We used to come here when this place was Peter's Sushi Spot, the inside has not changed hugely since then, except maybe for the hot plates on the tables, should you wish to have shabu shabu. The hot plates are spotlessly clean, I did notice, and there were instructions on the wall on how to cook shabu shabu. We used to come for the Tempura Udon which was spectacular. We were seated very quickly, and water was brought out. I decided to go with my benchmark dish, which always gives me some idea of whether I will return or not, and ordered chicken fried rice, husband got the tempura udon, so he could compare with the previous Udon we used to get here. I noticed that their soft drinks are only $2 which is an excellent price in my opinion. I got a Canada Dry as I love ginger ale. His Udon came out quite quickly, and we could instantly tell that the broth did not have the same depth of flavour, as when we used to come here, (it was quite smoky and very umami) and this one has a distinctly seaweed tang. Thats not to say that it's bad, it's just different. The noodles are also not quite so dense, chewy or toothsome. Additionally the tempura was somewhat of a letdown. The shrimps were very slimline compared to the display on the tv. There was an onion ring, that was also quite thin. Just not a good representation of tempura. Also, comparing with the Udon that used to be here, you also got a cup of miso soup, and a small salad with a carrot orange dressing. Those are gone. As for my chicken fried rice, well the presentation was excellent, it came on a beautiful plate, and looked very appetizing. The first couple of bites were really nice, plenty of carrots, broccoli, chicken, however I soon started encountering tender crisp onions. Which I cannot eat. They give me violent stomach pains. I can only eat onions that have been cooked down to almost mush. Anything raw or that has any element of crunch to it is a no-go, as it will make me ill. I found it somewhat unusual, as I get fried rice all over town and have never encountered chunky onions before. I'm sure I could have asked them to leave them out had I known they were going to be in there. It tasted good, for sure, but having to continually move the onions aside (and there was a lot of onions) was offputting. Normally when i get fried rice, I eat some, and take the rest in a to go box. I did not take the rest home this time which is very telling. Anyway, service was excellent, and they were very attentive - for instance our server saw that my husband was giving me a spoonful of his udon, and without being asked he came over with an extra spoon, small bowl, and a ladle, which I thought was very thoughtful. First timer here today and they blew us out of the water. It is a quaint spot in midtown with great decor offering a wide selection from sushi to hot pot to ramen etc. We came specifically to try out the sushi, got an off the menu recommendation from the server plus three special rolls and Otoro nigiri. We were served with miso to start and the miso was a great way to settle in the warmth on a 0 degree day while we waited for our rolls. It took a short wait to get everything but it was clear everything was crafted with care and high quality ingredients. Every roll blew us away, each as delicious as the next. We had the small shabu pot for about $70. It was a perfect size to share amongst the 4 of us as we did order sushi alongside. The Shabu did come with a tray of veggies and about 30 slices of meat. I was in anchorage for an errand and wanted to try a new place for sushi, and this did not disappoint! The atmosphere is very inviting, beautifully designed, and the table tops had built in hot plates if your dish requires it. I enjoyed the Golden Knight Sushi rolls, and ordered Gyoza to go. They offer wines and sake, but I had to drive so wasn't able to sample any. The server was very prompt , and attentive. I was greeted and sat quickly, and he brought the menu and water shortly after. Both he and another kind lady behind the preparation counter bid me goodbye when I got up to leave. I loved the instructions for certain dishes posted on the wall of my booth, and on back of the chop sticks in case one is unaware of what and how things work. Honestly the service was not great. Half of our table got hot food (beef, fried rice, bento box) & that came out pretty quick. Those people were almost done with thier meals by the time our sushi came out & took us forever to order in general. They did bring miso soup out to everyone which was nice. Overall, my mom and sisters had a good time here. They put in our orders multiple times because the waiter came around twice with duplicate items which we didn't take. Dishes were decent portions for the price since Alaska dining is more expensive than most places. The area we sat in did not allow hotpot which was a bummer but we made do with our sushi options. My waiter went above and beyond helping me decide what to order and even brought me a sample of his personal favorite to try, which was such a thoughtful touch. Kind of low key and casual, the service is quick and the rolls excellent. We had Sun of the Beach, Surf and Turf and Mr Choice, of the three, Mr Choice was so good we ordered a second. I came by for a quick lunch while on a work trip. They offered complimentary miso soup and the edamame was very good - much better than the other edamame I have eaten while in Alaska. Checked out Sushi Motto on Christmas Day and tried the hot pot for the first time. The portions were huge and much larger than expected. With four people we did the large size per person and took home lots of leftovers as well. It was fun to cook everything right on the table and eat it fresh. Walking into what was Peter's Sushi Spot, it has a lot of the same vibe but with added K-pop hits playing. Sitting at the bar, servers were attentive. Ordered the lunch Mongolian beef, lunch crunch roll add chili sauce, and the small shashimi mix plate. Would suggest more sashimi combo lunch options. The Mongolian beef was sweet and plentiful, just enough crispy and juicy, in perfect-sized bites, presented on a bed of crispy rice noodles, topped with green onions/scallions. Sushi Motto: 2.3/5 TLDR: some places gotta do better. Be worth what you charge. The Good; rolls was a good portion, the toro was solid and the sashimi salad was plentiful. Cuts were fresh and thick- rice was solid. However this wasn't the star of the show- if I'm basing the entire visit on the sushi however we'd be at a 3.8- The Bad: at $110 for shabu Shabu I expected a plethora of traditional mix ins- instead we were met with one main protein- and overloaded on "fillers" (bok choy / cabbage) on top of the fact that we were given ONE LITTLE ASS BOWL of udon noodles. The broth didn't have much depth- it was straight dashi. I was so shocked that there was only one bowl of noodles offered that I asked the manager and the serve TWICE if they gave us the right size bowl to which they said that was indeed all you got. Everything else as far as an add on is well over $5. Even accounting the fact that we are in Alaska- if you walked 20 feet next door to Manila stop and shop you could buy your own noodles and sneak them in lol. The sauce bar needed diversity, and there was a huge lack of fresh mix ins in the bar. The servers were sweet but you can tell they need more help. Myself and a couple other tables tonight were constantly looking for assistance and getting anything else after our food was served was impossible. Considering it has been a few months since they've opened it's pretty disappointing. Just speaking from my personal experience; I will say there is a tendency for places to take advantage of patrons in Alaska whilst bringing "new to Alaska" type places. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt they are trying to do their best but just based on the lowest tier hot pot/shabu place out of state it just seems both sushi motto and the other shabu place here are just here to be here. I will be back for sushi, but the shabu shabu to me was a complete rip off. I've gone to countless shabu/hotpot places and this was by far the biggest food to price defecit I've ever seen. read more

2 guests for lunch. One server in the entire restaurant .. got my order wrong. Server was professional if a bit young. Miso soup was watered down with no green onions or tofu in either bowl. Ordered the golden knight roll and son of the beach roll. Golden knight had too much cream cheese and a strange flavor. The son of the beach was ok but had raw white onions on top which made the entire roll taste like raw yellow onion. Also ordered unagi hamachi toro and salmon pairs. Pairs were small in comparison to other restaurants. Salmon was ok. Unagi was ok. The hamachi and tuna were very fishy and didn't finish eating them. Disappointing. Wont be back. Lovely atmosphere if you don't really care about the food. Many more spots around town that are much more satisfying and delicious. read more
