This was an incredible omakase experience, right up there with some of the best sushi I've had in LA. The experience was intimate and special, with the team carefully explaining each piece and the inspiration behind its creation. I do think that it is a little bit over priced, but considering the location and lack of comparable joints in Austin, still very much worth it for a special occasion. We had the best time at Sushi Bar! If you are struggling to find reservations, try the morning of as sometimes they release open spots. We lucked out and got a same day reservation with the sake pairing. The sake pairing is a lot so be prepared for a heavy evening of drinking. After months of trying I finally scored a reservation, thanks to being on the waiting list. After moving to the Hill Country from Los Angeles, we are really missing sushi. This place did NOT disappoint. We loved the intimate "Tiki Bar" setting. There are 10 guests with 5 amazing humans making the experience memorable. There are 3 chefs, and on our night 2 gentlemen helping, pouring Saki, getting you what you need. Everyone seemed quite knowledgeable about the Saki, and the meal. The omakasi experience consists of 16 servings plus desert (so 17). When you check in they give you the opportunity to opt in for some upgrades (fois gras, black truffle, caviar) which we did. And it was wonderful. At the end, they give you the opportunity to purchase 3 more, which we did. We thought they were delicious. So, look, it's pricey. We were extremely happy with our experience and fully intend to return. It's not your traditional sushi bar. So if you're looking for tradition, this isn't that. And we LOVED it. Though pricey, it wasn't stuffy or pretentious. The flavors were huge, the fish was fresh, the A5 Wagyu melts in your mouth. Here's a tip we were given at another sushi place recently: when you eat your nigiri, place it upside down on your tongue so that all the flavored area hits your tongue instead of the rice. This is far more than a meal, it's an experience. 10 people sit at the sushi bar in three seatings per night. Reservations are a must as there are no walk-ins available. There are no menus only a 17 course omakase experience with menus thst apparently vary nightly depending on what ingredients are available. Two chefs prepare each bite in front of you explaining the ingredients and preparation. Each bite was near sushi perfection for me. Traditional fish was served nigiri style with creative complimentary ingredients added for non-traditional flavors. Flavors became richer and more intense as the evening went on. We shared the premium wine pairing which was perfectly matched to the fish and featured a number of very unique labels. I can't say enough good things about the meal. But buyer beware it isn't cheap. Once we added a few bites at the end and shared the wine pairing it was very expensive, but it was absolutely worth it! We reserved the final seating of the night which gave us extra time at the end of the meal to relax and chat with the sushi chefs and awesome somellier. Reservations open on the first of the previous month. I recommend making them as early as possible. read more

We had a great experience with the chefs and would recommend to anyone looking to experience the tasting. The courses were delicious, well thought out, and the best tasting I've had. The waiter was incredibly knowledgeable on wines/sake pairings if you didn't do the sake pairing with the tasting and wanted to pace it out. I am eager to go back with friends in the coming months. We unfortunately had some pretty rude table mates that would make jabs and extremely rude comments at other patrons at the table, during the entire seating. By the ending it was exhausting and honestly I was irritated. We all got it, you are from London, lived in NY, and just "visiting" Austin for the "weirdness." Normally I'd say something and probably get myself into trouble but in such an intimate setting I decided that I'd let them be the "stars" of the room and I just let it go. However my husband and I weren't the only ones who noticed their rudeness. Hey a pop up sushi place that might stay forever! If it does this cali staple will be a great addition to austin. Disregarding a certain celebrity's comments, their omakase is top notch. I wouldn't go in expecting super traditional or "uchi" type fusion either, they definitely have their own style which you really just have to go try. If you need a general idea, check out their IG account. All I can say is that personally I thought it earned its 5 star rating 100%. Worth the price, and all staff was awesome to interact with, even staying well past closing time to keep the sushi party going. Reservations can be a little difficult if you're not used to tock but communication is great and the big rush is dying down, it's nice to see a little more sushi on the east side ever since qui/kuneho (another he shall not be named) left. I have to agree with most of the other reviews. If you have never had omakase, you will love this place. If you order rolls like the lion king roll... You will love this place. If you like traditional sushi and particular Nigri, you will be disappointed with this place. The atmosphere is cool, the chefs are cool to talk to, but the quality and portions of the food are mediocre for the price. For $600 for two I expected Otoko level food. Uchi, uchiko, lucky robot, neighborhood sushi....all have better sushi. I get that for 16 courses you need to be creative, but I had to scrape off a lot of toppings that were put on the sushi. The cuts were pretty small, and overall I just kept thinking "I should have went back to Otoko". If this omakase was $300 for 2 people it would be 4 stars. Soto south has a great omakase you can get for $350 for two, and has much better sushi. read more

It was about $400 pp with the optional wine pairing (which I recommend). We opted out of the add ons. I think they added truffle and caviar to certain bites. I didn't feel like we missed out. This has got to to be my favorite dining experience I've had in Austin. I've been here a year and have eaten in some good spots, but the level of service, quality of the food and overall experience here take the cake. You're in a small room with 10 seats - very intimate and by the end of it you're in a room full of friends. Especially if you get the booze pairing. Now because of of the booze I can't remember the exact details of each dish, but I do remember the feeling of having my socks knocked off after every bite. Flavors I've never seen while eating sushi, beautiful construction, truly genius level stuff, I will definitely be back. There was a lot left to be desired here. The shortcomings made the higher price tag unjustifiable, unfortunately. The ambiance was quite nice but the seating was tight, the chefs (admittedly) had very little sushi experience, and the bites were not as good as other places in the city. The pre-dinner cocktail was awkward as it was seemingly unexpected by them and they put us in the cafe attached to the restaurant. Everyone enters and exits the small space through the same cramped area, giving a very impersonal and factory-like experience. It felt sloppily thrown together taking advantage of Austin's more elite-like customers to slap some fish on a plate and forget about the actual experience quality. It all started with the race to get a reservation, you have to be quick and have fast fingers to get in when they release time slots! Then when you go it's speakeasy style hidden behind a back door! There's seating all around the sushi bar just for ten and it's the most intimate experience with the chef creating everything right in front of you. The chefs are so knowledgeable about all of the fish and the flavors they create. They even provide a cocktail to start and finish and since my husband and I don't drink alcohol, they accommodated with the best mocktails for us. Some of my favorite bites were the king salmon, butter fish and torched ribeye. Can I go back?! Intimate 16 course omakase experience. Reservations are required. Reservations open up on the 1st of every month at noon and sells out within minutes; be sure to set a reminder if you'd like to get a reservation. The location itself is inside Bento Picnic. There is a small lot behind Bento Picnic or street parking. Upon entering, walk towards the back and a host will greet you, check you in, and offer a complimentary sake cocktail to start. Once everyone arrives, you the host brings you into a small room with assigned seating for 10. There were three chefs hosting us that evening. The sushi has more of a modern take. The chefs used blow torches for several dishes. All 16 courses were enjoyable and excellent sushi, though for the price, I wouldn't say it's anything mind blowing. The pieces are very bite sized. They host did also upswell guests on caviar, truffle, and foie val prior to the seating. We opted for all 3 upgrades, which the chef explained to us which pieces had the upgrades. I would say they all paired well with the sushi. Once completing the 16 courses, the chefs offered up to an additional 3 pieces to purchase if you'd still like more sushi. We opted for 2 more pieces, as I did lot find it to be too filling. Following this, dessert consisting of ice cream topped with shaved ice and toasted coconut was brought out. Overall, a good omakase experience, though can be very pricey with the added upgrades, and sake pairings. When you spend an absurd amount of money on dinner you expect to get your moneys worth. 18 bites of dinner. That's what you get for the price. The bites were good. Sushi Bar ATX is the Austin location of Chef Phillip Frankland Lee's bar concept restaurants. It started as a pop-up here during the pandemic and it seems they have decided to stick around for a while for now. For fusiony/Americanized kappo-style sushi dining this hits all of the right points in terms of atmosphere, entertainment, interaction with the chefs, sake pours, and tasty bites. But the rice is terrible. The cooks go through great lengths to let you know how they source and make from scratch all of the condiments and sauces but for some reason when asked about the rice they had no details or real passion for the rice choice, the cooking of it, the seasoning, and the pack of it, so the undercooked and inconsistent grains showed their glaring oversight for what I think is the most important part of sushi. For serious sushi enthusiasts, ignore the shari. Drink the sake and you will have a fantastic time. Most all of the offerings were a flavor bomb with a few pieces that sounded better than they tasted. But there were some unique items on the menu that may be hard to find on sushi menus in Austin like the whelk, and the tri-colored tuna -- a single slice from the tail end of the tuna that includes the otoro, chutoro, and the akami all in one -- (but is only offered to you AFTER you order all of the additional a la carte/off-menu pieces which makes your bill outrageously high). For this price, I'd like to see more attention given on the cook of the rice but again this is not traditional sushi and the focus seems to be more about the neta and flavorful toppings and combinations. I'd like to give this 3.5 stars but we can't do halfs so I have to round down for the terrible rice paired with the high prices. read more

Overall, great omakase experience! My only complaint is the price for the two omakase experiences. You have two options: (1) $125 for the omakase experience and (2) $300 for the omakase exclusive experience. We opted for the omakase exclusive experience. This price included the $125 omakase experience, $110 sake pairing, plus 2 additional pieces of nigiri for an extra $65. Honestly, I'm not sure why the exclusive experience cost so much more from the regular omakase experience. We had to pay extra for the additional sake pairing for the two pieces of nigiri. TBH and... IMO, it was definitely not worth paying an extra $65 more for the two pieces. If I were to go back, I'd just do the regular omakase experience. read more

I planned a birthday dinner here for my boyfriend. I got food poisoning from lunch earlier in the day and when we were only 3 courses into the 17 course dinner, I ended up getting sick and we had to leave. I was charged over $400 for the dinner and sake pairing when we each had one drink and 3 pieces of nigiri. I tried calling and sent an email the following day to see if there was any chance some of the cost could be given back as a credit for us and we could come back next opening, however I never heard back. I tried calling again the following day and sent a text message and still no response. I understand that maybe there isn't anything they are willing to do but I would appreciate a response at the least. read more
