My friend and I had food poisoning here. We came here with 4 people and ordered a few items to share. My friend and I were the only ones who ate the lobster roll special and we were both throwing up top and bottom :/ for a few days. I should have known, it smelled fishy even though it was fried and it was also on the today's special menu. I believe they were trying to get rid of old food by putting it on today's special menu instead of throwing it out. Came here because of the reviews and it did not disappoint! As we were parking, I was very skeptical that this place was going to be good but boy was I wrong. We walked inside and there was only one other table that had guests. The lady that greeted was so sweet and provided us with hot towels for our hands before we go start with our meal. We started off with the hot sake and it was delicious. We then ordered the avocado sushi (forgot the actual name on the menu) and it was also delicious. I had never had anything like it - definitely something very unique. I ordered a bento box with bulgogi and salmon teriyaki. It was my first time ordering bulgogi so I can't too much of an opinion on that but the salmon teriyaki was so good. Honestly, everything we ordered was so good and completely exceeded our expectations. I will definitely be coming back here! I was struggling while writing this review, I'm in between 3 stars or 4 stars and can't decide which one to go with. My first image of this restaurant is very good, I like the decoration when I step in, it's very typical Japanese decoration and I feel they should have delicious food. However, I was kind of disappointed with the food itself. My major concern is two things: 1) the sashimi is warm, I never got such temperature of fish previously in a premium Sushi place (I count average cost per person $40+ as a premium place), the fish should be stored in a cold place and keep the temperature low. 2) Sushi rice is not meet my expectation, it's a little bit hard than it should be and not in a good balance of sweet/sour, a good Sushi rice should be in a good balance of soft&hard, and taste kind of sweet with a little bit sour. Well, there is still something good about the food, they offer more amount of fish than other Sushi places, the Sashimi and Sushi are much bigger than normal. So, after struggling for a long time, I decided to rate this place as 4 stars, since I believe the negative side could be improved in the future, and I like the decoration. read more

So we have lived in Bellevue for 20 years and our go to spot is Flo for sushi. Recenya friend raved about this place so my wife and I are hereast night. It could be our new Eastside sushi spot. The staff was so friendly, the place was clean, sanitized and flowing covid protocols. But we came here for fish and the sushi was amazing. This was the perfect way to end a long day. We were in town celebrating a friends birthday and wanted to end with sushi. It was later in the evening and most places were full. But they are pretty expensive around $14. The rolls we ordered (inchi and Seattle) were pretty tasty, but Ieft me wanting more worth for the price. Maybe it was just the presentation of the rolls. And I think they are right. The broth was fantastic. Also on top they decorated with chicken katsu and boiled egg. I can not explain the taste. You have to go and eat. For roll, I ordered Mongo Tango roll which was their special. I think mango and salmon combination was soooo nice mango was sweet and salmon was fresh. Second roll was Crunch Monster roll this one also on the special board. And they said this one is not on the menu. it is their new menu plus new style. The roll was spicy and creamy. I think they put jalapeño and cream cheese. And they made the roll more flavorful. Ichi roll was soso ... maybe i dont like ebi.. but the soy mustard sauce was great. And sunny roll can not be not delicious because there was shrimp tempura and spicy tuna on top. Amazing. Overall, this place is amazing. The fish is so fresh and flavorful. I didn't read the menu closely enough but the shrimp tempura roll I'm used to doesn't include imitation crab. Still not too sure where the high rating is coming from... I have to say, I was impressed with Sushi In Joy. Given it's humble exterior, I didn't wasn't sure what to expect, but I had a good experience here. The fish was really fresh, and you could taste it. Not bland or rubbery, it tasted like the ocean as it melted in my mouth. Seriously people, don't be fooled by the shabby exterior, the quality of the fish is just as good as you'd expect in a great seafood place. They lose a star because the place was total chaos when I stopped in. The setup isn't designed to handle large crowds, and if you make the mistake of stopping in during those hours (guilty as charged) expect the chaos. That said, the fish is worth the wait, stick around, get a table, and dig in! read more

I thought it was great. Not sure what problems the other reviewers had, but I liked it. I was in town on business and found the place on Google maps. I went in around 6:30 in the evening and ordered the sushi Bento box dinner special. It was a ton of food. i couldn't even eat it all: Miso soup, salad, spicy tuna, 12 pieces of sashimi, 3 individual pieces of sushi, 14 sushi rolls, and two prawns. All of that was $25! I don'[t know what sushi goes for in WA, but in CA, that is a steal. The fish tasted extremely fresh, the service was quick and friendly. I loved the mom and pop atmosphere and the fact that the place was unassuming and seemed to have a local crowd. I'm hoping to go back next time I'm in town. read more

I originally discovered this place listed as one of the most highly rated places on sushifinder, and I'm glad I tried it out! I recently went here for lunch for the first time, and I really liked the sushi bento! Two pieces of sushi, sashimi, three different kinds of rolls, cucumber salad, chicken katsu, and miso & salad. The fish in this bento didn't stand out to me too much, but I loved the rolls and the great variety. EDIT: This is the closest restaurant to me that's open for dinner, so I know I'll keep going back. Tonight, I had the 8 piece sushi dinner, which comes with a choice of California, Seattle, or spicy tuna roll. I ate a piece of the roll and then snapped a picture to upload. It seems there's no middle point with salt. The first time I was here I ordered a Dragon Roll and a tako salad. The salad was a hefty size but SO salty; I couldn't finish half before feeling nauseous. I love sesame oil and salt as a dressing but the leaves and tako slices were soaking in salt oil. The Dragon Roll was good, but it wasn't any better than other sushi places. I came back another day and got a bento box and Niku udon. The udon was flavorless. The bento box had pretty good bulgogi but the Saba Shioyaki was so oily that it was creating a big pool in the corner of its section when I tipped the bento box. If you were to come here for bulgogi or teriyaki, I'm sure it's not bad. Though, I don't know if it's worth it with the prices they are charging. I'd rather just stick with Coco Ramen & Curry Bar for delicious katsu and side salad. read more

I have been to Sushi In Joy about 4-5 times now - that tells you a little something about my thoughts on the place. The restaurant is tucked in a strip mall north of downtown Bellevue on Bellevue Way. It's more of a neighborhood joint than a place that will get a lot of casual foot traffic. The restaurant is nice and comfortable inside - they have updated the decor a couple of time to improve it in the last 2 years. It's a smaller place with a very small bar and a handful of tables in the restaurant. The service is always very good there - attentive, courteous and quick. The food is solid in quality and portions. While not exceptional food, prices are reasonable for what they offer. In addition, they frequently have some nice daily choices of fish and sashimi that you might not expect. Their bento boxes are a great deal! Definitely worth trying - even if you don't think it stands out, there are enough good qualities to make you come back. And, of course, it's great to support a locally owned business! read more

Been searching for another non-conveyor sushi place on the east side since I discovered Sushi Ten in Redmond closed. From my quest for a new Japanese restaurant, I realized there really are very few places to get a well priced bento and tasty rolls. Most are the a la carte, mass produced, sushi on a conveyor belt that I don't particularly care for. However, I found this place and decided to check it out. I went for dinner with two other people on a week night. It's more like a mom and pop restaurant and decorated modestly so if you're looking for more of a saki bomb, hip scene, I would say go elsewhere. I ordered the Mariner roll, one person ordered the Tempura Bento Dinner and a California roll, and the other person ordered Seafood Yakisoba. The portions were great for the price and everyone enjoyed their meal. I especially loved the Mariner roll, which was beautifully presented and consisted of tempura shrimp and cucumber, topped with seared scallop, a house sauce, and small watercress stems. The only cons were that the sushi took a while and the California roll was terrible. For most, the waiting would keep them from coming back but my party and I didn't mind waiting as we weren't in any rush and visited while we waited for our food. There was only one sushi chef and there were other people in the restaurant that had ordered before us so the wait was understandable. Also, the waitress specifically said there would be a wait for our sushi while she was taking our order. This and other reviews prepared us for this. As for the California roll, there was no masking how fake the crab was and instead of just crab it was chopped and mixed with a mayo type sauce--something like you would see at QFC. Our work staff sometimes goes here for meals with special guests, as they have a room we can reserve as well as tatami room options. Food is decent, if a bit spendy for what you get; because of that, while I never feel unhappy about my visits here, I never choose it when I'm the one picking. Bulgogi choices are good. The sushi is good enough, but not special. There are other places I prefer. The restaurant has always been quiet when I've visited -- good for a conversation -- if a bit dark inside.
