Truly a rare finding. We were staying at JW Marriott Resort and wanted to explore the surroundings. I found this place on yelp. The name needs to change because it is not the panda or Nasty restaurant express. I would call it an unique experience and amazing food. Dessert was amazinI love Korean food. I love cooking it too. A brand new place off Stone Parkway & Hardy Oak, probably one of the more authentic and easily one of the most flavorful and hospitable places in the area. Everything tastes fresh and is made with care and pride, which is hard to come on this side of town. As others have mentioned, it is BYOB. The food is very reasonably priced and the selection is good, also, if it's not on the menu, the chef is usually more than happy to make it for you (like kimchi fried rice). The owner also makes her rounds to ensure everything is good. Very good and genuine customer service. So far every dish i've either ordered or sampled has been fantastic. The spicy tuna is among the best I've had anywhere, the bento boxes are a great deal,the bee bim bop is spot on (but if you want the egg, you do have to ask for it...don't worry, it's free), and the bulgogi is very hearty and flavorful. I will be trying more of the sushi (hand rolls and sashimi) in my next trips to the restaurant. "But Matt, why should we take your word on what constitutes good Korean food and/or sushi?" one might ask, well, you all already know i'm a sushi snob, and if you didn't know, I'm a sushi snob. This place serves the fish at the proper temperature, the rice is properly cooked and rolled/formed, and the fish taste like it should (fresh). As for the Korean food, my mother-in-law is Korean, my aunt is Korean, my wife is half-Korean, and my brother tried to make his own kimchi once when we were growing up (that didn't work out so well, but I digress). The point being, I've had the pleasure of being around this cuisine off-and-on for a great majority of my entire life, most of the time homemade, and this place can hold it's own, probably b/c most of it IS homemade/handmade, even the kim chi. So, if you're tired of Americanized sushi a la Zushi Sushi (gross) or any of the other standard faire eateries on this side of town, the I implore you to give this place a try. The food is a strong 4-stars on it's own, which I expect to improve as they find their "stride" (they've only been open a month as of this review) and the hospitality pushes it to beyond the yelp! Yes. Yes. Everything yes. I was staying at the HI 5 minutes away and was craving some sushi. I was also deathly lazy and yelped what was in the area within a stone's throw. I'm SO happy I tried Sushi Express. The korean appetizers were on point - tteoki boki and haemul pajeon, and the House Boat sushi was amaaaaazing. Had lunch here and we had great service! I ordered the LA Galbi lunch set, which was korean short ribs, a salad, 3 pieces of California roll and fish cake. The portion was decent and the flavors were good. I was thinking I would be eating some sushi but was pretty happy with my lunch special. After our meal, our server let us know that Sushi Express also does delivery in the 78258 & 78260 area for $25 minimum & outside those areas for $35 minimum. Good to know for a lazy evening. Our server also let us know about their dessert specials - tempura bananas with ice cream & their new tempura Oreos - also comes with ice cream (my fat heart loves fried Oreos). I politely declined but mentally vowed to return and try both! Overall a good experience. Good food, great service. read more

What an extensive menu. I ordered the Philadelphia roll and edamame (I was playing it both cheap and safe - sorry!). My table also tried the chopchae that is not officially part of the menu but should be and the Bento Box with chicken katsu. The restaurant is participating in Restaurant Week and as part of that special, the Bento Box came with a pork pocket, a shrimp & crab spring roll and a Thai iced tea. The tea had an interesting black licorice taste I could definitely do without. We topped the meal off with a slice of homemade blueberry pie that was just right - not overly sweet or bitter. Three sisters, one of whom just recently emigrated here from Korea, own the restaurant. They are amazingly friendly and they obviously take pride in their food. The service was a tad slow but only because the waiter was on Day 2 of his new career. My coworker has already been here at least twice a week since it opened. I will be back for sure. Where else can you get a hefty and delicious roll for $5 AND a hug from one of the enthusiastic owners? read more

Authentic!!!!! We are travelling from Houston where I work in the international district and have tons of options for Korean and sushi. My hubby is half Korean so he always like to try new places looking for the taste his mom cooked. This one was pretty close. The bad-no Kimchi or cucumber Kimchi offered on banchan, when asked they were out already...cucumber Kimchi is his favorite so I know he was disappointed. The amazing...our waitress, loved her, sweet, attentive, spoke Korean and while he speaks very very little he loved having her say Korean things, reminded him of his mom. The food!!!! Ordered Kimchi jjigae it was so good. I actually learned to make this at home along time ago for him and rarely get it when we go out but was glad I did...it was perfect and had a hint of sweetness ( like they use the bulgogi in their chigae). He got jajamyeon which is one of his favorites. He loved the noodles and everything else about it....it liked it, not my favorite version of it but definitely good. The fried dumplings were so so so good, perfectly fried and the filling was yummy, so was the sauce. read more

I watched no fewer than six different individuals greeted with hugs and well wishes from what I assume is the owner/manager. Coming from southern CA, I have been hard pressed to find good Korean food so far in San Antonio. Visited this restaurant for the first time last week and the food was better than the Korean I had at Kiku Garden. Granted, this restaurant in Stone Oak has a completely different vibe. First off it is in an upscale neighborhood, and has a more refined atmosphere, but it does not have the standard fare Korean air suction units at each table for heavy duty Korean barbecuing. Also, this restaurant is advertised as a Japanese restaurant, (hence the name), and when my husband and I went there, we did not see the Korean menu initially. Although clearly the restaurant staff were Korean, as well as most of the Asian customers frequenting the place, I had to ask where the Korean food was. This prompter our server to exclaim in surprise and fetch a Korean menu. I had the stone pot bi bim bob which was decently authentic and my husband had the spicy chicken bulgogi which was tasty and good quality. We did not try any of the Japanese dishes, so cannot comment on the sushi, but we were able to fulfill our Korean food craving. read more

Okay my family and I have never eaten here and we always have gotten delivery or Togo. We recently moved back in this area and ordered dinner. The first part of my review is negative. I called in our order at 4:45 and was told that it would be ready in 20 minutes. I get to the restaurant at 5:10 to pick up our order. When I walk in there is a woman behind the counter and says nothing to me just keeps busy looking at tickets and food items. Lots of time goes by and it is pretty awkward at this point. Next, another lady comes out and does the same she is bagging orders and checking tickets. Still no hello or hi are you here to pick up an order!!! Finally, I say hello I am Bridget is my order ready ? It is now 5:30 and I am hungry and it is well past the 20 minutes they told me. Now I understand if more time is need but why tell me 20 minutes. At least sushi Zushi is honest and will tell me it's an hour wait. By the time I left the restaurant it was 5:35 pm. Almost a full hour since I called. Now fast forward to me getting home and eating dinner. We order a spider roll, Brian hand roll, princes roll , kids peanut butter and jelly roll and kids teriyaki with rice. Okay all the food was delicious! I would even say some of the best Sushi I have had in a long time. The ingredients were fresh and tasteful. My husband had the Brian hand roll and his exact words were this is amazing. Over all even with my super awkward wait and hope that I could have gotten an accurate wait time so I didn't have to wait at the restaurant that long the food was great and I will order again but with the knowing that it is not going to be a 20 minute wait. read more

I am SO excited to have found this gem in Stone Oak not far from our house. I am a sushi fanatic. I could eat it every day, and with sushi this good and reasonably priced nearby, I probably will! Boyfriend and I went there for lunch today (after attempting to go on Sunday and finding it closed...we were heartbroken) and we seriously didn't talk to each other at all for the first ten minutes or so after the food got there. And I talk...a lot. I was enjoying my food so much that I didn't want to take time out of eating to yap. I ordered the Sumo Roll and some tamago nigiri. The tamago was MAYBE the best I've ever had. And my roll was just right...fish served the right temperature, very fresh, and a generous portion. Boyfriend ordered the bibimbap and said it was very good (which is basically the best review he gives to almost anything..."yeah, it was good!") and we each ordered a pork pocket for our appetizers. We thought about sharing one, but I was glad we each got our own! I would have fought him for the other half of one, they were definitely tasty. Iced tea (like everything else) tasted fresh. Oh, and for the moment it's BYOB (which I guess some people think is a bad thing?) and I love to take advantage of places before they get their liquor license, before I have to start paying restaurant prices for wine. Just saying. The service was friendly but not obtrusive, and for the quality of food the prices are excellent. My one suggestion would be for them to play some music...it gets a little quiet in there and you start to feel like everyone can hear your conversation. I'm sorry to say that I did not enjoy my experience today at all. The bf and I saw rave reviews and we were headed to this area so we decided to give it it a try! The lunch specials looked really well priced and I was definitely in a sushi mood. We walked in at 12:20 on a Tuesday and there were only two other filled tables... Not a great sign. We sat down and asked for water. I ordered the roll combo #4, and he got the express sushi deluxe lunch. Our miso came out promptly but everything was disappointing after that. The miso was too salty for my taste. My rolls came out fairly quickly and were fine. The spicy tuna was just not good. The different sauces on top of my stone oak roll were also just kind of bad... The wrong flavor entirely and overpowered all the elements of the roll. My bf unfortunately didn't receive his lunch for another 15 minutes. Not my idea of express... The waitress realized he hadn't received food and went to speak to the chef. They both laughed at his mistake, in front of us, then she came over to apologize for the wait, neglecting to fill our empty glasses. When his plate did come he was so hungry he ate without really tasting anything. I had a bite of one roll and it seemed less than fresh. Subpar sushi, slow service, and prices that aren't competitive with similar places. I'm sorry to say I will not be back. read more

Don't be fooled by the name! Just because it has "express" in it does not mean it's made fast and cheap. Sushi express is one of the few places that has sushi grade fish in SA. I honestly just go for the sushi, egg rolls and gyoza. My boyfriend loves their egg rolls and they are delicious but in my opinion I would not pay $2 for one. The sushi on the other hand, the price is comparable to most sushi places I've been. They have some of the ordinary sushi rolls like California roll, rainbow roll, or tiger roll. But they also put a little twist on their own sushi creations. My go to rolls are the Mexican, jasmine, tejas and volcano roll. One of the perks of sushi express is that they offer delivery in the stone oak area! It really doesn't get better than sushi delivery. read more

My daughters have been coming here for some time. The name is a bit, um, corny (sounds like fast food), so I was in no hurry to eat at a place that had the word "Express" in its name (think "Panda Express" - yuk). Fortunately, they convinced this foodie to go a few weeks back. We returned again tonight for my second visit. Both times we opted for the stone-bowl bi bim bap (bibimbab). It comes piping hot, sizzling and well presented. Nice egg on top! I've only had it better one other place. My only recommendation would be to hold it in the kitchen long enough to allow the rice to turn crispy brown for even better texture and flavor. Last time, had fresh green tea. Tonight had nice Ecco Domani pinot grigio. The kim-chee is fresh and tasty. Ambiance is simple but upscale. Staff are very friendly, prompt, and helpful. OVERALL: EXCELLENT. I've been many sushi restaurant but this is not a good one. Came around 2pm on Monday, but there is only 2 tables. The way they preserve their food is not good since the texture of sushi seems old and taste fishy. We order Hormer's roll and we just don't like the taste of it, plus the way the Chief grabs the roll not too tight and professional. The soft shelf crab is just okay. The jjing- ppong soup comes late that my boyfriend already finished his sushi and soft shelf crab. The soup on the other hand taste good tho'. The server girl seems uneasy but she's trying. Whoa. This place is delicious!!!! I'm not a fan of rolls buuuut they have the best damn rolls I've ever had! The Paradise roll...wow. Perfect. I don't like rice or seaweed so this one is wrapped in rice paper and has salmon and ahi with cucumbers and asparagus, avocado... Just amaze balls. The salmon tower is too good, all the flavors of the different sauces topped with various roe, you gotta try it. My husband order the sashimi/sushi dinner and you really get what you pay for. It was a lot of food... And he loved the champion roll as well, there wasn't a crumb on his plate to share. The staff service was spot on, super friendly and attentive. I was not happy with the sushi here at all. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive though, which was nice. I feel the sushi was a bit on the expensive side (almost as much as Sushi Zushi), and was not at all worth the price. I've had much better quality elsewhere, and will not be going back here. I ordered shrimp fried rice, carrots and peas on the size, eggs on side, shrimp on size, extra order of shrimp,extra order of eggs, was told 5 shrimp come in the order, and 5 extra shrimp where 2.50. I agreed and was told order would be ready in 10-15 min. I went over in 15 min and order was not ready, when I came back order was ready but was very incorrect.... I was given little pieces of shit filled shrimp that was ice cold, when I asked the OWNER if they cleaned the shrimp, his reply was never..... I will never go back and will tell everyone I know that this place serves shit filled shrimp, and BTW the owners wife was extremely rude, when I came to pick up the food..... I don't have one bad thing to say about this place! The food (both Japanese and Korean) are amazing and the service has been top notch. Most places that try to stick their hand in more than one type of food usually loses the authenticity of one or the other but not Sushi Express. Let's talk about the food! So far we have tried their sushi rolls, hand rolls and nigiri. My husband is a huge salmon nigiri guy and says these ones here weren't his favorite but were pretty darn good. We've tried their California Hand Roll and Tempura Shrimp Hand Roll. But my favorite so far is the Brian Hand Roll - which is basically the cali and tempura shrimp roll in one. lol They don't over do the rice so that it looks full but it's just acting as a filler. Which ever you order, you can bet there will be a lot of crab, fish, tempura, etc. We've had a couple of their rolls and to be honest, I don't remember their names but I haven't had one that I didn't like. I think they should change their name to "Sushi-rean Express" because more people need to know about their Korean food. I've had their Kimchi Tofu Soup (Soondobu) and the Spicy Seafood Soup (Jjampong) - I may have butchered the names but in my defense, Korean Cuisine Spelling 101 wasn't a requirement in my business courses. Both came with side dishes (my favorite!). Seafood soup came with mussels, octopus, calamari and shrimp and lots of it. Both dishes were around $11-13 which isn't bad considering the amount of food you get. Lots of flavor in both dishes. My only complaint, IF i had to complain, is that the dishes weren't as spicy as I would like them to be. Then again, this is personal preference and I'm sure if I asked they could add more spice. Yes, some of the food can be a little pricey BUT the quality is there. Which is why I can justify spending that much on the food here. We've eaten at their restaurant once and have used their delivery services twice. We ate at the restaurant on a Friday night around 8pm and the dinner crowd was dying down but it was still a little busy. I wish I got our server's name because he was fantastic. Both times we have ordered delivery we were quoted a wait time of around 45 min but they always seem to come in 30 or less! read more

I walked in to pick it up and noticed that they were happy to take my order and let me pick it up 15-20 minutes before they were even open for the day. The waiter was very friendly. He offered me a glass of water to drink while I waited and was friendly and conversational. I mentioned that I forgot they have Korean on the menu and he recommended the pork bulgogi. A little hidden gem near the Stone Oak area. Don't let the name sushi fool you, they have a bountiful Korean menu as well! As for the sushi side, I've only had their tamago sashimi/sushi, which is grilled egg. It's actually quite hard to find at cookie-cutter Americanized sushi joints, and when done well is a fluffy, sweet but savory dream. Theirs was quite good. Now, the Korean food! After ordering you'll be brought a "Banchan", kind of like appetizers in the states but meant more as a accompaniments for your meal & a crucial part of authentic Korean dining. It varies but you'll usually always get kimchi, fish cakes, vegetables & pickle assortments. All tasty & a great way to get just a tiny bit adventurous without being out any money. As for the mains, my FAVE is the Bulgogi. I've tried a few others but none sticks out in my mind like this one. Spicy but a hint of almost sweet barbecue. You can get beef or pork, both great & super filling! I hope more people order Korean items so they never take them off the menu! read more

I go to tell the manager about the hair in my roll and she listened for 3 seconds but then answered a phone call and took a to-go order while I waited for 5 minutes. Then she said ' oh I'm sorry - is free appetizer next time ok?' I was still charged for my sushi roll, even though they took the last 2 pieces away from me that had the hair. They also have typos in their menu about what's in the rolls and they don't seem to care about quality - which makes me nervous when dealing with raw foods. Will stick with sushi zushi. The name "Sushi Express" is rather misleading, because the quality of the sushi and the friendly service are remarkable for the price and convenient location. I go frequently for lunch and dinner, and have never had a disappointing experience. The specialty rolls are delicious!
