The specialty rolls are different and they seem to be trying to do something unique and they should be applauded for that. These things are worth a try. Many of them have nothing to do with fish. The Dominican fried rice is tasty but sized like a side. It is literally the rice you would find in a small rice bowl. Paired with two rolls, I was still somewhat unfufilled. The El rey is pretty cool. Drinks were ok. I went to wash my hands and the soap bottle was basically water put into the dying bottle. Bathroom was otherwise fine, clean and had towels. There was no problem paying by credit card. Gratuity was added to the check. Not sure why, but I'm ok with that. What gave me pause was the credit card bill being returned without the original receipt and a simple total with a blank gratuity line and no reflection that a gratuity had been previously assessed. I won't return because the food was just ok, and not worth all I paid for 2 people and a voucher worth $40 with specific rules on how to use. My original place was way better and cheaper for a party of two, I have been there twice now, by myself and with my daughter. Never once playing that much and if I did, wouldn't be upset because their food was worth it. I realized I made a few errors in my last post. I decided on trying this place out because my GF found a deal on Groupon. After reading the reviews on this place I was a little hesitant, to say the least, but she had been here before so she vouched for the place. You either get to use your Groupon deal and pay for full price drinks or just go for happy hour, you can not combine. We decided on saving the Groupon deal for another time and did the happy hour instead. We ordered the Passion Fruit Mojito pitcher was a little too sweet but good and Red Sangria Pitcher was good with blueberries and apples in it. They also gave us two rounds of shots of passion fruit and tequila on the house which was sweet. We ordered our food we started with apps Chicken Katsu Bites which was delicious and the Gyoza which was also good, after that we order the fusion rolls that didn't take that long to come out. We had the El Ninja Roll, Uptown Roll, Mambo Special Roll, and the Quisqueya Roll all were amazing and delicious. Our waiter would come and check up on us frequently also which is important to add because most of the yelp reviews state how bad the service is, we didn't notice. They also have hookah which is OK, they only have one flavor which is star-buzz mint which is basic but what can you do and they use the quick light coals (3 kings coals) and anyone that's a hookah head knows is trash. Walking in, the place looks like a club with odd lighting. The tables are pretty close together and I just couldn't get comfortable with the ambience of the place. The food was odd to me. It's a mix of Latin and Japanese but the flavours just didn't quite meld for me. We had a few rolls and I tried their Shrimp Mofongitos which were OK. I can't remember the names of the rolls but one was wrapped with a tortilla. Yea. I don't know. We've come here twice and I'm OK to not go back. It's a popular place but you can't please everyone. Food: Our food took SOOO long to arrive to the table, and we were questioning why the issue because the place was half empty. I dined here two months ago and had the worst experience possible the waitress did not inform us the restrictions on the groupon. Food is great but terrible service and they rob their customers and lie to them and bullshit them. Save your money and don't go. First, a number of 13 adults paid a bill, there was money left over to be returned totaling 30 or so dollars. They magically disappeared. Which we argued about and got told "Uh I already put the money in the cashier I can't take it out" okay. Second, we called to make a reservation for 14 people. We were met with constant dropped and ignored calls, 15 calls in total and every time some girl answered w attitude like if we were a bother. Imagine that...getting annoyed 14 people will come spend money on you Anyway when we brought this up to our server who's name I think is Carlos or whatever, his excuse was "sorry my boss is just a bitch like that" Okay? And? You rather lose customers cus you can't tell your boss stop being rude so you won't lose customers? We went for the Happy hour which included a free hookah before 7 pm. We were there at 5:00pm. They asked for ID for us to smoke...21 and over apparently. But they didn't ID me in March or June when I went and smoked hookah there. 4th: We were there at 5:00 pm. It wasn't until 7:40 ish that we got our orders taken when the rest of our party got there at 6:30. AND on top of that we OURSELVES had to put the tables together in a corner of the restaurant because they didnt reserve tables for us which they said they would do. And then the infamous "we only do cash" bullshit...but just last time I went in June they said they could take card but in March said only cash. Like please decide what method of payment you're going to accept. In conclusion: that place is so trash. They don't care about their customers which is sad cus their food is bomb. read more
