I've eaten at this place on several occasions and was just more progressively disappointed with each visit. However, it does provide the option to get the mostest for the leastest, and in true American fashion, I have to do that on occasion. The sushi is hit or miss - some days the rice will be undercooked and others, overcooked. The noodle station isn't bad - the udon broth is a good way to wash things down if you get tired of tap water. The crabs, lobster tails, and other goodies that periodically come out are usually swarmed by the bastards attempting to eat everything - you can pick them out when they stand around the station at about 3 minutes before its supposed to come out and then try to take six of the item over the protest of the attendant. All you can eat sushi with some Korean dishes. Pricy for dinner so I'd go for the lunch time slot. I had their cheese lobster and crab during their dinner hours and it tasted awfull. The desserts were the best out of the place. I liked the green tea ice cream. If you have ever eaten at a korean BBQ then the beef tasted just like that. The highlight when they have lobsters, crabs and osyters in the buffet. There's alot of hungry people grabbing all the good stuff. Todai is usually my default location for when I'm eating with a group of people who can't decide what they want and we've exhausted all of our go-to options. The sushi isn't the highest quality, but people don't come here because the sushi is awesome. They come here because it's a buffet and there's a lot of it. I like the other dishes that they serve here especially the salads which all have sriracha somehow incorporated. Believe it or not, I carried a bottle of sriracha with me when living in England. That's how much I love the stuff. The dessert bar is pretty good as well. The desserts are snack sized so that you don't feel so guilty about downing 30-40 pieces. Granted, I have no shame and feel no guilt. The place can be a little pricey but it's a decent option if you live close. The Todai in NY was better. This is one of the few times that you'll hear me say anything in NY is better. read more

I'm pretty much going to echo the opinions of other 2-star reviews. The quality is sub-par and those who truly know sushi will not appreciate this place's sushi. I have been here a few times over several years, and it saddens me that they use imitation crab meat so much. It's just disgusting, disappointing, and insulting to customers (who appreciate real sushi!). I always avoid it because it's fake. Why eat fake fish when you can eat the real kind? Also, none of the spicy rolls are spicy. They are so unbelievably bland. It's very false labeling. It makes me mad! The same is true for the "spicy" sauces. Anyway, the hot plates section isn't terrible, but it just reminds me of food made on a cruise ship or something. Actually, the entire place is like a cruise ship buffet - it's a large bustling room with several waiters running around picking up somewhat-empty plates and diners stuffing food down their mouths like this is the best food ever and they haven't eaten for days. Trust me, the food is not that good, but people eat like they're on a cruise and have no where else to go because they're stranded there. Having said that, I enjoyed the vegetarian glass noodles entree. Some desserts, like the cakes, are super dry. The crepes are not good at all either. Others, like the cheesecake or flan, have better texture and are a good ending to a meal. However, the star is the ice cream. I really enjoy getting the espresso and pouring it over the ice cream to make a personal affogato. I don't think it's possible to eat your worth for $30 at dinner time. I only know of about three things I genuinely enjoyed there, and I KNOW I can't eat $30 worth of those things. I'd much rather go to a real sushi place, spend less than $30, and get the sushi I want. Also, I got green tea, and our waitress didn't refill the hot water. I noticed that after we paid, every other patron who ordered green tea got free refills. I was annoyed. Bottom line: the more I think about this place, the more I get fed up with it. I've decreased it from 2 stars to 1 from start to end of writing. Sorry. I used to love todai when it first opened. We'd find any excuse to trek down to fair oaks and munch on all you can eat sushi and tiny cakes. Over the years the quality went down and we stopped going. Today my mom dictated we go here again to recreate the nice memories we had and it's her bday so we aren't able to say no or redirect her to somewhere more delicious :( I have to give credit where credit is due. Todai stepped up their game with higher quality choices and really nice waitstaff. We had kids in tow and they were super helpful with them, not a single eye roll when the kids threw food on the floor (I left a big tip). I liked all the foods I ate, even the ramen noodles were yummy! Much better than speciality ramen places in the area *cough* *cough* temari *cough* So why the low marks? One star off for being super stingy with the good rolls like unagi. They came out with 6 pieces at a time (maybe every 10 minutes) and the lady in front of me took 4 (I had to nudge in for 2 otherwise I'm sure she would have taken all 6). 2 stars off because something we ate made my mom and I sick. We immediately had to station in the restroom :( :( :( which is not an ideal bday meal. I'm super ocd about washing my hands ever since I got preggers, and I didn't even make it to dessert so I can rule those 2 things out. Bottom line - It's just not worth it to eat here. read more

Because this Todai is a million miles from my house, I just don't come here. Last time, it was over 10 years ago. Back then, it was ok. Having been is many sushi buffet, I didn't think it was worth the time to drive over here to fight for limited nigiri sushi. Recently, because I happened to be in the area, I came back. It has changed for the better. It was always a nice large clean restaurant with many stations, but this time, I noticed that the selection of hot foods and nigiri sushi improved dramatically. They even had raw oysters! If I'm in the area, I will come back. I guess since I've been to so many sushi buffets, I been to much better, so I can't give them a higher rating. read more

I am a lover of all buffets. I'd consider Todai to be among the kings of buffets. Don't settle for a smaller sushi buffet such as Arigato in Fair Lakes when you can have the king. Todai is a massive sushi buffet in the Fair Oaks Mall, but it's also a chain with locations across the Asian and American world. I first sampled Todai at their San Diego location and was blown away by the quality and sheer massiveness of the selection. There are at any one time 15-25 choices of nigiri, as well as a smorgasborg of rolls to choose from. Most sushi buffets will give the standards, tuna, salmon, mackerel, maybe eel for nigiri and some middling tuna and California rolls. Not here, that's for sure. The hot food is above average. Certainly not great, but it tastes good and its plentiful. For dinners, they feature some stuffed lobster tail and ample selections of crab. I think it's appropriate to separate out Todai from your average, middling buffet. Due to it's size and popularity, turnover of food/sushi on the buffet is high, ensuring you are getting fresh food. If it's not crowded, I can never recommend a sushi buffet. Unfortunately, with the size, comes the crowds. It is very often full. Also unfortunately, not surprisingly given its mall location, it is filled with loud kids that don't appreciate the food they are eating in the first place. I assume they are there for the ample dessert and frozen yogurt bar. Todai certainly specializes in Japanese food, but they do have several Korean and Chinese items as well on the hot food station. I really enjoy the feeling of stretching out my sweatpants when I go there (tip: wear sweatpants, buttons are for rubes when it comes to buffets). I also like to play a game where I try to double or triple the cost of the buffet in food stuffed into my mouth. It's fun for all, and really promotes good health. read more

I went to Todai to get my usual mediocre sushi fix. Everything went as planned, ate my fill when I decided to get some green tea ice cream. After two spoons, I look down and find a nice surprise. It was a fly swimming in my ice cream bowl. I showed it to the waiter and he said he will show the manager. 5 minutes later, he comes back and says they are sorry. That's it. You know I am not looking for a free meal but the manager himself could come by to make sure everything was ok. Bad management. They have lost me as a diner for life. read more

***HOSTESSES*** Arrived at noon on a Saturday and had a 40 min wait, which is somewhat expected here, but the two hostesses were extremely rude and dismissive. Heewon in particular stared me and my significant other down while we waited, while letting other newcomers cut in line and enter the restaurant while we waited. The second hostess wasn't much better as we observed she and Heewon look away from people approaching the desk and talking down to an older group of customers. Note to the owner!!: It is quite obvious you haven't trained the hosts or don't care that they talk smack to your paying customers. Either get them to be polite and helpful or fire them. Come on, this isn't acceptable. ***WAITSTAFF** Waitstaff here has always been very nice and helpful. Alex was awesome and the rest of the waiters and waitresses are great. They are the best part of the service at Todai aka Sushi On. ***FOOD*** Food is the #1 reason we come here and it was fantastic as always. If you like buffets, you will probably like Todai. I have been several times over the past few years and I have found it to be a nice little buffet. The first time I tried Todai, was for lunch after a morning of shopping. It was bright and cheery...very inviting. The staff was extremely pleasant, and very helpful with information when we explained it was our first time. The selection of sushi was pretty decent. The salads were lovely. The soups and entrees were decent. It wasn't gourmet by any measure. It was what I expected from a buffet, perhaps a tad better than I thought it might be. I found it to be reasonably priced for lunch, so I planned on returning with my family for a dinner. Dinner was a little different. First off, I noticed the big jump in price. With only small additions for dinner, it didn't seem quite worth it. The price might have put me off a bit, but the family seemed to enjoy the selection. The kids (4) loved it! They piled their plates with a nice variety of food. I was pleased to note that everyone found something to enjoy. They "flipped" over the little desserts! Everything except the crepes were bite-size. It was a perfect way to end a family meal. A few things have bugged me over the years, 1) They not only stop seating well before their stated closing, they actually close up and practically kick you out...not the typical restaurant experience. 2) Dinner is really pricey...especially if you have tall kids.(They price by height) 3)The mad dash for the special...sometimes a bit of lobster...served for a few minutes every hour...weird. THE GOOD: sooooo... when i found out they have a todai in fairfax, i will never again go back to paying for overpriced sushi anywhere in the DC vicinity... (sounds like the sprint commercials about the drop calls) todai is a sushi buffet chain and it serves asian fusion food along with lots and lots of sushi.. as a true sushi lover the fact that they have 1) sashimi, uni (every once in a while i think) , ikura, white tuna, spicy scallops and squid, which are normally not for buffet standards, with a variety of rolls including a dynamite roll that's perfection... 2) along with a variety of salads like tuna sesame salads and spicy white tuna salads, 3) a cold seafood bar like shrimp cocktail, snow crab legs, and raw oysters and mussels, 4) with an awesome cooked food section with stuffed lobster and dumplings and harumakis, 5) and to top it off a great dessert bar... you can have your own crepes made and a variety of bite size cheesecakes to go with the green tea icecream or mango sorbet.... just makes this place FABULOUS... weekend prices are around 30-35 with tip depending if you wanted a drink or not, but if you've eaten sushi in DC like at dragonfly or thai chef, you realize that your walking out only 66% full, and still forkin out at least 30+ bucks.. so just in the fact that you can have such a variety of things to chose from to eat, and be able to walk out wobbling.. ( which believe me.. you will notice as you walk in.. that all people.: fat, skinny, short, tall, stumpy legged, long legged, all wobble out..) that alone should at least guarantee one drive down to fairfax, VA... THE BAD: granted i'm all for the good deals, but if you're on a blind or first date, this isn't the place to take the new GF too.. it's a buffet... and if you're looking for awesome table service where they pull out your chair and open up your napkin, it'snot gonna happen here.. also, the crying babies and whining kids aren't going to set the mood either.. there are no candles on the tables, and you serve yourself.. so just keep that in mind.. THE UGLY: there isn't really an ugly here.. i must admit.. i didn't find the ugly bathroom syndrome that some restaurants have, or the "omigod.. that sushi chef just picked his nose" so i think you can rest assured that this buffet is CLEAN! read more

Northern Virginia is severely lacking in Asian buffet options. This Japanese buffet is one of the only options within 15 miles. We had a hankering for just that though so we have it a try. Last things first, it's $30 per person. Yup. That means it's over $70 for two people to go for dinner. They didn't charge for baby, but I don't know what the age cut off is for free kids. I can't say that it was worth it. I certainly got a lot of food. But I definitely didn't get a lot of good food. The sushi rolls were small and many of the most popular tend to get picked off very quickly. I didn't see any Unagi the entire time I was there. This was true of many other stations too. The Tempura was good but as soon as they bring out a new tray, a couple of people dig through and pull out all the shrimp leaving only vegetables. The "Chinese food" portion was probably the biggest let down. There were very few options and what was there seemed phones in. The Fried Rice was plaid and bland. The Teriyaki Chicken wasn't at all tasty. The dessert items were nice. The Flan was my stand out favorite, but the strawberry shortcake was also delicious. Service on buffets is generally not a huge concern, but our waiter was no where to be found. We ended up walking to the front assuming we had to pay there because he never came back after bringing our drinks. I will probably trek out to Bailey's Crossroads the next time I want a good buffet option rather than try Todai again. read more

WOW is the only word that describes the variety of beautiful Asian food that is offered here. My husband & I were looking for a quality late lunch while Christmas shopping at Fair Oaks Mall when we stumbled upon Todai. Todai was a GREAT find & we were about to be gastronomically pleased!!! Todai offers over 20+ different kinds of sushi & sashimi, as well as many wonderful fresh salads!! (for buffet sushi & sashimi it was very delicious!!) They also serve a large variety of hot entrees, Teriyaki & Korean bbq, udon & ramen, dumplings & other appetizers. Note to self: when starting at the hot entree side of the buffet take small portions so to leave room to taste almost everything that Todai has to offer!! If you can...leave room for dessert!! There are about 10 different bite size 'little cakes & tarts' to choose from, as well as made-to-order crepes, cheese cakes, ice creams, lattes & espresso. I've read a series of complaints about this buffet not being authentic in its dishes i.e. the sushi, udon, etc. As that may pertain to the case here, overall as a buffet that caters to a variety of people with different tolerances, this buffet is really good. There is a huge variety of asian food, seafood to meat, desserts, salads, and obviously more. Although particular dishes are definitely quite better than others, once again, overall, the food is pretty dang good. I'm not a fan of the pricing per person for this buffet, but I think it isn't that bad if you go on occasion or want to take some guests out to try the buffet. There are so many entree dishes, soups, salads, sushi, etc that you can choose from and for the most part, they're all really good! I like how the desserts are cut into small squares and portions that way you can try a little bit of each and get more of whatever you like if you're still up for it. Cons: -Pricing -Some desserts are not up to par (not as good as you're expecting it to be) -This buffet likes to use their special mayo in I feel like a lot of their dishes (sushi, mussels) so if you get sick easily don't eat too much of those particular foods. I absolutely love this place. My first tip... Don't be a moron, go to the lunch buffet. Always lunch. Half the price for virtually the same thing. I make road trips to this place. Theres nothing like Todai anywhere near where I'm from. The sushi buffets around here are laughable in comparison. The first time I went to Todai my friend George described it in a short succinct sentence. A massive buffet. Being in a mall, the place is popular so the food is generally kept fresh. The variety is pretty decent. Their 'sushi' section is the most popular, though it's something I can hardly call sushi. It's just a ball of rice with a thin slice of fish thrown on it. But it won't make you sick and it fills you up. The desert selection is pretty good with made-to-order crepe and ice cream. $19 (including tax) for a weekend lunch. There is a decent selection of food at this buffet (large selection of sushi; crawfish; cold appetizers; soup; hot entrees; desserts and such). Not worth it! Buffets are always a toss-up for me. This one is huge, which is incredibly daunting for someone like me but if you're like the rest of the clientele, you should have no problem clearing plates. But you have to put aside your pickiness about sushi quality, swallow your pride, and get in the trough line. It's cheap, bottomless, and filling. Sometimes, so filling that you feel like youre not getting your money's worth when you can only put away 2 plates of maki rolls. Stay away from the hot side, its mostly meh with a side of blah. The food was good, especially for a buffet. It is a little pricey, but just come prepared to overindulge and gain 15 lbs! My son enjoys the selection and I am pleased there is korean food. Fit the bill for my daughter's request of a sushi buffet. I was glad there were quite a few other options, for a buffet the food is good.

We've been coming here since the new owners took over. At first, I thought it was really great. The food was excellent and it was one of the better Korean-run sushi-buffet's in the Fairfax area. Over time, however, things seem to have gone downhill. First, the quality of food has seemingly declined over time. The hot bar food sits out and ends up getting cold, especially the teppanyaki area with chicken, beef, and shrimp. We've come several times and been very disappointed with the snow crab legs being either overly salted, or just plain rotten (e.g., the animal died a while before it got cooked). It's also important to note that the buffet always serves the same items. It would be nice if they introduced some variety once in a while, especially at their price point, which has also increased as quality decreased. In short, my wife and I think they got complacent and comfortable so they're no longer "trying" which sucks. We used to like this place a lot, and it's still an "ok" buffet, but NOT for the $40 per person they're charging. If they lowered their price to $25 or so, then I'd probably give it 3.5 stars. read more

Um did i die and go to food heaven. This is hands down the BEST buffet place I've ever been to in the DMV area. I'm telling you I was literally cheesing everytime I took a bite because the food was so good! I was so happy like a little fat boy haha. I enjoyed the service and the wonderful food. tThe sushi was not like other buffets with okay quality these were amazing. The creme brûlée i had like 8 of them! I would definitely come here again! 20 bucks for lunch is pretty pricey even if it's on the weekend. And to rise to the level of 4 or 5 stars on Yelp, you'd have to be pretty exceptional. Unfortunately, Todai does not meet those expectations for me. That's not to say it's not pretty solid for an Asian buffet. They have a good amount of variety. I think of the main categories as: sushi, soup, noodle station, traditional, and desserts. Sushi: If you don't spend at least half your meal gorging on the sushi then you can be spending your money more wisely. The most popular one is definitely the eel. This one is almost always on empty. So see if you can get a seat next to the sushi section and keep an eye out because it goes quick. Soup: They might switch these up but last time I went there was: miso, crab, and something else. The crab (not a lot of actual crab meat) was my go to and a good option between heaping platefuls of more solid foods. Noodle station: You an pick your ingredients ranging from napa cabbage to shrimp, a noodle (udon or ramen), and then a broth. Give it to the guy behind the counter and he'll have it ready for you in 2 minutes. Also good value if you get momentarily sick of fish and rice. Traditional: This is the section towards the back with the classic Chinese buffet dishes - your fried rice, lo meins, glazed meats. Definitely not a good value but sometimes I can't resist. Desserts: Very solid options. They have little cakes, fondue, made to order crepes, soft serve ice cream, and even a newly purchased cappuccino machine. I don't know... I used to love this place. The first few times I came here, I ate so much you could have rolled me out of the mall and straight down Rt. 50. But it had been almost 2 years since I had been here and I decided to join my friend and his wife and child (who celebrated her first birthday yesterday) for lunch. The food at the hot food bar was just so-so hot and the sushi just all tended to taste the same after awhile. Dessert was good, although one of my crowns came off near the end of the meal so after that I kinda lost my appetite (fortunately I saved it!) In summation, I think many of the other reviewers got it right- this place has gone downhill a bit. Perhaps that's the way with many of these places- you get the initial rush and excitement of all the selections and variety but when you actually sit down to eat it, you find that the quality is mediocre. read more

Todai would net a higher rating if it wasn't so gosh darn expensive even for lunch. The lunch buffet set me back $20 including tip, and I was tipping light because my water was refilled once and it's a buffet. It's mostly employed by Koreans and so you get the Korean Asian buffet experience: it's cleaner than most Asian buffets, seafood is the focus rather than Americanized Chinese staples, and there are lots of gimmicks like the mini cakes and the green tea soft serve. The selection is ridiculous but there's no depth in the food. The pork belly was too thick and lacking in all the goodness that makes up pork belly, and the galbi was just kinda there. Not very good. The supposed crab cakes had a very generic seafoody but not very crabby flavor overwhelmed by the potato chip 'cracker' used as a base. The seafood. This is what reviewers are interested in. To Todai's defense, the fish to rice ratio in terms of its nigiri sushi is not that bad, although the pieces are small and they are replenished less than quickly. The salmon was fine across the board, but the tuna was kinda dry and could have been fresher. The sashimi mix that is coated with enough sesame oil to hide any flavor of fish were just scraps left over from the roll making process and they were pretty atrocious. There were definitely pieces of fish that weren't off, but just... they were old and mushy. Mushy izumi dai (tilapia) is gross. If the buffet was, say, $14 ($16 with tip), I'd be a lot more willing to try Todai again and up the rating. The dessert tray is a standout. The green tea soft serve actually tasted like vanilla ice cream with a good dose of matcha, and the little mini tiramisu cakes were good as well. I've been to dinner a long time ago, and other than a slight improvement in fish selection (escolar, etc.), sort of the same meh for even more $$$. read more

The quality of food really went downhill. I went there ab a month ago for an office dinner on a week day and the crab legs were extra extra salty. I wasnt able to eat it and I think they did that on purpose so customers wont be able to eat them since the cost of king crab leg is highest. It is not worth going for dinner time. They set a timers for lobster tails. Technically, the most you could get it 2 lobster tails for your entire meal. The lobster tails are extremely small, almost like eating a jumbo shrimp. NOT WORTH IT. The dessert it def one of my favorite part of the whole meal. I like the small bite size cakes and hot crepes. * You can do take out, but its a set sushi box. The sushi box will give you directions on what to put in the sushi box. It will have a certain selection of 8 or 9 sushi pieces, 2 salads, and 2 desserts. for less than $7.00 dollars. read more

This has been my least favorite restaurant. From when it was Todai, I had hopes that it would be better since there seemed to be some changes... I was wrong. The sushi was below average. The ramen was sub-par. The "hot" food was mediocre at best. I did not expect much for the service, knowing that's it's an all you can eat. I was extremely unimpressed yet again. read more

Yeah!!! I love this place. All you can eat sushi and other Asian goodies for one price. Go for lunch, its cheaper then dinner. Be careful though cause those carbs can add up. Just make sure you run 5-10 miles afterwards to burn it off: ) Todai is a great deal. For all you hard core sushi fans, you might not think highly of a sushi buffet but for those who don't want to spend an arm and leg on raw, uncooked fish than Todai is awsome and for all you who do not like sushi than there is plenty of other cooked food there for ya. You can get steamed shrimp, a variety of noodle dishes, seafood, and some fun and colorful desserts. Must try the mango sorbet. Delish!!! They have some tasty soups also like miso, and Udon. Make sure you go there with an empty stomach because you will need room. Just don't starve yourself because your stomach will shrink and you might make it through one plate. read more
