Stopped by for dinner on a Thursday night without a reservation, and thankfully, there was an open table for our party of two! The menu is very straightforward, and we just got to different sushi rolls: Sunflower ($20.95) and Caterpillar ($18.95). We actually both preferred the Caterpillar. I thought that the Sunflower was drowning a little bit too much sauce which masked the taste of some of the ingredients like the crab. I also wish that our dish had come with wasabi and ginger. Overall, not a bad place for sushi if you're in the area! The servers were also all very friendly.

Delicious, fresh sushi. Got the tuna, salmon and eel rolls. My favorite was the salmon as I was in the mood for something simple and light. My partner enjoyed the other two. We got the food delivered so cannot comment on the ambience or service.

So far i have found two sushi restaurants that I consider my favorite in the city. This is One of them! Great for a casual Wednesday dinner or a date night dinner before a night out in North Beach. Right around the corner from china town, few blocks from FiDi and North Beach, it's easily accessible from either side of town. The rolls are packed with flavor, quality ingredients. They have a creative fusion of umami with the right fish and sweet natural ingredients like mango. You get full kick of the sushi flavor you crave in every bite! You can't go wrong with any roll but my top are the sunflower, rainbow, 49er and of course, the lion king! Don't forget the shishito! A small detail I want to shout out is the wasabi! You can tell it's high quality pure wasabi. And you know what they say, 'how you do anything is how you do everything'. So if they give that much attention to quality of wasabi, you know the rest is equally great!

Amazing spot !! Amazing staff!! This was top notch super high quality sashimi!

Incredible staff- menu is the highest quality grades of sashimi. Delicious. Excellent miso soup. Incredibly calming atmosphere. My favorite is the lion king - I have tried many in the city and this is the best . Special attention is paid to sauces making the dish unique and delicious in different ways . Time was spent on these recipes. Highly recommend!!!

Decided to try out Sushi Chef with a group of friends after a long day running around the city! FYI this place is tiny!! They only have around 4 tables and then 6 or so seats at the sushi bar area. We did not make a reservation, but I would highly recommend doing so, especially if you have a larger party. There were 6 of us so we ended up waiting around 30 min for a table but I think we got lucky with timing. Onto what I ordered! Truffle hirame - sooooooo goood!! The sauce is insane . By the end of our meal we were all just dipping our other sushi rolls into the truffle sauce Not a single drop wasted! Duck breast ramen - the broth is rich, savory, umami, and smoky in the best way! The duck meat is also really juicy and not super fatty which is great. This is the perfect bowl of ramen to warm you up on a cold sf day. Spicy tuna roll - loved it! Basic but good no complaints here! Beef Tartare - my friend ordered this and he said he liked it! Toro special roll - honestly this one was not my favorite. I think whatever sweet sauce was used overpowers the flavors of everything else in the roll. I don't think I'd get this again. I didn't order this but the couple next to our table ordered the omakase which looked so good! I'd definitely come back to try that next time!

Located on the cusp of Chinatown and North Beach, this small Japanese restaurant is a hidden gem. With few seats, if possible would suggest calling ahead to get a spot at the counter which is the perfect spot to experience the omakase dinner. I would recommend getting the 10 piece set which offers a variety of high quality, handmade nigiri from bluefin otoro to hamachi, well worth the slightly higher price point. Additionally with the inclusion of mackerel to wagyu beef and uni with salmon roe and caviar, the omakase set provides a wide variety of fresh seafood to experience. Don't let the size or location fool you - Sushi Chef offers excellent sushi at a reasonable price that is as good if not better than many other spots in the city.

This place doesn't feel too busy, but that's moreso a reflection of the ambiance. It's a quieter spot with the tables fairly spreadout. We ordered the sashimi platter ($48), the fish is fresh with somewhat thicker cuts, and big portions. The sake menu is limited but has some tasty choices. Got some uni nigiri and scallop nigiri which were very delicious. The Toro roll that we ordered was an interesting combo of flavors but really grew on me after the first bite. Also, they use fresh wasabi here instead od horseradish! We were mostly left alone to chat and eat, and it was really easy to flag someone down for a little extra ginger. This kind of service works well for this type of place. Great spot and would visit again.

Overall really delicious sushi and ambiance for a reasonable price for the city. I've always walked past there and never dropped in due to the surrounding location but I'm glad I was introduced to it! Service was lovely and the ambiance was pleasant for a date night. It is a bit smaller, but we were able to get in around 8:45 on a Friday night. Will be back!

Went to the After Dark Show tonight. Since we were in the neighborhood we were looking for somewhere to eat and it was in the early transition time from lunch to just hitting dinner time. Walking by the happen to flip the sign that they were "open". We decided it would be good we were the first customers. Ambiance is great very clean inside. The food was super fresh and delicious, service was excellent. This place was really good and a great find

The ramen was rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. The tonkotsu broth was creamy and savory without feeling overly heavy, and the noodles had a great texture. The pork belly was tender, flavorful, and melted in my mouth, making every bite satisfying. The buns were soft, fluffy, and a great addition to the meal. The filling was flavorful and paired perfectly with the pillowy bun, making them an easy favorite. The karaage was also a standout. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned, it made for a great side to pair with the ramen. Service was friendly and efficient, and the staff kept things moving smoothly despite the restaurant being busy. The vibe is lively and energetic, with the feel of a popular ramen shop that's always buzzing with customers. It's casual, welcoming, and a great place to enjoy a comforting bowl of ramen. Overall, a fantastic spot for authentic tonkotsu ramen and delicious Japanese comfort food. I'd happily return whenever I'm craving a rich bowl of ramen.

Once we got closer to the front, the host came by to hand us menus so we knew what to order as soon as we were seated. The restaurant is pretty small so the dining experience feels a little hectic. If you're looking for a calm, relaxing place to eat, I wouldn't say this is the place. It's sort of an "in and out" situation. I ordered the spicy G.K.O. So so delicious. My only real complaint was the seating arrangement. My wife and I were seated at a shared counter-style table that was divided by a glass partition. While the partition provided some separation, I could still clearly see the people sitting directly across from us, along with all the eating noises and conversations. I personally prefer a little more privacy while dining, so that took away from the experience. I won't comment on the wait time because that's pretty normal for popular restaurants in San Francisco. The highlight of the meal was definitely the A5 Wagyu Ramen. It was absolutely delicious and worth ordering. The flavors were amazing, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting. Overall, the food was outstanding, and despite the seating arrangement, I would gladly return.

The wait for a table was 20 mins or we can share a large table with random people and be seated immediately. We were hungry. We went with the large shared table. Pleasantly, there was more than enough room. There were at least 1-2 seats in between the three groups on each side that were there- a solo diner, a small family of 3, and my group of 4. I ordered the Karaka Spicy, my bf ordered Akamaru Modern, his sister ordered Miso, and I don't remember what her friend got- I think it was also Karaka spicy. My bf and I ordered the Treasure plate on the side to share and a side of spicy paste because I know Japanese spicy is barely spicy (from someone who grew up eating SEA spicy). Karaka Spicy had a nicely balance tonkotsu mouth feel and pork flavor. Broth was a little salty. I was correct to assume that it wasn't spicy because I used half of the side of spicy paste and I still didn't think it was spicy enough. Chashu was cooked fine. Notes: - I wished I would've asked if they could swap the thin noodles for the thick ones. I love the chew thicker noodles provide. - Noodles were cooked al dente. Akamaru Modern tasted very similar to Karaka spicy without the spicy. My bf used the other half of the spicy paste as dip for his toppings. He enjoyed it. Miso was a lighter broth (obvi) with a good umami flavor and was not watered down. Solid. She loved it. I have never seen her finish a whole bowl of ramen before. There was a server in training that took our order with the help of the trainer- he did great. Staff was attentive with our waters. Bussers were also quick to notice and remove empty plates and bowls regularly making for an easy clean up after we leave and kept the shared table clutter free. Interior was modern, but casual. They had an expansive menu with vegetarian choices, sushi, buns, karage, etc. and a surprisingly large array of alcohol. I would def like to be back to try some drinks.

The ramen is served in large bowls, which looks impressive at first, but the actual portion of noodles and toppings felt underwhelming for the price. At that price point, I expected more both in quantity and flavor. We ordered the Dragon Tantan ramen, which the menu describes as spicy. It wasn't spicy at all. We asked our waiter if we could have a little more heat, and he nodded and brought over a tiny dipping-bowl-sized portion of some red paste with no explanation. There was no mention that it would cost extra. After finishing our meal, we were surprised to see a $5 charge on the bill for the "extra spice." We genuinely thought it was complimentary, and if it wasn't, that absolutely should have been communicated before serving it. The lack of transparency was disappointing and unnecessary. Overall: mid food, mid service, and not worth the price -- especially during such an exciting weekend in the city. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.
