This place is always busy in the evening time for dinner and on weekends. If you get on the Yelp waitlist, you will at least get an idea of how long the wait is. FYI it is quite loud inside, but you can still hold a conversation with your friends and family. Staff was friendly, but when they're very busy, you can have a hard time flagging them down. Food wise, I love the Alhambra roll perfectly warm and freshly made. The Yasai Ramen had plenty of veggies which is great, broth was ok, and noodles are great! Besides the consistent, absolutely delicious food that is always served, I have to give credit for the clean and sanitary environment and most of all, the staff are always so polite and courteous. Great place and delicious food. Love the rolls. Specifically the spd and the rainbow roll. If ordered for takeout, make sure you give them plenty of time or you may be waiting awhile. I'd recommend dining in to avoid the long wait for takeout during the weekend. I was told 30 minutes. I ordered at 8:00pm but order wasn't ready until 9:05 PM. Absolutely DELICIOUS rolls. I have to say that I'm surprised that I'm enjoying the mackerel bento lunch plate so much at the sushi cafe. I think I've had it the last three times I've been here in the past year and have enjoyed it each time. Mackerel is a strong tasting oily fish that has to be prepared "right", or the taste can go terribly wrong. I'm happy to report that the fish her as The Sushi Cafe prepares is very much to my tastes. Sushi Cafe has been around a long time in this area and they seem to have a solid fan base. Tucked away in a small strip mall, there is an impressive amount of seating in what seems to be a small space. Also, speaking of space, there is extra parking in the back behind the strip mall if you're struggling to find spots. The sushi is all fresh and wonderful. We love Sa, the chef behind the sushi bar on most days. We have followed him to multiple sushi restaurants, but it seems like he'll be here for a while. If you're ever feeling adventurous, just sit with him and let him feed you - trust. While I cannot tell you most of the items he laid down in front of us, I can tell you that everything was delicious. I think we did have a sashimi platter over ice and it was just as delicious as it was a beautiful presentation. The bento boxes are also quite good for those who tag along with the sushi lovers! Sushi cafe has my daughter's favorite sushi roll, the crunchy roll, at my favorite price during their happy hour! Sushi cafe's happy hour menu has not only rolls, but a number of appetizers and small plates at great prices (please see the photo for the menu). There has not been a wait to be seated during happy hour and service has been friendly and prompt. There is a bar area to be seated in or a number of tables. There was adequate parking in the lot. The crunchy roll was delicious as usual. A complimentary cucumber salad/ sunonono was served. I enjoyed the calamari, but wished the portion was a little bigger! I went to Sushi Cafe for the first time yesterday with friends for Happy Hour. I've heard great things about their food so I was excited to try it. I ordered from the Happy Hour Menu as I wanted to try a little bit of everything. The pork spare ribs were tasty and tender. The Dragon Roll was perfect with very fresh fish. The Pepperfin was fresh and yummy with a good portion of Jalapeños. I tried a bite of my friend's pork Ramen and it was good. Another friend had the Veggie Ramen and was not pleased but I didn't try it so I can't confirm that it tasted "off". The ambiance was lively (around 5pm) but not too loud. The bathrooms were clean and well attended. The place itself is cute and well decorated. It's a casual atmosphere but still great for a date night. The service was efficient and friendly. We were in the area and decided to come here since they have happy hour (M-F 2:30pm-5:30pm). There was a good variety of items on the happy hour menu. We weren't too hungry, so we just ordered a roll and two small dishes. I didn't expect cream cheese in the chef's special roll- pass. I enjoyed the spicy calamari and grilled salmon kama. The calamari was crispy and the kama was meaty. If you're looking for quality rolls, then maybe happy hour isn't the way to go. The happy hour menu is a good value though. read more

This location is great because it's so close to the Zoo, Funderland and Fairytale Town. The food is really good (we always get the chicken teriyaki, gyoza and chirashi, as well as some rolls) and service is always done with a smile and super friendly staff. But what really got to me today was that there were 2 young girls (maybe 10 or 12 yrs who clearly live nearby) who were reading books and having lunch. They were short $5 to pay their bill. They asked to use the phone to call their mom to come pay the difference, but a nice woman sitting next to them gave them the money to pay the bill. Rather than take the money, the Sushi Cafe staff adjusted the girls' bill so that the cash they had covered it, AND so they could give the money back to the generous patron. THAT ladies and gentlemen is customer service. With margins slim as they are at restaurants and in this economy, it was refreshing to see staff treat the girls and their patrons with dignity and respect. We love their other location in midtown-not sure if it's the same owners? But both locations have always impressed me with their kindness to their patrons. Came in on a Tuesday around 5:30pm. Our server was kind and helpful as we had some dietary adjustments that we needed to make. Our group of four ordered three rolls, veggie tempura appetizer and a dinner with chicken katsu. The roll I got was the land park roll minus the masago. It was well made and tasted fresh. The miso soup was good. The chicken katsu was a nice portion but the batter was more of a crispy tempura not the traditional katsu coating. The tempura was well cooked and crispy - not oily. The veggie assortment was also great: asparagus, carrot, potato, onion, pumpkin and broccoli. The restaurant was clean. I've been coming to this spot for At least 3 decades , and it never disappoints. While I absolutely love the Alhambra location -- it might even be my favorite -- I've recently moved back to Land Park area and find myself drawn to this original spot again. One of the main reasons? Chef Sai. Chef Sai originally started here, moved to the Alhambra location, and now he's back -- and whenever he's working, I always sit at the sushi bar. He's incredibly talented, not just in preparing sushi but also in entertaining guests. If it's not too busy, he'll do little impromptu "shows" like slicing a cucumber into a flower behind his back. It's wild, and just adds to the charm. My go-to is our custom roll he makes for us: scallops inside and out, with cucumber, topped with Meyer lemon, masago, and a mix of house sauces and mixed it up with jalapeño or other fun stuff ... It's always absolutely phenomenal -- he nails it every time. While I usually rave about the barbecued albacore at the Alhambra location, I recently ordered it here and, honestly, it was the best version I've ever had. Sadly it had less salad on the side, but the flavor? Perfectly smoky and rich. Truly memorable. Also love the new lobster roll, but I don't like it spicy as they normally make it. I order it sweet and it's fabulous. One of my favorite things about this location is the happy hour. They serve surprisingly good wine for just $5 -- and not in cheap glasses either, but really nice ones. The short rib is probably one of the most incredible small appetizer dishes I've ever eaten, hands down. The Mango Tango roll (just $11.99) is a fantastic deal and bursting with flavor. Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Sushi Cafe! It looks small and unassuming on the outside, but inside is very modern with a great ambiance. They've been around for 30+ years but looks like they've undergone a remodel sometime. My friend and I split their $40 mystery box and a $10 shrimp tempura appetizer and it was the perfect size for us to share as we weren't too hungry. I was amazed at how much I liked their tuna sashimi! Such a smooth and fresh texture. Also their tempura is DIVINE! The batter is perfectly light and crispy. Definitely one of the better tempuras I've had. Service was nice and friendly, however when they got busy they weren't able to drop off the check. I received a gift card for this place and we gave it a shot. We arrived around 7:30 on a Monday. Parking could be a hassle on a busy night but thankfully the night we went we were able to park close by. We were seated immediately but our booth was dirty. It had tons of rice on the seats and floor as well as dirty balled up napkins under the table. The woman who sat us scurried off so quickly we just swept the rice on the seat onto the floor with the rest of the garbage under our table. We were given a complementary cucumber refresher which we really enjoyed and ordered a full order of it as an appetizer. We also got edamame, spicy bbq albacore, deep fried Cali roll and the MVR roll. Edamame were big pods but needed more salt. The spicy albacore was not spicy at all, it was very garlicky as it had huge chunks of garlic in it with minimal jalapeños. It was cooked ok, as the center was still raw as it should be but it was very fishy, more-so than normal. Both the Cali and MVR rolls were dry, no sauce on them whatsoever. Definitely needed a miso or spicy mayo sauce. Overall, we weren't too impressed. With so many sushi options, this place probably won't be on our list of return spots. read more

We had a gathering of HS friends here because they can handle 10 people in one seating. We made reservations for 4:30 to take advantage of their happy hour. I ordered the chicken teriyaki with meso soup and a sweet potato . My chicken has a good bbq taste and was medium cooked . Soup was delicious and my sweet potato was baked and tasted great. My friend ordered a crunchy roll and he said it was prepared well and tasted delicious. Their service was Johnny on the spot. The bento box we received was very small and nit good quality like the other location. There was nothing to indicate it was a lunch portion. I received 5 small strips of chicken. The tempura was miniature size veggies. The broccoli florets was literally cut in half. I will never order from this location. It's so unreasonable to charge $19 for that small amount of food. It was different from back then like it was larger than beforehand inside but in a good way. Nevertheless we got there for a later dinner than our usual. This totally hit the spot for her. My BIL had saba & katsu in his bento. He seemed satisfied since he finished his entire bento. Normally he has double sashimi but I guess he wanted a change. They do give you a cucumber salad dish to share but one isn't enough for four so we requested another. The service was just average. They seated us way in the back on the side. It was our daughter's birthday and she requested sushi cafe for our family dinner. We spent $160 for food and deliver. We had the absolute worst experience with this restaurant. We placed an order for three rolls, edamame, and three bento boxes through their website for delivery to our house. Half of our order was missing. Mistakes happen but how they handled it was disappointing and offensive.. I called the restaurant and the woman I spoke to told me she gave two bags to the driver and said they had made our order and that they would contact door dash. She could not get ahold of the driver. So once that was determined, she refused to fix the problem. She told us that we could re-purchase what we ordered and dispute the charges with DoorDash. In addition to that, two of the three bento boxes that were delivered had hair in them. Mistaken happen, but how this restaurant responded was absolutely atrocious. I even offered to go there to pick up the order that we were missing. I could live the hair and a mistake, but it is the attitude I received when trying to rectify a problem and get dinner for my daughter's birthday. Safe to say, we will NEVER go back to this restaurant and will not be recommending anyone go there until they have a discussion with staff on how to handle a mistake. read more

Overall summary: Tiny tiny rolls Sushi rice flavor was too strong 3rd time coming to sushi cafe, I ordered for pick up and we ordered 8 rolls, a Chirashi bowl, and a bento box. Had to wait about 5 min near the bar where other people's orders were being brought out. It was a busy night so the staff was pretty busy delivering Rios to the different tables. I saw at least 7 rolls come out of the kitchen and then saw the rolls of the people sitting at the bar. All different and all huge. But when I got home and opened our order, the rolls were as small as a quarter. Almost seemed like they were trying to make the rolls fit into the containers. I was Disappointed as it was my family's first time trying this place and they said the flavor did not compensate for the size and how much we paid for the order. Also unfortunately the sushi rice had too much of a vinegar flavor my brother in law was not able to eat it. (We order Japanese food 3x a week for dinner so this was not our first time trying sushi rice.) I will end this review on a good note in regards to the tuna sashimi. Delicious! read more

3.75 stars We have came here on and off for years. SALMON SALAD-- It is one of my raw fish type salads of all the salads I get from various Japanese restaurants. It has a slight breading or crust made of tasty nibbles like panko, and it gives the salad a fabulous crunch and carby taste that makes this salad even yummier to eat . The salmon is a good amount and it's served atop a sesame creaky type dressing. My Hubby gets this every time we come here and I will likely start, it's that good. If you like raw fish salad combos, give this one a try. SHIGOKU OYSTERS-- We got a dozen of these and I'm so glad I did. I usually eat Kumamotos and love them but gave these a try. They are more substantial and meatier than Kumamotos (these are small and buttery) but very good. Not fishy, served with a dot of Shiracha hot sauce, ponzu and lemon slices on the side. I would get this again. SABA SHIOYAKI-- it was a decent sized piece, not overpriced and nicely presented. The waitstaff assured me it was not dry and it still kind of was. Some parts weren't too bad but I won't likely get this again. Parking is limited, come early to get a spot and a seat.
