 friends. A friend treated me to a 17-course Omakase at Sushi Bar ATX and it was one of my favorite Omakase experiences. First off, they recognized my birthday on my name placard which was a sweet touch but also, everything was perfect! It was $145 per person and included desserts but we also paid extra for a 7-course sake pairing. Getting reservations are a bit of a hassle because you need to make reservations at noon on the first day of the month for spots you get the following month (I.e on Dec 1 at noon, seats open for January) AND it's only 10 spots for each seating time so it can get competitive. That said, if you don't mind staying up late, get the last seating! They tend to take their time more AND give out as much left over sushi as the guests want - if you manage to still be hungry. There are two chefs, who alternate making the courses. My favorite experience was watching one of use a blowtorch to melt bone marrow over some of the nigiri. Close second was eating everything by hand. Absolutely worth the pricing, I would go again and I highly recommend it! ***PS: this is a late post and I've noticed that they currently have more seatings with a higher price point so you will feel rushed if you go for any of the earlier seatings. What a GEM! My husband took me on a surprise date so I had no idea where we were going. We are both sushi lovers and I have to say WOW! First off, the ambiance was so amazing. You walk into an unassuming but very charming entry kindly greeted by the host. We waited on the other side of the curtain which lead to the chef's table and it felt mysterious and exciting like we were about to enter a room at the Magic Castle in Hollywood (if you've ever been). The Food: Every bite melted in your mouth. The presentation, the flavors and quality were all outstanding. We had 17 courses and it was more than enough. Although, because of the unique experience, I could've stayed for the next seating just because it was such a pleasant experience and the sushi chefs were so lovely. I'd say overall this was a very fun and memorable omakase experience. The sushi really was wonderful, and while I'm usually into very basic nigiri, I enjoyed the chefs creative take and the interesting flavor profiles they created. I lived on the west coast for many years, and my usual sushi spot is the amazing hole in the wall that doesn't look like much but delivers. This place is pretty much the opposite of that: as soon as we walked in we could tell it would be fancy and bespoke and expensive, and it was all these things, but regardless, the sushi was wonderful. Now sushi is never cheap, and I've had a handful of other omakase experiences that were comparable in price and maybe not quite as good. I've had sushi that was this good for a fraction of the price, although not in Austin, but I've been away for awhile and there are probably some new gems waiting to be discovered. I definitely muttered an expletive when I saw the bill, but for a very special occasion (like an anniversary, engagement, etc) it's worth it. My husband and I enjoyed not making any decisions and having food handed to us like we were babies since there were not any chopsticks. The service was really great and we had fun chatting with all the chefs and servers. Our reservation was the last sitting and we didn't feel at all rushed, which others have mentioned. We had the basic omakase and we both got the basic sake pairing. Just a warning - the sake pours were HUGE! I was expecting the pairings to be in tiny little cups, but these pours were 3x that. The sparkling sake was soooo good, I've never had anything like it. Needless to say, we were both a little toasted when we left. I've seen others say the opposite, so was it because of our late night reservation? Or do Texans just expect huge sake pours? We may never know, and because of the price point, I'm not sure we'll ever return. The nigiri are about half the size of traditional nigiri. Tiny! If they were regular sized, I think it'd be a fulfilling meal. The flavors are truly unique, exceptional, and prove their creator's genius. Not a fan of the creative downsizing of the pieces. One of my dining-out peeves are high dollar prix fixe that don't leave you full, which is the fundamental purpose of a meal! $150 per person for 16 pieces of nigiri and dessert course. Extra nigiri features cost between $13-26 per piece for toppings like foie gras or caviar. Sake pairing is extra too, but my husband and I are cheap dates so the complimentary cocktail did the trick. The fish truly did not disappoint. But first, to get reservations! You can book a month out, they open reservations a month ahead at noon. Go to their website and set your alarm. I swear the website said $125 but we were charged $149 per person. Maybe their prices went up in that month. So it's inside Bento Box. You park in the area, go up the ramp and check in. You're given a drink and encouraged to come 15 min ahead of your reservation. We did the 9:30 on Chinese New Year. The cocktail was a watermelon sake, I am allergic to watermelon so the hostess made me a pineapple sake. Thank you! When it's time, you're ushered into the door, find your name and take your seat. The warm towel is to be used throughout the night to wipe your fingers. The chefs put each piece in front of you on a nice wooden laced with something else coaster. You have ginger to cleanse your palate between bites. I was surprised that each cup of sake we ordered a la carte was around $20. There is an option to add a sake pairing for $120 or so...We got 2 more pieces of nigiri after the 16 piece course and that's $20-30 a piece. You do not have to, and I felt pretty full after the 16-pieces but wanted to be topped off. The a la carte pieces are the chefs' opportunity to get creative. I have to say I enjoyed those a little bit more if not the same as the menu pieces! It's an intimate space and I had plenty of light to take my photos. I would say my favorites were the aji, toro, wagyu, unagi, and uni (from the US, Maine?) I enjoyed the dessert. It was ice cream with strawberry compote and coconut shaved ice and some flower petals. Presentation was amazing. The chefs worked seamlessly. There was an art to the placement on our coasters and it was almost a ritual how the three of them would serve at the same time when the middle chef nodded or provided the first pieces to the folks sitting in the middle. Obviously it's expensive, but after going two days in a row, I must say, I probably can never eat cheap sushi ever again. This is the best sushi I've had in Austin and probably in my life (still haven't been to Japan yet). The bone marrow, three tuna pieces, the smoked albacore, madai, and yellowtail were personal favorites. We were taken care of by Devin and it was amazing to see the intricacy of his craft. All three chefs interacted frequently with guests and created a very lively environment. If you're lucky enough to get a reservation here, then you're in for one of the best sushi experiences in Austin and possibly all of Texas. This place is tucked away with no sign. It's located in the back of Bento Picnic. Once you enter, you'll check in at the back of the restaurant and you'll get a complimentary beverage. The staff and service is top notch and you immediately feel like a VIP. Before you arrive, you will have the opportunity to let the staff know any dietary preferences you have. Once it's time to be seated, you'll be ushered into an intimate room in the back that seats 10 people. The intimate setting also allows you to get to strike up conversation with your neighbors and adds to the overall experience as well. Just don't be one of those people that talk while the chefs are trying to introduce their next piece! I won't go into too many specifics of the food as it changes night to night and part of the experience is being surprised by the meal. To sum it up though, you'll get 16 bites of nigiri and then at the end they may offer some extra pieces for a price if there's time. It is obvious that the chefs put in an incredible amount of thought and care into each piece of fish offered. The pieces are not large so if you have an appetite, don't expect to leave stuffed. The joy in Sushi Bar really comes from experiencing the creative ways that the chefs prepare your meal. I found myself constantly surprised at the variety of different flavor profiles in each bite that should not work but simply do. Also, If you're offered any additions with your meal, take them! This is not a cheap experience. Even without the alcohol pairing, you can expect likely over $300 per person. When we pulled up, the restaurant did not say Sushi Bar, so we were a little confused, but once we entered, we were ushered into a small intimate private room in the back. I had been trying for months to get a reservation and I finally received an email with availability so I was very excited. I have tried almost every omakase experience in Austin and so far, not a single one has disappointed me. I appreciated that they waited for the chatter to die down before explaining the preparation of each piece of fish. With the exception of 1 piece of fish every bite was amazing. I also loved talking to the guy that was tatted up in cool black and white koi fish tattoos. My husband and I are hoping to go skiing around Christmas in Aspen and they are opening up a sushi bar there called Madame Sushi. He also gave us tips on a few places around Aspen and I really appreciated that. I highly recommend Sushi Bar ATX and I will definitely be back. read more

We booked this experience wayyyy back in January when the incredible pop-up came to Austin in order to stay alive and escape the California lockdown. After 2 long months of watching Sushi|Bar's Instagram stories and dreaming of sushi our time had arrived. We walked up to the door on the backside of Bento Picnic to the speakeasy style sushi bar. The host greeted us at the front with a delicious welcome drink and told us to wait in the dining room to be seated. The previous dinner service was still finishing up. We were called to sit down at our assigned seat with 3 other couples and all were eagerly awaiting this meal. There were 3 sushi chefs as well as a bartender who was providing cocktails, beers, and sake with the service. To add on to the omakase experience you could add various sake pairings. I opted for an a la cart sake tasting and our bartender had great recommendations. In front of me at the bar stood one sake glass, one water glass, one slate, and one box of pickled cucumbers. Instead of using ginger to clean and cleanse your palate they used deliciously prepared cucumbers. The chefs are constantly monitoring the cucumbers and your drinks, refilling them constantly. From start to finish each piece of sushi was placed on your dinner slate and described with elaborate details. Every new sake was also introduced in the same manner. Piece by piece we made it further into heaven as we ascended on this whimsical sushi ride. I couldn't complain about one thing I ate, nor could I critique it. Everything was original with a unique spin. Delicious across the board and will definitely be back here again.....If we can get a reservation. read more

Best sushi experience I've had. Intimate. Delicious. Tasty. Servers were personable and you got to talk with the people making your food. It was fun to get to talk to other guests. The setting was perfect and felt like I was attending a secret event. I loved every bit. If you can fork out the cash, I highly recommend you do so. read more

This was one of the best omakases I've had. It's not the traditional sushi omakase. The flavors are more pronounced. The sushi rice was unique and was sweeter and had more flavors than typical omakases. The sushi pieces were all delicious, buttery, and perfectly cured. My favorites were the madai, oh toro, bone marrow, yellowtail, and the escolar. I love that they torched multiple pieces. read more
