Party of 6 with a reservation. They wanted to seat us directly in front of the front doors. Finally sat us in the back but then moved us to the back corner to seat another party of 6. Staff was inattentive, we had to go looking for our waitress. Food took 2 hours to come out and was room temperature (5 of the 6 dinners were steak). The lights above our table blew out in the middle of our meal so we sat in the dark for the remainder of our meal. We were told there was no manager and when we saw one she finally agreed to discount our $500 bill, which included an automatic 18% gratuity which we would not have left since the service and food was horrible. read more

After attending this place numerous times, this has to be the first time i have to write a review, First we order a pitcher and after trying it, we immediately let the waitress that it was not good, extremely sweet for an alcoholic drink.and expressed that we wanted to change it for something else, the waitress returned numerous times to our table and did nothing about it. Even made a comment of " youre not going to drink it" and smiled. And our reply was " no it is not good at all" and nothing was done about it. Towards the very end of our meal the waitress tells us the system is down and that they cant take cards that at the time only cash is being taken. We let them know AGAiN that the pitcher we ordered needed to either be replaced or be taken off our bill. We had no problem paying for the pitcher as long it was enjoyable. Long and behold out of nowhere the credit machine was working after insisting that we did not have CASH, it was a ploy by the establisment being that it was a sunday and the business was slow. Customer service 101, customer is never inconvenienced. I came here to have a good time and enjoy this place as i have done numerous times before. We drove 5 hours to visit for my 30th. This place didn't disappoint. The flavor was astonishing. This is a perfect fusion of Asian and Latin foods. I was given a Groupon as a gift for this place which also required I create a yelp account and then making a reservation. So, here I am. Seems like a lot of things just to come to a place that I've never really heard of before. After doing all this when I presented the groupon I was still told the manager "doesn't like to take these" The waitress also attempted to talk me out of a lychee martini because "it has a weird flavor" The restaurant also has a weird set up as you enter in the center of the dining area. The whole thing was just an odd experience. PS: this restaurant is too small to have hookah and not disturb other diners. Also not sure why small children were there, running around, during happy hour ???? We ordered the calamari as an appetizer. It was seasoned with saffron/Sazon (not sure) and fried this was good. Then we ordered a few sushi rolls id say the mixture of sweet plantain and sushi on the Latin lover is a way more odd flavor than lychee. and sushi should never be deep fried that blend on the dynamite roll was also strange. If you separate the plantain from the roll it's pretty good. Just not together. We also ordered a chocolate tres leche cake. It was ok. Good effort to try to blend Latin and Japanese culture, but I don't love fusion restaurants and this one is not executed correctly. I am so on the fence about coming back. I would come back if friends from the area really wanted to. But it's out of the way for me so definitely wouldn't be in this part of town regularly. It's not real sushi to me. And to be honest I prefer to eat my sushi without any type of "fusion." But I used my Groupon and my friends money didn't go to waste. When I was there last time my experience was horrible. We purchased a Groupon and we also did happy hour but weren't notified until the bill came that it was either one or the other. The waitress...who later said she was the manager was very rude and told us don't ever come back again...felt a little discriminatory but I've been coming here since it opened and I would like to return for a celebratory event with friends. Exited to try a new sushi place in the heights! However, it's another Dominican "fusion" sushi place...womp womp womp.... Dominican fusion sushi usually means a lot of pork and plantains yet little flavor. I am sad to say that sushi mambo was no different. However, there were some highlights that I will address: 1. Drinks were strong 2. Wasabi was strong and thank god because these rolls needed help 3. Rice was soft...lol I'm searching here A lot of people like this kind of sushi, but I prefer the traditional stuff. The sushi just tastes completely different when there's a "fusion" element to it. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't "sushi" enough for me. I do recommend the el Dario roll because it comes w jalepeño on top which lends a lot of kick, and the rainbow roll was good enough for a traditional roll. They added an 18% gratuity for 2 people, as only a Dominican restaurant in the heights will do. I just don't really like that. I probably won't be back because when I want sushi, I go hard and want the real thing! The only reason that they're getting two stars is because of the food, which was pretty good with a lovely presentation. The drinks were also good, and pretty strong. NOW, for the bad stuff. My cousin and I came here on a Saturday night -- NO ONE greeted us after just standing there for a while, so we decided to sit at the bar. Once sitting, AGAIN, no one even acknowledged us. We sat there for over 10 minutes before anyone even walked over to take our order. They took so long that we were able to put in our drink, appetizer and food orders at once. It took them forever to bring our drinks and mine came back wrong, although our bartender did fix it. We were impressed with our food, until we realized that we were charged an automatic 18% gratuity for only TWO people! Unbelievable. This place is fantastic. I went based on a personal recommendation and pictures of the food I saw on Ig. The chef, known as "El Ninja" is super friendly and came to our table. He prepared a large platter with different fusion rolls (morirsoñando, crunchy, mambo special, cheeseburger). The dessert was a surprise. I have to say everything we ate was exquisite. From taste, to freshness to decor, EVERYTHING. I also noticed that he went to other tables and catered to most customers' requests. Happy hour drinks were amazing as well. Another Uptown joint, another Japanese/Dominican fusion spot. Very similar to Mama Sushi, except Mama Sushi is a lil more polished in every sense... Service, food, decor, presentation. For my appetizer I ordered the mt. Fuji app (sweet plantains, guac and steak) the steak was way overcooked. I'm use to my steaks being about medium. But the steak was like well well done. After, I ordered the del Ray sushi (shrimp tempura, king crab, plantains and guac) That was a Asian fusion style sushi. I give that 5 stars. It was very very good paired with the soy sauce and the sauces they give you with your sushi. Now Here Is Where My Biggest Problem Came In to Play, I Ordered Another Del Ray To Go And It Literally Took A Whole Hour!!! I Finished My Food Around 8:10 And Left At 9:14. That's Crazy. Smh. So my morning bus ocassional passes this place on my way to work. And given the location which is unassuming, unlikely and just downright uninviting......yet I am glad that I didn't let that chase me away given I have some familiarity with the neighborhood overall. So my rating is based on the food, drinks and out initial servers......because there are general service issues. My friends and I opted to sit outside even though it was a little chilly, because we wanted to be able to talk to each other given how loud it was inside on a Sunday evening and the cloud from the hookah.....don't get me wrong the DJ played good tunes but could've turned the music down a tad since the space isn't that big, but I can only imagine what the summer here looks like. Also you run the risk of slow service when you sit outside because they kinda forgot about you. But I'd like to make special mention to our servers Leslie and Toshi (the Chef's son) who still made our first time experience Amazing in spite of the small space and staffing issues. But there definitely should be some attention paid to the disconnect of server to patron ratio or hire more staff. Overall though this was a great local find that is a good 30 min walk from home......so I will get to get good steppage #FitbitLife and a chance to feed my sushi mojito obsession in. And the staff is pleasant overall and in combo to the weird yet tasty fusion of Japanese and Dominican flavors this place is Gold. The only thing I need is more non-pork based rolls, because the Dominican Japanese fusion is all so good to the palate.
