Hear me out, our favorite thing at Sushi Monster is the hot dog roll. Don't be scared, from my estimation the only reason for the name is it's size and shape. Was hungry and looking for a late lunch and found Sushi Monster in the area. Headed there and found it. Wasn't very busy when we arrived and thought maybe it was due to the time we arrived. Got seated quickly and we were brought some miso soup. The broth was clear and had a slight miso soup flavor. I'm used to actually seeing the miso cloud in my soup so I think they didn't mix it before scooping it. Ordered the chicken katsu and the Lovers Roll sushi. A salad was served with a ginger type dressing and it was okay. Lettuce was cold and crisp. Then the katsu and roll showed up. The katsu sauce was really good and the chicken was coated well. The mixed vegetables were pretty good too. The sushi roll was pretty tasty too. So the food was pretty good and the service was fine. People started to trickle in as we ate. Being prompt is a big plus for business, but the food was all over the place. Let me explain. The flavors were similar to each other as in all rolls taste alike and about 80% of their rolls have cream cheese (why?) . There was one thing I enjoyed, and that was the heart attach appetizer. My criticism on that and all crunchy rolls was the excess amount of panko crumbs topped on all rolls.A little goes a long way with toppings. We ordered 3 different rolls, and the filling to rice ratio was disappointing, and they all fell apart before getting to my mouth. That's a problem for sushi. We also ordered a chicken Katsu plate, and the crunch was spot on, but the chicken was too thin to enjoy the taste. I did like the ginger salad dressing on my salad as that was refreshing. The fried rice lacked flavor, and my veggies were a bit too salty but cooked right. Sadly, I don't think I will return here as nothing impressed me. My daughter and I went out here this evening for sushi. Place: A few people there, and it's okay. It was 9 pm. Multiple tables were open, and they sat us at the front. We looked over the long menu, and we asked for an appetizer #12 edamame beans twice. The order taker looked at us 2 x blankly stare. We were not sure if they would show up, but they did the first impression they were hot and fresh. We ordered rolls California roll, bad boy, lighting roll, They offered us free soup. Gross found a long strand of long black hair (yuck, we asked them to discard the soup) I was excited for the rolls to come out, but as soon as you grab it falls apart. Sad day On one of the rolls, some fish were very fishy and, unfortunately, got a small case of food poisoning. And won't be going back due to that and how we were treated, there was still over an hour left before they closed, and they forced us out by " saying, here's your check. We were not even done yet." I will say that it was rude how we were treated. They were upset bc I put in a complaint on how the roll was fishy, and I said I would pay the 16.95 for the 3 with a replacement roll. They did give us a California roll-in in place but overall was a bad experience due to all the above. I tried this a while back with a friend, and it was also bad. And figured to try it again, and It's our last. Officially, we are done. I am never going back here for all the above reasons. This is a cheap sushi joint for a reason... Their menu has sooooo many options for sushi rolls, it's hard to read through all the descriptions and pick because sooner or later, they all seem the same. But that's true, a lot of them have the same ingredients. I opted to get the daily special, which is where you get to choose three sushi rolls from a short list of options. Again, a lot of them seem really similar. I got the dancing eel, which was the roll I was most excited about (it let me down the hardest). I got another roll, can't remember the name, but it had some crisps on top, avocado, cucumber, imitation crab, and it was DRENCHED in eel sauce. I like eel sauce as much as the next person, but this was overkill. Lastly, I got the DC roll - cream cheese, avocado, and tempura shrimp, also drenched in eel sauce. The dancing eel is supposed to have cucumbers, cream cheese, grilled salmon skin, and eel inside, then topped off with fish roe. Wanna know why I was disappointed? Where was the eel??? I found a small piece in one of eight pieces in the roll! The grilled salmon skin was a no for me because it was so sharp, it was like trying to swallow bones that scratch your throat. Okay, so I tell the manager that there's no eel in my roll and she offers to have another roll made for me. Awesome. BUT. In addition, she told me that the roll would overflow if there's too much eel. There is NO eel! How about cut down on trying to be cheap and overly stuffing the roll with cucumber and cream cheese? I felt that the ingredients used were low quality. The tempura batter wasn't crispy, felt soft and not fresh. Too much cream cheese loaded in the rolls. Tried to skimp on meat by loading up on cucumbers in two of the rolls. Hiding the low quality ingredients and taste with eel sauce. Jeez! Honestly, the only redeeming factor here is how cheap the food is and their yum-yum sauce. The sauce is a sweet, creamy dip that is orange in color that you can dunk your sushi in to further hide the taste. read more

I have come here with my family many times over the years and it has always been a great experience. I like their Escolar hand rolls and my wife loves their eel rolls. Sushi monster surprised me more than I thought it would. I noticed the reviews on it weren't too high but I decided to give them a shot anyway. It's a nice little spot in the Valley Fair Mall area that I didn't know about. Almost every sushi restaurant I go to I order some variation of jalapeno bombs. Lucky enough for me, Sushi Monster had some for me to try. I will say that the flavor was okay, I've had better but it was not bad. I choked a little on the crunch on the jalapenos, there was quite a bit. I also like to order fried rice if it's available, it's preference but their rice wasn't something id get again. Rice was bland and wasn't much flavor to it, so you won't miss much there. On to the rolls, I ordered 3 and ate them all!! First was the elephant roll, this was definitely my favorite! The flavor was amazing and the recipe was on point for how well it all blended. Definitely try this one. Second was the crazy horse. I really like shrimp tempura so when I try new places I always grab a tempura roll. This did not disappoint. Pretty simple roll filled with fish and a sweet flavor to compliment. You'll love this one! Last I had the volcano, I decided is wanted a krab roll, unfortunately it looked better than it tasted. Not sure what about this roll didn't do it for me but it was my least favorite of the three I tried. Maybe it was the baked scallop or too much krab meat, but definetly try this too. This place was ultimately a disappointment. My dining companion and I wanted to try a different sushi place than our normal haunts and this one was close by. The menu itself was filled with 'krab salad' which when you are seeking out fresh fish is a little disturbing. We tried some of the specialty roll offerings (because we are American and fried is fun) as well as some of the nigiri choices to get a good feel of the ingredients at their base form. The yellowtail nigiri was perfection. Simple, clean tastes and the fish was obviously of a high quality. The spicy fish egg nigiri was not wrapped very tightly which made eating it a challenge, and a good portion of the eggs fell on the plate in the process which is not ideal. The specialty rolls we ordered suffered from, frankly; too many flavors. Sushi is meant to be clean, simple and harmonious, but I found myself editing the rolls to create a simpler, yet more complex flavor. Also, I was bothered by the fact that the 'Mexican roll' was plated with a plastic decoration that seemed like it was meant for a fish tank. Sushi is art and perfection.... if I can't eat it, then why is it on the plate? To cover your lazy construction with an eye catcher? Notably, my companion and I had also ordered a hot tea, and an appetizer that should be served hot; which we never received. There was no acknowledgement or apology. The items were not billed, however we were not given a chance to order more sushi, drinks, or even dessert regardless of the fact that they were empty as we dine early due to work schedules. We had wanted to order more of the yellowtail nigiri, but felt unwelcome after we were asked if we wanted the check with no attempts at upsale, even though we had kept a menu so we could order more later, as we had told our server. Please note, there were 3 servers to 3 tables, and we had ordered alcohol in the initial order which signifies we are there to relax and eat. We will not be returning. There was all kinds of food/sauce/stuff inside of my menu which is a real turn off. Note to restaurant managers: CLEAN the menus once a day! I ordered 2 rolls and 2 orders of nigiri. The bill was $30. The Volcano roll was a mix of Krab, scallops, and sauce over a Philly roll. I'm not usually a fan of cream cheese in rolls but this worked. By far the best roll I had today. It was a tad-bit pricey at $10.50 but tasty. The spider roll was rather unremarkable and didn't have a lot of flavor. It was heavily battered and not freshly fried. Chewy is not how I like my spiders. The yellowfin nigiri was good and the Unagi was okay with both pieces being end pieces and rather small. Over all the place was okay.
