The last two times my family went to Sushi On, we all got sick. Like "running to the bathroom" sick. Not only that, but the food was also too salty or too sweet, and we know how it usually tastes since we've been coming here for years, starting from the Todai days. I love this place, and don't at the same time. With all you can eat sushi, you have to understand that the quality will not be impeccable. However, with that being said... it is ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHIIIII. They also have a buffet with korean, chinese, and japanese hot dishes. So come hungry and prepare to stuff your face. Eat everything with the understanding that they are going for quantity, not quality. So no, your sushi rolls and crab legs are NOT made with love. The crab legs are hit or miss, and often overcooked. Thus creating the battle of trying to remove the meat. It may or may not be worth your time. I like this place for the novelty of it. Nothing blows you away, but yet, its all soo good. Took my Nephew who is 14 that loves sushi. He thought it was sushi heaven. Price is very decent. Its $25 per adults. Different set price under 5. It's a good place to enjoy different type of sushi. I've been here for lunch and dinner, and I think it's worth the value. They have so many options for sushi, soups, salads, meats, and desserts. I didn't realize they have pho and ramen type soups available as well as crepes. The crab legs and shrimp are definitely a nice plus. The servers come by often for drink refills and the food seems to be replenished often. My favorite part is probably all the small cut desserts, coffee bar, and soft serve ice cream. read more

Went with my three kids to see how the sushi buffet ranks and give them a chance to try a variety of Asian dishes. Overall, it was ok. The food was a bit meh. But the kids found a few things they liked. Found many more they didn't but that's really their issue not Sushi On. I have seen many rave reviews of the sushi buffet so I was looking forward to that. and I suppose it gets raves because its all you can eat. But personally i crave quality and wide variety of sushi. Which wasn't there. So for giving us wide variety of choices overall, three stars. For the sushi not so much. But again good place to introduce kids a a lot of choices. read more

I really like this place! It has a good selection of Asian food. The sushis are average quality, but you can eat as much as you want! I like the grilled meat session, but it could be hard to get the Korean grilled beef sometimes. They don't grill beef as fast as people want it. You often see see people stand in line for over 10 minutes to get it. I'm not patient enough to stand in line, so sometimes I cannot get it. I feel they should try to solve this problem by having more people cooking there. In general, I like the experience here. read more

Honestly, especially for the price, this is one of the best Asian buffets in the northern virginia area. For $32 ($22 for lunch), you get all-you-can-eat sushi, sashimi salad, crab legs, some Asian hot food classics, desserts, and more. The sushi won't be from your top-notch culinary sushi experiences but their sushi is solid for when you're just craving sushi and you want to enjoy the taste. They offer a wide variety of sushi and desserts (including match ice cream, flan, and crepes!). However, if you don't like sushi, I wouldn't recommend coming, as their hot bar, though not bad, is not as big as their sushi. This place tends to get crowded on the weekends, but I think that's the better time to go--when it gets crowded, they'll keep putting out rolls, keeping your meal fresh. Worth the wait! read more

I love coming here for lunch on the weekdays. The wait isn't too long and the servers here are nice and friendly. I usually only eat sushi whenever I come here and the sushi is always good. On their busy days, it usually takes a while for them to put out new plates of sushi and the sashimi salad, but there are also other options like the Korean food. Terrible.. if I could, I want to give zero star. I feel sick after eating here. I can't believe how this restaurant is still doing business with this poor quality control. The atmosphere and the service quality of servers were great. They were attentive. But the restroom was dirty and looked like no one took care of it for a while. Running water, out of order signs, and wet paper towels on the floor. Hygiene in the food section was bad as well. Sushi rice was very dry. And the raw fish pieces were here and there on the buffet bar. I was standing in front of the half-shell oyster corner and the staff literally threw oysters one by one on the ice. No one cared how the food was seen. I went there to celebrate good news for my family but we ended up arguing why we came here. Horrible! read more

First off, I was not fully prepared for just how enormous Todai is. The place is huge, with buffet bars that stretch from one end to the other, with pretty much every type of food imaginable -- sushi, shabu shabu, hot bar, dessert station, etc, etc. So yeah, when it comes to quantity, Todai has it. Unfortunately, this really is a case of quantity over quality, as I found the general quality of the food, while not BAD, not particularly impressive. And I'm pretty sure I tried, um, everything. First up, the sushi. They really have an impressive selection of different kinds of rolls, nigiri, and some sashimi. They're all small, but whatever, you can take as much as you want so who cares how big the individual bites are. It isn't the highest quality sushi ever, but it's really not bad. So if you ever find yourself in a serious sushi fix, you can always come here and stuff yourself to the brim. Literally. AYCE, man! Unfortunately, the rest of the food was pretty lackluster. I was most excited for crab legs, which I had plenty of, but aside from that everything else was pretty meh. They bring out stuffed lobster tails on the hour, and I managed to snag one (well, one half, since they serve them that way). It's clearly a super popular item, since people were lined up for them! Sadly, I don't understand why. I thought it was kind of gross. The lobster itself was overcooked to the point of being rubbery and the cream cheese stuffing, er, stuff, was... blech. Icky. I'll stick to the regular crab legs. I tried a bunch of stuff from the hot bar, as well as a bowl from the shabu shabu station, which was one of the most disappointing parts. NO flavor at all! It was like the meat was just quickly boiled in water. Credit where credit's due, the real highlight of the buffet for me was the dessert station. Tiny little bite-sized morsels of lots of different desserts, PLUS a mini-crepe station (and a bing soo station, though I didn't try that). The crepe was actually pretty great, and I loooooved the flan. I love flan in general, of course, but mostly I was just happy that they had it. Also, green tea ice cream FTW. Sadly, the dessert bar loveliness was canceled out the minute I got the check. This place is definitely pricey, especially when you consider the fact that it's an Asian buffet. I know that they have a ton of food, but honestly, $70+ with tip for two people to dine at a buffet... on a weeknight...? Yikes. Drinks aren't included in the buffet cost, which I guess shouldn't surprise me, but yeah, the pricetag just seemed kind of excessive. I think when I'm in the mood for gorging myself at an Asian buffet, I'll stick to Hokkaido in Bailey's Crossroads, which has less variety, but is MUCH cheaper and just about the same quality. read more

Let's put it in perspective... Last night, I spent $50+ for one person at Chasin' Tails in Arlington for a couple of pounds of crawfish, a dozen oysters on the half shell, and some beignets. Today, I spent $30 for one person at Todai for a couple of pounds of crawfish that were actually larger (less work for more food), a dozen oysters on the half shell that were much larger and just as fresh, and probably 25 pounds of sashimi. Ok. I'm exaggerating a little on the 25 pounds (but not much), but you get the idea. Yes, I had to get my ass out of my chair to harvest my own food from the various troughs, but it helped offset the 10,000 calories I consumed. It's amazing to see some reviewers bitch and whine about Todai's price, but what are they comparing the $30 for dinner to? A $2.99 McDonald's Happy Meal? If you compare the $30 to a dinner at a sushi restaurant, Chasin' Tails, or anything remotely comparable, it's an incredible bargain. However, if you don't eat seafood, don't like sushi, or think that curly fries is exotic, then don't bother. $30 is too expensive for this place - for you at least. Go to a Waffle House and go all out. read more

Extremely rude and non-negotiable. First of all, I've been going to Todai and alway liked it, but I have serious issue this time against them and I swear I'll never eat here again. I came on a Sunday with my wife and in-laws to celebrate my birthday lunch (my birthday is on a Tuesday). Todai always gives me a free meal coupon for my NEXT visit if I were to eat on my b'day. So upon walking in, I mentioned it'll be my birthday and would like a coupon at my next visit while I have lunch there. The two hostess working there gave me a dirty look and talked like a 15 year old snob, "um duh, we only give out coupon if you come the day of your birthday, come back next time." That attitude really upset me. I held my frustration and asked for the manager. The manager came and said it was their policy and they had to be fair, which incompletely understand. Then I took a nice negotiating approach and said, "we only came to eat here bc of the coupon, I mean by the number game, you'd lose 4 customers just today alone not to mention how many people I'll come with next week. For what? One coupon?" Then, the manager gave me a look and said with an attitude "too bad that's just our policy". I didn't want to put up with it so I left. In the past year this place has been the dumps. The Managers act like they are those young Kpop stars. The waiters act like Groupies to their Managers.. I was asked why I wanted more soda even though I knew they would charge me for it. I said because I wanted one (no customer should ever have to tell a server/waiter why). Not like I asked rudely, even though they have been very rude to me the whole night. Some of the male waiters there need to be concerned more with their guests, not their phones or hair gel. In no way does this restaurant honor your respective culinary traditions. I don't care if it's a buffet. They should pay you and me to eat here. The sushi is rubber on warm rice. In writing that, I had to stop myself from saying flavored rubber because "flavor" would be inaccurate. Everything else on the menu is served north or south of lukewarm. Been to Todai in San Diego and Hawaii. Obvious Hawaii was the best! Out of the three this Todai is the smallest, and was just okay. I am starting to hate how I notice that Koreans treat Koreans a little better in most establishments. (Honey Pig) That is why I have my favorite Korean joints. The ones that treat everyone the same, because they care about all customers. This place, for being a national chain is as shame. Otherwise, the food was okay, but the table server, not once refilled my water in 1.5 hours there. Yet he was serving the Korean family left and right. SO because of him I'm never going back. Like he kept going taking their crab legs and brought them backed steamed. We didn't know you could do that. Oh I forgot we get sub par treatment because we are not Korean. A palace of gluttony cleverly disguised as a somewhat refined and upscale buffet. I come here on weekend nights( ~$28 ) to strategically gorge on snow crab legs and oysters...until I feel like I've got my money back. Then, and only then do I move on to the rest of the selection. I've always imagined myself alone in such a utilitarian approach to buffeting, but the last time I went I noticed a couple of elderly asians at the table next to me USING THE EXACT SAME STRATEGY. Some helpful hints for fellow pigs: 1. Lobster is served on the weekends...BUT IT'S A TRICK! The tail is mostly filled with cream cheese - something that is cheap and will quickly fill you up. 2. Sometimes the snow crab legs are very salty...in this case ask the waiter for an extra water so you can dip away the salt. Salt = water retention = less room in tummy 3. A couple of waiters here stop refilling your water after about 2.5 hours, presumably to "persuade" you to finish. Such situations give me the opportunity to both save money and rid my wallet of those pesky pennies! 4. If you just want sushi, come for lunch when the price is ~16-18 In summary, I love this place because the ROI is simply astronomical here. read more

Crab legs are barely edible as it has so much salt. Sushi is mostly rice. 2) Their system of measuring kids by height to determine cost doesn't make sense.... This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, the place my wife & I always went when we wanted to splurge a little (several times a year). But in the past year we have seen it going steadily downhill (at the same time the prices have been sharply increasing!). Last Friday night (8/31/2012) we took a couple of friends who hadn't been there before, hoping to impress them with this "great" place. But, we were embarrassed to find that it is now pretty awful. The wide variety of interesting salads had always been our favorite part (even more than the sushi), but this time we found them uninspired and limp, looking like they'd been sitting out for days--completely inedible. The hot dishes were barely tolerable. The nigirizushi were dry and uninteresting and a lot of the various maki were just plain weird and unpleasant. For the first time ever, we left Todai still feeling hungry--the food was that bad. That's a fatal combination with the $30/person price tag, and we won't be going back. It was also weirdly deserted for a Friday evening, so I guess others have been a little quicker than we were to find the problems. read more

I launched a kamikazi attack on Todai one Saturday afternoon recently, descending on the buffet tables about 1/2 hour before they wrapped up for lunch. Really wish I'd only done a fly-by and saved my money. Best thing about Todai was the service, and that's ironic given its a buffet place. There was still plenty of food available despite the time and the fact they'd stopped restocking items. The person taking care of the section of tables I was seated in as very attentive, keeping my water glass full and letting me know when there was only about 10 more minutes left so that I could go get more food if desired. I did sample some of the hot food items and the soups, but mostly I concentrated on the sushi. Hey, all you can eat sushi? I'm so there. For buffet sushi it was actually quite good. A long way from made-to-order, but there was a nice selection of sashimi, nigiri and maki. There were also several more unusual sushi items available that you wouldn't normally see on a fixed price buffet. I was brave and tried a few things (thankfully there were signs above them so it wasn't completely a blind taste test) but mostly I stuck to the familiar. I'm never overly adventurous on my first visit to a place when eating raw fish, but as I'm still alive to review all was apparently good. I did think the price was a bit steep and for the cost/quality, I'd probably choose Hokkaido over returning to Todai since the food was better and its about $10 less. read more

Bent over, holding my stomach in pain. Making sounds of distress as i stumble to the car. I bet you're thinking I'm sick after eating at this place. Nope, just so darn stuffed to the point that i am asking myself, "Why did you have to try everything on the buffet line. TWICE!!!" Sushi is the key here. You've got a hankering, they've got a solution. Over 30 different variety of sushi fixes. Taste them all if you can. The cuddle fish is amazingly good. The roles are half sized from the normal, but plentiful enough to satisfy any sushi pro. Service was awesome. These guys are like hidden ninjas. You leave your seat for another plate and return....drinks refilled, plates vanished, napkins replenished. Well worth the money. read more

We've been coming here since the new owners took over. At first, I thought it was really great. The food was excellent and it was one of the better Korean-run sushi-buffet's in the Fairfax area. Over time, however, things seem to have gone downhill. First, the quality of food has seemingly declined over time. The hot bar food sits out and ends up getting cold, especially the teppanyaki area with chicken, beef, and shrimp. We've come several times and been very disappointed with the snow crab legs being either overly salted, or just plain rotten (e.g., the animal died a while before it got cooked). It's also important to note that the buffet always serves the same items. It would be nice if they introduced some variety once in a while, especially at their price point, which has also increased as quality decreased. In short, my wife and I think they got complacent and comfortable so they're no longer "trying" which sucks. We used to like this place a lot, and it's still an "ok" buffet, but NOT for the $40 per person they're charging. If they lowered their price to $25 or so, then I'd probably give it 3.5 stars. read more

If you're looking for a huge, overwhelming Japanese-themed buffet, complete with the anime cartoonish decor, this is your place. If you are willing to drive 30ish miles from DC/Arlington to get it, head towards Fair Oaks. If you are looking for a wide selection of hand rolls, sushi/sashimi/nigiri and a variety of different asian dishes, Todai fits the bill. If you are happy with mass quantities of below-gourmet-but-a-notch-above-mediocre food in mass quantities, you'll be satisfied (that goes for both the sushi, and the hot bar). If you are truly a sushi lover, or have a more discerning palate when it comes to Japanese food, stick to wherever it is you usually go, because you will probably leave Todai complaining. I struggled a bit with how many stars to give this one. On any given day I could fall into either of the two categories above; sometimes I'm in the mood and sometimes I'm not. Usually when I am craving sushi, I'm looking for the experience of a quality relaxing meal rather than an excuse to stuff myself. This is the latter. It's really more about eating a lot, and trying a ton of different things. Just know what you're in for. At a little under $30, you'll get your money's worth if you stick mostly to sushi. Stay away from the dim sum dishes; they are pretty poor attempts. read more

In 1997 I lived in Los Angeles with my old man. I was 14 at the time and I was just getting into Sushi. A few months before we moved to Boston, a massive sushi buffet opened up underneath the Beverly Center, a large mall in LA near beverly hills. This place was called Todai, and I fell in love with it. The concept of "all you can eat" sushi was pretty much the coolest thing ever. We went a bunch, but then moved back east and I never saw Todai again. Until 10 years later when I was living in Reston, VA and went to Fair Oaks mall...... As if the heavens opened up, a beam of light shone down on me and reminded me of my childhood - i absolutely HAD to go!!!! My father visited me in VA and he and I went, for old times sake. Unfortunately, it wasn't as great as i remembered it. yes they have TONS of sushi, TONS of variety, and a bunch of other good stuff, but none of it was of particularly fresh quality or beautifully presented. This was disappointing to me. While living in Reston, I discovered the sushi-buffet gems of Matsuri and Obi Sushi, and so unfortunately Todai, which is priced at $27.00 for buffet dinner, paled in comparison. I would not recommend this over those other smaller sushi-buffet joints, but I would recommend going just to see it because it really is quite an experience - HUGE selection. If your mission, if you so chose to accept it, is to stuff your ass full of fish and other buffet gastronmica, then Todai is a good bet. Buffet pros will quickly be able to assess the situation and do the food/filler equation in their head and dig in -- snow crab legs, shrimp cocktail, sashimi platter and lobster is a hit. Fried rice, soup, noodles and those suspect maki rolls bulging with rice -- skip. However, make a concession and save room for the fresh made dessert crepes. They're surprisingly good. And if the line is to long or if you're not in the mood for sushi buffet, hit Hunan Chinese Gourmet down the hall. Some of the better suburban Chinese you'll find -- try the noodle bowls. read more

THERE ARE COCKROACHES CRAWLING ON THE SUSHI. I saw a little guy using the sushi pieces like a maze. (read: corn maize for cockroaches). They took the plate away and discussed it amongst themselves. I wish I had something original to post for this review... but just like everyone else, here are my thoughts. -Seriously overpriced. It's essentially a Chinese buffet with sushi. Save your money and go eat $30.00 of good sushi, or a $12.99 buffet with sushi on it. It's the same thing. -Food quality is blah. Overly salty dishes and totally bland dried out sushi. -If you're in it for the lobster and crab... cool. But be prepared to stand in line like cattle and wait for them to ring the dinner bell on the hour. -Servers are like little Justin Beiber hair gel clones. I feel like they are about to bust out and start singing Gangnam style. (Yes, I know that's Korean, but you get the point.) -The place has always been clean; they do take care in keeping the buffet tidy. I'm not going to totally hate on this place, if I am in the mall, and people want to eat there, I am going to go... but it is NOT on the top of my list of places to dine.
