Loved this place! Located inside at the bottom level of a small almost mall situation, this little gem is def worth checking out. I sat at the bar, and ordered a lunch sushi special. Delicious fresh nigiri especially the salmon and yellowtail was just melt in your mouth. The hostess/ server was welcoming and attentive, and the service was fantastic. The sushi chef was preparing different cuts of fish and when I inquired about the one he had been cutting, he asked me if I had ever had abalone and treated me to a single nigiri of the fresh abalone. "Hi! What time are y'all open till?" ..."Yes." "No...like, when do you close?" "We are open." ........ That's when I knew it would be a great restaurant. This was actually our second dinner, and boy, am I glad we went for it. We decided to sit at the sushi counter, so that our kiddo could have that experience. And yes, it was AWESOME. None of the wait staff or chefs that we spoke to spoke much English; only Japanese. But that made it fun! And it also told us that they cared more about the food than about anything else. They were kind, inviting, and helpful with our obnoxious stroller. We ordered chawnmushi, dashi tamago, and 3 nigiri sets. I hope I'm spelling everything right. The chawnmushi was the perfect consistency, and was suuuuper yummy and umami-y. (It's like an egg custard full of seafood and mushrooms, if you've never had it.) The dashi tamago was sweet, salty, fluffy, and perfectly moist. Yes, I said it. Moist. The layers were absolutely perfect, and if ordered on the side, it's warmed, while if part of a set, it's served cold, with rice and seaweed. The nigiri set was epic: the ikura and hamachi were stars of that show to me, but everything on it was absolutely delish. Everything was made with care and precision, and the staff was kind, helpful, and attentive. The only negative I could possibly list was that they didn't have uni, my favorite seafood. Perhaps they just didn't have any in; I'll ask again next time I go! 10/10 will return. read more

We ordered two lunch sets and the miso soup was only served after the meals arrived. And again, we had to ask. We were the only customers for the first 20 minutes so it wasn't busy. The rainbow roll was haphazardly constructed. The shrimp & ahi on the roll were not uniformly cut. The tempura bowl & the dragon roll both had the same sauce. Avoid at all costs. Honestly I thought I'd give this a try with my family since they had good rating and saw it was very lowkey. Not crowded. Now I know why. Sushi wasn't that fresh. Horrible service and on top of that in the end the server began asking for an increase in tip. WHAT!!!??? I've never ever had anyone demand for a higher tip . He's lucky I gave him something. They serve miso soup with clams which was so flavorful, it's now my favorite soup . Vegetable and shrimp tempura was the dish I ordered that day . Lightly flavored with tempura sauce . We were immediately drawn in by the modern Japanese decor and welcoming employees. My husband, toddler and I shared the "kids" meal, Dragon Eel Roll & Rainbow roll and edamame. Accompanied by some beer and shoshu! (which I haven't had since I went to Japan!) Everything tasted so so fresh! The melt in your mouth kind of sushi, omg, it was so good. What an awesome little spot! Outstanding food, competent and friendly staff, warm welcome, fast service. We came in at 6.30 with our toddler and they were super accommodating. We had miso soups, seaweed salad, baby had the omelette and the avocado roll and the omelette was so delicious - a sweet touch, perfectly formed; I had the salmon sashimi which was buttery soft, just delicious - we had the fish collar and my husband had a sushi platter and overall, probably one of the best meals we've had here in Hawaii (or for sushi in LA for that matter!). It reminded me of Japan with the quality of ingredients, attention to detail and careful service. Will be back and recommend! read more

We felt pressure to give more tip than we wanted because the server stands there while you fill out your credit card bill. I feel regret about how much I gave because I am an unhappy customer. I heard about the Stix Asia Food Hall and what a treasure of restaurants inside. My family tried Sushi Matsuri and ordered nigiri dinner sets, sashimi and sides for lunch. The fish was so fresh and expertly sliced. No fishy smell or fishy taste which shows fresh, high quality ingredients. Clean and fresh tasting. The sushi master knows his fish! This place is legit authentic with a great staff that hosted us and made us feel welcome. They all speak English and Japanese and prices are reasonable. My kids love it and we went back 3x during our one week visit. A definite favorite for us when we visit Waikiki. So glad we found it!! Note: the menu features traditional sushi like sashimi and nigiri and some side dishes like tempura, cold tofu, tamago. You won't find Americanized rolls with crazy names and mayo sauces.
