Please note : this review is being written a couple minutes after eating my meal. I am staying at a nearby hotel and the restaurant was recommended by the front desk. I was excited to have some sushi this evening. My impression was that the food (and pricing) lwas above average for a Bay Area sushi spot The service was prompt, the selection and freshness of fish was very good, but their communication skills were poor (or they just didn't care). I was immediately offered miso soup and edamame - right when I was getting settled in my chair. I glanced around and saw that the majority of tables had the soup and edamame in front of them - so I said "yes please". I was more then surprised that that I was charged $7.50 for these two items. why? Because they offered them in a way and timing that a normal Nc rational diner would think they were complimentary - items that a majority of sushi bars provide complimentary when offered in a similar way. Why am I irritated? Because there are other appis that I would have selected other then average boiled and salted soy beans. And when I pointed this out to the manager (or owner) she said "she's new and training" and made no attempt to placate me. Right now you'll probably thinking I'm a petty jerk. I (and my dog) don't think so. I usually try to resolve a problem rather then write about it. But that failed so here it is in black and white. Would I come here again? There's something fishy going on here. I have reason to believe someone is trying to kill me. Just last night, my honey dreamboat, she goes to the Sushi-Ko to get us dinner. In the selection of sushi she brings home, there is a beautiful salmon nigiri (well, in truth, there are TWO beautiful salmon nigiri -- pay attention, this may become important as we sort out all of the details of this insidious attempt on my life). My honey dreamboat, she eats one of the beautiful salmon nigiri leaving the other untouched on the classy, clear plastic to-go container. Sushi, being a meal of selection (it's kind of like fish french fries), we chose one over the other, over the other, over the other, until arriving at the last one. Finally there it was: just the one, the final beautiful salmon nigiri. I took it, swam the fish in the soy, and it leapt whole into my mouth. One chew, two chews, then bones! Bones! Great big, throat blocking fishbones! Abandoning decorum in favor of oxygen, I plunged two fingers halfway down my esophagus and plucked the offending bones free. These things were the length of my pinky finger! Well, I'm not certain who tried to kill me, but I am certain there is a plot afoot. How could anyone say anything bad about this place? Listen. They are great. Seriously. You hear me? Good stuff. I have actually seen the hostess moving tables, trying to get large parties seated in a small place. She was going out of her way to make sure the could accomodate everyone. I have never waited more than five minutes here and the sushi has always been on par with some of the best I have had. The sushi guy's at the bar are so good and friendly. My friend and I often sit at the bar and enjoy our miso soup and sushi. The only down side is that it can be so busy that they get overcrowded and service suffers a wee bit but I don't mind. Its good stuff. I've been here a gazillion times and LOVE IT! Actually, its terrible. Don't go there during the week between 5-8 and go much earlier in the day. Yeah, thats it. It's ok. Not very veggie friendly. Seating is not very intimate if you're there to talk to friends - it's almost cafeteria style with smaller tables. Staff is ok. Service is ok. Food is ok. Ambience is meh. All around ok. You're safe to eat here - but I would rather go to Brew co. That's because of the beer though - not the food. C+ grade. I took one more star away because having the friend of someone who works here attack my review made me never want to go back to Sushi Ko again. I stopped eating here.. I had gone for lunch, got a bento box with "fresh fish" and when the fish came it stunk. I tried to take a bite, but it had a horrible chemical taste so I secretly spit it out into my napkin. It was un-eatable. I very kindly told the waitress that I could not eat the fish and asked if she could just substitute some vegetables instead. She said no she could not do that, but I could talk to the owner. When the owner came over she said "NO!" "You ordered the fish, you get the fish, that's it!" I told her that I could not afford to get sick and that I worked in a health facility across the street and that all of our employees as well as patients would not be referred to this business if they were going to put people in jeopardy. The owner laughed and yelled at me to "Pay the bill, and get out," she actually said "I don't care about YOU and your business!" I said, "You want me to pay for something I can not eat?" She said "Pay the bill and don't come back". Wow! It was humiliating....Why so angry? I thought. I'm the nicest person I know. It wasn't just a bad day, she had real hate, and contempt in her eyes. It was unnerving. Needless to say I never went back. We have spent a lot of money eating at the other restaurants though in The Larkspur Country Mart which are very good, and never made me feel stupid or embarrassed in front of a room of people. MORE IMPORTANTLY: This week we paid for a very important consultant, Barry, to fly out from Florida and work with us. Unfortunately he went to this establishment before I could warn him, (the night before last, Thursday 12/5/13) after eating the sushi he got horrible stomach cramps and was violently sick while staying at the Courtyard Marriott. I just moved to the area and wanted to find a nearby sushi restaurant and came across Sushi Ko for a date night. Usually I will go at least twice before writing anything on yelp but the service was so poor and food was so disappointing that I will not ever return. After we got a seat and drinks another friendly couple sat beside us a few minutes later. We ordered edamame, seaweed salad, coke, sake bottle, and our 4 rolls all at that time. After about 5 minutes the apps arrived for our neighbors, 10 mins later we got ours - whatever. The seaweed salad was very good. A few minutes after that our neighbors received their dinner...then they finished their dinner...then we asked where our food was - 30 mins after ordering now- find out - misplaced order. Okay, whatever... Asked for a refill of coke by the bus boy, and two waitresses, not once but twice...still no coke. Fifteen minutes later - Asked again but I guess the order was misplaced again. Must be leprechauns... Neighbors have now signed check and out the door. Ten to fifteen new customers have been seated and finishing dinner. Now I am frustrated and convinced them to please expedite the process. One of 4 rolls came to the table - tempura was bland, size was disappointing, fish was room temp. Ten minutes later, the others arrived. Spicy tuna was very bad - kind of like tuna plus franks hot sauce in a blender jammed two pencil widths thick of fish into a wrap (total width of a quarter). Coke refill finally arrived (which was billed for another after what we understood was bottomless - ok whatever) on the third round. We have now missed our movie time - lovely. My chief complaints with the food were a lack of fish and poor temperature. Not worth the price. The rainbow roll had fish on top but skin was still on a few pieces. No apologies by the staff at any point. After I signed the bill it was literally yanked out from under me - was really weird. Anyways, too bizarre for me and if I want Luke warm fish it will be from right out of the ocean on a fishing boat. Let me explain my rating right up front; this place has 4-star food, but 2-star service (at best). I live nearby and my kids love Japanese food, so we're regulars. This gives us a fairly solid read of the full breadth of the place. The sashimi is fresh and flavorful. The sushi rolls, while fairly typical, are well executed and make for a great balance of flavors. The teriyaki and other hot dishes are great; they clearly use the right fresh ingredients and prepare it well. However, good luck getting anything that resembles good service from the wait staff. I've had to flag someone down to get waited on, have had orders missing meals for members of my table, have been flat out ignored at the sushi bar, and lots of other smaller issues. The terrible service at the typically high Marin prices really ruins the place. It's a real shame. read more

I love sushi. I eat sushi about 150 meals a year. I work across the street from Sushi Ko and I eat here twice out of the 150 meals. They charge for soda refills when the glasses are not very big and come with lots of ice. I unrolled the California roll I received - I am pretty sure that I should be able to find crab in it. I received salad with dressing and fish with the sauce missing when I asked for the salad dressing on the side. They made an extra $1.95 charging me for a soda refill and they miss out on my business the other 148 our of 150 meals I eat sushi - hope it is worth it to them. read more

Located in Larkspur Landing, across from the Courtyard by Marriot, Sushi Ko has little competition in the immediate area. And that's a good thing, for them, but not for you. While it took little time to seat me, I was given PLENTY of time to peruse the somewhat limited menu. BY plenty of time, I mean at least 20 minutes, which was surprising, given that it was not that busy (it was a Thursday night). I ordered spicy green mussels, hamachi & cucumber roll, and a tuna & avocado roll. Spicy mussels generally take a little longer, however, since it was an appetizer, I would have expected the staff to hold my sushi order until the mussels had arrived. However, my sushi arrived first, followed by the mussels, after quite some time. While the sushi rice was pretty good, as was the hamachi, the tuna had clearly been "tartared" (finely chopped, as is for a spicy tuna hand roll) prior to being rolled, and as a result, had a mushy and unappetizing texture. The spicy mussels were the real let down. Over cooked and rubbery, dressed with an oily red chili sauce, they were almost inedible. With the food, I ordered a large Sapporo - almost impossible to ruin, unless you serve it with a tiny water glass, which they did. In fact, the water delivered to other tables (none delivered to me, perhaps I had to request water?!) came in glasses larger than the one I was given for the Sapporo. My final $36 tab was incredibly overpriced considering slow service and poor quality. As I said at the beginning, Sushi Ko has little competition in the immediate area, and it's a shame. I love sushi rolls. I like the presentations, the flavors, the endless configurations and creativity. If you enjoy rolls this is probably not the place for you. The fish is fresh. It's quiet decent! Quality presentation and decent size portions of lots of traditional Japanese sushi and bento combinations. All looked fresh! I felt right at home at this restaurant. Here on business, dining options were limited to whatever we were able to find in or around the hotel. Luckily for us, we found Sushi-Ko. Located in a strip mall, don't let the location fool you. Tucked away inside is a great local sushi spot with a friendly staff. Seated at the bar, warm hand towels and utensils were immediately placed in front of us by our waitress. The sushi chefs were friendly, giving us recommendations on places to go and things to do while we were in Larkspur. The fish here is great, with my favorite of the night being their hamachi and mirugai. It's hard for me to find mirugai (aka gooey duck/giant clam) on a regular basis, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the regular menu here. The uni we had was excellent, and told the chefs as much. When we ordered the chefs special on our last visit here, we were grateful to see the inclusion of uni on our sashimi platter. The sake menu has the usual suspects (hot sake, nigori, otokoyama), but we had a cold sake whose name is escaping me, but was high in alcohol content, extremely smooth, and came recommended by the chefs. This is the sister restaurant of the 5 star Robata Grill in Mill Valley http://www.yelp.com/biz/robata-grill-and-sushi-mill-valley Between the two, this location doesn't get the best fish (as the Mill Valley patrons are willing to pay for the higher quality), and therefore it charges less for Sushi. Since they have common ownership, you can use your annual Nori Club card to get 10% off your meal. I like to go to this location for lunch. I'll get the Soba Noodle Soup with Vegetables. It's a simple, inexpensive item, which is so flavorful and filling. Plus, soba noodles are really healthy for you. They serve it with a shaker of Japanese spices on the side. Though I like the flavor of the spices, they never disolve into the soup, so if you add too much, you're going to get a fair amount of grit in your throat. Their Salmon Teriyaki lunch plate is also good. read more

Decent sushi in a cute little setting. We went to Sushi-Ko for our NYE pre-party dinner. We made reservations for eight and were very surprised by the ability of the restaurant to even accommodate eight people within the tiny restaurant. We ordered warm hot house Sake, which was fantastic. It just ran smoothly down your through, very good. We also ordered 3 sushi rolls which for two big sushi eaters like us, it wasn't enough. For 3 rolls and a bottle of Sake the tab came out to be $45. Ya... expensive in my book. Though I did enjoy the environment and the company, I don't think I'd come back to Sushi-Ko for sushi specifically. read more

My friend loves this restaurant and brought me here on a Friday night. The restaurant is a bit small and felt a little cramped. It was packed but the wait wasn't too long. We got seated at the bar and were able to order quickly. The food came fast - not sure if it's because my friend knows the chefs, but no complaints! We ordered oysters with quail egg and uni (I think it's the chef's special), which was awesome! Had a mix of the sashimi (Hamachi, Salmon and Tako) and it was all very fresh. We also had the Uni Nigiri. The look of it wasn't very appetizing but it tasted great. We finished off with a roll that was recommended by the chef. Not sure what it was but it was huge, packed and delicious. Should've asked for the name of it! Definitely have to try the Ohyama Sake - very smooth and easy to drink. We made friends with the couple next to us and even shared some of our sake and sushi roll with them and they loved it. The drive was worth it! Will certainly visit again. read more

One of our favorite places in the Larkspur/Corte Madera area to grab lunch or dinner! Our favorite rolls are the Alaskan roll (simple & tasty), the Dragon roll (full & sweet), and the Dynamite roll (fresh & spicy). We usually love "the Philadelphia roll", however we weren't too fond of the smoked salmon. I have never ordered the edamame, but when it goes by it is a very generous portion. If you want to drink, they have a good selection of beer--Sapporo is always my favorite--and sake. The downside is parking, but that isn't the restaurant's fault. Larkspur Landing needs to work on better parking for all of their restaurants. Don't try going right after work or during the lunch rush, due to traffic going to and from the East Bay as well as people getting off the ferry. read more

I don't know what I was thinking. This place was a HUGE disappointment, despite the "raving" reviews. First of all, the tables were sticky. Sheesh, wipe your tables! The food? Or should I say, lack of food? The sushi roll was minuscule, especially for the price, and the ingredients lacked good solid flavors. In most places, the rolls can almost be a meal in themselves, but def not here. My bf got the steak teriyaki box, which also lacked flavors. Half of his plate was something resembling a salad. The best thing on his plate were the 2 shrimp tempura. Oh yea, now that I remember, we also got the calamari appetizer (again, extremely small portion), which was of course, chewy. The strangest thing here is getting no kind of starter, a soup or salad, which is what many Japanese places do and I enjoy it. Or at least give me some tea. You overcharge enough to at least give me some good tea! For the prices this place charges, they sure do give you small portions of food and the food that you do get is of cheap quality. There was 4 of us and we ordered $120 worth of food after tax/tip. We got like 8-10 things lol. It was a good deal, but alas, only a mediocre meal. Sashimi galore. Two bentos (two items). Asahi x 2 633 ml and 1 premium sake for the four of us. Man, we ordered a crap ton of food. The only stand outs though were the: Obamahama -GET IT. Cherry Blossom Roll- Yum! &....that's it. Do not bother to try the tonkatsu, tempura, hamachi, nor sashimi 16 piece special. The salmon came out slightly frozen, which was quite displeasing to my friends' and my discerning taste buds. Tsk tsk. When you pay that much for sashimi you except something good. But alas. It was not. Also, the toro was like whatever. Do not get! I suppose the bento for $10.25 (2 items) is a good deal though. You get miso and 3 california rolls in addition to your bento. I do regret not ordering my fave tamago sushi, a marker (in my opinion) to compare Japanese restaurants. Boo. Someone else tell me how it is. A plus was definitely the service. Ordered their beef teriyaki/tempura combo lunch special. I was going to order off their main sushi menu but nothing I saw grabbed me. I can tell the menu is catered to the "area". The beef teriyaki was pretty good, beef was nice and tender. The tempura was ok, just a bit oily. I ended up killing the entire plate except a half eaten tempura broccoli. Like onion rings. We sent it back. They incredulously couldn't believe we didn't enjoy it, said it couldn't come off the bill and asked if we wanted to take it home... The scallops were breaded, and it didn't stick (were they frozen?) and not our favorite either. Rolls were ok, but not true SF quality. Sushi-Ko is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire bay area. Between Sushi-Ko and Zushi Puzzle, my hubby and I are able to satisfy our weekly fresh fish cravings. First of all, the hostess (Shino) is so incredibly friendly, she makes you feel like family. She remembers your face, and will remember your name, and really does whatever she can to make sure you enjoy your meal while you are there. The food. The food is absolutely incredible. The hamachi kama is unbelievable. I brought a group of friends here once and we picked at it like vultures. The agadashi tofu is prepared just the way I like it - with soft tofu and the flakey cuttlefish shreds - great texture and taste. The Halibut cheek is good (but not as good as the hamachi kama) Toro is great. Uni is always fresh. And the Ama Ebi here is better than any other place in the bay area. They fry their heads to perfection. Friends of mine who were squeamish when the heads first arrived at the table didn't regret trying it the least. As for maki sushi, the spicy crunchy tuna is always a decent dish to add to your meal. If you want something different, try the mushroom salad for a tasty treat. My only criticism is that the variety of nigiri isn't as big as some of the restaurants in the city. When it comes to sushi in Marin, it really doesn't get any better than this. Overpriced for what it is. A co-worker and I had a $80 lunch and I don't feel like we got that much food. They don't give refills on soda, so you literally have to buy each fountain soda you drink. What a rip off! Plus there were items not on the roll description that ended up in my rolls...not good for someone slightly on the picky side. I was at a b-day party here a few years back and as I was one of the last ones to leave, was asked by the hostess if there was anything wrong with the service because the tip was not very much. First time trying this place out. Just got 100 bucks of takeout. The miso soup and seaweed salad containers were barely half full. The rolls were tiny. The 12 "kids" portion of chicken teriyaki consisted of 6 small strips of chicken and an orange slice. No rice, no veggies. Those are extra apparently. The fish wasn't bad, but the place is a rip off. Maybe it's the County Mart rent. For the same price we could have gone to Sushi Ran which is far better. We won't make the same mistake twice. read more

This place has great food-- I have to give it that. Expensive, but really good. The sushi was great, too-- I recommend the Cruncy Spicy Tuna roll. Atmosphere was not the best. I mean, it is architectually beautiful; it's the lighting that needs some help. A certain waitress there needs some help as well, I'm afraid. Me: "Are the soba noodles hot?" Her: "Yes, they are." Me: "Great- I'll have the soba noodles with veggies. Thanks." I get my food: Udon noodles. NOT A BIG DEAL. I simply say, "Oh, I'm sorry, but I ordered soba." She gave me a look to kill. "You said Udon." I looked quizically at my boyfriend, and he said, "No, I remember, she asked if the soba noodles were hot, and then ordered them." She COULD have just said, "Oh, I'm sorry, I must have heard you wrong," like any other server would have said to shrug off a pain-in-the-ass customer, but she CONTINUED to challenge me!! "You asked if the UDON noodles were hot." I don't even know how we FINALLY got around to her taking my bowl back, but I DO know that she even rolled her eyes at me as she did so.
