I'm really surprised at the Yelp rating on this place! I had a wonderful experience here celebrating a friend's birthday dinner. We ordered spicy edamame, shrimp and veggie tempura, and the spicy tuna rice cakes for apps. Everything was delicious! The edamame had great flavor, the more garlic the better. The tempura batter was nice and light. The tempura dipping sauce was spot on, not too salty, not too bland. The spicy tuna rice cakes were also delicious! Crispy and dense and the tuna had a good flavor as well. We ordered an assortment of rolls including the heart attack, Hailands, Mile Hai, Dropkick, and Las Vegas. I think the heart attack roll was my favorite. The sauce was amazing. I honestly would order any of these rolls again! The fish seemed fresh in the rolls although flavor tends to hide well under sauce and large amounts of toppings. I will definitely try some sashimi the next time I'm in. I loved my house sake (hot of course) and the server was lovely. The host was also a doll. She made sure our cake came out lit with the candles we brought! Came in with my daughter for dinner since I purchased a Living Social voucher that was about to expire. Made a reservation on Open Table and were greeted and seated immediately upon our arrival. The location was very clean, and comfortable. They have a good menu with plenty of variety. Our server brought us waters and gave us plenty of time to decide on what to order. To start off, we ordered the purple haze sake and two Sapporo beers. We then decided to start off with miso soup and a variety of sushi rolls. The miso was yummy and the sushi rolls came out nicely presented and were very flavorful. Ended the meal with a huge scoop of Green Tea Ice Cream (a great portion to share) and Hot Green Tea. The service was top-notch and our server was very friendly, professional and attentive. Price was very reasonable and we left feeling very satisfied. The only problem is finding street parking. Wednesday March 04th 2009: 9 friends and I came to Sushi Hai for dinner. We were seated downstairs in one of the tatami rooms similar look-alike sort of tatami rooms. When I first arrived, I feel at the "front desk" ~ the lady is snorty. But at least she informed our party that one of our members could not join us so that's is OK and so there are 10 of us. As usual I came early. At least the Assistance Organizer for the Sushi group came earlier than me since her sister lives around this neighborhood. Okies, back to Sushi Hai. When I was there, the outside room were where the lounge/bar/karaoke rooms, seems a little empty. But boy oh boy, with the blasting stereo MTV music wannabe or look-alike, this place is LOUD. Then back to service. At least our waitstaff was attentive to our needs. She brings out what we requested. Now for the food: These are what I ordered for that evening of March 04th 2009: * New Zealand Green Lip Mussels * Hai Calamari Nigiri Sushi: * Amaebi * Unagi * Kani * Hokkigai * Kaibashira * Uni * Masago * Wasabi Tobbiko * Tako Tako (Spicy Octopus) All in all I AM NOT WOW with the order I have that evening. The rice of the sushi seems a little too "tough" for my taste bud. The only sushi nigiri I like is the Tako Tako (Spicy Octopus). I still cant figure out what they put in, either the marinade or the sauce in Tako Tako. Another DRAWBACK, arent sure if this is true or not. Not all our entrees came out at a orderly manner. I heard there is only ONE sushi Chef. Like, hello... if you were to run a sushi restaurant please do engage several Sushi Chefs so at least everyone is not kept waiting for their food. As the time goes by, the place outside this Tatami Room gets louder and louder and more patrons for the BAR Scene arrives. Not condusive for me in my books to have dinner here let alone to bring my friends. But oh well, this shall be my 1st and last to eat sushi at Sushi Hai. Do yourself a favor and drive further for some real stuff, no offense but look for sushi chefs that are Asian, even if they're just Chinese and not Japanese, still would be better than here. Plus in The Highlands, you end up paying so much more for mediocre food! This place is Asian fusion done wrong. We decided to check out the fish tacos and thought they were pretty aweful taste wise (looked very beautiful), the chunks of fish were dry and you could barely taste the sauce, up until maybe the last bite. But turns out this appetizer was the best thing of the entire meal! Then came the sushi, they were aweful and expensive. Bland, loose, not sure if they want to be raw or cooked, cold or hot, just really confusing. I'm referring to the Mile High Roll and the Surf 'n Turf roll BTW, of the latter I was expecting the beef on top would be seared and drizzled with teriyaki sauce but noooo, looked like day old meat, just gross. And the shrimp tempura insde the roll looked like left overs, ewww. We shared the duck entree, I asked for medium well. It looked, again, very beautiful and tasted like duck but nothing impressive or too delicious about it. Even with a LivingSocial deal, I ended up paying almost $40 for an unsatisfying meal (as soon as I walked out and get in my car, I dug into a tamale previously bought from the nearby Tamale Kitchen because I was still not full!) that didn't even include any drinks! If not for the coupon, I would've had to pay over $60. Of which about $10 went to tips and I felt like she didn't do much excpet just taking our order and coming to check on us once. Didn't even serve our food, somebody else did, maybe the bus boy. I felt I had to tip more for the high price of the bad food than for good service. Sigh. I'd run away from this place. Tl;dr good sushi, hard to find parking, good cocktails, okay service. Came here for Valentine's Day dinner so understandably it was a bit busy. We sat downstairs which had a cool vibe and it looks like they have small private rooms for groups which was nice. The cocktails were really good and so was the sushi. The Rocky Mountains roll was so good if you like cream cheese. Service was okay. Not super friendly or fast but also not rude or slow. It was just okay. The parking around this area is horrendous on the weekends so be prepared to walk! It's a nice location other than that and with the two levels you don't feel so over crowded. If you want something intimate be sure to reserve a booth or you'll be cozy with your neighbors. The service we had the night we went wasn't great she was just friendly enough to our faces but didn't give us a warm welcome feeling and every time we asked about something it seemed to annoy her. The drink menu is decent , lots of great sake choices and they make a great cocktail. The wine list didn't thrill me but it wasn't awful. The sushi itself was decent and came out all at once so there wasn't any time to graze. The Mango Roll was my favorite, it had a nice balance of all the flavors. The service was quick. So quick that sadly my appetizer came out with my food. I didn't even want the appetizer at that point. But it was eaten and it was delicious so I can't complain entirely. Sushi Hai is a great place if your craving quality sushi. This is definitely one of the better sushi restaurants I've had in town. We ordered the spicy edamame with tempura flakes, HaiLands roll and the Mango roll. None of which disappointed. I especially loved the edamame and HaiLands roll. The flavor of the edamame was garlicky and had a slight crunch from the tempura. Hands down the best edamame I've ever had. The HaiLands roll had salmon with cream cheese, radish sprouts, housemade spicy mayo and was served warm! I love warm sushi, it is definitely a style that is not offered everywhere and Sushi Hai does it right. Sushi Hai has private rooms for large parties and special occasions. They stay true to japanese culture by asking people to take off their shoes before entering these rooms. The party then sits on cushions and shares a table low to the ground. (Don't worry, you don't have to take your shoes off for restaurant dining, only the private rooms). Our server at Sushi Hai was amazing! She rocked those tables. She was prompt, polite and busted her butt to make sure all of her tables were satisfied. The only awkward moment was when we entered the restaurant through the wrong door and found ourselves in some weird, dark, empty back room. We found someone who worked there who pointed us in the right direction. Even this was hard to navigate. We followed the hallway which brought us to the main dining room, then up the stairs to the bar area where we found the host desk. Didn't go to the restaurant proper, only to the Hai Bar downstairs for Happy Hour on a Friday. The sushi is nothing special, the regular spicy tuna & philly roll type. No one in my group whined or raved. The sake is nice and hot and poured out of some kind of sake hot pot that reminds me of the Jager coolers. Not much of a selection, tho, only 2. The atmosphere was pretty cool, not as uptight as the sake lounge down the street, more of the young, loud after-work crowd. There were definitely some that had dressed to impress, but I didn't feel uncomfortable in my jeans. Liked that there were pool tables in another section (so you don't have to dodge sticks to get to the bar). The bathroom is...... interesting. The stall doors remind me of the old middle school gym locker room. Apparently we were going for industrial-sheik in there. Parking, sucks, as usual in this area. If I was in the neighborhood again, I'd stop in for a drink. But, I don't think I'll be dining here any time soon. There are much better places for Happy Hour in the area. read more

I think this is the most underrated sushi spot in Denver. Over the years I have come here a few times, but recently my book club started hosting their meetings here. Book clubs are hard to serve, because there is a group of 20 people and someone always needs something, but they are always talking so you can't really address the group at once. The servers here do an absolutely fantastic job of accommodating us. We have hosted our book club at 3 different locations so far, and Sushi Hai is the clear winner because of the fantastic service. They also have the space to provide a large but quiet and secluded space for us to host our discussions. Aside from their amazing staff, the sushi is GOOD. Like much better than I've had at more expensive places. Their salmon is always fresh and buttery, and their rolls are always packed perfectly. I am so impressed with Sushi Hai. I can't wait to come back for our next book club meeting, and will make the effort to attend outside of that because their food and service are so exceptional, and the prices are always affordable. Thank you for all of your hard work to make sure all the ladies are wined and dined! You guys really do an outstanding job. I traveled to Denver often for work, and every time I was in town, I made sure to stop by here. This place is all around awesome. The service, atmosphere, food, and presentation are all great. The fish tasted fresh and each roll had a unique taste and was well balanced. I hate when you get sushi and every roll tastes kind of similar to the other or they try to drown the sushi in sauce/crunchy stuff to mask the taste. The proportion of rice, fish, sauce, and other stuff was just right. The presentation is also totally on point. It was such a nice touch when I asked the server what the pretty flower was that I saw leaving a bunch of plates behind the sushi counter. When I got my plate, the plating was beautiful and the exact type of flower that I had asked about was right in the middle. The best presentation I've seen from a sushi restaurant in a long time. I was looking forward to this place but it was mostly a really disappointing experience. We got the chef's boat with mango roll. Everything tasted ok, not the best I've had or the worst, somewhere in the middle. We also had the seared scallops and it tasted good. Service was terrible. I guess our waiter was new, which I understood but he checked up on us once, when we got our food, and that was it. The other waitress took care of us and refilled our waters but our actual waiter never even checked up to refill our water or checked to see if our drinks needed refills. We waited about 50 min for our food to even come out. Our waiter never came back around that time to even check up on us or tell us that we would have to wait a while for our food. Our seared scallops were really cold and so was the rest of our sushi. This was such a disappointing experience. I was looking forward to a good date night but this place does not provide that. If you're looking for a new sushi place to go to, I do not recommend this place. I'm only giving it 3 stars for the ok food, it would've been 1 star if food was not decent.
