Great neighborhood spot! Everyone needs their easy casual local sushi spot and Sushi Gama is just that! While this is no BondSt or Nobu it certainly does the job for a reasonable price. We had the shrimp dumplings and sushi pizza to start and then I had some sashimi. The dumplings and pizza were great, nothing out of this world, but did the job perfectly. The sashimi wasn't amazing but again good enough for the price. Service was wonderful - super quick and easy. Finished dinner at this sushi restaurant a short while ago. The place was full. The ambiance I'll rate an "A". The servers were friendly but I wish they came around a little more often. It took a while for our food to come out. I've been eating a lot of sushi lately and it was a bit pricier, so I ordered Pad Thai ($22), my wife Yaki Udon ($22), and my daughter Chicken Teriyaki ($24). My dish was understated, in fact, bland. I had to add some soy sauce. My wife's Udon was likewise unflavorful. My daughter felt her dish was OK but just a bit too salty. I took a taste and enjoyed it - I should have ordered her dish, or perhaps some sushi. Overall, the quality of the dishes that we had just did not match the nice decor. This dining establishment averages 3 1/2 stars - I think that's about right. Update: Brought some leftover home to have the next day. My wife ate a mouthful and felt a wooden splinter which she fortunately did not swallow. Accordingly, I'm reducing my rating to a generous 3 stars, and will not be going back. read more

Filled with dark energy. The staff was extremely hostile, we will not be returning. My friend and I have never been treated so horribly by a restaurants staff in years. We hesitated to make a review because of how uncomfortable the entire situation was as a whole. We saw the hours on Apple Maps as closing at 11 pm. We walked in at 10 pm and as they brought out our orders over the following 20 mins they ripped our plates away while we were eating. They put the check in front of us within 20 mins of sitting down and then badgered us to give a card within the next 5. We were then berated by the waitress serving us for not putting our card down within those 5 mins and then told us they close at 10:30 pm on Thursdays. We were confused so we looked back at Apple Maps and I walked up to another waitress who was sitting at the bar to let them know their times weren't accurately reflected on Apple Maps( bc our waitress grabbed the check, ran the card and slapped it back down and ignored me when I tried to tell her the hours were off seconds before). The second waitress who was sitting at the bar was extremely rude and dismissed me- mind you, I was just telling them because I felt bad that I wasn't informed beforehand that they closed at 10:30 pm until after our check was slammed down lol. Honestly, sucks to be treated like that in our own neighborhood. Also the food was mid- was forced to box it because we were rushed out at 10:32 pm. We exited at 10:41 pm. Get it together y'all.... Sushi Gama serves excellent mid-quality sushi for the great price point in the UES. Sushi in New York comes in three tiers: low, mid and high quality. The low quality is usually something you find at a AYCE sushi place. High quality sushi usually comes at a high price (think of Sushi Zo). Sushi Gama has mid quality for a great mid-level price. ($60 for 12 piece Omakase). The cuts of fish were delicious and smooth but not perfection. Our first bite of sushi (and one of my favorites) was the fatty seared o-toro. It was meaty, rich and had my salivating for more. Usually, this is served at the end of the meal because it is so rich. But it was the first bite, which threw off the palate for the leaner cuts of fish that followed. I enjoyed the complimentary fatty salmon, lean tuna and mango salad that was served in the beginning of the meal. The clam salad was very nice with the Chayote salad but the clams were missing a springiness that is associated with freshness. The California Barbara uni was almost perfect: sweet, salty, tender but a little cold. The wild king salmon was amazingly tender, sweet and slightly fatty. The eel was perfectly savory, fluffy, and cloud-like, it was amazing! So the cons: one scale on the fish at the end of the meal. Sauces and wasabi was a little strong. The sushi omakase could be rearranged so the O-toro piece is served at the end after the uni. Pros: Most pieces were very good to amazing. And the Chef was very very friendly.
