First off, the entire staff at this restaurant is actually Japanese. This makes a difference. It really does. I ordered the edamame, which arrived richly salted. I ordered Asahi Super Dry, and then discovered that Dassai 45 was available. This restaurant doesn't offer hot sake, but that's okay if they have a stock of Dassai. I ordered an assortment platter of sashimi, which consisted of maguro, yellowtail, and amberjack. Very fresh, with generous daikon and ginger. Then I ordered a plate of shrimp tempura, which a few pieces of green bean tempura. Well prepared. And of course, nothing compares to Japanese customer service. Very polite ladies at the front. We googled and yelped several sushi restaurants in Waikiki and I'm so glad we chose Sushi Matsuri. The nigiri was so good. Melt in your mouth good. We had the "Recommended four types assorted," which was tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and shrimp. They were all delicious! We also had the "5 pieces of salmon; fatty, torched, and regular" and it's so good we got another. Then my boyfriend couldn't stop, so he got the wagyu nigiri and snow crab nigiri. The snow crab was cold (on purpose) which he didn't like. I didn't love the wagyu because I'm not much of a beef person. He loved it. This place is a gem! We were created warmly immediately by the most genuinely kind service staff. Although the restaurant is small (which can be intimidating sometimes for me) we felt very comfortable. Stopped in on a Thursday night craving some sushi but then again when am I not. My friend and I decided to check this place out. The wait staff was very friendly and sat us right away. The menu is fairly small but everything was very fresh and done well. I had the dinner bowl which came on a bed of white rice. It was just enough food and everything tasted fresh. Presentation was good as well and my friend got the rainbow roll and spicy tuna roll and enjoyed them both! They were big rolls and filled him up. Stumbled across this place as I was craving sushi! (As per usual), and Stix Asia seemed pretty new (and I don't remember it being there the last time I was visiting!) we decided to go down the escalator to see what we could find and this was the place we went! Everything down there was pretty empty, and it seemed like everyone was looking for customers as the food traffic was pretty light at the time. We walked in and immediately got seated, and we ordered an assortment of nigiri and a couple rolls. And might I say, everything came out pretty quickly, and was SO fresh. OMG the sushi is so incredibly fresh. We were hesitant to try out the restaurant, given how empty it was, but I'm SOO glad we listened to the other yelp reviewers. My fiancé and I were the only 2 people at the restaurant and we basically got the freshest, butteriest cuts of Salmon and Otoro along with VIP service. As a lazy yelp reviewer and a sushi snob, I really don't write too many reviews unless I'm truly wowed, and I've gotta say Sushi Matsuri definitely WOW'd myself and my fiancé. So....I've come to Sushi Matsuri twice now in 5 days and I'm simply delighted by this very Japanese sushi restaurant located in the recently opened Stix Eatery. Hailing from the seaside city of Tokushima in southern Japan, Matsuri is focused on high quality nigiri, sashimi, limited maki, omakase set meals and a few other simple Japanese dishes done expertly. Chef Tetsu has worked day and night for the past three months with no day off to establish high standards and he delivers a product that truly rises above the fray. Expect to pay slightly higher than average prices for the meals but I hope you will agree with me that the quality is worth it. Chawanmushi is a favorite of mine and I'll order whenever I see it. Matsuri delivers a flawless version of this comforting savory egg custard, redolent with seafood and meats. Some say that Tamagoyaki is the test of a great sushi restaurant. At Matsuri, the tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet) comes to you warm with grated daikon. The dish is elegant and understated. My friends ordered the same (just different sets) and also got tempura, which I declined to taste but looked good. The miso soup (had 3 clams in it) was nothing special and lukewarm. My nigiri set was fresh but the quality of fish was just subpar except for my hamachi which was melt in your mouth! I don't normally care for eel but that nigiri was tasty, the eel sauce was not too sweet. Most of my nigiri were hard to eat because the rice fell apart as I picked up each piece. It was welcoming and we were thinking you can't go wrong with a sushi restaurant in Waikiki. Let's give them a try! Boy, we we sorely mistaken and regretted our decision. The entire staff looked friendly but the sushi was probably some of the worst we've had in a very long time. Their menu was fairly basic with lunch and dinner options. You are able to order off the dinner menu at lunch so we did just that. Both of us ordered #4 from the Dinner Set Menu. Aside from the 14 pieces of nigiri, you also get a bowl of miso soup. It was quite disappointing as the knife skills butchered the mediocre quality fish. The fish seemed like it was gassed with carbon monoxide and tasted like it. Went for a walk in Waikiki yesterday and decided to check out Stix Asia and decided to eat here. Stix Asia is a little hidden since it's in the basement of a Waikiki shopping plaza. Take the stairs or escalators down. Many different Japanese style restaurants. The staff were welcoming and nice. We had a backpack and the staff provided us with a basket to put our bag in so it didn't need to sit on the floor. The menu is straightforward and I was satisfied with our orders. Sorry forgot to take pictures of my food. I ordered #1 lunch set which was (if I remember correctly), 7 nigiri and 3 pieces of California roll with a miss soup ($24.95). My friend ordered the dragon roll set, $20.75 (all sets come with miso soup). Both were delicious. I had a piece of the dragon roll and the unagi was flavorful and had a smoky char to it. I didn't order a beer since I was on a walk and trying to be healthy, but the table across from us had beers and the beers looked perfectly chilled from the draft. Best of all, which we didn't know, you get a 10% Kamaaina discount if you let them know you are local and show ID. I recommend this place! read more

HANDS DOWN THE BEST SUSHI IN WAIKIKI. My sister and I tried Doraku, Kan Sushi, and a few other forgettable establishments because they were the most popular suggestions on TikTok and other social media. We were met with so much acrimonious disappointment at all of these places as they were derisively overpriced and tried way too hard to be elevated while losing the fundamentals. We ordered the 5 piece salmon nigiri combo and it was so affordable (~$15! Which was 2.5x less expensive compared to the aformentioned restaurant Doraku) The fish was so fresh and buttery soft. We only like salmon, so that's all we can attest to, but we will definitely be regulars here every time we visit Oahu. The waiter & waitress who took our orders today and yesterday were SO friendly and efficient with their service. You can tell they work really hard and don't expect a tip. Went to the Asia food court underground and decided to eat here. The place is decent sized not large or small. They serve mostly sushi with a few cooked items like tempura. We had the beef soup, shrimp tempura roll, tempura meal and sushi nigiri awa. The waitress asked if I wanted to switch the shrimp sushi with the sweet shrimp for $2 more which I did. They fried the head to eat also. The sushi was delicious and high quality. The tempura and beef stew were excellent. The tempura was fried perfectly. They also gave us the code to the restroom as we were customers. The restroom is shared with the other restaurants in the food court.
