I came here for dinner and ordered a 10 piece nigiri set($18) and added a special roll for 10 dollars. The place was pretty packed for a Wednesday night and it seemed like there was only one waitress running around serving everyone. It took a while to get our water and utensils, but the waitress was definitely hustlin! Our order came out pretty quickly for a place being so packed. I sat on the bar area and watched the chef prepare the rolls. The fish that was taken out of the fridge at the sushi bar and displayed for the customers to see was a bit messy and that always weakens the tasting experience a bit. When the 10 pc nigiri came out, the fish looked pretty flavorful. Although, when it came time to eating it, all of the nigiri seemed like it was almost room temperature and the consistency of the fish was very chewy. There was also a lot of rice that came with each nigiri, too much for my taste. The best fish from the 10 pc nigiri was the seared albacore and even though I'm a big fan on salmon, I didn't really enjoy the chewiness and temperature of the fish. It felt like it was the first time I was eating sushi and I knew I was eating raw fish and it felt like raw fish. Besides that, we also had the dragon roll. The dragon roll was standard and good. Disclaimer: I did try Ohshima only less than a week ago so that probably has skewed my rating of what good, fresh, flavorful, fish tastes like? Stopped by for an Early Dinner with Family and must say Mighty Tasty! We started off with a Scallop Roll and California Roll as Appetizers! My niece had Edamame! Both were delicious! As Entrees my Brother had the Tempura Combo with Shrimp and Vegetables, I had the Beef Curry, and my mom had the Hamachi Collar with Rice! All the entrees came with Miso Soup and Salad! I've been told that this place does a lot of gross business practices including reusing the flowers from past customer's dishes for incoming orders and not using gloves. Not a safe place to eat. After getting sick from the udon yaki i think its safe to say i'm not going to come back here. Most people will come to eat here thinking the food is authentic but in reality its just a quick cash grab at the expense of the consumer's interests. Sushi Kara is our favorite local and go to for sushi. We have gotten take out multiple times since March and have never been disappointed. We have tried their lunch specials on the weekend and have gotten dinner throughout the week. Always amazing service and was one of our favorite date night spots pre covid. I wish this place was better because we are within walking distance, but I'd rather spend more $ and drive to Sushi Kinoya or Sushi On Fire all the way down in Belmont Shore instead of going back to this joint. The menu leaves a lot to be desired in terms of rolls; All of them are pretty similar in that they have one or more of the following: spicy tuna, imitation crab, or deep fried shrimp. I don't usually comment on service but it was piss poor to say the least. We were gonna ask her what she recommended but it was clear she wasn't in the mood. I'm not sure I've ever had a Sushi joint put out such bland, lifeless Edamame... but Sushi Kara definitely takes the cake for worst edamame in Southern California. All in all, you can't pay us to come back here again because we actually had to stop and pick up food somewhere else on the way home. Lesson learned. Eaten there for years because it's local. It's usually mediocre but last night was awful. Plumbing problems so all food was served on plastic plates which made miso soup very unappetizing. I would love to make my review about their food however; we never got to order anything. The reason is the service, more like lack of service. My husband and I was greeted by one of their server's in a less than welcoming attitude. She pointed to a table in the middle of a the restaurant for us to take. I told her I don't feel comfortable sitting in the middle. She copped an attitude with us while pointing to a dirty table in the corner, saying" I need to clean that table before you can sit there ". We got that table and waited for someone to give us a menu. While waiting, another party came in and was sat at that middle table. Immediately, that same, not so charming, server came to the table with menus and silverware for that new party. She even looked at us while doing it. We sat there for a few more minutes before getting up to leave. We couldn't believe she blatantly did that to us. If you want to eat at a place that doesn't care if their customer's are comfortable and happy with the service, then this place is for you. This review is LONG overdue! My sister and I have become regulars at Sushi Kara, going if not once every week, at least every 2 weeks. The staff is always super friendly, accommodating, and efficient. We've never had to wait to be seated- mind you, there's only been 2/3 of us at most. There's typically always open seating; even when they are on the busier side. Never a problem getting a seat, and we've come during multiple hours of the day, slow hours and peak. The owner of the restaurant has always been, and continues to be extremely humble, welcoming, and generous. He always greets us when we walk in, and checks to see how we've been since we last saw him. The menu has lots to offer. Ive lately been more into sashimi than regular sushi rolls, however, I can honestly say, I've had nearly every single roll on the menu- and they're ALL delicious! And they prepare them so quickly- so you're never left waiting too long to eat. My sister and I always, ALWAYS get the Spicy Poke Tuna appetizer. Crunchy rice, with spicy tuna on top. This, is literally heaven in a bowl. I could just eat the rice itself. But the tuna, I'm certain it's red butter. The fish is top quality, and the flavor is spot on! Probably my favorite dish. The Chirashi bowl is another usual order of ours. Select sashimi slices topped on a bed of rice. Simple and delicious. This comes with a side salad and miso soup. You can substitute either or if you'd like. For instance, we'd prefer the soup, so we get 2 misos rather than a miso and side salad. So lucky to have found Sushi Kara years ago! read more

Prices range from $10 - $15 depending how many pieces of sushi. Reasonably priced without sacrificing the quality of the fish. I like to add a salmon skin hand roll at the end of my meal which is stuffed with big portion of salmon skin and not all rice like other places. Service is always friendly and attentive. Rudest service ever! The waitress ended up knocking into my fiance's little dish of soy sauce, knocking it over onto the table as she tried to put another plate down on our table, and then she laughed about knocking over the soy sauce and didn't apologize. Really? This was so ridiculous because otherwise, I really liked the food. It was super fresh, but the service here is terrible. I won't be back because of that. Regardless, I will describe my experience. I came here after coming back to southern California after being away for work a few days. I literally got off my plane, hungry, and my fiance and I decided to try this place. We used to come to this location when it was called "Sakura Sushi" and I thought it was okay, but my fiance was a huge fan of the previous sushi place at this location. We walked in, and the first thing I noticed were the silkscreened paintings on the art as well as the for sale signs all over displaying the price for the paintings. I really think that's in poor taste. As a customer, I would rather not walk into a restaurant full of advertisements that aren't for the food. We took a while to order because we noticed that a lot of the rolls have spicy mayo in them, but in the end, we just decided to order the rolls we wanted and ask for spicy mayo on the side as opposed to in the roll (for the rolls not to be drowned in spicy mayo like a lot of Americanized sushi places too). This kind of baffled out waitress, I guess, because she kind of gave us the run around when we asked if it was possible to have it on the side. Eventually though, she said yes. We ordered the 911 roll (spicy tuna and avocado on top) with spicy mayo on the side as opposed to in the roll, the candy roll (deep fried shrimp, crab, and avocado with salmon and tuna on top), and the paradise roll (spicy tuna roll with tuna and salmon on top) with spicy mayo on the side. We asked our waitress if we could keep a menu so that later, we could order another roll, and she obliged. Our waitress delivered the 911 and candy rolls at the same time. However, she later come back with the paradise roll. She tried to clear room on our table by moving some of the plates around, but she totally crashed into my fiance's little soy sauce dish and knocked it over onto the table and on him a little bit. She did not apologize for doing this nor did she offer extra napkins to help clean up her spill, much less clean it up herself. I kid you not, but she laughed. She made no attempt to convey that she was sorry for accidentally spilling the soy sauce and no acknowledgment from it. This was really frustrating. Despite the waitress being rude, the rolls were pretty well prepared. Decent ratio of fish to rice. The rolls kind of fell apart, but the fish was fresh. Overall, I enjoyed the food, but the service got worse. When the waitress first delivered our rolls, she asked if we wanted to order more rolls, but we said not yet because we hadn't even eaten yet. How could we possibly know if we would be hungry after splitting 3 rolls if we hadn't even started eating them yet? Regardless, we told her we weren't sure yet. When we were halfway done with eating our rolls, the waitress came, in the middle of us still eating, and dropped off the check. Really? We told her that we were probably going to end up ordering more, and she drops off the check while we are still eating, when we are still no where close to being done with our meal. It was insanely rude. She also stopped refilling our water glasses and never came back for us to say that hey... we wanted to order more food. Despite how good the food was, I will never come back here due to the horrendous service from a person who should definitely not be a waitress. They have an AWESOME lunch special but their dinner special is rough-mcgruff on the wallet. My boyfriend and I came here because of their super awesome Lunch special (5 mini-handrolls for $8 bucks is a killer deal! plus the mini handrolls aren't that mini!) but was severely surprised on the dinner cost. I'm also sure that the sushi chef's are Korean because... You can just tell after you've been around enough different types of Asians. The sushi here is definitely delicious. THICK cuts of Sashimi from the chef's special and really really tasty baked mussels. Their rolls are pretty huge too. The service however is somewhat on and off depending who you get, but like most people not everyone has a good day. Overall, I can't really say too much about Sushi restaurants as most of them I've encountered are somewhat similar to each other. I've also noticed that there is a distinct difference in Japanese owned and Korean owned sushi restaurants... Korean = have lots of fried rolls (eg. the entire roll is fried), while the Japanese owned restaurants stay relatively traditional to what types they make. I personally would not come back because my boyfriend and I could've used the $80 we spent at this restaurant and spend it at another sushi restaurant where we can choose as much as we want, what ever we want as well as how much we wanted from another place that charges $25 per person. Sushi Kara? More like my Kara (face) was full of Sushi! I was so hungry after school and had been craving sushi so I thought I'd hit up this place since it was next to the 405 and on my way home. "Whaat?" Was my initial reaction because this place was dead, except for two ladies at the sushi bar. I noticed they were getting their grub on and everything they were eating looked really delicious. Later, I found out they were regulars, they knew the sushi chef on a first name basis. Anyway, they bring you a menu and sushi list to check what you want. Their lunch special had just ended (3pm I believe) so I didn't get any specials. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura rolls & Salmon w/ Tuna rolls. The Shrimp Tempura rolls were really good, I love the eel sauce and the fried fish eggs on top were really good and crunchy. Yummy! The Salmon w/ Tuna didn't disappoint either, presentation and taste was between an A-/B+ I had about two left and I was beginning to feel full! The sushi chef kept looking at my plate and asked how everything tasted, which I thought was cool, especially since I was sitting at the bar, a little conversation I appreciate. He was kind enough to make me a spicy tuna roll wrapped (it was cone shaped and huge) for free! I guess this place not being busy has it perks, huh. I paid roughly about $25 for two plates of rolls (about 8pcs each) and Miso soup. I also overheard the ladies talking about birthdays and one of them mentioned their birthday was on October 22nd, I dropped my chopsticks and yelled "SHUTUP! ME TOO!" Handsdown favorite place to go for simple rolls. I first fell in love with this place when I found out about their salmon avocado rolls. The prices have gone up over the years, but the quality is still amazing compared to their inexpensive price. Sushi Kara has awesome lunch special deals. My favorite is the two regular roll special for $8, and it comes with a miso soup and small salad! My faaaavoriteee rolls are the scallop roll and philly roll. The first sushi place I ate at my freshmen year and the only sushi place in long beach I ever went to while i attended CSULB (as far as I can remember). Loved all the sushi and tried almost all of it. I always got the spicy seafood yaki udon. The only thing about the udon is its not listed under their take out menu.
