It's a sushi buffet, so you are never going to get the best sushi ever. However, the fish is fresh and there is a good selection. The prices are higher at night, but there is a larger variety of cooked seafood dishes, like stuffed lobster. The place is crowded and noisy, with lots of families with young children, so I don't think this is the place for a romantic first date. But if you are HUNGRY and want sushi, this is the place. read more

Just got to the review but we actually came here on my birthday in February. In case you are unaware if you come on your birthday they will give you a free certificate to return for a free dinner or lunch depending on when you came. There is such a variety of food and everything tasted good. The first time I came I only had chicken, fish and meat. Not one vegetable was eaten. The second time I came I tried everything. I had so may oysters, crabs and shrimp not to mention like once an hour you can get half a stuffed lobster. The lobster isnt the best (I am from New England) but its decent. I love this place. I originally went to the Honolulu location and it was the first time I had ever made myself sick by eating too much. It was like (Wo)man vs. sushi buffet up in that place. And it was totally worth it. I remember looking at their map of locations on the wall because I knew that I would be back in the continental U.S. soon and wanted to find out how soon I could do that again. It took a while to find it but I happily stumbled upon it in the Fair Oaks Mall and I was thrilled to see it. It was packed when we walked in and nearing the end of the lunch hour but we were able to stuff ourselves properly. This time, however, I was able to avoid laying on the floor with an overstuffed induced stomachache. I am often ashamed to admit that I like to attend the occasional buffet (What?!? I know what you're thinking...4 STARS! Get out. Yes, I am giving good ole Todai's the quad treatment. Ask me why? Because of the abundance of seafood! It's pretty darn good. In fact, it's "wear a comfortable top and loose pants" kind of good. It's "holy cow, I think I broke a rib, I ate so much" good. The minute I get seated, I head straight for the oysters. I grab an entire plateful of oysters and tons of lemons. Place that down. Then grab another plate full of sushi, ginger, and kimchee (tricky, but works). Set that down. Head directly for the soup counter and get whatever spicy concoction they're offering. Last by no means least, I grab a plate full of crab legs and a pint of butter. Now, I'm ready to grub. There's no talking, no conversational piece about the food, it's all business. Crab legs cracked and dunked into butter, sushi stuffed in mouth, oysters downed, soup guzzled. Ah, just the beginning. I wait. I breathe in a deep long yoga breath and I walk myself over to the dessert island. I take a fruit tart and a pumpkin pie. Don't worry the slices are tiny, perfect mouth-size bites, wouldn't want the extra calories. Never mind the 10 pounds of food I just consumed. My stomach hurts, I groan. I feel a nap coming. For this restaurant, I wish there was such a thing as 10 stars. I love this place! Although I come here for the sushi and sashimi, I stay for the rest which includes the following: miso soup, a variety of salads, teriyaki type chicken, salmon, and other seafood dishes. In the evenings, they offer lobster and king crab legs. Now back to the sushi, the salmon and tuna are usually my favorites; however, I love their Philadelphia roll. Now onto dessert, they offer a plethora of choices. Let 'em eat cake (since they're so small!) The cake sizes are about the size of a petit four. In addition, they offer small cups of mango, green tea, and red bean sherberts. In addition, they offer small sized custard pies and cheesecakes. I love the sizes since it allows one to try a variety without waste or feeling too full. On the weekends, there is someone there to make crepes. Onto the service - Although it's a buffet restaurant, the servers could not be more friendly. They fill up the beverage and take away the plates without needing to be asked. So I gave it a shot. I got at my table, ordered my little drink and f*ckin' dug in. I am not a big sushi person or crab legs. My wife dragged me out to the Todai buffet on a Monday night, and let me say that the word "disappointing" would be an understatement. All of the hot foods on the buffet looked like they had been sitting there since the dinosaur age. The lobster is only served once every hour and disappears in minutes. Not to mention the lobster tail is only 1/2 of a lobster tail and it is covered in a disgusting white sauce. To say the sushi was ok would be giving this place a lot of credit. When paying $30 per person, I would have rather went to a nice sushi restaurant and had sushi which was 100x better and paid less than $30. They have a huge variety of sushi on the buffet, but buyer beware, because much of their sushi is made with cheap ingredients like imitation crab meat. Each sushi dish has a descriptive sign detailing the ingredients and unless you read the sign you will not have a clue what is in the sushi rolls. In addition, all of the tableware (forks, spoons, knives) seem to have a dull looking film on them and did not look clean. It was as if they just sent them through some hot water without any soap. That was really disgusting to me. My wife and I left this place very disappointed. Many of the Yelpers' negative reviews of the Todai restaurant were dead on. Believe in Yelp!!! I come here way too much. Salmon Sashimi is superb, but beware the quick hands. Lobster specials are more like large shrimps. I think people eat them only because they hear the word lobster but taste is meh... the cheese overpowers the taste of the seafood. Oysters are handed out by the 3. Ok, but some could be fresher and better cleaned. Some of the rolls have a lot of rice in them. Specialty rolls are good, some of them have too much mayo, but overall very good. Best of all, the crab legs are typically fresh and they replenish them fast enough so that something fresh is available to eat. Sometimes on slow nights all there is left to eat are the small legs. I wish they had some chinese vinegar for the legs. I'd be able to whip up some kind of nice sauce. They just have a lot of butter. Korean food is alright. Best is this soup thing. I don't know what its called but it has pork, cabbage, onions, and has great taste. And as a non dessert person, I always eat more desert than I need. Dang. I have to say the value here is great. I love their desserts. Before tony left I was willing to drive 45-1hr for some todai. After tony left, the dessert menu sucks. They dont give you much sushi anymore. Mostly rolls. One of my favorite places to take the family. We go almost once a month for different occasions. Love the sashimi which is only avail for dinner and on weekends. Asian staff is courteous and service is always good. Best sushi buffet option around. Would have given them a 5 Star but every time we go there we fight for the eel cause they only put out 12 pieces every 30 mins or so but gone in less than a min of being put out. I have been there often when 2 people ahead of me take it all before I get my turn in line. A few times I left empty handed with no eel cause I only had an hour there. This is not acceptable. I would go more often if they kept the eel out so all visitors can enjoy it on their short lunch or dinner visit. Waiting for it is annoying and ruins the experience if eel is the main reason for going. Plus eel and sashimi should be avail during lunch. For the price we pay I would expect all you can eat eel. After all doesn't buffet mean all you can eat? read more

The quality of food and service have drastically decreased after they changed their name to sushi on (I guess the owner is different now). They used to have snowcrab and it was fresh and tasty. They still offer a variety of sushi, sashimi, a mix of Korean, Chinese and Japanese dishes and desserts. Overall, the food taste is mediocre, but it was much better when it was Todai. Their price is not cheap for dinner, especially on the weekends (pretty pricey actually), so I expected that the food quality should at least meet the price I paid. I was really excited about finally trying this place because I am a sushi FANATIC and was literally drooling at all the menu selections listed on the restaurant's webpage. However, after my meal there last night, I left less than satisfied with the feeling that it was much too overrated. The sushi rolls and sashimi were delicious, but not any better than I've had at my local go-to (Yuraku). There was a pretty big variety and they all tasted pretty fresh, though. There's a lot of other entrees to choose from, ranging from bulgogi to king crab legs...tempura to fried rice...udon noodles & soba noodles to ribs or grilled salmon. There is definitely something for everyone here. But again, none of the flavors were really phenomenal or exciting to me. This is to be expected from a buffet, of course, for it must cater to such a wide array of palates. The desserts were pretty unique and tasty. There's a chocolate fountain and the usual selection of fresh fruits. I personally loved the strawberry cheesecake and green tea cheesecake....and the adorable mini tiramisus (my FAVORITE dessert!). I was so full by the time I got to desserts, but somehow found room once I had my first bite of the sweets. I also highly recommend the three ice cream flavors -- green tea (really refreshing), red bean (classic), and strawberry (not too sweet or tart). For $30, I'm not sure how often and how willing I would be to come back. However, it was a fun experience and at least I left with a full stomach and a sushi craving very much satisfied. read more

We've been here quite a few times, actually it's been every single time a friend from out of town comes to visit. For the price about $30/person, it's good. The quality of the sushi is better than most buffet has to offer and I like the fact that there is a wide selection of everything (from sushi, to Chinese food, and even to American dishes). I do like their udon noodle soups and their crepes...I always eat their snow crabs and finish off my meal with their desserts. It has to be good for me to come back so many times correct, yes it is. Today I went to Todai for lunch. I agree with T N, I was obsessed with this place when it opened but the quality of the food has gone downhill now, although the price went uphill. Rice is very important in a sushi. The rice was kinda hard in texture and stale like and dry. Both the sushi and rolls had the bad rice. It was hard to chew and swallow, after a few pieces I only ate the raw fish and threw away the rice. Looks like they are using the low end (cheapest quality) rice now. Also the quality of the fish is unsatisfactory. Salmon looked dry and no taste that melts in your mouth. Fresh and good quality salmon should have that glazed wet shiny look and soft when you bite into it. The tuna and other fish selection was also the same-DRY! I was looking forward to some sushi but it was very disappointing. I noticed the rolls wasn't selling well, just sitting on the tray under glass waiting some people to eat them. Those poor guys making the sushi don't even have time to breath but today I saw them just standing around laughing and joking to themselves. They were probably saying : "Look at those idiots eating our crap we made." I was very very disappointed on their shrimp & vege tempura selection. For about an hour that I was there, I was only able to eat/grab 1 shrimp. They won't fry up more shrimp. For Sushi Lovers This is a buffet. They seat you at a table. A server will bring you drinks. The rest is up to you. They have some seafood: shellfish, some kind of baked fish, some crab dishes, etc. If you like seafood, then you'll probably go away happy. I can't eat shellfish, and I'm not a fan of sushi so outside of that the choices are limited. The teriyaki chicken was ok. The highlight has got to be the sushi. They have a huge variety of sushi with half a dozen cooks in the back working full time preparing more and more sushi. I mean the sushi section was huge. I'd never seen so much sushi in all my life, and I never want to see that much again. Like i said, I'm not a big fan. The cost is a little pricey for shopping mall buffet food. And the food is buffet quality. So unless you really really like sushi, this might not be the place for you. read more

To preface, I came here to eat sushi. I didn't even try most of the other dishes because in my opinion if you're going to drop $25 a person at a buffet, you shouldn't be eating fried noodles and chicken wings. I did try the lobster and it was small and tough and covered with a cheese like substance, plus it only comes out like once an hour and runs out right away, so it's not a factor. Let's get straight to the point: the sushi is terrible. Tuna - the faded color is a dead giveaway that this is far from fresh. Fresh tuna should be deep red. Harris Teeter seriously has fresher tuna (I used it to prepare poor man's sushi in college). Salmon - not as bad as the tuna but not great. I think it's easier to get away with less-than-fresh salmon because it's fattier and richer than tuna. Yellowtail - worst I've ever had. They must have used cuts from the back instead of the belly because it's super tough. Rolls - I'm going to lump these into one summary because they were bad across the board. Almost every roll had either fake crab stick or a fat lump of cream cheese as cheap filler. Unbelievable. Nigiri - mixed results. Nothing stood out as great but the mackerel and unagi weren't bad, perhaps because their flavor is inherently stronger which could mask lower quality. The roe (salmon I think? I always get them mixed up) was sickeningly sweet - unlike any other roe I've had. I've been to two all-you-can-eat sushi places on the west coast with comparable prices ($24 and $26 per person for dinner) which were infinitely better. At both places you order from a menu and they make it for you right then, and the fish is far fresher and there's no crab stick or cream cheese nonsense. If you just want to fill up on sushi and you don't care that much about the quality, save your money and go to some $13 Chinese buffet - there's at least one in Charlottesville whose sushi quality is comparable to that of Todai, and I'm sure they exist in northern VA too. read more

I first discovered Todai nearly a decade ago while on a trip to Las Vegas. I had been to sushi buffets before around Herndon, but nothing prepared me for Todai. It was awesome! So much sushi and so much variety! No "leaving rice on plate" penalties! Plus, udon noodles, tons of hot dishes, salads, and an amazing dessert buffet on it's own island! It was love at first sight. I told everyone I knew in DC about it, but no one could understand my joy. I continued to go to Todai in San Diego and in Portland while on vacation, but I longed for a Todai in DC. Then, I learned that the Fair Oaks Mall was opening a Todai. I was so happy. I called Fair Oaks management when they delayed opening to see what had happened. But finally, it came... Seriously though, I think Todai is great. I don't go as often as I used to, but it set the standard for sushi buffets in my book. It's great to go with sushi lovers and sushi novices. Hey, if they don't like raw fish, there are plenty of other options. The food might not be of the best quality, but, to me, it seems better than other sushi buffets and some other Japanese restaurants. With one of the largest sushi bars that I know of in the area, Todai is one of my favorite places to eat. I usually take sushi newbies there so they can get a sample of many things. Their large selection of rolls and salads offer lots of variety. They have snow crab legs but they are served cold. Then for dessert, a large selection of treats including a crepe station. The Good: It's a buffet. It's all the sushi and a few other Asian buffet items that you can eat! Some of the sushi is actually very good. The salmon roll was excellent; the fried dragon roll awesome! The selection and quality of some if the desserts (in nice small pieces so that you can easily try several) was better than I expected. The peel and eat shrimp were right on the money. The Bad: It's a buffet. You never, even for a second, forget that you are sitting in the middle of a huge food trough. It's a bit over crowded and you have to almost walk over other patrons (the converse is also true - other patrons walk over you) to get to the grub. Some of the fish wasn't the freshest that I have ever eaten. The crab legs were very watery and a bit bland. With the exception of small slices of rare beef sirloin and some small but tasty slices of braised Korean style short rib the non-seafood offerings were simply OK at best. I had close to 4 full plates of food and I finished them all! If you've been to any sushi buffet, you've been to them all. They all have a ton of pan-"Asian" food options along with an extensive dessert selection. This buffet has a very good variety of food, and has TONs of seafood options from crabs, squid, crab cakes, and shrimp to name a few. They also have a hibachi selection, as well as a good selection of sides from kimchi to different types of salads. By looking at the selections, I am willing to bet that the owners are Korean as there seem to be more Korean dish then there are Japanese dishes. Now when it comes to the sushi, I must say that they are quite delicious, however they are not out of this world delicious. I would give the sushi a rank of about 7/10, so not terrible by any means, but not the best either. I would give two thumbs up, however it is a bit pricy. read more

I love Todai! I am a sushi monster. For me there is never a bad time for da sushi. Always wanting it & then some. Todai was first found for me in California. Magic music played in my head when I first walked into this place. The selection is always fresh, soups are hot, & the service is great too. Selection is always amazing & they constantly make new rolls. They also have a hot food section (for the non fish lovers). Pork, steak/chicken, dumplings, fried rice, tempura veggies, samosas. Amazing sushi, sashimi, tempura etc. I was stuffed from all of that but still managed to eat a freshly made crepe with nutella and bananas. I went at dinner time on a weekday and there were many open tables, the sushi was replenished quickly and our water glasses never went dry. Its slightly expensive at $26/pp for dinner but lunch could be a good value. All the food was very high quality and fresh. Oh and they have frozen yogurt and an espresso machine! read more

Todai Todai Todai.... I've been to this place a grand total of 3 times in the past 3 years. I'll get right to the point- Expensive, lots of food choices (lots of sushi and lots of hot dishes and lots of dessert!), and mediocre service. First of all, park in Macy II. All my past trips to Todai, I always forget where it's located, and so I end up having to walk the entire mall just to get to the restaurant. There are TONS of variety, as far as food is concerned. You have your boring Maki rolls, fresh sashimi rolls, and then you have very interesting cooked sushi (IE- thin slice of pineapple wrapped around the sushi, fried sushi balls, excellent volcano rolls). Then they have about 4 different salads (Yes, seaweed salad is one of them), and then you venture into the soup section and finally at the end you have steamy, hot, yummy dishes. There was so much variety here that after I tried everything, I was so full that I couldn't go back for seconds. The dessert was perfectly sized. The cakes are small, one-bite treats that won't make you feel fat after eating it. Service... ehhh. They clear out trays and are there when you need them. Service isn't really a big deal in a buffet since they have so many tables to attend. I liked our waiter since he doesn't give you the check until you ask for it. I don't know about you, but I don't like it when waiters give you the check in the middle of your meal, as if to rush you. The one thing that prevents me from coming here as often as I would like is the price. It's expensive! I can understand the price because of the quality and variety of food, but it's still a bit too expensive for my liking. But i was just very disappointed at the quality of the sushi, and the other food they offer. I really wish that this place was better! A colleague of mine and I dined here about two or three weeks ago. Interestingly they had actually just changed the name of the restaurant, and when we asked about it the reason was because the association with the former name limited in their ability to expand the menu to include a lot of the hibachi items that are now on the menu. Anyway, the main reason that we went there was for the all you can eat sushi. I was a little surprised at the cost that was charged for this, being from the Northeast most of the all-you-can-eat sushi places up here tend to be in the $20-$30 range, so the approximately $40 per person charge was a bit of a sticker shock. The sushi was pretty good, not the best sushi I have ever had, not even the best sushi I've ever had at an all-you-can-eat sushi place. But the inclusion of additional items to their menu, as well as the crepes for dessert, made up for this. read more
