Stopped by between lunch/dinner hours and the place was reasonably busy, not enough for me to not have a booth though which was nice. I decided to go with the classic California Rolls and ordered three. They all came out very fresh, the rice had a great texture and the avocado was perfectly green and soft, the smelt roe was fine on top. The crab meat was pretty delicious too. They didn't take too long to bring out my big order and their soda wasn't flat. The waitress was attentive, but quick to keep things moving. For starters, the sushi menu is one of the lengthier and more colorful ones I have ever encountered. With names such as the Brandon Roll, Lightning Roll, Crazy Mexican, Seminole, Gator and USF Rolls, Tempura Bagel, Volcano, and Screaming Orgasm the list is as interesting to read as it is to experience. From the simplicity of the Boston Roll (shrimp, cucumber, avocado) to the over-the-top Bloomingdale Roll (escolar, krab, cream cheese, tomato, asparagus, spicy mayo, yellow tail, eel on top, eel sauce, scallion, flying fish roe) there is something here to please everyone. My one grievance is that I simply do not understand the Floridian obsession with cream cheese as a sushi additive and that ingredient is pervasive throughout their offerings. Fortunately the chef's do not take offense at requests for individual modifications. If you are uncertain what to try, visit mid-week for the lunch specials as they provide a nice slice of their most popular offerings and the portions are quite nice. But Sushi is not all they offer at Sushi Ninja. The Tempura is fried to a nice golden color and the batter is light and flavorful. Their Teriyaki offerings (chicken, beef, salmon) use a home-made sauce recipe and the Katsu is just like momma used to make in the old country (provided your ancestry comes from the Pacific Rim). Together with a flavorful variety of noodle soups (Udon) served in meal sized portions, Sushi Ninja can be a worth a visit even if you are not a fan of sushi. The traditional Japanese beers, a small selection of wine and, of course, Sake are available to refresh your palette between bites. The restaurant itself is small and can feel a bit cramped when packed with diners. However, their location on a corner within the Bloomingdale Square strip mall allows for a good deal of light to enter the comfortable seating area. The décor is a bit over the top for the suburbs, but once you start dining you probably won't notice what is beyond your taste buds. The menu prices are pretty good, especially considering that Sushi is usually one of the more expensive dining experiences no matter where you go. So, the next time you have a yen for sushi but don't feel like traveling far, give this local Sushi Bar a try. read more

Are they new and working out the kinks or is it just mismanaged? We sat down at 7pm on a Tuesday night and it took 10 minutes for them to get our order even after asking the next tables server for help. We were told "our server is on her way". A few minutes later our server came by and when we said we'd like to order drinks and food then she had to run to get a pen. However she was stopped by another table to return a meal and she never came back. Another 10 minutes later we asked the server for the table next to us for help. She got our drinks and put in our food order and our original server never came back. As far as the food it was ok. Clear soup was cool, as in not hot. The chicken fried rice had a very strange flavor, like lighter fluid on the chicken maybe or something from the cooking process. We had high hopes for this place after seeing all the rave reviews. We are sushi fanatics and have tried most sushi places in Brandon/Riverview. If you're coming here for strictly sushi, it's decent. Pricey, and not the best in town at all but decent. We ordered crab ragoon and gyoza. Both were not homemade and pre frozen we could tell. Wouldn't recommend. The entrees is where it was a complete failure. I read similar reviews unfortunately after we paid $85 for our meal tonight. I ordered steak teriyaki which according to the menu was a stir fry. Instead it came out on a skillet and the steak was sliced in thick strips on top of mushy vegetables with a thick sauce. They brought out a side bowl of plain stale rice. I asked the waitress if they had any of the hibachi yum yum sauce and she brought me a cup of something tasted like mayo and sugar. My husband ordered the noodle dish per the waitress' recommendation and the noodles were SO overdone that they tasted so gooey. We both ordered ginger salads and for $2.50 I wasn't expecting anything elaborate but the dressing was god-awful and looked bright orange like they just blended carrots in the dressing. Not the type of ginger salad I'm used to. Like I said, sushi was decent nothing special but the service was horrible and our entrees tasted like a frozen Costco meal. Sushi Ninja is literally the worst sushi place I have ever been. Dirty seat, dirty dishes, bad service, bad and/or extremely bland food. It was sadly a 100% miss and I'd like to save others the disappointment if possible. When we first walked in, it was unappealing to see half the tables in the restaurant empty but still sitting covered in dirty dishes and napkins. I didn't think too much of it at first because I thought they must be busy with a big rush of people, but as I sat through dinner I realized that they were not busy at ALL... they just weren't bussing the tables. Then we get to our booth and the seats were dirty... so I used my napkin to clean it, and asked the server for another napkin... No biggie... except that I ended up having to ask her literally 3 times for the napkin. She kept coming back to the table without it, even after she brought drinks, and even after she brought food/appetizer. Even worse than a dirty seat is dirty dishes... When our server brought the appetizer, she brought two appetizer plates, BOTH of which were dirty. I took pictures. One literally had a fingerprint smudge underneath a black spot. The other had two crumbs or food tidbits of some kind. We did not use them, or ask for new plates because I was already frustrated at asking for a napkin 3 times, and I knew by the time we would get new plates we'd probably be done with the appetizer. So then the sushi comes. Where do I start?? The server forgot to bring the ginger salad my husband had ordered. The server also forgot to bring the side of spicy mayo I had asked for (and forgot it yet again when she came back to bring my husband's forgotten ginger salad so I had to ask for that another time or two.) My sushi plate literally had no wasabi and no ginger on it... who in the world serves sushi and forgets to put the wasabi and ginger on the plate, the one thing that's on literally every sushi plate ever??? So aside from that, I was confused just looking at my sushi because the description was that it was topped with yellowtail. However, only 3 of the 7 pieces were topped with yellowtail, whereas the other 4 pieces were topped with what looked like a big black nasty chunk of fish skin. I asked the server what that was, and she informed me it was eel. I was mistaken that the roll I ordered had eel on it (I had thought it said eel sauce when I looked at it.) however, it was not just a situation where I could "peel the eel" off and eat the roll I was looking for, because that was literally the only topping on more than half of the pieces. I understand the eel part was something I overlooked, but why was it that a main ingredient that the roll says it has, is missing from half the pieces?? If a sushi roll you order says it has tuna, cucumber and cream cheese, but you receive a roll that had some pieces with just tuna, some pieces with just cucumber, and some pieces with just cream cheese, would you feel like you got what you ordered?? Of course not. Any sushi roll I have ever eaten prior to this has consistency and the ingredients ordered in every single "slice" of the roll. I briefly pointed out the issue of the roll having only yellowtail on a few of them, and only eel/(snakeskin) on the others, and another server or employee walked by and said "oh it's ombré". (..,Ha... ha.... ) Meanwhile the server just basically stood there like I was an idiot and then I eventually just said never mind because I was SO OVER this entire experience!!!!! She definitely did not care about any of this, and of course did not at any point come back to ask how any of it was, (to myself or my husband, etc.) even the pieces that had no eel, that I ate, were just so... below mediocre tasting. Bland. Not to mention the entire roll fell apart every time I picked up a piece- it was basically like a huge joke at this point. Let me also mention how gross their ginger salad was. How do you mess that up, right? It's just ginger dressing and iceberg lettuce basically. I noticed my husband pushed it to the side pretty quickly, but with all the other stuff I didn't ask him about it until the end. I asked how it was and he said it was weird and doesn't think it was actually a ginger salad. I looked at it and thought WTF? #1 the dressing was nothing like any other ginger dressing I've ever had. It was bright orange, like a starburst candy or orange jelly. And it basically tasted like orange jelly/marmalade or something.... it was awful. Tasted nothing like ginger, or any ginger dressing I've ever had at any sushi or hibachi restaurant, ever. If I had been given another napkin I would have spit it out. Don't waste your money, please. Go to Yoko's in South Tampa. Go to Soho Sushi on Kennedy. Go anywhere else. I would not go back to Sushi Ninja again even if it was free. read more

Found this gem of a restaurant! We decided to try Sushi Ninja for lunch today. My husband ordered a Poke Bowl with all hot ingredients. He was not disappointed. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura and was pleasantly surprised on the quantity of shrimp and the tastiness of the sauce. We had a California Roll and Mexican Roll. The shrimp on the Mexican Roll was warm and tasty. Next time we're in the area we definitely will be stopping at Sushi Ninja for another great meal. read more

Sadly I can only review the sprite and the service of said sprite since we sat for 15 minutes without getting further service. The server greeted us nearly immediately, took our drink order and gave us menus. We took about 5 minutes to read all the special sushi rolls (which looked awesome) and decide which 4 we wanted. We also decided our apps and alcoholic drinks (which also looked awesome). We then watched the 2 servers continue to serve the tables around us (maybe 8 tables in the entire place, including us). The server who brought us our sprite came close to our table at least 8 different times but never actually came back to our table to take our order (we were up by the door so it wasn't like we could just grab her walking by). I watched her serve a new table their drinks, take their order (they arrived after us and were a larger party) then go to the table right behind us and give them their check. She then came back, got their check and cashed them out. Ok, I understand being busy so maybe now that she cleared out that table she would serve us so we waited. YES, she was finally headed back our way and we were going to get to order....then she stops at the now empty table to bus and clean it. REALLY?!? I waited for her to clean it then was going to say something but as soon as she finished, she bolted back into the back. At this point we had waited in excess of 15 minutes after getting our sprite with little more service so I left some cash for the soda and went to Burger Monger. I am very disappointed, I was craving sushi and this place had always had fantastic food but unfortunately that does you no good if you can't get the food from the kitchen to the table.
