We've been coming to this restaurant for 15 years. It was really good for a really long time. Lately the consistency has really gone down. The service is terrible. The food is still usually decent. Tonight they were out of absolutely everything, rice, noodles, miso soup, unagi. But they don't warn you when you order. Tonight they brought us all of our sushi bar items. I had ordered the bento box of sashimi and salmon Teriyaki, a hot dish. We finished all of our Sushi items and another server brought our bill and asked if he wanted anything else. We said no we just wanted the rest of my meal, because the salmon had not come out yet. He went and checked on it with the kitchen. He came back a couple times with the bill because they were busy and wanted our table, we kept asking for the food and he kept checking with the kitchen. Finally our actual server came over to the table and let us know she had no idea that we were missing food ( after all, she had not been back to our table all meal). After another long wait the salmon finally came out, cold (on what should be a hot iron skillet). And then they informed me there was no steamed rice. We asked them to take the meal off our bill. They insisted on charging us $11 for the Sashimi they had brought out that was supposed to be part of the $17 bento box, but of course we got no rice and no salmon. So you're telling me rice and salmon is only worth $6? It's 14.50 on the menu. Really the worst part of this experience is being treated like I came in there trying to get a free meal. We sat with patience while we waited for them to get it together. It was a long time and extenuating circumstances, like cold food and lack of rice, before we ask to get this taken off our bill. We are absolutely shocked that they would not make this right without having to charge us the price of a meal that we didn't get. This has been one of our favorite restaurants for 15 years. Due to the decline in quality and consistency that we have noticed over the last year or so, we will not be returning to the Turlock location. read more

I went with friends once and we ordered so much sushi and I dont recall our bill being that much. I was happy about that. Location, Location, location... This is the most remote part of California I've ever visited. I mean, there's really nothing out here. The only thing that brought me out here is to visit friends that moved here. They recommended this Japanese restuarant because its the only one in town that they go to. So I thought to myself, I am not in SF, I don't have that luxury of choice, I we I settled. As soon as we walked in, we got seated. I like how we didnt have to wait for a table. I was skeptical at first because I couldn't imagine very good sashimi when I am no where near water. Far away from water = frozen fish. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The sashimi was fresh.. I mean,.. fresh fresh. Personally, I think a good Japanese restuarant is not determined by the quality of their rolls, but the freshness of their fish. Their rolls are pretty descend too but not like amazing good. But like I said before, given their location n resouces, this is on the higher end of quality. You can't be asking for too much when you are in Turlock. Their service did looe a star. The waitress was a bit slow. They didn't seem to be examples of good workers. I am a regular here, and since I used to live in Hawaii while I was still in the single digits I have a lifelong love of sushi, thus my standards are preeeeetty high. This is the best in the area. The staff are great; the bathroom is one room, no stalls; the sushi is fresh fresh fresh. I have been to eat here so many times I will just review some standards: Salad: Wonderful, not too much sesame seed dressing, not too little. Tea: Hot and constant, it is rare to not have it regularly refilled even on busy nights. Orange Star: Seaweed with rice and fish eggs with mayo, super yummy. Tempura: Veggies are good. Shrimp is good. You get it hot enough to burn you, which is perfect for the likes of me! California Roll: How can you mess up a fresh California roll? I don't know, they don't either. Lion King Roll: My *favorite* thing at this place, it is a baked roll with salmon on top and a sweet sauce, but it is still a savory dish. I always order it with cream cheese added in, which costs $1 and is totally worth trying. Also, if there is a roll that looks good to you, but you wish there was something different about it, they will totally customize it for you-- good to keep in mind for the adventurous...and I guess not so adventurous types as well. Green tea ice cream: Yummy! Some green tea ice cream tastes like dirt and fail, but theirs is creamy and delicious. Make up: They sell makeup! I have been here several times while visiting a friend in the area and this is by far the BEST Japanese restuarant around Turlock. . It is family owned and operated. Not a single time visiting this place have I been disappointed. Their sashimi is absolutely delicious and fresh. I've had their assorted sashimi almost everytime I come here to eat. I've also had their soft shell crab, which was lightly battered and fried to perfection. Other rolls such as lion king roll, unagi and spicy tuna are also very tasty and best of all, the portions are generous. Also, the sushi chef and the cashier is super nice and friendly. I haven't had any bad experiences with the servers so far and they are generally friendly and attentive. Their prices makes their food better than it already is. I don't think I can ask for anything more from this place. The next time I am in the area or passing by Turlock, I'll definitely make a stop here for some sushi. read more

To be able to eat sushi-grade fresh fish in Turlock is pretty special, and so is this restaurant. I have had great items from the menu, but this review relates to sushi from the bar. Order your fish by common name, or stretch your Japanese to the limit. It won't matter. What shows up on a boat will be worth the price of admission, and will take you to another culinary plane. Raw fish that melts in your mouth, and that tastes like nothing else. Try the yellow-fin tuna, salmon, or the albacore tuna. Amazing. The octopus is chewy, but different. Have your sushi chef cut it very thin, and pile it on. Flying fish eggs, anyone? Order tobiko with a raw quail egg. Holy halibut, Batman. And do not get up from the sushi bar without having the eel. The sauce is absolutely amazing. Clean? Dang right. Better be. We are talking RAW! Service? It can't be beat at the bar. And, you can watch the preparation. Food quality? Sushi grade. Period. Upon first glance, Sushi Cuisine seems to be just another one of those strip mall, hole-in-the-wall establishments...which it is. Once inside, you quickly notice the lack of booth seating, and since I'm a pig when it comes to eating sushi, semi-privacy is important to me. All that aside, Sushi Cuisine is one of the better sushi restaurants I've been to. Large, fresh portions of fish combined with quick service and attentive wait staff (all of the wait staff are attentive to you, not just one set person) making eating here tolerable despite the lack of adequate (relaxing) seating. It was abundantly clear, due to how crowded it was getting, that people are willing to overlook Sushi Cuisine's aesthetics in favor of good sushi...and rightfully so. read more

I don't know how this place has 4 stars. I went there and ordered tonkatsu ramen not exactly expecting a lot, but was still let down incredibly. They served me pork on the side of literal instant ramen noodles and clear broth or water as most call it. I didn't even eat 2 bites of it. I paid $8.95 for something I could've paid 35 cents for at the store. I told them I didn't like it and they wouldn't take it off the check. We also ordered a dragon roll and the eel was incredibly chewy and slimy and disgusting and the shrimp still had shell on it. $40 dollars for a meal that was disgusting. read more

The good thing is that they are literally right off the freeway. What's surprising is that we got there right when they opened and they got busy really fast. Okay, again, this is someone from San Francisco reviewing sushi restaurant in a small Metropolis during a road trip. The service was decent, but their employees were mainly young college kids. Made me question their years of experience. It is a bit crowded, but we went ahead and ordered tempura and 4 rolls. Tempura - Appetizer size was like a small order of fries. Barely anything and was just mainly carrots and broccoli. Would of like more of a variety. Lambada Roll was so plan. The spicy sauce tasted more like vinegar, which killed it for me. The quality of the roll was not wrapped tightly or had much of a filling. Oh well. Golden dragon was the same. Same sauce, same feeling. Only the roe on top helped cuz it provided more flavor. This place is a great for sushi. I love how they have pictures on their menus for people who don't know the food item by the Japanese name. Sushi Cuisine's menu has the typical selection you'd find at other Japanese restaurants: sushi, udon, teriyaki, donburi, and tempura. They're prices are pretty reasonable for Japanese food, which usually can get quite pricey. I gave it 4 stars for the quality and price of the food. When I do eat here, it's out of convenience because I'm in the area. I had the Monte Vista roll for 12.50. It came with like eight large pieces will all kinds of fish inside. Next time, I will tell them to skip the sauce that they put on the outside, but it was perfect for the people that like the rice and sashimi part of sushi. (And it was deep fried too haha). One star comes off because the ramen is the cheap packaged ramen (no wonder it was the cheapest thing off the menu (8-9 dollars), but for cheap, packaged ramen, you'd think it'd be cheaper). Tip: Make a reservation if you are planning to go here. I called ahead of time to ask if we needed reservations, the person said no, so we didn't make any reservations, but once we got there, they had filled up, and so we had to wait.
