The food is great, but I found a hair in my sushi 3 out of the last 4 times I've been here. Won't be back. Such a shame.

We LOVE this place!! My fiance and I come here at least once a week and they never let us down. We try to order different things when we go there and everything is always delicious. Reading other reviews people are complaining about the service but it really isn't that bad. On a busy day there may be about 3 servers but you can tell they do the best they can. Patience goes a long way. If you see that the restaurant is busy OBVIOUSLY the service might be a little slower. Give them the benefit of the doubt, the food is great and the people are always so nice. read more

I was initially excited to eat at Sushi Kara after seeing its high ratings on yelp. I came in with my boyfriend and friend on a Saturday afternoon. There were only 2 other parties there so it was pretty empty. They immediately seated us, plopped down the menus, and took our drink orders but the servers left us alone for a good amount of time after that. Ten minutes later a white couple came in and it was clear how differently they treated them. The servers were much more attentive to them and a couple minutes after they came back with their drinks the waiter took their order. This wasn't a big deal because my group was still deciding what to get but when one of the waiters finally checked in on us I asked him if the lunch specials were still available. He answered pretty rudely and walked away. When we placed our order and got our food they continued to only check on the white couple while ignoring our table. My boyfriend, friend, and I are Asian and we look younger than we actually are so I guess they might have assumed we wouldn't tip well or had some bias towards us. I don't hold waiters to unrealistic standards of service either but it was obvious that we were not a priority of theirs. We ordered the crunchy tuna roll, volcano roll, paradise roll, and cucumber crab salad. -First off, the cucumber salad tasted pretty good but they placed a huge chunk of white radish in the middle to make the salad make is seem like there was more imitation crab than there actually was. The salad felt more like a soup with a sprinkle of crab and cucumbers. I'm not sure if that's normal but it was misleading and disappointing. -We also tried the volcano roll which was disappointing. The baked spicy tuna on top of the volcano roll tasted like a fishy meat loaf... and the roll did not stay together at all. -The crunchy tuna roll was alright. They mixed an overwhelming amount of crunch with the tuna so it ended up overpowering the roll. I couldn't taste the fish at all. -On an opposite note, the paradise roll was actually good. I didn't have any problems with it. The salmon and tuna on top were fresh and the spicy tuna inside was nice and spicy. Other reviews raved about good service and great food but honestly I didn't experience that at Kara. I'll probably try it one more time and make a final decision on this place. The price is consistent with most sushi places. Coming in for the lunch special would probably make the trip more worthwhile and hopefully service won't be as bad. The roll that I specifically ordered was good so maybe next time I'll try out some other options too. Oh yeah, it would be helpful if the menus had pictures of some or all of the rolls. Yelp does help since individuals post pictures so I already had some idea of what I wanted. One of my group members, on the other hand, definitely had a problem choosing without them. read more

Never had any anything bad here. Always quality. Favorites are the Long Beach roll, surprise roll, bamboo roll, Washington roll, crunchy spicy tuna roll, and in-n-out rolls. Also had the curry which was yummy. Great service 95% of the time too. Good thing I don't live closer or I might eat there daily. read more

Awesome spot, came in with a friend and sat at the bar. The chef was super friendly and started putting out plates Omakase style for us, paired some nigiri with sashimi and some with fried prawn heads or fried fish. This is by far one of the best sushi places in Long Beach. The prices are reasonable and the taste is awesome! The waitress/ servers are very polite, quick, and friendly. They greet you with a smile as soon as you enter. Compared to other sushi places, there are many choices for the special rolls but I only tried so far four of them. So far, they were all very delicious. The fish were very fresh, too! Totally satisfied!! We went to visit the restaurant after reading the Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. The fish was very fresh and the service was great. You MUST sit at the bar and chat with the owners/sushi chefs. They are very hospitable and talk to you about the types of fish. We tried something different per his recommendation and loved it.Tuna Poke was awesome and Spanish Mackerel was delicious. The Plum Wine Ice Cream was a nice ending. 7/20/12 - We went there for a late lunch the three of us. At first we were the only people in there and then the place got filled up. Sorry to say there was only one waitress helping all of us so service was slow but she tried to do the best she could. The food was excellent though and well worth the wait. One person in my party had the spicy shrimp meal and it was excellent, other person in the party had undo noodle with shrimp tempura which they thought was great and I had the chicken Katsura which was nice side chicken breast with Japanese curry sauce all was very good. I loved the redo of the place also since new management has taken over. All in all a nice dining experience I we will go back. Price ranges are fairly reasonable for this day and age. read more

Good food. The only gripe I have is that the chef wants everything to be his way. Every little preference in the food (i.e. Salmon and Tuna only) is always rejected due to "Chef's choice..." I would give them 5 stars for their sushi but since the service is okay, 4 stars this time. I've been a long time customer of this place and their sushi never fails me. The chefs are very friendly especially Song, who is also the owner of the restaurant. I was here several months ago for a late dinner around 9 p.m. on a Sunday. I was so hungry that night and we had to wait for the first time because the restaurant was really busy. My boyfriend and I always sit at the bar, and they told us we had to wait for the spot. I was getting really hungry and I saw two people left the bar and instead of cleaning it up first, they cleaned up the tables first! We were the only party waiting there and they knew we wanted the bar. We waited for 15 minutes and they took forever to finally clean the bar. That was only because I came up to one of the waiters who only put his rag on the table and went around doing nothing. When he finally cleaned up the table, he didn't give us the menu right away, so I had to get the to go menu myself and gave the order to the chef directly. I think one of the chefs noticed I was upset so our orders came out fairly quickly. Maybe it was just a boo-boo because the waiters were new... So I decided to give them another chance since I really love their sushi. I came here several weeks ago with my boyfriend and his sisters, and we took the table instead of our usual bar spot. I think they hired more waiters since the restaurant has gotten a lot busier than before. The sushi was great as usual. We ordered Candy Roll, BSCR, and a couple other special rolls I forgot what. BSCR was the bomb! Candy Roll was my and my boyfriend's favorite and it still is! Everything was great up until the waiter was picking up our empty plates.. I was still working on the scallop pieces left on the plate and the waiter came out of nowhere, putting a stack of dirty plates from other tables onto our plate of scallops! We still had about 5 pieces of scallop and I was gonna eat those... :(((( Bummmer. He should have asked us if we were done with the plate before doing that... I was upset about wasting those scallops.... But, since this was my favorite sushi place, I still come here anyway. I came here again last week with my friends and we sat at the table instead of the bar. We went there on a Friday night and the restaurant was a little busy. We went there at 8 and left around 10 p.m. We ordered Baked Salmon Roll, Candy Roll, Bamboo Roll, Albacore Roll, and one other roll I can't recall the name. The first half of the time we were there was great; the waiters and waitress came up and asked us if we needed anything else, etc. Halfway through, my friend wanted to order one more roll, wasabi, and hot sake. I called our waiter and asked for the menu, which he gave right away. However, he never came back to take our order. Cmon, I asked for the menu because I wanted to order more. He finally passed by after 10 minutes and I asked him for the sake and wasabi, and I was holding the menu in the air, handing it to him because I wrote down my order on it. He didn't freaking take it! It was right there in front of his face and he just walked away. He came back to give us the hot sake and he immediately left without bringing us the wasabi or taking our order! We had to wait for 10 more minutes until finally a waitress passed by and I gave her the order and my friend had to order the wasabi again since that guy never gave it to us. I swear I think it was the same guy who stacked the dirty plates onto my plate last time and wasted my scallops! Despite my experience here.. Of course I would still come here. After all, I'm here for the food. I don't have any problem with the other waiters and waitresses nor the chefs. So.... 4 stars. read more

For westernized sushi, this place is great (4 stars). For authentic sushi this place is 3 stars. I had better sushi at Mitsuwa food court. The rolls are tasty and filling. My boyfriend is vegetarian and the chefs are so accommodating. They have a great happy hour and lunch special. They have just started to get busier. We were looking for a place to have a quick lunch on our way to LAX from OC....we looked on Yelp and liked the reviews...this was a home run. Easy access off the 405 fwy at Bellflower and easy access to get back on fwy. Didn't have to wait too long to get served, we were in and out within a half hour which is unfortunate we didn't have more time because we would have ordered more and had libations. read more
