They let us in without a reservation and they were just so attentive to everything we needed. The fish here is so fresh! And portions are good- not the smallest nor the biggest but definitely doesn't skimp out. We had for starters the sea bream carpaccio and the toro bites? Sea bream was fresh and firm, good bite to it and the yuzu and fish roe were so good with it! The toro bite thing came with two- was told to take it in one bite and it was absolutely delicious. Shiso leaf was so good with it! Two chirashi bowls - came with different kinds of fatty tuna, uni, tuna, salmon, sea bream, scallop, yellowtail - and some pickled items as well. Delicious! We also got a roll, I forget which it was but it had mostly Hamachi and it was on the sweet side but still a good 8/10 Lastly we got the Otoro nigiri, comes with two pieces and it just melted. My partner's good friend lives in this neighborhood and raves about Okoze. We've hung out in Russian Hill before and have fried a lot of restaurants before, but tonight was our first night eating at Okoze--and we should've come sooner! Around 6pm, we decided to skip a workout class (hey, SF is in a heat wave!) and go out for sushi instead. We called and made a reservation for 7pm. We walk over and first things first--love the atmosphere. The gate-like door is so bright and cute! Sushi--we loved the carpaccio appetizer and 3 rolls. We love sushi and eat a lot of it, and this fish tasted very fresh and better than most places. Prices seemed higher than most places, but so was the quality--so it's okay. Clientele included families, girls nights, date nights, and mixed friend groups. Service was wonderful. I write that in a few reviews but here, it was outstanding and attentive. Personable, quick, plenty of water refills (again--see heat wave so I was drinking!) The sushi chefs yelled out welcomes and goodbyes and have a nice nights when we entered and also when we left. I have been to a lot of fantastic sushi restaurants here in the US as well as Japan. This experience was one of the top 5 I have ever had. I came in alone, and right when they opened at 5:00. I was seated at the bar. The chef's behind the bar were very welcoming with a nice greeting and a traditional bow. I opted to order some of my favorites instead of omakase. I asked what they had in season and chose from that. The quality of everything including presentation, table service and selection of incredible seafood, was bar-none. In true Japanese fashion, the chef was aware of everything I was eating and how I was enjoying it. He made me a few special things based on what he saw I liked, which I really appreciated. I came to check out Okoze sushi since it had good reviews. I got the chirashi bowl on Saturday and it looked pretty fresh until after the restaurant I went back and had the worst food poisoning, still dealing with it right now and it is just Monday. The service was good, presentation of food was good, ambiance was ok but food waiting time was long. Overall, the food poisoning killed the whole experience. We finally pulled up to Okoze, and it's a 10/10!!!! The miso soup was a banger: hearty, umami, and a good amount of tofu and fried onions. If you are a fan of omakase, please check it out!! I just ordered the oh toro nigiri and the maguro, and it tasted very fresh. The fish melted in your mouth and it was buttttery. The spicy tuna is a classic and packed a flavorful bite. It's always great when you get real crab in your roll and that's what you got! In terms of service, we were the first two in there this evening and they delivered everything very promptly. Such an amazing hidden gem! I've walked by this place countless times and it looks pretty unsuspecting from the outside, but it finally drew me in. We were able to walk in and get a table for 2 around 6:30 on a Tuesday night, but I can imagine that wouldn't be the case on a weekend. The servers were very nice and attentive, and brought us edamame right away. It was hard to choose what to order- everything looked so good. We weren't too hungry so we settled on splitting two rolls, the Okoze Special Roll (figured we had to try it) and the Karai Maru-chan Roll. And OMG they were both so good. We left wishing we came when we were hungrier so we could try more of their menu items. The special rolls were a little bit on the pricier side, but you really do get what you pay for. Excellent sushi - definitely better than most and more authentic than most non-Japanese run sushi restaurants. Just so you know. I am always on the lookout for truly authentic Japanese food. Most are not, especially if not run by a native Japanese chef. Usually the flaws are that the fish is cut too large and too many sweet sauces and over sweetened dishes. This restaurant bucked that deplorable trend and served perfectly seasoned and plated dishes that I would have been proud to serve. I was raised by foodie Japanese American parents who were also excellent cooks. And.... Drum roll please... my test dishes are miso soup and tempura. Both were excellent. The miso soup had almost too much stuff in it. Most places give you microscopic cubes of tofu and a few scallions and seaweed. But this place put no seaweed but thinly sliced deep fried tofu skins (abura-age for those who speak Japanese). That is a trick that my relatives use. It brings a richness to the broth that is unbeatable. So if you want to eat miso soup the way my mom made it for company - try Okoze! The tempura had the lightest, least greasy, and flawless batter on it. Just like my parents used to make it, back in the day. Most places have me feeling queasy from all the oil but Okoze drains the tempura properly and uses very fresh oil. This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in SF. The best I have found yet! Went to get sushi in SF on a Sunday evening. It was hard to find parking but once we got to the restaurant we got seated within 2min. Food (5/5): I ordered the scallop tempura and the Moriawase (combo sashimi). The scallop tempura was just okay I would skip it next time. When the waitress gave us the sashimi she explained what each fish was. This is one of the best sashimi I have tried it was really soft and fresh. Service (3/5): The waitresses were nice but it took a long time for them to even give us water and when we tried calling them multiple times they wouldn't notice. So service wasn't attentive at all. Ambiance (4/5): The ambiance was nice there was a bar area where the people preparing the sushi were at. Initially, when I first tried the sashimi, I expected it to be a little softer and have a more "melt on your tongue" texture, but after adding soy sauce, it really helped elevate the taste. We went here because we didn't want to wait at elephant sushi and we knew it was good right at the door because the place was busy with locals even at the bar. The hot house sake is plentiful and much more affordable compared to the other fancy bottles so just go for it. I've been gatekeeping this spot for nearly 10 years... this is hands down my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. In a market that is saturated with tons of sushi spots, this has been my top for 12 years an counting. I always order a miso soup, some rolls, and nigiri. They execute everything to perfection. Be careful not to burn yourself on the miso soup though! You know a place is good and authentic if they are showcasing the fish and not dousing everything in eel sauce and spicy mayo. Amazing fish!!! We started with sashimi which was cut in thick pieces. Didn't quite melt in mouth with first piece but with soy sauce it was absolutely perfect. The roll was the star of the show. Kira Kira has salmon, avocado, hotate (scallops), tobiko, and unagi sauce. Salmon was again cut in thick pieces and the hotate was so so smooth. Unagi sauce is sweet. Everything absolutely melted. Food is pretty good. I have visited quite a few times and brought lots of friends to this business. However the last two times I was here I felt pretty uncomfortable. Despite all the empty seats around, the waitresses (especially the slightly older ones) rushed to get us out by 1. Taking our plates away even when they were not finished. I had to almost fight to keep my bowl so I can finish my rice. 2. Interrupting my friend and I and checking in pretty much every 5 minutes, indicating "order more or leave". Our dinners took regular amount of time and again, the restaurant was pretty empty both times. I wish they were not like this because I genuinely like their food. We were thrilled Okoze is open again for indoor dining. Recommend making a reservation as it can only accommodate a few tables. (No outdoor seating). We tried this place for the first time and I think it just might be the best sushi I've had since living in Japan. Everything was so fresh and delicious! The miso soup was hearty and savory, edamame perfectly salted and all the rolls melted in our mouths with bursts of flavors.
